As we look at commute at the bay bridge toll plaza, traffic here doesnt look that bad. As a matter of fact, it looks great into San Francisco. Less than eight minutes. As i look at the south bay map, you can see a little flashing icons with the road worker there, a couple of them near 280 and 880 and the other places. I will tell you we have no reported slow downs because of it and there are no collisions or stalled vehicles reported in the Santa Clara Valley. Lets go back to the desks. Back to the breaking news story we first told you about at 4 30. Earlier this morning four people escaped from a house fire on chase street in novato. Ktvu Tara Moriarty is there now. Tara, the crews are still putting out hot spots. Correct . Reporter yes, that is right. At first crews thought this fire was suspicious because there had been drug activity in the area. They dont know what sparked this fire. Its under investigation. If you take a look behind me, you can see there is plenty of crews here on scene. They are squelching hot spots. These flames breaking out in an attached garage and home off of chase street. Someone called 911 around 3 15 this morning. Crews arrived within four minutes. We were told four people that live if the main house were able to get out safely. The fire gutted the garage. It damaged two coarse and blew out the windows of the homes kitchen. The house, the fire was up a long narrow driveway. So it was an extended time. Reporter 40 firefighters tackled the flames. No one was hurt and interesting side note this property was once part of the mansion. That is what we were told by a firefighter here. That is where the area where it broke out the fire broke out was the servant headquarters. Jesuits once used the mansion as a retreat and grateful dead leased the property to make music. Now the state park has acquired the land. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Coming up we will talk to the homeowner. We will tell you how he used a garden hose to put the fire out. They left Lawrence Cook middle school this honor of andy lopez. He was the 13yearold boy shot and killed by a sheriffs deputy. He was carrying a fake gun that deputy thought he was real. More than two dozen students participated in yesterdays wacout. We are going to do it for 30 minutes. After leaving the middle school, the students marched to a nearby high school which prompted a lockdown. The superintendent is expected to release a statement early this morning. A fiveyearold girl in oakland is in the hospital this morning after being hit in the eye by a paint ball. It happened last night on ninth street. The little girl was riding in a car with her mother when someone in a passing car shot a paint ball through an open window. She is listed in serious condition and still being treated for her eye injury. Police are looking for the teenager who witnesses say fired that paint ball. Rail cars they dont run over night but there is a new push to have both muni and bart expand service into the Early Morning hours. Alex savidge is live in San Francisco to tell us what is behind this new push. Alex. Reporter supervisor scott weiner here in center lane wants bart and muni to begin running 24 hours a day. He says its both an economic issue for the city and the region and also a safety issue as well. Yesterday supervisor weiner introduced a resolution that would create a working group to focus on late night transportation. He says right now there are simply limited options for people who work off hours in the city and those who visit bars and clubs and leaving late at night and want to get back to the east bay and other parts of the bay area. Those who support expanded hours for bart and muni say San Francisco east nighttime economy employs about 50,000 people and generates about 50 million in tax revenue. The owner of a San Francisco bakery told us the lack of overnight transit options can hurt when it comes to hiring. I had one attractive resume after another but all of them lived in the east bay. The group will report back to the board of supervisors six months from now with possible solutions for after hours transit options. New developments in the case of a suspected burglar in richmond. Contra costa prosecutors have charged two of the burglars accomplices with his murder even though they did not shoot him. Their actions put in motion the circumstances that caused the victim to be shot. Now the Marin County Sheriffs Department says it wants people to know there is no serial attacker on the loose on mt. Tam. There has been speculation about an attacker on mt. Tam after the separate discoveries of the bodies of two women. Park officials in Golden Gate Park they are searching for thieves that are ripping plants right out of the ground. Forging in the park that is against the law. A man who lives across the street from Golden Gate Park who asked not to be identified says he confronted four elderly women about a month ago who were stealing what appeared to be wild ginger plants. Topping our news at this hour, we are continuing to follow breaking news out of though have toe where four people escaped from a house fire. It started at 3 30 this morning in a garage of a house in novato. I want to take you there live this morning. We are being told that firefighters are still putting out hot spots and then they will begin to investigate how this fire started. At first crews thought the fire was suspicious but that does not seem to be the case. When firefighters arrived they had trouble getting up the long driveway. They were able to stop the flames from spreading. Fortunately there was very little damage to the house itself. The fire was stopped before it was spread inside the house. We are also being told that this home might be part of bay area history. One firefighter says the garage where the fire started was the Service Quarters for the mansion in the 1960s that mansion was known as the white house of hippy. It was home to a commune known as the chosen family. It was home to the grateful dead. A San Francisco firefighter is recovering after hot roofing tar fell on to his hands. The 911 call came in just after 2 00 yesterday afternoon. Minutes later firefighters got there. They found strong winds that spread the flames to the attic and the roof of two nearby buildings. Firefighters say the homes there are very old, they are made of wood and because they are so close together, firefighters say that wind became an even bigger problem. At times the wind direction shifted. When we initially got here it was pushing the fire toward the building on the left. About ten minutes into the fire the wind direction swirled and switched. Now three buildings were damaged in this. Everyone who lives in the buildings had to leave for the night. That firefighter who was hurt suffered moderate burns but he will recover. There is new information about the teenager who survived a five hour flight from san jose to maui in the wheel well of a Hawaiian Airlines jet. We are here at the home of that teenager who managed to survive in that amazing environment in the wheel well of the boeing 767. We are hoping the family will come from the home and comment and give us some insight into this incredible survivor story. We are learning more about the teen and just how much time he spent on the runway at the airport. We have learned the teen arrived hours before that flight took off. Spending as much as six or seven hours on the tarmac. Unnamed sources in maui are saying hawaii was not the teens destination. He was trying to make it back to somalia to see his mother. The boy is a student at nearby Santa Clara High School where the school is ready to welcome him back. And students are happy he survived. I was really shocked. Just really glad he made it and hes all right right now. Just worried about his family. Reporter we also have an update on the boy in maui. The department of Human Services says the boy is resting comfortably at honolulu hospital and they are arranging his safe return back to northern california. Still no word when that will take place. We are hoping to gain insight on when that teen will be returning back here. Live in santa clara Christien Kafton ktvu channel 2 news. Hawaiian airlines has released this statement. Hawaii and its contractors responsible for handling our aircraft in san jose will continue to assist Government Agencies in their investigation of this incident. The stow away understand accident could lead to major changes in security at san jose airport. The director of the airport says she is working to make sure no one sneaks on to the airfield ever again. She made her first Public Comments on the incident. Critics are demanding to know how the boy scaled a pence, got on to tarmac and spent six or seven hours before leaving. Police in san jose say a it happened last night at 6 45. A witness told police the cyclist ran a red light, then slammed into the side of that car. The cyclist was wearing a helmet but he still suffered major head trauma. We do have a witness that was in the intersection at that time and according to them and what they saw the motorcyclist did run the red light. The two people in the car were not hurt and did cooperate with the police. They do not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in that crash. Oakland as rejected a deal to play at the Oakland Coliseum for the foreseeable future. The ten year lease proposal doesnt meet all of their requirements and the team cannot accept that offer. Its not clear what happens next in this ballpark battle. They have been pushing Major League Baseball for permission to move to san jose over the objections of the giants that consider the south bay their territory. If the meantime the oakland as have agreed to a series of short extensions at the Oakland Coliseum. The as share the coliseum with the Oakland Raiders and the raiders may be backtracking on their desire to stay. The raiders missed a monday deadline to submit a letter of interest in working on a project to transform the Oakland Coliseum complex into a sports and entertainment hub. There is no word on why mark davis declined to issue that letter. Meantime the warriors they are making plans to move out of oakland to a new home in San Francisco. Take a look. The new project unvailed this week calls for building an 18,000 seat arena near at t park. They dont have the stadium built yet. There are still many hurdles to go with that. One bay area Water District is offering an Unusual Program to help customers get through the drought. It created a large tap where people get reich led water to wallet can get recycled water to water their lawns. It can produce as much as 11 million gallons of recycled water every day. The district uses after ha much to water parks and city landscaping so the idea is now to make the extra recycled water available to the public. It can be used for a lot of purposes. Drinking, taking shower. The Water District board spent three hours last night talking about how to achieve water usage cut backs of 50 60 . They are considering a ban on washing cars and turning off city fountains. They may also limit how often people can water their home and business landscaping. Searchers looking for the missing Malaysian Airlines jet has recovered what they are calling an object of interest. They describe it as sheet metal with ribs and fiberglass coating. However, government commissioner now pulling down hopes saying the more they look at the object the less excited they are. Today an under water drone completed its tenth mission.
