This morning we are waking up with chilly temperatures and it is the sixth spare the air day. 31 degrees in fairfield. 25 in napa. 29 santa rosa and 34 in novato. So freezing and sub freezing again this morning. 31 in concord. Around the bay not as bad. 40degrees in oakland. Upper 30s in halfmoon bay. In addition to the Cool Temperatures im seeing a little bit of patchy fog out there and partly cloudy skies. And to the north we are seeing a little bit of patchy frost as well. Freezing conditions outside your door hells burg healdsburg. We do have changes in store over parts of the north bay for today. We actually have some mild weather shaping up as we get into the second half we will see temperatures in the 50s to low 60s. 59 degrees for hayward. 59 for fremont. 58 san mateo. 62 expected for you santa rosa. As we shift to the east we are looking at 68. Upper 60s in the forecast for some. Ly have a look at your weekend forecast in just a few moments. We are looking at a commute that is is not all that bad as we look at highway 101 in San Francisco. We also look at it from the maps and all of 101 as you can see and on 280 the traffic is looking good in San Francisco. Traffic times in the area on 280 just about three minutes. That is probably as good as it will get. 101 on the 280 interchange seven minutes. This is a look at 280 in san jose. Northbound traffic there is moving along pretty well. At 5 03 lets go back to the desk. Thank you. We begin with developing news from oakland. A family escaped an Early Morning fire that damaged three homes. Katie utehs is live with what made this especially difficult for firefighters. Katy good morning. Reporter good morning. We are near 90th avenue and a street. I will sew you the manufactured home behind me where this fire started. It presented a lot of challenges. The fire quickly jumped to the home to the right where you can see. Im told people were moving into that home so nobody was living there at the time of the fire this morning. And then if we move to the left there is also this duplex where you can see firefighters are going through it. The fire spread to that home but im told it was unoccupied. In just a short moment inside the home where the fire started. Let me show you the challenges where they face. Because of the way manufactured homes are built thin walls and many Flammable Materials they pose an extra hazard to firefighters. The floors also give out quickly. The family that lives in the home were able to make it out unharmed. Neighbors awoke to their screams for help and flames shoots into the night sky. They were really high. Everything started off really, really fast. By the time that the second firefighter came, it was from front to back. Reporter christina shared these photos with us. You can see exactly what we are talking about. Large flames. That is what firefighters found when they arrived around 2 30 this morning. The initial home and two surrounding homes on fire. It took them a half hour to get things under control and this morning they plan to be out here for another hour or so at least. Knocking down hot spots. Making sure the fire doesnt flair up. Within the last half hour firefighters tell us they are close to determining the cause of the fire. However, they doll want to talk with the homeowners one more time as they are working to narrow down the cause. It does appear to be accidental at this point. The fire started at about 5 30 last night on brooks avenue near ward road. No one was inside at the time but the owner of the home told the press democrat he had been trying to evict the tenants and says the electrical power and gas had been turned off. He thinks a burning candle may have started the fire but firefighters still investigating the cause. San rafael Elementary School is closed today after a van crashed into the building. The Fire Department posted this picture on twitter. The van hit the side of lover Elementary School around 5 45 last night. The crash ruptured a gas line and knocked out electricity. Two people in the van suffered minor injuries. The school expects all utility issues to be resolved over the weekend. Ktvu Paul Chambers is in our newsroom with more on the crackdown that begins today. Mothers against drunk drivers say during the Holiday Season between thanksgiving and new years the number of deadly dui accidents increase by 40 . That is why many agencies will kick off their holiday dui enforcement campaigns. We all need to be hyper vigilant. That was the case yesterday morning during this deadly accident with sis pecked drunk driver of livermore. Investigators say garcia failed a sobriety test and was arrested. He is now facing dui and vehicular manslaughter charges. They hope to curb this type of outcome. The crack down starts tonight in most areas and runs until new years day. Paul chambers ktvu channel 2 news. One person was killed when their car veered off the have road and hit a tree. It closed the connector ramp. That road reopened just about two hours later. The cause of the crash is still being investigated. Time is 5 08. Later today a vigil will be held in San Francisco to remember the victims of last years School Shooting massacre. Last night hundreds of people gathered at the National Cathedral in washington, d. C. To remember the victims of the sandy hook Elementary School shooting. Tomorrow marks one year since a gunman shot and killed 20 children on campus, along with six adults and turned the gun on himself. The vigil starts at 1 00 this afternoon at city hall. Brenda traveled with the group to represent california at the National Vigil for all victims of gun violence yesterday. The event was organized by the newtown foundation. Her son was shot and killed on new years eve back in 2010. Police say he might have been mistaken for somebody else. Three bay area cities are hosting gun buy back events tomorrow to mark the First Anniversary of the sandy hook Elementary School shooting. The events are being held in oakland, San Francisco, and san jose. 100 will be offered for handguns and 200 in exchange for assault weapons. The event in San Francisco runs from 8 00 a. M. To 3 00 p. M. At the alive and free omega boys club. In oakland the buy back will be held at youth uprising. That is from 9 00 a. M. To 2 00 p. M. And san jose people can turn in their guns at our Lady Guadalupe church. Governor jerry brown signed ten out of 17 bills in response to the sandy hook School Shooting. One of the new laws requires a Safety Certificate for gun buyers and a bill authored by state senator mark provides 24 million to help Law Enforcement track down people who are banned from owning guns. We know of nearly 20,000 such people in possession of 40,000 weapons so that is a good place to start. Three people are in custody this morning after a quadruple stabbing outside of last nights Denver Broncos game. It happened in denver about 30 minutes after the game ended. Three men were taken to the hospital. One remains in Critical Condition this morning. There was a fourth victim but that person left. This was a very chaotic scene. There is a lot of witnesses. Were going to have you know be interviewing witnesses throughout the night. No word at all on motivation. I dont know if this is gang related or what caused this. The broncos eventually lost to the San Diego Chargers 27 20. Happening today a hearing on the city of san jose lawsuit against major league baseball. Now one of the issues set to be discussed is the importance of a letter sent by the mlb Commissioners Office to the as in june. Authorities in marin county are still working to determine if a Bank Robbery Suspect shot by a sheriffs deputy is the so called cotton ball bandit. That person is responsible for several Marin County Bank robberies. The suspect is the latest robbery that was shot yesterday after Authorities Say he pointed a gun at deputies. Investigators served a search warrant at the suspects home yesterday collecting several bags of evidence. Today Sonoma County supervisor is expected to open a plea to charges he peeked inside a womans home. Both sides believe that he will say he is not guilty. Though he has publicly apologized for his behavior. Now its unclear if he wants the case to go to trial or if its a step that he hopes will lead to a plea bargain. Also today imprisoned former illinois governor Rob Blagojevich will try to get the corruption convictions against him dropped. An attorney for blagojevich will ask them to toss out the conviction or aleast the reduce the former governors 14 day sentence. He is currently serving his sentence at a prison in colorado. There is new problems with the healthcare. Gov website. Insurance Companies Say they are hearing from people who think they have signed up but there is no record. Insurance Companies Say the quality of the information they are receiving from the website is improving but they are still finding instances of misinformation. This comes after a rush from companies to meet a september 23rd deadline for people to sign up. They want poll siss that take effect on january 1st. 50,000 californiaons signed up for Health Coverage from the states new Health Exchange during the first week of december. That is three times the number of people that signed up during the first week of november. Some parents at a texas Elementary School are calling for a substitute teacher to be fired. He forced a fiveyearold student to tape his mouth shut. And if you are driving on 580 usually one of the first freeways to take it a little bit slow. We already have a little bit of slow traffic here as you drive through. As i move the map over to the altamont pass. And you can see it moves all the way over here to where 205 and 580 are. You can see there is stop and develop traffic right through here. So as you drive into the livermore area please give yourself a little extra time. You are probably used to it if you drive it every day. Nevertheless its there. Lets go to rosemary. Big changes coming your way. This cold spell finally coming to an end. By the end of the weekend, we will be five to ten degrees above the seasonal average. So we will go from being well below the seasonal average to well above. As we get into the second half of your weekend im thinking upper 60s to near 70 degrees for some of us. And this is something that will carry into monday. Just a little comparison for you as we started off monday boy, was it cold. We had freeze warnings and several days of advisories. A federal judge ruled that a war memorial in Southern California landmark violates the First Amendment and has to be taken down. The 43foot tall cross was built nearly 60 years ago. Lets go back to the desk. Back for developing news. A family escaped a big fire this morning that engulfed their home and two other homes. Firefighters say the fire prevented extra challenges this morning. Katie utehs is joining us from the scene to explain. Reporter i want to update you. We just spoke with firefighters and they have determined the cause of this fire is because the family was using their stove to warm the home. Unfortunately the house burned. The good news everybody made it out okay. Some of the extra challenges presented to firefighters. I will show you this is a manufactured home which is more dangerous for firefighters. The home to the right caught on fire. It is unoccupied. Although there were people in the process of moving in so some of their things were there. Then the home to the left that sun occupied as well. It also was damaged this morning. Now because of budget cuts, the second engine from station 20 just eight blocks away from our location was unable to respond this morning. However, around 30 firefighters did arrive. Minutes are precious. Especially because manufactured home fires spread quickly and i will show you exactly what firefighters were facing. About a half hour ago firefighters gave us this look inside the home where the fire started. Thin walls and many Flammable Materials they pose an extra hazard to firefighters. The floors also give out quickly. The good news the family that lives in the home were able to make it out unharmed. Over the commotion it woke neighbors around 2 30. I just woke up to a big noise a big ruckus outside. You just hear firefighters. Sot first house that caught on fire was a small house. And when it came outside, they just said that someone was yelling for help. But it was the woman. I also heard that someone was moving in and their things were there. I saw two other houses catching on fire. Reporter neighbors shared these pictures with us of flames shooting into the night sky. Firefighters arrived to a similar scene and it took them a half hour to get the flames under control. As we mentioned, firefighters say that this fire all started because the family who lived here was using their stove to warm the home. Of course i do see an uptake in these fires this time of year as we have the temperatures dipping really low. However, they want to caution people to be careful with space heaters and do not use your oven to warm the home. Katie utehs ktvu channel 2 news. Thank you. Time is 5 35. Oakland police are tracking carjackers that used the stolen cars to commit armed robberies. After a police chase yesterday, the suspects abandoned a toyota sedan. It was actually taken from its owner hours earlier. Patrol officers were on the lookout because in two previous carjackings this month the cars were then used in armed robberies in North Oakland and berkeley. People were either leaving their car or parking their vehicle. The suspects approached them. Multiple suspects approached them and produced a handgun and forcibly took the vehicle from them. We spoke with the cars owner who tells ktvu he was very relieverred his car was recovered so quickly since he uses it to give driving lessons. Oakland police say there are reasons to be optimistic when looking at crime statistics. Overall crime is about the same as last year. However there are 45 homicides. That is a decrease from last year. They call ate positive sign and a good start. The homicide drop will help win chances as he tries to beat out more than three applicants to become the permanent chief. There will be no classes after a van slammed into the building. Alex savidge is joining us from san rafael to show usth extent of this damage. Alex. Reporter an unexpected day off from school for students here at laurel dale elementary. Really it was the location of this crash that caused so many problems. The van that lost control last night took out this pg e service line that runs into the building right here in this area. Let me show you a photo of this accident scene that was tweeted out by the Fire Department. This crash was at 5 45 last night at this school. Two people inside that van suffered some minor injuries but the van ruptured a gas line and also triggered a power outage on the campus. That outage threatened to cancel a holiday concert that was planned at the school last night. But that event was moved to a nearby church at the last minute. This morning this is the message put up on the schools website letting parents and students know that classes are canceled for today. School administrators do expect that the gas and electrical issues will be fixed over the weekend and they are telling parents and students that monday will be a Normal School day after an unusual accident scene and a lot of repair work to do here. The negotiations are over a clause in the contract that allows Union Workers to receive up to six weeks of paid family leave. The unions ratified the deal and barts board of directors approved the contract but without that clause. Bart says it was a contract by mistake. We find that 52 of bay area voters think Public Transit workers should not be allowed to strike. 41 say they should have the right. A 60 day Court Ordered cooling off period ends a week from sunday. New and revamped roots are launching this sunday and the union says that violates the terms of the cooling off period. Staffs and parents at Oak Grove High School met last night to discuss an Armed Robbery at a bingo fundraiser for the school band on wednesday a man in a ski mask stole about 5,000 at a bingo game in the gym. Scott weiner says cars double parking is causing a problem. And the Fire Department has requested several Pedestrian Safety projects to be redesigned to make sure fire trucks can get through.
