Background they are still putting water on this aban conned warehouse. This is right near downtown san jose. Coming up in two minutes janine de la vega will have a live update on how the forecasts think this could have started. Pretty interesting series out there this morning. Its wednesday, january 14th im pam cook. Good morning, im dave clark. Lets talk about weather and traffic. Steve paulson is working hard getting all the details for you. There is a lot of fog out to the valley and the east. It will be sunny and really nice i think for most of the bay and the coast. There is still a little hint of an east breeze. That is bringing the valley fog back in. Parts of eastern solano and parts of contra costa county. And then it will burn off. It will be sunny here and looks really nice by the coast. That is the fog which is working its way back over from the delta and San Pablo Bay. 30s for many here. A lot more 30s. Wood side is at 35. Menlo park, palo alto. 39 san mateo and foster city. These are all running cooler than yesterday. High pressure is just says nope im until charge and nothing is coming in here any time soon. Sunny and mild. Patchy thick fog though. 60s for highs. Unless you are stuck in the fog then you can see upper 50s for some. Here is sal with an update. Still on the south bay . Yeah we have been looking at that. And weve been looking at the east bay. We are trying to cover the whole thing. As you know and steve knows because he listens to what i say. The commute start is really getting thick. Here we are at 6 02 and you can see it for yourself. A little bit more traffic. More traffic but not a lot of stop and go traffic on the east shore freeway. Bay bridge toll plaza as you come up to the pay gates its about a 2025 minute delay before you actually get across into San Francisco. Not too bad but definitely there is some waiting time here to be done. 580 we had an earlier accident in pleasanton that is gone. But 580 is pretty slow out of the livermore area on the way to pleasanton. A little bit of slowing. 238 at 880 as you get to hayward Castro Valley area. Mere we are in the south bay. Northbound 101. That fire where janine has been covering in san jose has not caused any major problems on highway 87 through the area. 6 03 lets go back to the desk. Back to our developing news weve been following all morning. Janine de la vega is live at the site of a big warehouse fire and janine, some tense moments out there. Sounds like its better out there though. Yeah it was. One of the firefighters was telling me that he was walking near this abandoned building where the three alarm fire was happening. And a transformer exploded and he jumped just because of the force of the sound in the buildings. Firefighters at this point they are putting out hot spots in this building. This is an Industrial Area of san jose. You can still see a little bit of smoke rising there. We dont know what was inside that building burning because it had been abandoned. We also dont know if there were people inside. We are being told that Homeless People could have been inside. This fire broke out just before 4 00 a. M. On bass set street. Flames were shooting out of the roof and a power pole were on fire when fire engines started arriving. A transformer as i mentioned exploded. That caused some high tension power lines to start sagging and the roof to collapse. Firefighters never entered this building because it was just too dangerous. They have been fighting this from the outside using aerial ladders. After about an hour they were finally able to knock it down. The fire captain says it is possible that there were Homeless People squatting inside the building because id hat been abandoned for 20 years. Whole area is fenced off. And inexcessable and locked off. To get in there you have to climb the fence. If there was anybody inside, i hope they got out. The electricity has been shut off and pg e also shut off the gas. There was a fear of power lines coming down. Even if they do come down, there is not going o be a hazard at this point because again everything has been shut off. As far as the cause, its still too early. A fire investigator will come out later. Fire captain told me there were two people seen running from the building and that combined with the fact that they saw a roll up door of the warehouse. It was up slightly and they think Homeless People may have been inside. Possibly a cook fire. They just dont know. Its also a possibility that they might send in some dogs a little bit later to see if they can find anything. Again its really unknown if the abandoned building was truly vacant or not. Back to you. Thank you. The San Jose Fire Department is issuing a warning. It happened on sunday in the Communications Hill area. Only accessible by foot or four wheel drive. Take a look. The Fire Department gave us this photo of a crude trap at an abandoned homeless camp. I dont recall this being identified. That is why we put this information out there. Basically as a safety alert. If we see more of these, then now we have an issue. We spoke with a homeless advocate who suspects the trap was made by a homeless veteran. Muni says it has no choice and allow controversial bus billboards that compare islam to nazi germany. The adds went up over the weekend and shows a muslim leader. The San FranciscoMunicipal Transportation Agency says it could be sued if it doesnt allow the billboards. There is a new orderrish eyed by a state Administrative Law judge telling pg e to turn over 65,000 i mills to the city of san bruno by the end of this month. The emails may show further evidence of a cozy relationship between pg e and some of the regulators at the puc as they were dealing with the san bruno pipeline explosion. Federal investigators relaxed site and pg e poor recordkeeping were factors in that explosion. Pg e agreed to turn over e mails but only to the puc. Not to the city of san bruno. Reporter dave a fire captain told me that there are Homeless People who park here along this street and they say that as the fire the flames were going up in the air, that they saw two people running away from this abandoned billing. The scene is a lot calmer because the fire is out. A lot of firefighters standing around here. This fire started just before 4 00 a. M. In this commercial building on bassett street. This is in downtown san jose. The fire was fully involved. Flames were shooting from the roof and a power pole was on fire. Firefighters tell us a transformer exploded. That caused some power lines to start sagging. They immediately went into defensive mode attacking this from the outside. It was too dangerous to enter. It took about an hour and ten minutes for the firefighters to knock down this fire. Captain told us this building has been vacant for ten years. So at this point what we will do is extinguish it and then what we will do is bring in search dogs down the road to insure there is nobody potentially fire victims. There was concern that power lines may come down but the electricity has been shut off. So has the gas. So even if they come down, it is not going to be a hazardous situation. The cause is still unknown because it is still early on. They are waiting for daylight to come so they can take a look at what the scene looks like. Right now they are not letting the firefighters go in right now. So this story is far from over. Yes and fire investigators should be out later this morning. They cant do much because its still so dark. All right janine we will talk to you later. Thank you. Here at the britain avenue onramp to highway 101. Businesses in this particular area have seen a spike in robberies in recent years. That is why they chose this area. On monday night the City Council Gave the green light for the plate readers that correct information and store it for up to a year. Police say that data can be invaluable when they are investigating crimes and also searching for missing people. Critics though worry about privacy and the potential surveillance of innocent people. But the San Carlos Police chief says the information will not be misused. Its stored at a secure location. That would be the Northern California regional and intelligence center. Now one city Council Member opposed the technology during this weeks vote. He warned about san carlos heading down a slippery slope of surveillance and suggested that businesses worried about crime simply install security cameras. Imparticular he was speaking about businesses in this area where they will be putting the fixed location license plate reader here. So what the city will be doing is doing a sixmonth test period and then they will reevaluate after the six months and see if the program is working the way they thought it would. After that everything is High Pressure and dry conditions. January rainfall for San Francisco only average january our wettest month. So far zero. 2013 not even a half an inch of rain. The trend has gone dry, dry, dry. If we go zero we have to bank big time on february and march. That is a tall order. The east bay fog is a big issue. Couple days ago was north bay and east bay. Some of that fog is coming back into the valley. Would not be surprised even livermore has an easterly breeze. Maybe that will creep in there as well. Right over San Pablo Bay and the delta. Its colder this morning. If you are stuck in the fog, it will be a tough day to get over 58 or 59 degrees. Napa is 37. That was not the case yesterday.
