Otherwise it will be sunny to mostly sunny today. Cooler on the lows. Napa is down to 32. It is close for san jose. Yet because of some of that halfmoon bay. Cool for some. Cold for others. But occasionally higher clouds really the kind of fog on the coast is the bigger story here today compared to the last couple of days. Over all mostly sunny today and clouds increase tomorrow. Giving us some drizzle. Light rain. Patchy fog again closer to the beaches. 50s on some of these temps. Or low 60s to a few mid 60s. Here is sal. Steve, we have a crash in san jose northbound 101 at mckey in the left lane. You can see the medics arrived a little while ago. Traffic is at a standstill coming up to this area. As i put the map up, there is the crash. There is only there is not a lot going on. Its really just the crash that you see there. And now you have the wrong icon here. Lets get rid of that. The crash is going to be blocking the lanes and that is where the crash the slow traffic is. There is a lot of room for you to use 85 and 280 as alternate routes at this time. Probably a great idea. Because you will get by much faster. Lets move along to live pictures. Another live picture. That is the bay bridge toll plaza. The traffic here is light. Lets go back to the desk. Health officials strongly urging people to get a flu vaccine with nine deaths reported in the bay area from the h1n1 virus. Yesterday alone we learned of four more deadly cases of h1n1 in Sonoma County, san mateo, San Francisco, and santa clara counties as well. The youngest victim a 23year old man in se know Sonoma County who was healthy before coming down with the flu. Santa rosa Memorial Hospital more than a dozen people are showing up every shift with flu symptoms. Doctors tell us they really dont know why it hit harder than others. Its fever, chills. Really shaking type chills. Uncontrol blue shaking and then youve got body aches. There was another outbreak of the h1n1 flu virus back in 2009. And that virus imparticular can effect otherwise healthy, young and middleaged people not considered high risk. We are following breaking news from san jose. Three suspicious fires this morning all reported within an hour of each other and in the same neighborhood. These fires this morning they are part of a string of suspicious fires in san jose over the past three days. Between about 2 00 and 5 00 in the morning. Most of these events have occurred. We showed you this on mornings on 2 and in the morning news. Historic house on south 17th street was badly damaged. The two people who lived there escaped safely. Meantime police in santa roe sal investigating a possible in santa rosa investigating a possible homicide. Ktvu alex savidge is there with the very latest on what we know about this victim. Reporter good morning. Police say this was a 19year old young man who was shot in the head. At this point they dont know what the motive was. A 911 call came in at 8 45 last night from this home across the street. And then officers arrived hear and found the victim in the front room of the home last night. Crime scene technicians are still out here right now. They have been watching them walk in and out of this home. Investigators treating this as the homicide. This house is on the 1200 block on marble court. The victim was a known gang member but they are trying to figure out if it was his affiliation that was related to this homicide. Detectives interviewed two teenagers who were here at the home and possible witnesses and they have since been released. We also did last night see animal control officers out here. They took away at least two dogs from the place. Now police say this home has seen its share of problems. Officers have responded here to the home recently a number of times for disturbances. As we bring you back out to a live picture. This is still a very active crime scene. They are still here collecting evidence and still searching for the killer in this place. We are told by police this will be santa rosas third homicide. Live in Santa Rosa Alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. Oakland high school increasing their security after a student was shot and wounded yesterday morning near the campus. The principal Continuation High School will meet with police today after an 18yearold student was shot at a bus stop near the school on fontaine street. That student was ache to make it back to the school to get help and later rushed to the hospital. Police blocked down the campus as they searched for thes is peck. So far no arrests have been made. Its also making a lot of students as you can imagine very nervous. I cant believe its not on our campus. So its hard for me to wonder. The principal at the school wants more police to be scene on the campus. New this morning a crash near the port of oakland killed the driver and injured a passenger. It happened at 1 30 this morning near seventh and meritime streets. The reason the driver lost control is being investigated. Firefighters say lint in a drier may have sparked a fire that damaged a town home. A neighbor captured this cell phone video of the huge flames. Its scary. Its about five houses down. And to think it started from a drier machine and possibly the lint it is so scary. Three people were inside the home where the fire started but were not hurt. Also this morning lawyers for 16yearold boy accused of setting another teenager on fire on an oakland bus will ask the judge to send the case to juvenile court. Police say Richard Thomas set Sasha Fleischman on fire november 4th while fleischman was sleeping on an ac transit bus. Thomas told police he did it because he is homophobic. Thomas has been charged as an adult in the case. The press democrat reports it is still unclear when the report on the shoot willing be handed over to the District Attorneys Office for review. The District Attorney is deciding whether or not to file charges in the october shooting that killed 13yearold andy lopez. Deputy eric says will opened fire because says he opened fire because the gun he was holding looked like a real assault rifle. Pedestrian deaths in San Francisco continue to rise and the police are saying a decline in Police Staffing may be a factor. Last year 21 pedestrians died in San Francisco. Compared to 16 in 2009. Police say drivers have been getting away with speeding because there are not enough officers around to pass out Traffic Violations. As the Police Department increases its staffing own the next five years, the police say a number of pedestrian deaths should also go down. Two suspects have now been arrested for a string of Bank Robberies in the south bay. Four banks were robbed in san jose, milpitas, and campbell. Oscar was arrested by us marshalls after he allegedly fled to indiana. Pg e is worrying customers about an email scam. The utility says the email asks for customers credit card or Checking Account numbers. Pg e says it would never ask for that kind of information unless a customer had logged on to the my energy page or called the utility anyone who has received one of the emails is encouraged to contact pg e. There is a new development in the target data breach. Within the last 30 minutes target officials said more customers could be effected than originally believed and more information compromised. In a press release this morning, the retailer announced its investigation determined more information was stolen besides credit card data. The names, mailing addresses, phone numbers, or email addresses could be effected. Target will alert some customers by email. Target says its shoppers will have zero liability for the cost of any fraudulent charges. Meantime target has hundreds of jobs to fill at its new store in south san jose. The store is scheduled to open in march at the village Oak Shopping Center and want to hire 300 people. The store is holding job fairs to fill the open positions. They were on a Surveillance Mission over the eastern part of the country when the plane crashed. Authorities say there are no indications it was brought down by enemy fire but this crash comes a day after nato confirmed a black hawk Helicopter Crash in december was the result of enemy fire. Rescuers called off their search yesterday for 39year old lieutenant Shawn Christopher snyder. Family and friends are rememberingth other native killed in the crash. Brian collins from truckee, california. One of the things brian did was make this decision to go into the military which was a selfless act. He knew he was taking a risk. He knew that his life might be in danger but he said to me, jim, that is what i want to do. Collin served in the navy for more than two years. The other sailor is 29yearold lieutenant wesley of greensboro, north carolina. Of the two survivors one was released from the hospital yesterday. The other could be released as soon as today. Were also getting video of a coast guard rescue near hurst castle on the Central California coast. The coast guard was called out after 9 00 yesterday morning after a sailboat ran aground. A helicopter rescued one man from the boat. He was not hurt. Time is 6 16. Happening today the Defense Department report comes out today. It finds that students at the three u. S. Military academies often believe they have to put up with sexest and offensive behavior. The goal is to reduce Sexual Harassment and assault. The report points to scandals involving sports teams at the army, navy, and air force academies in the last school year. Its urging leaders to do more to improve training and prevention programs. Last night an employee at an oreilly auto sports store was shot and killed. The suspect went into the store, ordered the stores three workers to get down on the ground. One of the workers stabbed the suspect who then shot and killed him. There were two shoppers in the store at the time. They were not hurt. The suspect was seen running away later. After going down for six years, californias prison population is expected to grow by 10,000 inmates over the next five years. That is according to the l. A. Times. This new projection will complicate governor browns efforts to obey a court order to reduce over crowding. The reason for the rise that is being debated. Others cite crimes committed by felons or parolees that cycle in and out of the over crowded jails. New mortgage rules take effect today aimed at reducing the risk of default and foreclosures. Lenders must now determine that a borrower can realistically afford a mortgage longterm. Lenders also cannot offer risky features such as terms longer than 30 years or interest only payment payments 37 but the new rules do not require a minimum down payment. I would still say 85 is a pretty decent alternate route for you to avoid any of this or 87. You can use that and you can just avoid 101 for now. 101 slows right at about the capitol expressway. We have report of a new crash in oakland at the mccar they are maze. It was a reportover a poke accident an the motorcycle is reported on fire. Weve been looking around we dont see anything. And hopefully just not there. Moving along and taking a look at the commute westbound bay bridge is light. The alert weve been telling you about in san jose is still there. Theyve managed to open up one lane but still northbound 101 this crash has been there now for quite a long time. Its been there for 40 minutes and traffic is backing up all the way down to the capital express way. Avoid 101 in san jose. Use alternates like 87, 280 or 85. Three suspicious fires this morning. All within an hour of each other. And all in the same neighborhood. Ktvu janine de la vega is live in san jose. Look at the map there. Janine will tell us why firefighters say there may be a connection to these fires over the past couple of days. Good morning. Reporter good morning, dave. This is very upsetting for the people who live at this house on 28th street. Just take a look at some of the damage that was caused this morning by that fire. You can see how the side of the house is just blackened because it burned. Now the woman inside says they were all sleeping when a man in a car got out of his car. This began all in an hour of each other. Now the fire began around 3 30 this morning. They all started on the outside of the structure. At this house on 28th street the residents say they found an oil can in the bush that wasnt there. Before fight fears arrived to that fire before firefighters arrived to that fire. The damage was min minimal but they called in firefighter arson investigators. Many are exterior fires that extended into the fires and threatening peoples homes. We have arson investigators and san jose pd working together to collect as much evidence as we can and develop develop a strategy to find the suspects, identify them and bring them to justice. Reporter yesterday firefighters responded to three fires in the same downtown neighborhood. That included a fire that started on the outside of a home on 17th and san antonio street and caused major damage. There was also that huge five alarm fire that started in a warehouse close by. That is just six blocks away from where we are right now. There is still not a cause for either of those fires and fire officials are not sure if that warehouse fire is connected but again all these fires started between 2 00 to 5 00 a. M. In the morning. At least the houses that are all residential they are all starting on the exterior of the home. Again a lot of red flags here. They are working with the san jose Police Department. We have seen patrol cars around the neighborhood. They are trying to piece this all together. Reporting live federal san jose janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. With the number of flu cases rising in the bay area and even some flu deaths, there is a big push to encourage people to get their flu shots. At uc berkeley they are trying to stop the spread of the flu as students return to campus. The goal is to encourage all students to get vaccinated. When people come back, they bring their germs with them. So students will be arriving from flu from the northeast where it has been cold and dry. And they will join a congregate housing setting where they will be hugging and shaking hands and sharing cups and germs. The flu vaccine does cover the h1n1 strain. It takes about two weeks for the vaccine to become effective though. So peak activity for the flu early february. As the number of people getting vaccinated continues to grow, we wondered if there could be a vaccine shortage locally. And we called more than two dozen pharmacies just to see how they are doing. Two cvs stores say they did run out of shots. Both located near the retirement community. However, the federal government says there are enough vaccines to go around. There is a shortage of a popular flu treatment for children. The manufacture of liquid tamiflu says they may be unable to fill orders. Tamiflu is typically prescribed for children under at age of 13. It can be given to anyone older than two weeks old. A new development over the target security breach. This morning target announced almost twice as many shoppers may be effected by it. Although they say this is not considered a new breach. Target Officials Say the stolen information includes the names, addresses, phone numbers, ene mail addresses up to 70 million target customers. Target ceo says this i know it is frustrating for our guests to learn that this information was taken and we are sorry they have to endure this. Our guests expect more from us and deserve better. Target initially reported in mid december that 40 Million People who used credit or debt cards at their stores had their information compromised. The information swiped from its system included customers names, credit card numbers, expiration dates and verification codes. Target officials will be reaching out to customers via e mail this week. They will have zero liability for fraudulent charges. And they are offering one year of free credit monitoring to everyone who shopped in their u. S. Stores. During the attack on new years, he was wearing a gray hooded parka. The victim says he smelled like cigarettes. The 19yearold woman told investigators the suspect grabbed her as she was walking on 17th street near jackson. Not far from lake merit. He also had a gun. As he was dragging her, she fell to the ground and was able to escape. 5,000 reward is become offered in this is being offered in this case. The u. S. Labor Department Released the latest jobs report and it is disappointing. They added just 74,000 jobs last month. Economists are saying that is because people have stopped looking for work. Santa rosa police are searching for the person who opened fire on a 19yearold young man. They are trying to figure out why this happened. The shooting was inside of a home that is right across the street from us. You can see it is still an active crime scene. One inside this house called up 911 to report the shooting. California governor jerry brown calls his budget plan a very important step forward for the state. For this year there is a very good news. Good news in the fiscal stability and Resources Available for the state of california. Despite the small surplus for the year, the governor is warning california is not out of the woods. He says the state must watch its spending or fall deeper in debt. Heres a look inside the governors spending plan. He wants to put 10 billion into the schools. 11billion would go help to pay down an estimated 25 billion in debts for the past ten years. 118million would go toward over due maintenance at parks, schools, roads, and other facilities. And the governor includes 1. 6 billion Rainy Day Fund for future economic problems. The Budget Surplus will also play a major role in the governors plan against earthquakes. There is a good possibility that some place in this state will be hit with an earthquake as big as the one in 1989. That is why he is calling for sharp increase in funding for a program to map high risk faults throughout california. Hes asking for 1. 5 million in new money to map faults for the next fiscal year.
