But again 29, 37, 121 and of course interstate 80 are all open for business if if you are driving in the area right now the morning commute looks pretty typical. There are slow downs here and there. Lets go to this live picture now. Westbound bay bridge that traffic looks good coming into San Francisco. And if you are driving on 237 westbound, that is a light commute on the way out. 5 01 lets go back to the desk. We are still following the latest developments on that magnitude 6. 0 earthquake. The quake was centered near American Canyon. A lot of damage reported. Work crews have been keeping an eye on the damaged buildings there. But first lets go to alex savidge. Youre in downtown napa. Dozens of buildings red tagged and more will be checked out today. Reporter at that huge chunk that came crashing down yesterday when the shaking began at 3 20 in the morning. This is a common site as we move throughout the downtown area. As many as 100 buildings have been red tagged because of yesterdays earthquake. All of them too dangerous to go inside. Many of those buildings are older buildings like this one. They have that unreenforced masonry that came crashing down. Many city and county offices will be closed because of damage done to those billings as well. And all across the downtown area they had shattered windows. Merchandise that came crashing down to the floors. The force of the quake threw me off the toilet. The other big issue today is trying to figure out how much damage may have been done to the schools in this area. And with that in mind because there is no answer really at this point to that question, napa schools all of them will be closed today. Inspectors will move in to check for damage. And then at 1 00 they will make an announcement as to whether or not they will be. Damage like this is everywhere. The exact dollar amount in terms of damage they cant estimate yet. Live in downtown napa alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. Meantime a second Evacuation Center has been opened by the red cross to help give people a place to stay. Both are open for over night stays. The red cross says for now they are not accepting donations of food or clothing but they will accept financial donations. Ktvu janine de la vega is joining us. That is right. We are here on georgia street. The road is blocked off. There is public crews. They have been here over night. Keeping an eye on this building on georgia street because part of the wall there up on the forth floor it came crumbling down. It is structural unsafe. Here is video of the building yesterday. From the outside it looks fine. We are told bricks and debris came tumbling down. Its vacant but the adjacent buildings have apartments on the second floor. That was just one of the buildings red tagged. Windows have been boarded up. And there is still a lot of cleanup. I got the mortar in my hair. Reporter public work crews tell me a crane will be brought in here sometime today on georgia street to remove the wall of that building that i was telling you that is unsafe. And again we did check in with vallejo water. They tell us there was 15 water main breaks yesterday but at this point they say everything is fixed as far as water main breaks those are repaired. As far as pg e outages, nothing in the stay of vallejo. But in nearby American Canyon there is still people without power. We will stay on top of this and monitor the situation as soon as other crews arrive here in the city. Emotions are rubbing why hep four homes were blown to the ground. Many say they feared for their lives. The tv. The cabinet. All of it. It was all in pitch dark. The quake also ruptured the water line that feds the park. Federal emergency officials have flown over the napa area. Examing the quake damage from the air. After that the federal government will decide what it will do for the quake victims. Some will ask their current city for helps. Many homeowner policies exclude quake sentence. The cost of quake insurance it varies. It depends on the location, the size, and what the home is made of. San Francisco Police say a man crossing gyri boulevard was killed after being hit by a muni bus. Police tell us the man was not in a crosswalk when the bus hit him. The name of the man killed has not been released but police say they will have more information later this morning. We also have new information on the tragic hit and run death of a twoyearold girl in San Francisco. According to the San Francisco chronicle, police say the girls aunt was talking on her cell phone when she left the toddler unaintended right in the middle of mission street. That is when a car hit and killed the little girl. Police believe the hit and run driver was in a light colored lexus honda or toyota camry with dark rims. I feel kind of fine. It stings a bit but not as much as it would sting. Coming up in 28 minutes the emergency room response. A 9 yearold church a 98 yearold church in napa is off limits after the quake did significant damage to the building. This is at fifth and randolph streets in napa. It separated from the roof line. We are told a lot of damage was done to the inside of that church as well. A couple in napa got a rude awakening when part of their bed fell on to them. They were pinned beneath their head board and two mirrors. They couldnt get out and they started yelling. Call for help and our neighbors eventually heard us. These pictures are from another home in the same area where class ware and plates tumbled. The big quake in napa struck almost ten hours before sundays 49ers game. But the quake still had a direct impact on fans going to the 49ers game. Crews spent most of the morning inspecting the light rail tracks heading into the stadium. That caused 20 minute delay for many fans. We saw the test train go through and then the train with all the passengers came by. So i could see that they actually took care of that. Cal train was still able to provide special service to the game. However, fans hoping to ride an ace train they were out of luck. Ace canceled its service because of the extensive track inspections. Concerns over the quake and possible transit trouble may have effected attendance at yesterdays game. There were tens of thousands of empty seats during the 49ers preseason game against the chargers. 49ers ended up with their first preseason victory. They beat san diego 217. Sundays game was also the first real test of the new turf at levis stadium. Jim harbaugh called for replacement sod after several players found themselves slipping and sliding on the field during practice last week. The 49ers say the turf used yesterday was a big improvement but its still just a temporary solution. You can see traffic continues to look good into the bay bridge toll plaza region. And there are no major problems as you drive through. As a matter of fact on the lower deck of the bay bridge and the other side traffic is moving along very well. We have been telling you highway 37 is open. Highway 29 also open and 121. The major roads are open but downtown napa city streets some of them are closed because of debris from the earthquake. Debris came back on to the street. Those streets are not passable. The major roads in the area through American Canyon, valet vallejo are good. There is the low. Its favoring california which is a little twist into the forecast. People in napa they are making the best out of yesterdays quake devastation but in one neighborhood they are actually making the damage into something fun. A skate border name dillon robinson. This fire spread very quickly right after the quake. Sending people who lived here mostly seniors scrambling for their lives. Some people tried to snuff the flames out. And then they turned their attention to rescuing neighbors. With tvs and furniture in their way and a fire outside spreading. Many say they were afraid they wouldnt make it out alive. The tv. The cabinet. All of it. Two tvs they were all coming at me. And it was all pitch dark. Reporter the quake also ruptured the water line that feeds the complex. Fire crews had too little water pressure. There as many as three dozen homes with structural damage. In the wake of this quake, we know that nearly 50 people total have registered. The second is at the Florence Douglas center in vallejo. We will hit the shelters later on this morning and see if we can debt get the survivor stories. It does say some were older buildings that were not reenforce maryland enforced. 33 buildings in napa has been red tagged. Some county employees are being asked not to report to work unless specifically asked to do so. Schools are open today in vallejo but there will be no classes for the entire Valley School district. This sects 19 elementary schools, five middle schools and five high schools. Now this afternoon at 1 00 there will be an announcement on whether schools will open tomorrow. With boys and schools closed will be open today. Napa clubhouse on pueblo avenue and American Canyon clubhouse. They will open at 10 00 a. M. They will stay open until 6 00 p. M. Any student between 618 years old you are welcome to come by and membership is not required. 600 homes are still without water. Napa has set up three water stations to provide Drinking Water for people. Those stations are at Memorial Stadium at napa high school. The Community Center in north napa. And the parking lot on the knot side of pearl street. People that need water are asked to bring their own containers. Power has been restored to 99 of the customers that lost power. There are also 20 earthquake related gas disruption. The quake damage extended beyond napa. Vallejo was also hit hard. And there are millions of dollars in damage. We are here on georgia street that has been completely blocked off to traffic. City officials are concerned crews have been watching it over night. We were there yesterday getting video of lots of the shattered glass. A loft of the windows there were boarded up and its left some residents feeling uneasy. Really nervous. And all over the news its been saying if you have brick, have it inspected. I was woke up by mortar in my hair and all over the apartment. Damage done has prompted the red cross to set up shelter. Public work crews are supposed to be back here on georgia street. They are going to bring in a crane and they will be tearing down that wall they are concerned about. There are no Power Outages here in vallejo. As far as the walter brain break, all of that is okay. All 15 that occurred yesterday they were all quicked at 8 00 last night. There has been a steady flow of patients into the emergency room. However, the hospital staff says most of those injuries are minor injuries and most people suffered just cuts and bruises. I fell off of my bed and i just hit my head on the its be a very business receive day. One 13yearold boy was first listed in critical condition. He was hit by debris from a collapsing chimney. His condition has been upgraded from critical to serious. And then there is this story. A baby born at napa queen of the valley medical center. This is a picture of sanchez and his proud father. Both the baby and mom are doing fine. Both parents were at the babys side when that quake hit and jolted their hospital room. This morning some pet owners still looking for caths and dogs that were spooked and took off. The shelters Facebook Page has pictures of those animals that are looking for their owners. That is because there is a danger buildings may collapse. But tourism Officials Say visitors dont need to stay away from other parts of the napa valley. Wineries in yountville, st. Helena, and calistoga say they have very little damage. The force of the quake blew out most of the windows in the control tower. News chapper 2 flew by and checked out the damage yesterday. The tower itself stood strong. Flights continued to take off and land at napa. However, the control tower wont be usable until new windows are put in. That is probably going to take several weeks. The airport will remain open, pilots talking directly to each other the way they do when the tower is closed down at nighttime. The cleanup will continue at a napa apartment complex where the roof collapsed on to cars. At least four carports were damaged yesterday at the charter oak apartments just to the west of downtown napa. City crews will be busy working on the damaged roads. It caused significant damage as you saw on highway 121. Large crack spreads right across the road. Crews will also been working between the corner of white cliff and twin oaks. Time is 5 47. The metering lights have gone on in the last few minutes and traffic is backed up to the mccarthur maze. Already kind of a monster commute coming out of the Livermore Valley this morning. Westbound 580 very slow as you come out toward the area. I want to mention something that is not on my maps. In santa rosa it looks like an injury accident. We will run that down for you. We are also checking sonoma and napa county. All the major roads are open there. Some city streets in downtown napa are closed because of damage to buildings nearby. Now lets go to steve.
