and from the east coast to the west americans are waking up on this sunday september 11th a day the country remembers thousands of lives lost ten years ago. good morning, everyone. welcome to mornings on 2 i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. events memorializing the victims of 9/11 are being held across the country. including in san francisco where a remembrance ceremony is getting under way to remember firefighters. >> reporter: the ceremony just got under way here. we are outside of fire station 13 right on ocean avenue. they have just unfolded a flag here. you can see members of the san francisco fire department taking part in this ceremony. they want to time this out very carefully so at 6:59 they sounded three chimes to signal the exact time that the south tower of the world trade center collapsed. and in just a few moment trace be ringing the last alarm and then they will be lowering the flags here to half staff. this is a ceremony taking place here. the chief or the fire department taking part as well. you can see members of the fire department standing out in front of the station to commemorate their comrades who lost their lives on 9/11 ten years ago today. and in just a few moments they will be reading off all of the names 343 names of the new york firefighters who died on 9/11. >> on this ten year anniversary we remember and honor all those fire service emergency medical service law enforcement. [ inaudible ] nor we remember the lives victor perez. firefighter. we will all carry on together and keep you both in our hearts. please give a moment of silence. we will now read the names of the nypd firefighters that gave their lives. >> now they will begin the reading of the names passing around the list here one by one. >> adam david ram. [ inaudible ] >> reporter: members of the as far as fire department here reading off the names more than 300 new york city firefighters their comrades who were killed on 9/11 ten years ago today. they will be reading off all of those names out in front of the san francisco fire station. station 15 and similar ceremonies taking part at every single fire station across california this morning. >> in from san francisco we want to take you back live to new york city. 90 minutes ago a ceremony got under way at the world trade center. president obama and former president george bush were in attendance. as part of this ceremony victims names are also being named and a moment of silence was held. a moment of silence was also held when the plane crashed into the pentagon and a fourth moment of silence is expected to take place or it just may have to remember a time that the plane crashed in pennsylvania flight 93 united airline flight bound for san francisco. that flight crashed at 10:03 eastern time. 7:03 on the west coast. right now we want to take you live back out to new york city and listen in here at the podium. >> the bright eyed daughter the quick son. alphabet of names in a green field. names in the small tracks of birds. names lifted from a hat or balanced on the tip of the tongue. names willed in a dim warehouse of memory. so many names there is barely room on the walls of the heart. >> william m.. >> and the names being read by family members of the victims. this has been taking place for the past 90 minutes. reporter carter e advance has been in new york city all morning long. let's join carter now. >> reporter: you know you just saw former new york governor speaking there and now the names are resuming. we did in fact have that fourth moment of silence at 10:03:00 a.m.. that is when flight 93 hit the ground in shanksville, pennsylvania. let me step out of the way. i want to give you the scope of all of this. we almost start out with the reflecting pools the memorials here. this is a unique perspective. those water falls the largest man-made water falls in north america. you see all those people surrounding it. these are family members of people who died here ten years ago today. and they are being allowed for the first time ever to walk up to the reflecting pools and see the names of their loved ones etched in bronze all along the rim of each of these reflecting pools. you might see people leaning over. it looks like they are writing on a piece of people. many people are rubbing chalk or crayons on their names there so they can have something else to remember their loved ones by. i can show you more if you would like. let's show you world trade number one. this is the tower that is being built until place of the original two that was here. a lot of legal wranglings for many years. but now construction is well under way. they are moving along at is a pretty good clip. when i first moved here to new york five years ago, this was still just a giant hole in the ground. people would still come here from all over the world and try to get a peek at the construction inside. there was really nothing to see per se. it was just a giant hole. it was a feeling you get when you are down in this area. i think everyone remembers where they were on september 11th, 2001. you get that feeling down here. finally today we really have something of substance to look at. we have those memorials. and starting tomorrow the general public will be able to view those memorials. >> carter evanss reporting from new york city. thank you. from new york city we want to take you to the pentagon. president obama will visit all three 9/11 sites today. you are looking at j. as he speak -- you look at joe biden as he speaks in arlington where one of the planes also crashed and lives were lost there. emotional ceremonies going on across the countries. today's event will include president obama laying a wreath at the pentagon memorial. we know we want to listen in right now to vice president joe biden. >> he sat on a bench and con fronted a man. a man that was wondering aloud. why am i still alive? for hood i not been at the dentist, i would have been in the office. my office. totally destroyed. my colleagues gone. why me? it's a basic american instinct to respond to crisis when help is needed. to confront the afflicted. an american instinct summoned by the collective strength of the american people that we see come to the floor in our darkest hours. an instinct that echoes through the ages from pearl harbor to bay route. flight 93 to right here in the pentagon. those in this building that day knew what they were witnessing. it was a declaration of war by stateless actors bent on changing our way of life. who leaved that -- whole believed that -- who believed these horrible acts of terror directed against innocents could buckle our knees, could bend our will, could begin to break us and break our resolved. but they did not know us. instead, that same american instinct that sent all of you under the breach between the fourth and fifth corridors galvanized an entire new patriots. the 9/11 generation. many of them were just kids on that bright september morning. but like their grandparents, on december 7th, 1941, they courageously bored the burden that the united states placed on their soldiers. >> they we now want to take you to shanksville, pennsylvania. services are scheduled for another hour and a half in that community at the new flight 93 national memorial. now normally that community has a population of 260 but so many people have come out there. there are tens of thousands of people now in that community. former presidents bill clinton and george w. bush were at the nation's newest national park earlier ceremony there. we know they have been trying to build the memorial there. it will be a set of 40 marble slabs. each subscribed with the names of the passenger and screw. they are still raising money for that. they are remembering the heroic efforts on that plane that crushed the cockpits to stop that terrorism attack and saved countless lives that morning when they took matters into their own hands and refused to let the terrorists fly that plane. certainly this morning we are remembering the heros of flight 93. >> u.s. intelligence officials say there is no evidence this morning that any al qaeda operative has entered the country to carry out an anniversary attack. new york city stepped up police patrols after reports of a terror threat. officers this weekend are conducting more security sweeps around ground zero. investigators have been look into the theft of two vans from a world trade -- world trade center contractor. government officials say they are questioning the validity of the tip that three would detonate a car bomb. good morning, to you. here at home the possibility of thunderstorms in our forecast. once again giving you a live look. san jose this morning. the low cloud deck marine layer thicker than what we saw yesterday. many of us looking up with partly to mostly cloudy skies. we will see the burn off later on today. the president joe biden has just wrapped up an emotional speech to the family members and friends of the 184 people who died when an american airlines plane crashed into the pentagon on this day a decade ago. also here this morning are the first responders who saved scores of lives. a giant flag hangs near the spot where the plane hit the building. just as it did in the days after september 11th. members of the armed services put flowers on the benches in the memorial honoring the victims. and defense secretary leon panetta lead a moment of silence saying while terrorists tried to make the united states weaker, the country is stronger. >> to this day and by these memorials to each victim we pledge to never forget the enemy that made this happen. >> reporter: now we are back to a live look at the pentagon. president obama will lay a wreath at the memorial there tonight and speak at a concert. a concert for hope at the kennedy center. now of course there has been some anxiety here in the nation's capitol at the possibility of another attack. washington, d.c. police say reports of suspicious vehicles are up and we have seen capitol police conducting searches here in the senate park behind us. so far it does not appear anything has turned up related to a terrorist threat. reporting live from washington, d.c. alison burns ktvu channel 2 news. time now 7:21. at least 80 american soldiers are wounded and two afghan civilians are dead after a womaning. that attack happened yesterday on the eve of the tenth anniversary of 9/11. it was carried out by a suicide bomber that detonated a large bomb inside a truck carrying firewood. the taliban has claimed responsibility for that attack. war protestors plan what they call a different commemoration of 9/11. hundreds of activists will gather on both ends of the bridge at noontime. they will stand in solidarity for world peace. members have carried out similar peace marchs on the bridge in the past. operation enduring freedom tried to dismantle the al qaeda terrorist network. they have given safeman to al qaeda and refused to hand over osama bin laden after the attacks. the taliban were ousted from power lateener of a son and last conversation ten years ago. a bay area mother is among the people in shanksville pennsylvania that are reremembering the passengers of flight 93. and she talked to us about his last call to her before he and other passengers rushed the terrorists saving countless lives. alice stands in shanksville, pennsylvania in memory of her son. she knows he died fighting because heckled her just before charging down the aisle for that final battle with the terrorist. >> mom, this is mark. i just want to tell you i love you. i'm a flight from newark to san francisco and there is three guys on board there are actually four who have taken over the plane and say they have a bomb. >> he was the light of her life. & yet she is inspired by the heros that fought with him and the lives they saved. >> it was really a scene and it was really horrifying and yet it was wonderful to know that a little group of guys can make such a great big difference on that day. >> he was a former flight attendant and admits she is still scared to fly. she flew to pennsylvania today in honor of her son who didn't let his fear stop him from fighting. >> i live 9/11 every day of my life and i always will and i will go to my death trying to rectify the unsolved and unfinished business of 9/11. >> she also says she is proud her son was able to come out to her and she is actively involved in alex savage. >> reporter: good morning, claudine. san francisco firefighter this morning honored their own during this commemoration ceremony during the september 11th attacks. it took place behind us here right outside fire station 15 on ocean avenue. everything got started just before 7:00 this morning. we'll show you video of what was taking place. in fact, things got started precisely at 6:59:00 a.m.. that is the time that the south tower of the world trade center collapsed ten years ago today. the firefighters stood outside the station. three chimes were set off. moments later they rang what they call the last alarm for their comrades. the new york fight firers killed in the september 11th attacks and they read off all 343 names of the new york city firefighters that died on 9/11. the chief of the fire department joann hayes white took part in this ceremony. after the ceremony got finished we asked her about what was going through her head. >> three months ago in a house fire we lost to firefighters. that loss has been very difficult and so i can only imagine a department losing 343. >> reporter: so a very somber ceremony for members of the san francisco fire department and similar ceremonies that took place here at station 15. took place at the exact same time this morning at all 43 fire stations across san francisco. we are live in san francisco this morning. county v channel 2 news. >> the mayor of oakland marked the anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks this morning. add the site of the new remember them sculpture. with candles and flags in hands the group observed a moment of silence for the 9/11 victims. mayor gene quan says having it in front of a skullture has great importance. >> ity we are very, very proud the statues are in place in time for the tenth commemoration for what happened in new york. because that was the day i think when we came together as a nation despite our differences. >> the sculpture is made up of 25 monumental figures in history. the pope is delivering a message of peace as rereflects on the september 11th attacks. during a speech in italy he called on world leaders and others to resist the temptation toward hatred. he is praying for the victims of 9/11 and says no violence should be committed in the name of god. here in the bay area security is going to be heightened today at popular tourist spots. the highway patrol will have an increased presence through tomorrow. officials also say security has been tighter on the span ever since 9/11. there are cameras above and below the bridge and more officers have been hired to patrol the bridge and the surrounding areas. mass transit will also receive extra attention. bart has extra security at train stations and parking lots through tomorrow as well. although there is no, ma'am specific threat the transportation security administration has asked for increased patrols around bart. a national security operation including more than 140 agencies from 32 states and several canadian cities. law enforcement will also be out in full force at the 49ers game. they will assist with security at the regular season home opener. they won't reveal its role but san francisco police. you can watch the seattle sea hawks game at 1:00 p.m.. a san francisco landmark will pay host to a 9/11 memorial climb. participates will run or walk up the billing. they will go up 48 floors twice this is not a competition. organizers say everyone involved is a winner. each climber will wear the name and photo of the 343 firefighters killed when the world trade center collapsed. participants will be going at their own pace. the event includes bag pipers and opening ceremony and even a barbecue lunch right after. there will be several other events happening across the bay area to mark the anniversary of 9/11. at 9:00 this morning there will be a 9/11 attribute at the veterans war memorial in san francisco followed by a community service cleanup event. and in san leandro police and firefighters will sound their sirens and fly their flags at half staff at 10:00. at 3:00 the tenth anniversary benefit performance by san francisco and east bay community choirs will get under way in berkeley. and just a reminder for you, we will have coverage throughout the day on the 9/11 attacks both on ktvu and ktvu.com. we'll have a 5:30 in fact and then at 6:00 we will air a special report titled 9/11 a decade of change. happening now bay area firefighters are headed to the south land to battle the wild fire in current county. marin county is sending a strike team this morning. it consists of five counties. lightning strikes have sparked more than 50 wild fires throughout kern county. 15,000-acres have been burned. that is more than 24 square miles. as of last night there is zero percent containment and residence have been advised to evacuate. it took frank firefighters more than 40 minutes to contain a blaze in a building. firefighters say it was a stubborn smoky fire but everyone inside the ground floor business and two upper floor apartments escaped unharmed. there is no word yet on what started the fire. good wednesday. we'll have your day planner for your sunday coming up. cal train is back on schedule after a man was struck and killed by a train in san francisco. it happened yesterday around 5:30 in the evening on the track on gerald avenue. it was carrying 265 passengers. none of them were injured. it's not clear if it was an accident or suicide. according to cal train this is the 13th death on the cal train tracks this year. the guardian angels are on patrol in san francisco's mission district after a spike in violence. there have been at least three killings over the last two weeks. the guardian angels have spent the last two nights in the city's mission district in response to the violence. the group notifies police before it goes out. they say there were nonmajor problems so far this weekend. but there have been a few minor flair ups. >> he pushed me. he's not supposed to touch me. i couldn't let that guy get up close to me. we know our procedures and follow them best o our ability. it's just that corner. >> the guardian angels say they are not armed but all are trained in self-defense and know how to make citizens arrests. 7:41. since nerve flying has been a whole new names of the victims from the 9/11 attacks. many of the children as you can see not even old enough probably to remember the attacks but lost either a mother or a father or some relative ten years ago after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. ten years ago bags on domestic flights were rarely screened. now all of them are. another big change is the presence of homeland security. there is also more efficient screening of passengers and baggage partly because of better training and ct scanners. spokesman at san francisco international airport says even with all the changes there is never enough security. >> the bar has to constantly move. raised up. people trying to reach these systems are not giving up. they will try to keep reaching. we have to try to stay one step ahead. >> there will be increased security across the airports today because of the 9/11 anniversary. authorities in los angeles last night arrested a man for making terrorist threats and possessing a hoax device. investigators say 62-year-old peradez carried a suspicious package upon a bus. the bomb unit later determined there was no explosives on board. some tense moments aboard a southwest flight last night. the plane bound from baltimore was diverted from nashville. a flight attendant says a passenger exhibited suspicious behavior which included going to a restroom several times in a matter of minutes. law enforcement questioned the passenger but did not charge him with anything. they did find a mysterious plastic item in the restroom which was not an explosive. in sweden police have arrested four people on suspicion on preparing a terrorist attack. authorities evacuated an art center sweden's second largest city. they deem the threat a serious danger to life, health, and property. investigators won't say if the terror plot was linked to the 9/11 anniversary. oakland homicide detectives are investigating a fire that killed two people overnight. it happened on the second floor of a building around 1:30 this morning. there is an acupuncture business on the ground level of that building but the fire was in the residential unit above. witnesses told firefighters they saw two people fleeing the scene this morning with gas canisters. >> two individuals were found inside the residence. right now we are investigating it. we called out our homicide units. >> one of the bodies was badly burned and the coroner is still trying to identify the victims. the other victim is believed to be a woman. six people were displaced by the fire. san francisco police are investigating a robbery and shooting that injured two people. it happened near brooke dale avenue around 8:00 last night. a 22-year-old man was at the basketball courts when two men walked up to him and robbed him. the victim was shot several times as he tried to run away and his injuries are life threatening. investigators say a woman who was standing in her front yard was hit by a stray bullet. she is expected to survive. it is a power walk like no other. how people are using a bay area landmark to honor 9/11 victims this morning. mostly cloudy mild start outside our door this morning with a possibility of [ whoosh! ] i'd love some. one taste, and you'll understand. delicious dunkin' donuts coffee. pick some up where you buy groceries. america runs on dunkin'. you are taking a live look at ground zero and the family members that have been come together podium all morning long now to read the victims of the september 11th attacks. president obama and his wife are there as well as former president george bush and his wife. they have been watching along the side. standing behind bullet proof glass as they watch the ceremonies take place there. very, very emotional morning. the mayor of new york actually opened the ceremony saying although we can never unsee what happened here, we can also see that the children who lost their parents have grown into young adults and good works have taken enroute. a massive flag is flying on ground zero. workers hung the flag ons south side of the building to mark the tenth anniversary of the september 11th attacks. the flag will eventually be moved to one of the highest points on the tower. the 60 by 90-foot flag usually flies at new york's george washington bridge on major holidays. the memorial wall provided a postcard backdrop last night. all it will up there in shanksville, pennsylvania. organizers placed 2,982 ill luminaries on those. the number for each life lost in the attacks. they consisted of candles in white paper bags at the base of each marble slabs. one of the larger memorial services in the bay area today is going to be held in union city. the ceremony will include a flag procession and a 21 gun salute. union city constructed a memorial. every monument is inscribed with a victims name, age, and hometown. that ceremony starts at 1:00 this afternoon at sugar mill landing in union city. a 9/11 attribute is taking place right now at one of the most recognizable structures in san francisco. participants will go up 48 floors twice. each climber will wear the name and photo of the 343 firefighters killed when the world trade center collapsed. joining us live to talk about the event is volunteer firefighter chris. talk about how powerful that experience was. >> it was a life changer. i was not a volunteer firefighter before this happened. and as soon as i got the opportunity to join the volunteer fire department no thought i joined up and it largely attributed to 9/11. >> this mornings event. tell me about this mornings event. the idea behind it obviously you are one of the main men here this morning. >> you know, i started doing a stair climb in '06. so this would be any seventh year sixth year doing it. it's a personal attribute for myself with a couple other firefighters. we did it onth pyramid and 101 cal. and this was the first time we decided for the tenth year to broaden it out. and i got a great team of guys from nevada fire and tiburon that helped us in february put together a pretty good show today. we'll have probably just under 300 firefighters. they will climb the building twice. this is really us trying to provide a platform for them to pay attribute. >> and show us a little bit what is going on there. i'm hearing bag pipes. is this all in preparation for today? >> that is exactly right. in about 10-15 minutes the bag pipes will play just to warm up a bit. we'll have someone address the crowd probably the fire chief or mayor. and then they'll have basically we'll have a moment of silence and we'll start heading over to the montgomery side of the tower and they'll begin their climb in waves. >> 343 firefighters perished ten years ago on a personal level what are your thoughts looking back on 9/11? >> you know i believe i'm amazed how we put ourselves back six months to a year after. we thought something else might happen again. to make it ten years and not have a catastrophic event in the city has been been a tribute. more than 2600 people perished at pentagon. 343 firefighters died at ground zero and united flight 93, 40 people died in that field in pennsylvania. just about 30 minutes ago in new york city attendees finished the last of six moments of silent pauses for today's ceremony. four pauses was to mark the time each plane hit the two towers at the world trade center and the time each tower fell. the other two pauses marked the attacks on the pentagon and flight 93. the ceremony all started with the national anthem. ♪ for the land of the free and the home of the brave ♪ >> ceremony followed with first moment of silence and the ringing of bells across new york city. president obama and former president bush then delivered some readings. >> god is our refuge and strength. a very present called a last alarm. the fire chief was here to take place in the event. she told us it's a very emotional day for her. >> it's a matter of paying attribute and honor to those that made the ultimate remember them sculpture. they had candles and flags in hands and the groups served a moment of silence for the 9/11 victims. mayor jean quan says having the vigil in front of the sculpture that honors historical leaders is of great importance. >> i think we are very proud that these statues are in place for this time. i think that was a day when we came together as a nation despite our differences. >> the sculpture is made up of 25 monumental figures in history. there is no evidence this morning that any al qaeda operative has entered the country to carry out a terror attack. officers this weekend are conducting more security sweeps around ground zero and investigators have been look into the theft of two vans from a world trade center contractor. law enforcement remain on alert. investigating a fire that killed two people overnight. it happened on the second floor of a building on coolage avenue. there is an ang puncture business on the ground level of that business. the fire was actually up stairs in a residential unit. witnesses told firefighters they did receive two people fleeing that scene this morning with gas canisters. >> two individuals were found inside the residence. right now we are investigating it. we called out our homicide unit. >> one of the bodies was badly burned and the coroner is trying to identify that victim. the other victim is believed to be a woman. six people were displaced by the fire and the red cross is helping them. also from overnight san francisco police are investigating a robbery and shooting that injured two people. it happened near brooke dale avenue around 8:00 last night. a 22-year-old man was at the basketball courts when two men walked up to him and robbed him. his injuries are life threatening. investigators say a woman that was standing in her front yard was hit by a stray bullet. she is expected to survive. as we have been telling you this morning a remembrance ceremony in honor of the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks is under way in new york city. reporter carter evans is live this morning at ground zero with a look at that new memorial. good morning, carter. >> reporter: hi, mike. they are still reading through the names of all of the people that died here ten years ago today. something significant has happened. it may seem insignificant but it really is significant when you think about it. the relatives of the victims here are finally allowed to walk around this memorial. to pay their respects. take it all in. it hasn't been like this for a very long time. over the past ten years i think it was hard for a lot of people to imagine that this day would ever come. from the pentagon to shanksville, pennsylvania to right here in new york city, it's a day that will never be forgotten. not by victims families, not by any american. >> ten years have past since a perfect blue sky morning turned into the blackest of nights. >> reporter: a decade after the worst terror attack ever on american soil. september 11th is being marked around the country with reflection, resilience, and rebuilding. president obama and first lady michelle obama are visiting all three sites impacted. reporter: elsewhere the city this morning is a ceremony to honor the 343 new york city firefighters killed that day. the events go on under heightened alert. especially here in lower manhattan on thursday officials warned of a credible but unconfirmed potential terror threat with new york city and washington as possible targets. noting terrorists heightened interest in anniversaries. but for the families gathered here at ground zero, the focus is on remembrance. and this is how the tone has changed today. once people started to go in there, it just felt to me at least a lot more relaxed. you see people lying on the grass there taking it in. that is a really good sight to see when you think about it. all of this in the shadow of one world trade there with the american flag on it you see towering high into the sky with years before construction began. that's why it's so nice to see people relaxing here today. for so long after 9/11/2001 there was so many legal battles where this building would be, when it would be built to what the memorial would look like. all of those points of contention but all of those change today. now this is really a sight of remembrance. back to you. >> and carter a lot of tension on new york city. can you talk a little bit about security and what it looks like right now and personally what has been your experience out there this morning. >> reporter: yeah. i got to tell you getting around new york city and manhattan specifically is tough these days. last couple of days. security is obvious. it's very clear that they are cracking down and got this city on lock down. there is also a lot of things we cannot see. one of the most prevalent things i think most people are coming in contact with are the roadblocks. all throughout manhattan vehicle check points. and it's creating a lot of traffic but it's for a good reason. we've got that credible threat out there right now. we don't want to see another event here especially on this solemn day. >> carter evans live for us this morning in new york city. thank you for that report. here in the bay area security will be tightened today at popular tourists spots such as the golden gate bridge. highway patrol will have an increased presence through tomorrow. security has been tighter on that span ever since 9/11. there are now cameras above and below the bridge and more officers have been hired to patrol the bridge and the surrounding areas. law enforcement will also be out in full force at this afternoon's 49ers game at candle stick park. the fbi will assist with security at the team's regular season home opener. the san francisco field office is not revealing its role. san francisco police say fans should expect more officers than usual. the fbi plans to help with security at all 13 nfl games today. you can watch the niners seattle sea hawks game at 1:00 p.m.. new this morning terrorist plot foiled in sweden. they arrested four people on suspicion of preparing a terrorist attack. authorities evacuated an art center. sweden's second largest city. they deem the threat a serious danger to life, health, and property. investigators won't say if the terror plot was linked to the 9/11 anniversary. also new this morning at least 80 american soldiers are wounded and two afghan civilians are dead after a suicide bombing in afghanistan. the attack happened yesterday on the eve of the tenth anniversary of 9/11. it was carried out by a suicide bomber who detonated a large bomb inside a truck carrying firewood. taking matters into their own hands. the new patrols to stop violence in san francisco's mission district and the mixed feelings we are finding. we want to give you another live look from new york city. that is the memorial there at the and temperatures inlandslide a little bit. back to you. >> thanks. cal train is back on schedule after a man was struck and killed by a train in san francisco. it happened yesterday at 5:30 in the evening. the train was carrying 265 passengers. none of them were injured. it's not clear if the incident was an accident or a suicide. according to cal train, this is the 13th death on the cal train tracks this year. the guardian angels are on patrol of a spike in violence. there have been at least three killings over the last two weeks. the guardian angels have spent the last two nights in the mission district in response to that violence. the group notifies police before it goes out. they say there were no major problems so far this weekend but there have been a few minor flair ups. >> and he pushed me. he's not supposed to touch me. >> i couldn't let that guy get up close to me. we know our procedures and follow them to the best of our ability but it's that corner. >> they are not and tell this country what those people meant to them. they were fathers and mothers and wives and sons and daughters and certainly has been emotional to watch. we have seen the family members as they have been let into ground zero. many as you can see they were holding pictures of their loved ones. at the heart of today's ceremony is the new memorial to the victims. it features two manmade towers. i think you are struck by the continuing flow of family members into this memorial. they have been coming in for hours and hours now. and the line is still filling the city block as people wait to come in and pay their respects. this is the first chance family members are getting to see the memorial. and not just the memorial but the name of their loved one etched on brass plates around that water fall. clearly it is a moving moment for many of the folks. ten years to the day since the worst terror atax on u.s. soil families of the 2700 killed at ground zero finally get to see the memorial built in their loved ones honor. >> while september 11th was a tragedy for our nation as a whole, it was most importantly a tragedy for each and every one of those families who lost loved ones, family members, friends, colleagues that day. >> reporter: at the center of the memorial honoring those lost are water falls creating a new peaceful footprint where the twin towers once stood. the names of the victims are inscribed on the pool. >> i came down here because this is the one event i thought i could handle but it's very hard. i saw the whole thing. >> reporter: security around new york city is very tight these weekend. residence and visitors alike say the mood on the anniversary is somber and somewhat tense. >> you can hear a pin drop on this really, really packed subway train. it was you know almost like everybody was kind of saying their prayers to themselves. >> reporter: many say as they pay their respects and remember those lost there is also hope. >> i think about it every day. not a day goes by when i don't think about it. i just hope we don't i hope the country doesn't suffer an attack like this again. it's a terrible thing. i hope we get the terrorism under control. >> reporter: now keep in mind as you look at this live picture of ground zero, everybody that you see inside that memorial site has a direction connection to someone that was killed ten years ago today. today is reserved just for family and loved ones but the memorial will open to the general public tomorrow by reservation only. officials say they have already had hundreds of thousands of requests and expect millions more by the end of the year. >> jennifer before we let you go. i want to ask you how the names are actually arranged on that memorial. i know each name of the victim is inscribed there down by the reflection pool. >> reporter: this is so interesting because if you visit most memorials the names of victims are generally listed in alphabetical order or perhaps birth order. here they wanted to do something more complex but something far more meaningful. they grouped people by association. they sent out requests to family. they got 1200 responses back. everyone that worked for fitzgearld all of their names are together. all the firefighters from a specific department are together. there was a man who was coming down the stairwell and he saw someone in need he stopped and stayed with that man and then they both died in the stairwell and their two names are next to each other as well. families really responding to that and saying they are extremely touched by that gesture and to see all of the connections that were made on that day. >> very symbolic indeed. jennifer davis live for us this morning. thank you for that report. and stay a light breeze. pentagon this morning more than 1600 people including 100 survivors gathered at the site of the 9/11 attacks. alison burns covered it for us and joins us live with the very latest. >> reporter: claudine, we want to give you a lack now at a live look outside the pentagon building. the emotional anniversary service has ended and now the family members and friends of the 184 people that died here a decade ago are walking through the memorial. some of them taking pictures near the benches that bare their loved ones name. earlier members of the armed services put flowers on each of the benches. and in a dramatic reminder of the show of patriotism in the days immediately after the attacks, a giant american flag hangs again near the spot where the plane hit the building. vice president joe biden praised what he called the nerve generation and america's resolve. >> al qaeda, and bin laden never imagined that the 3,000 people that lost their lives that day would inspire three million to put on the uniform. they never imagined the sleeping giant they were about to awaken. >> reporter: now let's get back to a live look at the pentagon. president obama will participate in a wreath laying ceremony at the memorial later today. there has been anxiety here in d.c. about the possibility of another attack. police say reports of suspicious vehicles are up. we have seen more searches around the u.s. capitol building this morning. but so far as far as we know there has been nothing that has turned up that has been indicative of a terrorist threat. reporting live from washington, d.c. alison burns ktvu channel 2 news. as you may recall vice president george w. bush was visiting second grade students. they remember reading to president bush that day and many of them recall how his expression changed when he found out about the attacks. >> i asked myself what good would it have done if he had left immediately or if he had panicked and what kind of impression that would have left on not only the students but the nation as a whole. >> none of us knew what the world trade center was. trying to learn something and then trying to learn what happened to that. >> the students teachers says she remembers how hard it was to explain what was happening to a group of seven-year-olds. but the students say her their teacher it'd a good job. >> bay area first responders are paying attribute to those that lost their lives ten years ago. hundreds of san francisco firefighters and police officers stood at attention during the beginning of the ceremony yesterday. they were joined by city, state, and federal government leaders to honor the victims of 9/11. >> we are all united in our sorrow and how impressed we were by the courage of our first responders how they came to the rescue and recovery. >> that memorial ended with taps and as we've been reporting this morning every station in san francisco will be open to the public today for people to pay their respects. a bay area mother is among the people in shanksville, pennsylvania who are remembering the passengers of united flight 93. mark being ham died when that plane crashed into an open field. she was inspired by her son and others. >> it was really a scene. it was really horrifying and yet it was wonderful to know that a little group of guys could make such a big difference on that day. >> she also says she is very proud her son was able to come out to her and she is actively involved in the gay community. this afternoon at 1:00 p.m. in the castro there will be a ceremony honoring mark and other victims of september 11th. right now in new york a bay area family is remembering a woman who even in the face of terror stayed calm and relayed critical information to ground crews ten years ago today. betty grew up in san francisco and was a flight attendant on flight 11. her family still struggles to come to terms with her loss. >> reporter: even though harry knows better, part of him still wishes he was on flight 11 to help his baby sister fight the terrorists that sent her plane into the north tower of the world trade center. >> and the protector of the family. and the fact that my guilt i had to really deal with this the fact i wasn't on her plane to help her. >> reporter: the world knows of his sister's courage. a flight attendant she calmly relayed critical information to the ground in the moments before the crash. >> we cannot not get into the cockpit. the door won't open. >> reporter: her first call was to american airlines and her last call. they told us of the night her sister found he dad in tear. >> she said why are you cry something and my dad says i always sit out here 2:00, 3:00 in the morning watching cnn. i just want to hear some news that betty is coming home. >> reporter: usually on september 11th, the family marks it privately. today, they will spend it in new york. >> i thought about it, and i said maybe we shouldn't go back. and maybe we should just go back at a different time but at the same time i do feel we owe it to betty. >> betty's brother says on this anniversary he hopes that the community gains patriotism. it's important for everyone to keep their eyes open and protect each other. football returns to the bay area today. the predictions for the niners this morning as their nfl season officially kicks off. i want to give
