Now at 5 03 lets go back to the desk. A cal train accident in menlo park has left a woman dead after her car apparently got stuck on the tracks. Now cal train has a warning for all other drivers this morning. Janine de la vega is joining us live now. Youre in menlo park. What is that warning janine . Reporter well, first off let me tell you cal train just passed by here. So the schedule is back to normal here. I do want to show you the repair crews that are here because again this was badly damaged in the accident late yesterday afternoon. Cal train says the woman most likely had cars in front of her and she got stuck at the tracks here. Cal train Officials Say oftentimes traffic gets back up at the location all across the Railroad Tracks and drivers stop on the tracks. They say this happened just before 5 00 p. M. A southbound train coming from san mateo hit the womans suv sending it 40 feet through the intersection. The suv was totaled and the woman was rushed to sanford hospital. She died of her injuries. Our heart goes out to the family, of course. This is a tragedy. We just want to remind people, dont stop on the tracks. People have to understand that its not safe to do that. Even with all the Safety Devices we have in place. And dont go across the tracks until you are sure you can get all the way across. Reporter the accident halted trains in both directions. The train involved in the accident was damaged and taken out of service. The trains top speed at 79 miles an hour and could take 5 6 miles for them to stop. There was a similar accident where a truck stalled. The driver was able to get out before a Union Pacific train hit the truck. Transportation officials want drivers not to take chances. Make sure you have plenty of room between the car in front of you so you are not stuck on the tracks here. I did speak to one of the crew members who is doing repairs here and asked how long would they be out there . When will this be open to vehicle traffic . He didnt have an estimate. Santa clara county residents you will get a chance to say how you feel about a controversial system that lets sheriffs deputies track people through their cell phones. 9 00 a. M. Public hearing will be held by the county board of supervisors. The system would be used to help find criminals, missing people, and others based on court orders. Similar system is called sting ray. Its already being used in san jose, in oakland, and fremont. San Francisco City officials are looking at ways to increase Public Transportation late at night. An estimated 50,000 people work nights in San Francisco but muni runs only a skeletal late night service. Bart shuts down at 12 30. Yesterday San Francisco supervisors scott weiner released Task Force Recommendations to increase Early Morning bus and train services. Restaurants and bar owners say they would definitely benefit. We are missing a whole 90 minutes of customer time. Now the report also recommends that bart offer 24 hour service but the agency says it cant run around the clock because it has to shut down the system to perform maintenance work. Two state lawmakers taking action over the morality clauses for teachers at San Francisco catholic schools. According to the examiner, phil tang and ken mullen they are calling for an investigation of working conditions at the schools. Lawmakers asked the archbishop to remove devicive clauses. Those clauses according to those lawmakers may violate workers civil rights. Its expected to be business as usual this morning at the port of oakland. Now the night shift at the port was uneventful which was a good thing for shippers, for dock workers, and for Truck Drivers that go in and out of the port. It has been months since the port has been at full staffing on the night and weekend shifts. I work more in the last few days than i have in the last few months. Today was relatively smooth. We were able to get it in and out without any problems. Even though the workers are back on the jobs it may take as long as two months to clear the docks of all the containers. And it could take that long to get the deal between shipping companies and the dock workers approved by the union. Health experts say our ongoing drought could mean a bad year for west nile virus. According to new figures from the state health department, last year there were 798 human cases of west nile and that is the most since 2005. 29 of those cases ended in death, tied for the highest number on record. Later today San Francisco supervisor mark farr row will introduce a plan to ban tobacco products. This would apply to more than just at t park. The crews says that toward the end of the shift he mentioned his boyfriend was robbery suspect gilbert rent roadway yeah who died in the final shootout with police. Firefighters now want to know how she was approved by the city for a ride along in the first place. They are going to be in pipless homes. They are going to be looking at what we do. We need to make sure citizens are safe and firefighters are safe. Stockton police say tovar has a record of loitering and prostitution. She said she needed the ride along hours for a paramedic program. It appears hackers cut in line when tickets for this years burning manifest value went on sale wednesday. The amount of moisture in the air has come up considerably temperatures will rebound back to where we were yesterday. The lows are so much colder. Its tough to warm up. Its 5 33 lets go back to the desk. It was six months ago today that a magnitude 6. 0 earthquake shook the napa and surrounding areas. It was the bay areas largest earthquake since the leo mappery et that quake in 1989. It also caused millions of dollars in damage. Tara moriarty is in napa this morning. Some of the repair work hasnt even started yet and tara, it may never happen. Reporter that is right. We are here at the post office which is on 2nd street and it has been closed since the earthquake struck. You can see a lot of people miss this particular post office. They have put all of these hearts up here on the fence. This one says save our post office. You can see that the repairs are looking like theyre about to get started here. We know the official estimate for damages throughout the city was 444 million. But a Risk Management company says the really is twice that much. Safeway was supposed to open in d but so far no word. Many say Disaster Relief was not enough to cover their losses. It wasnt the only hotel damaged by the quake. We definitely saw a dip in our hotel tax. Our transient occupancy tax during that period of time that we had a couple of hotels being repaired. Reporter the company that owns napa selfstorage says its about to demolish the red tag building with all of the contents inside. That is unless 70 of the effect the tenants agree to help pay for the repair costs. Tenants are very angry. Its been six months since Nicholas Dillon was severely injured when the chimney at his house collapsed. One of the most memorable memories during his recovery is visiting the warriors and one of his injuries was a broken pelvis. Doctors expected it to take six months for them to walk again. He surprised them and is practicing soccer again. He says surviving the quake has changed his life. He now appreciates every day hes alive. Time is 5 35. Heres a warning for you parents that use social media to post photos of your children. They are already saying think piece. A lot of teenage girls are using those photos to role play their future. Parents are now pushing sites like facebook and instagram to step up enforcement of those accounts. My sons photo was her cover page and she had taken photos from my blog and put them on her timeline and pretending it was her son. They say this kind of behavior violates the terms of service agreement. But many mothers online claim they still have problems getting those photos removed. The easiest way to keep this from happening is keep photos of your children extremely private. The Public Health officer for marin county is raising concerns about the possibility of a resurgence of polio. Dr. Matthew says marin county is a dangerous combination with a high rate of people that are not vaccinated against the disease. Combined with a large number who travel internationally. Polio is currently present in Nine Countries worldwide. It can be fatal or leave a person paralyzed. Back in the 1940s and 50s, polio was one of the most feared diseases among parents. It paralyzed and killed more than a half a Million People every year. 19791979 the United States declared the disease eradicated. George shirakawa has changed his plea. Now he has entered a no contest plea that involves a Fake Campaign flier. His lawyer is asking that shirakawa be sentenced to community service. He was already sentenced to a year in jail for stealing 130,000 in Campaign Donations and public money to finance a gambling debt. Some San Francisco crosswalks are about to get a bold new look. Now when it reopens they want drivers to remember not to take any chances. Dont try to make it over the tracks. If the crossing bars are going down. Dont even stop your car on the tracks. Just before 5 00 yesterday afternoon an suv was stopped on the tracks when a southbound train coming from san mateo crashed into it. It sent the vehicle 40 feet across the intersection totallying it. The female driver in her 30s had to be extricated and taken to the hospital. She ended up dying from her injuries. Cal train says preliminary investigation shows the Railroad Gate crossing was working properly at the time of the crash. Sometimes at peak commute hours traffic will back up to the Railroad Tracks and thats what happened somebody stopped on the tracks. Trains are back to running on schedule through the ravens wood crossing. Crews are working around them. They are doing repairs to the gates and warning lights here. Cal train says their thoughts are with the family of the woman who died but they do want people to remember that their trains top speed is 79 miles an hour. It could take 56 miles for them to stop. They want drivers to know even though the crossing gate even if they are not down yet, dont even take any chances. Again physical traffic is backed up, dont even think about stopping your vehicle here on the tracks. Also i do want to mention these crews are going o be out here throughout the morning. They didnt have a time estimate on when this is going to open back up. So pam, dave, again you know people should be detouring around this area. All right that is good to know. Thank you for that update. 5 45 is the time. Cal train is investigates another death along the tracks. This one in San Francisco. It happened in a tunnel near 18th street and interstate 280. Cal train says an out of Service Train hit a man that was inside that tunnel. Its still unclear what the man was doing there. Our time is 5 45. Mitch mcconnell says he is willing to separate a bill that is blocking president obamas executive orders from a bill that would fund the Homeland Security department. Its another way to get the senate unstuck from a democratic filibuster and move the debate forward. He hopes a clean bill separating those two issues will pass now to fund the department of Homeland Security before fridays deadline. President obama speaking at a gathering of governors says its the Homeland Security workers who will be effected. Unless Congress Acts one week from now more than 100,000dhs employees, border patrol, court inspectors, tsa agents will show up to work without getting paid. Now because about 85 of Homeland Security employees are deem the essential, they would still have to show up for work.
