We continue to follow the developing news in napa county where fire crews continue to battle a wild fire. People who are forced to evacuate are wondering what has become of their homes. The fire began around noon yesterday in butts canyon. At last check it has burned 2700 acres and is 30 contained. Mandatory evacuations are in place for people who live in the bareges is a estates. People are also being told to leave their homes. Five buildings have been damaged as well. Over night a cal fire spokesman told us the buildings were mostly barns and sheds but one may have been a house. There happen been a major fire in the area for years which is making this one harder to fight. The red cross has set up two evacuation places for people to leave their homes. It shows just somehow stretched the city resources are. On monday afternoon a wild grass fire forced people to leave their homes in south san jose. The fire captain says if they are ever in need of more help, they will call in off duty forecasts or ask for help from nearby cities. Its much worse over the hills. As we take a look behind me here, there is still spots here that are hot. People from about 180 homes in berryessa estates have been evacuated. They are going to two red cross shelters set up. As of now this fire is 30 contained. We are told about 50 people did not make it out of their homes on time. So they are sheltering in place and cal fire says it is confident that they are safe because crews created fuel breaks around those homes. At least five buildings however have burned to the ground. It does look like most of those were out buildings, barns, sheds. One of them potentially a residence we are trying to determine if it was occupied or lived in. Reporter the fire began around noon yesterday and quickly scorched hundreds of acres of wooded hillsides parched by years of drought. The bone dry conditions and extreme heat obviously added fuel to the fire. While we do not know exactly what caused the fire, we are hearing reports that some young men accidentally started the fire while clearing weeds with power tools. This was the scene just moments after the fire started at 1 30 this morning at the home near 105 avenue. No one was home at the time. Firefighters say the intense fast moving flames gutted the home and forced the evacuation of a house next door. The fire was extinguished fairly quickly. We had one exposure that was threatened but did not burn. Investigators are expected to return to the scene later this morning as they try to pinpoint the cause of the fire. Hayward police will start using small video body mounted cameras to record their encounters with the public before the end of the year. The City Council Approved bying the cameras that attached to an officers uniform or glasses and record video and audio. It could help cut claims of officers using Excessive Force by as much as 50 . There was no public opposition to the plan and wearing the cameras will be mandatory. There is growing frustration about a rash of car break ins. One man who asked us not to reveal his identity takes amtrak daily from oakland to santa clara. He says his truck was broken into twice within the last two months. Most recently on friday. Four other vehicles were vandalized in the same lot on the same day. It just doesnt feel good that your belongings were ripped apart. They didnt steal anything. They just straight up vandalism. He also complained to an amtrak employee and says he was told to just park at a different station. Cal tran is warning drivers to get ready for delays and detours of the interstate closure of 280 begins at 9 00 tonight. Cal tran is closing northbound lanes between the 101, 280 interchange and downtown San Francisco for freeway repair work. The closure is scheduled to last the entire fourth of july weekend until 5 00 on monday morning. The southbound lanes of interstate 280 will stay open. A stretch of southbound 280 was closed over the memorial day weekend for a similar highway repair project. Another 280 closure is planned for the Labor Day Holiday weekend. Berkeley city council thinks it has come up with a way to deal with the out of control squirrel population in one waterfront park. The city will make it a crime or planning to make it a crime to feed squirrels and other animals in all of the city parks. The major problem with the critters was here in Caesar Chavez park along the waterfront which is built right on top of a landfill. The squirrels have been burring holes in the dirt and they are concerned that could lead through a toxic leak. Originally the city was considering killing the squirrels but that led to a public outcry. The council formed a special squirrel subcommittee to come up with a solution and the best way to control the critters was to simply stop feeding them.
