There is a crash southbound 880. Its on the right hand side but it seems to be distracting drivers heading south. We are getting a new look at the devastation caused by the massive 7. 8 quake in nepal. Some of them are still standing. Thousands of people are living outside. They are in tents. They are under the debris and rubble. That is because they have no place to go. With all the aftershocks they are afriday to go back inside. In the meantime the biggest challenge is for crews trying to rescue people still trapped in villages. The police are cig more than 3700 people are then to is survive. Doctors without borders are sending eight teams to nepal. They will be running a mobile clinic. So far 18 of the People Killed in the quake they died on an avalanche on mt. Everest. The avalanche as it swept through the base camp. He and another climber heading for a tent to create a pocket of air. Three americans were among those killed in the avalanche and ktvu fox 2 reporter janine de la vega is in Mountain View with more on the google executive who lost his life in that janine. Reporter Dan Fredinburg worked as the head executive for google x but his friends say he was so much more. They described him as an adventurer who had a passion for the outdoors and love for the planet. I have an oxygen deprivation mask which is not the best tool for training for high altitudes. Reporter you can see the 33 yearold showing how he is getting ready for the conditions and has climated Mount Everest. He had been documenting his trip on social media. Posting pictures of his trek. He was an experienced climber who experienced a this was his third attempt. But over the weekend his sister shared the sad thinks on his instagram account. Saying fredinburg died during the avalanche. He was raising money for a pair of nepalese or fa thans. His friends set up an account to continue that effort. Those that love dan call him an incredible brother, a brilliant engineer, and explorer who wanted to make the earth a better place. His exgirlfriend and chicago pd actress sofia bush called him one of the greatest loves of her life. We have not heard any plans for his memorial. Google has said it will donate 1 million to the rescue response in nepal and no doubt it will be a tough day for his friends and coworkers that knew fredinburg. Thank you janine. Two bay area men climbing Mount Everest survived that avalanche. Scott holder of santa rosa and john raider of kenwood barely escaped being caught in that avalanche. They told the paper they felt several avalanches chicking the worlds tall shaking the worlds tallest mountain there. Photographer talking about his experience in nepal when the earthquake struck. They show a town near the base of Mount Everest before the quake there. He was there with the colorado couple who are about to get married on Mount Everest. Churchill described the moment the quake struck as terrifying. Everyone rushed out screaming. People were screaming in the village here. People were jumping out of windows. People in bath towels because they just got out of the shower. People in underwear. This is a photograph of people seeking safety outdoors after the quake. He says everyone in his group is safe. Supreme court this week. Tomorrow the justices will hear arrangements on cases from kentucky, michigan, ohio, and tennessee. Those states had gay marriage bans upheld by a federal afeels court back in november. The high court will consider two issues related to same sex marriage. First do states have a right to define marriage sellly as a union of a man and woman. If so do the states have to recognize valid same sex marriages from other states . The union of a man and woman is the corner stone of society. Im confident that these people will see what the majority of americans have come to see. Which is that when we end discrimination, when we end exclusion, families are helped and no one is hurt. The number of states where same sex marriage is legal has grown rapidly over the last few years. 36 states including california and the district of columbia passed laws allowing it. The Supreme Court is expected to issue its ruling by the end of june. Tonight in Mountain View supporters of same sex marriage will hold a vigil at the city hall on the eve of the Supreme Court hearing. That vigil scheduled to begin at 6 00 p. M. Hundreds of california muslims heading to the capitol its the Fourth Annual muslim day at the capitol. They all ask for support for bills to deal with equal pay for women and freeze on tuition and state colleges and universities. Lake tahoe hit its natural april leaving just a trickling of water flowing into the truckee river. A teenager is in custody after a nineyearold boy was stabbed to death in Discovery Bay. A young man is under arrest in connection to the stabbing death of a nineyearold child in Discovery Bay. 18yearold William Schultz was taken into custody yesterday at the Kaiser Medical Center in antioch. Investigators still trying to establish a motive for the stabbing. It happened sunday on the home of the victim identified as jordan. Investigators say schultz is the only suspect. We do know that the suspect is a friend of the family. This wasnt a random act. This wasnt some sort of you know stranger that came into the home and murdered a child. Deputies say they found schultz at kaiser after a nurse saw social media posts with his photo. The nurse called authorities after realizing schultz was being treated in the er for an undisclosed reason. Hillary clinton will make a Campaign Fund raising swing through bay area next week. The golden gate transportation district have allowed for districts to charge a drone operator for trespassing. Even on the 880 ramps getting into the main part of the toll plaza and through those metering lights. Lets move along and take a look at the commute on the san mateo bridge. That is moderately heavy over to the peninsula. A little bit of slow traffic there but nothing much on 101. If you are driving on 880 we had a couple minor accidents at hayward. They were pulled to the shoulder but traffic is backed up to 238. It does get better into union city and fremont. 6 31 lets go back to the desk. At 6 31 Emergency Response teams heading to nepal after this weekends massive earthquake. They are causing traffic problems. Officials say the relief flights are causing major congestion and delays out there on the tarmac. Four india flights carrying supplies had to go back to new delhi, india. Almost 100 aftershocks have made the Recovery Efforts too dangerous. California is sending 57 search and rescue experts to that area. The bay area is home to several thousand nepalese people and many of them still have family and friends in nepal. Those with loved ones in nepal they have been facing a lot of uncertainty since that massive earthquake trying to figure out almost the people they care about most are okay. And of course prayer has become that much more important to the local nepalese community. We caught up last night with pondi and his family. They have been glued to the computer over the past couple of days searching for any news they could find about the disaster and waiting for word from family and friends. They tell us that facebook really has been key because it gives users the option of checking in as safe following a disaster and pandi told us most of his loved ones did survive the quake. The bay area home to 7,000 nepalese people and of course its a difficult time for many of them including the owner of the tandor restaurant who tells us his new wife anita is in nepal. She is waiting for papers. She survived the earthquake but her husband remains worried. I feel really bad because im supposed to be with her. I saw on the facebook all the pictures posted from my friend and the news. I feel really bad. Reporter and yesterday this was the scene in San Francisco. Nepalese immigrants came together for a fund raising vigil outside the ferry building. They urged people to give to help their home country during this tough time. Donations as you can see they trickled in throughout the day but more importantly organizers say they helped to raise quite a bit of awareness out there with that event and they have set up a go fund me page with the slogan skip a lunch, help a bunch. They know the bay area is a very Generous Community that can make a huge difference following this disaster in nepal. Students and staff are notified simply yesterday through email and Text Messages about the sudden closure of corinthian colleges. Go ahead and take a look. Obviously upset students showing the frustration this morning. Some saying where did our money go . Others say heal colleges. Others say you lied to us. Now thousands are wondering what is next for their future. Corinthian colleges made the announcement yesterday that they are closing the remainder. Corinthian operates colleges [ inaudible ] but this announcement by corinthian comes two weeks after it was fined 30 million for misleading the public on job placement rate. And despite having trouble selling off heald college, they told students they spoke with that their education would continue. We were told concord campus snot going to close. I spoke to the president of academics and he told me there is nothing to worry about. Reporter one of the students we spoke with said she was just a few months away from getting her nursing degree. The main question is what is next . For the students they could have loan discarjacks. We are also hearing the schools are working with other schools so students could continue their education. But the fear for the student standpoint is starting their education all over again. In the meantime the ceo corinthian released a statement. We believe we have attempted to do everything in our power to provide a quality education and opportunity for a Better Future for our students. Police arrested a soccer coach at Napa High School for reportedly sexting a 16year old student. Investigators say 29yearold Julian Vargas propositioned the girl for sex and texted an obscene picture of her. She believes other girls were harassed by vargas. And police are asking other victims to come forward. Vargas was arrested yesterday at his home in st. Helena. A Good Samaritan helping to put out an east bay Apartment Fire had to be saved himself by First Responders after he collapsed. This happened yesterday afternoon about 4 00 on kirkwood drive in concord. Contra costa fire Officials Say the man tried to put out a fire in a neighbors kitchen and he used five different fire extinguishers he found by running around the apartment complex. He collapsed just as First Responders got there and the officers and firefighters used a defibrillator to restart his heart. That man is in the hospital listed in stable condition. Finding a parking spot in San Francisco can be challenging as most of us know. But the city is hoping to change that. According to the chronicle there are concerns about the citys permit program. Now the program was created back in the 1970s. People get permits they can park in certain areas near their homes without worrying about being ticketed or towed. The idea is to keep neighborhoods from turning into parking lots. Some say the program has created conflict and inconvenience for visitors. The agency plans to take a closer look at the program. Those recommendations are expected to be presented this fall. So far seven of San Franciscos 11 supervisors have accepted the challenge to ride muni for 22 days. It is a dare put forth by the Transit Riders Union to try to get city leaders to understand problems with public from the challenge does not start until june but some are already getting a head start. The Boston Marathon bombers life son the line today. His defense lawyers began argue in the penalty phase of his trial. 21yearold Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was convicted of 30 federal charges in that 2013 bombing at the Boston Marathon finish line. 17 of those charges carry the possibility of the Death Penalty.
