San francisco firefighters responded to smoke coming from the wreckage of flight 214. Ktvu Claudine Wong is near the airport where crews are clearing the crash debris. Claudine what is going on . Reporter we just got word from the San Francisco airport that there was smoke coming from the wreckage as they tried to remove it. Lets show you what we can see from our advantage point. You can see the wreckage is still there. But a lot of heavy machinery in place. We also want to show you a video from an hour ago when we first arrived on scene and we could see a lot of fire trucks there that had their lights on. And they were all obviously focused on that scene. And again apparently there was smoke spotted coming from the wreckage. Firefighters put it out pretty quickly and they are back to business this morning. Now they did hold a press conference or News Conference last night to talk about getting this runway back open. This is where flight 214 slid along the runway. Were talking about 1,000 tons of asphalt. Were talking about Electrical Work and test flights. But they have had an average of about 100 cancellations a day since this happened. Since they had to keep this runway shut down one of four runways here at sfo. And the priority this morning is to get the wreckage off of this runway. Were facing delays and cancellations right now. Cancellations have been running about 120 a day. So getting the runway open is very important. Reporter but it will take a lot of work. So again they are working around the clock. Crews are very busy out here. If we can come back out here live to sfo and runway they should have daylight in a few short hours here. They are working quickly to get this done. We will keep an eye on this situation. Obviously removing a piece of wreckage like 214 will not been b an easy process. They are working into this morning. We are not sure when they hope to pick it up and haul it away. A carjacking suspect was taken to the hospital after leading Oakland Police on a short chase. It happened at 10 30 last night. The chase ended with a crash in the area of 82nd avenue. The car overturned in the middle of the street. The suspect got his sam pinned beneath the car and was taken to the hospital. Oakland police will be out in full force looking for a missing toddler. Officers plan to return to the apartment where 20monthold daphne webb lives and search along the shoreline in oakland. Family members are now getting help from the polly class foundation. The searches come after a cadaver dog picked up a scent at the familys home in a trash can and on the pillow case. People are looking at him like this bad guy. Like a criminal. Daphnes mother says her husband left ever their daughter in an suv with their grandmother because he wanted to buy an energy drink. He was in the store for about 15 minutes and did buy the energy drink. Daphnes father john webb is expected to be arraigned today on child endangerment charges. Police arrested webb yesterday for leaving the girl with her 87yearold grandmother who suffers from advanced dementia. Webb is not considered a suspect. He has been cooperative but he is being held on 100,000 bail. San jose Police Officers wont get the 10 raise they were asking for. An arbitrator decided they wont get anymore money. The Police Officers association stays officers deserve the raises after taking voluntary pay cuts two years ago when the city was having i dont know how many officers have to leave this department. I know we lost good officers that have resigned or retired. The city is offering a separate deal that includes a 2. 5 raise and a bonus for staying with the department. The union says that still wouldnt make san jose competitive with other agencies. A federal Civil Rights Agency is investigating allegations of Sexual Assault and harassment alto ghschool. They have opened an investigation into allegations that the school did not respond quickly enough to report a Sexual Assault victim is being harassed at school. A Parents Group has accused the School District of failing to in fact the claims in the article. Ferry riders could start paying to park at terminal next year. Today the Golden Gate Bridge district is expected to approve the plan to charge between 25 do park at the terminal for 24 hours. The district say there is are two benefits to having riders pay for parking. One it generates money and could encourage riders to find other ways to get to the terminal. That is not going to be met with much enthusiasm, sal, for the people who take the ferry because the ferry is not cheap. I know. More people have been taking the ferry since after the bart strike. They also want to know if the employees knew what was going on behind closed doors. A long fight over the abortion bill in texas is heading to the governors desk for his signature. The republican controlled Texas State Senate has scheduled a pivotal event this afternoon. Procedures could only be performed in Surgical Centers and abortions would be banned after 20 weeks. He is believed to be stuck at Moscow International airport for three weeks now. A russian official of Amnesty International did confirm he plans to meet with snowden shortly. Snowden has been trying to negotiate for political asylum in other countries. But Vice President joe biden and state Department Officials have contacted those leaders saying if they help snowden, it will hurt diplomatic relations. Several well known human rights organizations say they received email invitations to meet with snowden today but some question the authenticity of those e mails. We begin with developing news that we first reported at 4 30 this morning. Youre taking a look a live picture at sfo where crews are removing the wreckage. Very slowly. Very delicately as well of flight 214. Again that plane is slowly being towed away. That started roughly around 4 30 this morning. We want to go to pictures earlier we showed you. The fire trucks on the scene. We are hearing firefighters extinguished smoke that was coming from the few sal lodge there. Very Sensitive Information there. You want to try to keep that plane intact as much as you can. A congressional delegation led by nancy pelosi toured the site last might. These people here on the ground chairwoman for one and the mayor and others they had to deal with it minute by minute our First Responders. The lawmakers say if it wasnt for the work of First Responders the numbers of death and serious injuries would have been higher. The ntsb says it could take months before they reach a final conclusion of the crash. She says investigators have found no mechanical issues at this point. Engines, controls, and electronics were all working properly. Some in Congress Says the crash has provided a wakeup call. Coming up the new push in washington to close a legal loophole for foreign pilots. Oakland police will be out in full force once again today searching for a missing toddler. He is currently in jail on child endangerment charges. Hes not been named a suspect in the missing persons case. But we did speak with daphnes mother. Some people asked me how some im not angry at him . Im like that will not bring daphne back. Reporter she hopes additional photos will spark someones memory and result in her daughter being located safely. The girls father john webb reported her missing wednesday morning around 11 00 when he bought an energy drink in oakland. Police arrested webb yesterday on child endangerment charges. For leaving the 21monthold in an suv with his elderly mother. Someone took daphne while he was in the store. Daphnes mother got a call from police shortly after 11 00 wednesday. I screamed through the phone. Ran out of the door. I was hoping in the process in the two to three minutes it would have taken me to get to the Police Officers that maybe i didnt hear right. Because the phone call that i initially got woke me up out of my sleep. Reporter police have not named webb a suspect in the disappearance but they are searching both his home and park. We learned canine units picked up a scent at john webbs apartment. Police do say this is stylo missing persons case at this point. And daphnes mother holds out hope that her daughter is still alive. She said she is relying heavily on her faith. She also wants people to know daphne has a distinct right ear. Its slightly misshapen and cant be mistook. New this morning a man was rushed to the hospital after being shot. Now police say shortly before midnight two suspects approached the man near the intersection of pear street and persia avenue. He was robbed and shot in the arm. Police are looking for the suspects and anyone with information is asked to call police. A san jose sex crimes detective has been arrested for the same crime he investigates. Tony is charged with soliciting and receiving sexually explicit photos. He worked for the Sex Crimes Unit for three years and responsible for investigating sex Crimes Involving minors. Prosecutors say he knew the girl was under age when he requested the photos. Happening now parents in the south bay slept outside overnight and it was all for their kids. Santa clara county were fogged overnight to prevent the spread of west nile virus. The fogging covered a three square mile area in south san jose. Health officials ordered the fogging after several mosquitoes tested positive for west nile on friday. They say fogging is safe but people with respiratory conditions might be better off if they close doors and windows. When we apply them at the rates we do, there is very little chance at anyone having significant problem with products that we use. 16 cases of west nile virus have been reported in Santa Clara County since 2004 but no one in the county has died of the virus. Southbound 101 is moving along pretty well on the Golden Gate Bridge and the fog is not if as thick today. Well tell you more about the morning commute. Happy friday morning. The wreckage from flight 214 is being hauled away. We are being told the front section will be towed to an off site location. Sfo plans to reopen the runway on sunday. About two hours ago smoke also came from the fuse l lodge. Investigators say the driver 33yearold andrew was under the influence of drugs and had prescription painkillers and marijuana in his truck. Hopefully he will come to realize the gravity of what he took away from somebody elses family. Investigators say he was also living around a suspended license and just gotten off probation with the 2009dui. He could be charged with gross vehicular manslaughter. Jurors will begin deliberates on monday in a brutal gang rape case. They face life in prison if convicted of raping a 16year old girl outside of a richmond home coming dance in 2009. Two other men pleaded guilty in the attack and serving 32 and 27 year prison terms. Two more suspects are awaiting trial. Jury deliberations could start as early as today in the George Zimmerman trial. He is the former neighborhood watchman charged in the shooting death of trayvon martin. Moments ago the defense started presenting its closing arguments. Prosecution presented its closing arguments yesterday. Zimmerman is charged with Second Degree murder but also they ruled the jury could consider the lesser charge of manslaughter. I do not want this jury looking at this and feeling that laws suggest that sympathy should be considered. I ask you to come back with a verdict that speaks the truth. A verdict that is just. Now if convicted of Second Degree murder zimmerman could get life in prison. If convicted of manslaughter he could be sentenced to 30 years. U. S. Immigration authorities are putting mexicans caught illegally entering the us on flights back to their hometowns rather than just releasing them at the border. The idea is to discourage them from trying to cross into the u. S. Again. Its also a hope the program will cut down on crime in Mexican Border towns where the deported immigrants are often preyed on by criminals. Bay area congresswoman nancy pelosi and jackie spears says the crash of flight 214 is a wakeup call to change current aviation laws. U. S. Pilots be tested for alcohol and drugs following a crash. However, pilots with foreign licenses like the asiana crew are exempted. Lawmakers are examing which regulations must be addressed to change the policy. In the men time each in the meantime, each day more Crash Victims are being released from the hospital. Meantime three of the victims are listed in critical condition.
