The mother and child were in the crosswalk last night when they were hit according to the chp. Here is the crosswalk they were in off of westbound tennyson road to northbound 880. As you can imagine, this is an area where cars pick up speed as drivers head on the freeway. This is where the bomb and 1 yearold son were this is where the woman and 1yearold son were walking across the street. The son was in the stroller when the crash happened at 7 00. The white suv slammed into the 21yearold mother and 1year old son, both left with major injuries. The driver who hit them was a 22yearold woman from hayward that stayed here at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. It doesnt look like she was under the influence at the time of the crash. The chp will be looking at whether the time of day and setting sun may have contributed to the crash and the chp is trying to figure out how fast the suv was going as the driver entered the freeway. At this point we are unable to determine if the vehicle was, in fact, speeding, or entering at an agreeable speed. The driver isnt sited as of yet and was allowed to leave after the accident and talking with investigators. There is one more issue, potential issue here at the crosswalk. There are no meter or light that lets people know when it is safe to cross here at this freeway entrance so you are sort of on your own as you cross this street. There have been several recent fires including this one, a big Apartment Building fire in january where one person died and 20 others were left homeless. Today San Francisco supervisor david compose questioned the Fire Department and building inspectors about the cautions and frequency of fires in the mission and why it is happening more often there than in other neighborhoods. Counselors at San Francisco Juvenile Hall say they want to be able to carry mace and pepper spray. The examiner made the request last week at a juvenile Probation Commission hearing. The counselors say since they dont carry weapon, pepper spray helps in case of trouble, however city Officials Say pepper spray has the potential for misuse. He didnt want to be a silent bystander and having his baristas openly engaged with customers about race relation, it would be helpful. If a customer asked you what this is, try and engage in a discussion. We have problems in this country with regard to race and racial inequality and we believe we are better than this. Reporter it has people talking, especially on social media, but it hasnt been all positive. Some people dont want to delve into a big talk about racial inequality while they are trying to rush off to work. Others are saying it will make them uncomfortable. One starbucks executive got so many angry tweets he had to delete his twitter account. A lot of people are saying starbucks should stay out of it. Schultz is telling the baristas if the customers dont want the words race together on their cups to give them a new cup and drop the conversation.
