Lets go back to the desk. Were starting with developing news. Firefighters still at the scene of a fast moving fire this morning. It damaged two homes in west oakland. This started about 3 30 this morning on 24th street near market. This is not far from interstate 980. Those flames caused major damage to two victorian homes. The firefighters say everyone inside got out safely. Investigators say the fire started in the laundry room. It may have been caused by an electrical problem. We talked to one neighbor who rushed to help the People Living in those two burning houses. I heard explosions. Sounded like gunshots to me but as soon as i heard that, i heard a lady screaming help, call 911. So i got on the phone. I ran outside. She said help, im locked inside. I cant do anything so while im on the phone with 911, im taking her door down with my friend whose house is totally burning. The red cross is giving shelter to about a dozen people forced out of their homes. Alex satisfy raj has been out there since 4 30 this morning. Right now hes talking to investigators. Jeanine de la vega is at the crash scene where police say there have been a number of reported car burglaries in the area and theyre now canvassing for more victim. Jeanine . Reporter yes, were here on coleman near meridian where you can see the chevy suburban behind me that is crashed. Police told us it is stolen. Thats why theyre investigating out here because its linked to burglaries that occurred in the neighborhood possibly close by. You can see they do have the eastbound lanes here closed. There are police cars here so that they can investigate. Police found the chevy suburban already crashed in the eastbound lanes of coleman at 4 00 this morning. It matched the description of a vehicle that a car burglar was driving. Police believe the man inside who was taken away to the hospital is the suspect. They had received 911 call from several residents in a neighborhood close by hours earlier. There were two suspicious vehicles and suspects that were trying to break into cars. Weve had a rash of vehicle burglars out here and what happens, a lot of people what theyre trying to do is trying to unlock vehicles, trying a bunch of doors and seeing which ones are unlocked and theyll burglarize those vehicles. Reporter thats whats happening this morning . Yes. Reporter police say because they have been able to determine that the chevy suburban that crashed is stolen, they will arrest the driver who they say is in his 20s. Again he is at the hospital. Unsure how severe his injuries are. Now, officers are out in neighborhoods close by trying to determine if there are any other victims, if there was any other cars that were stolen, how much was taken. If we find out more, well let you know. New this morning, a Hayward Police officer is recovering after being jurmd in a chase. Police say several officers injured in a chase. Police say several officers noticed a suspicious vehicle at 1 00 this morning that turned out to be stolen. The driver refused to stop and rammed into a police car before leading officers on a chase from industrial to mission boulevards to groom street. Two suspects took off running but were taken into custody a short time later. One air suffered a minor injury in a scuffle with the suspect. Time 6 06. The chp searching now for the person responsible for a hit andrun crash in san jose earlier this morning. Now, it had a domino effect. It resulted in north bound 880 being shut down for a while. Luckily the chp says it sounded a lot worse than it was. All people received only minor injuries and were taken to valley regional and medical regional. Only one lane was open for an hour and a half. So the backup wasnt too bad given the hour. Now officers are looking for the man who ran off. His car appears to be newly bought. There arent any license plates on the car. We know that authorities have a cell phone. They have interviewed Crash Victims at the hospital so they believe its only a matter of time before they catch him. You can see this car behind me, this volvo, it was just bought yesterday. The victim said she had just bought it and was driving it when the crash happened. A very unfortunate set of circumstances. Also this morning, we are learning that the gunman who opened fire at a washington, d. C. Navy yard was being treated for mental illness. Reporter investigators say its going to be some time before they piece together a motive but we are learning more about his background and it is shedding some light on why he may have acted the way he d. Law enforcement sources reports that 34yearold aaron alexis was being treated for a host of Mental Illnesses that included hearing voices, paranoia and even a sleep disorder, that he was being treated by the v. A. Since august. Sources also tell the ap he was a Buddhist Monk who had fits of rage. He also complained about the navy and felt he was being discriminated against. We are learning he was a former Navy Reservist who was also discharged after misconduct. He was killed along with 12 other people during yesterdays shooting at the historic Washington Navy yard. The f. B. I. Says he was working as an i. T. Contractor, was able to hold a security clearance and he also had a valid pass which allowed him entry into the building. Aaron was a very polite, very friendly man. I got to know him two years ago when he first started helping out as the restaurant. And he just had an excitement for life, just getting involved with the thai community, with the buddhist temple down the road. That was a friend of aaron alexis there. Investigators are still searching for a motive for the shooting. The fbi is treating it as a criminal investigation, not annual act of terrorism. Eight other people were injured, including a d. C. The bart management is expected to respond to the unions latest offer. Last night Union Leaders came out of this meeting in oakland to describe what they call a comprehensive counterproposal. The unions say bart workers are willing to make major concessions to reach a deal and keep those trains rolling next month. Month. They have made a counterproposal to the district that exceeds more than 10 million in savings from our earlier previous proposal. The unions promise the public a Game Changing proposal. Last month governor jerry brown stepped into the bart labor dispute by asking a judge to call a 60day cooling off period. Reporter senator feinstein says she mourns those killed at the navy yard and asked when will enough be enough. Senator feinstein said Congress Must do more to stop this endless loss of life. She said the event is added to the litany of massacres that occur when a deranged person or killer is able to obtain multiple weapons and kill many people in a short amount of time. Feinstein has long been a gun control activist and tried for stricter gun laws after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting last december. Earlier this year feinsteins assault weapons ban and expanded background checks did not pass the senate. San francisco supervisor has introduced new legislation called due process for all that would prohibit the immigration detention. Tonight a meeting will be held to consider a city law to ban smoking in most of downtown walnut creek. In june the city council delayed hearing the proposal but tonight the issue is back on the table. The plan would ban smoking in commercial areas, at Public Events and in cityowned parks. In the past five years, doctors say triple the amount of white men between the ages of 40 and 60 are getting throat cancer. Doctors say those cases are all caused by coming into contact with hpv. Doctors say most symptoms involve a painless lump at the back of the throat and an unexplained loss of weight. An 18yearold man is in the hospital after being hit by a car on isabel avenue on arrowway boulevard in livermore. A honda Station Wagon driven by a 44yearold man from press santon hit the 18yearold as he was crossing the road. He was seriously injured and taken to the hospital. The driver of the honda was interviewed by police and later released. Anyone who might have witnessed this accident, though, is asked to call police. More officers could soon be headed to the Oakland Police department. Its part of a federal grant that will bring more officers to cities across the state. Firefighters in oakland still at the scene of that fast moving fire that damaged those two homes there in west oakland. This started about 3 30 this morning on 24th street near market. Ktvus alex savage is out there talking to investigators. Youre back up for. They think they know what back now. They think they know what caused the fire. Reporter investigators think the fire was caused by an issue with the electrical system. It started inside a laundry room and in the end this fire actually burned through two homes that sit side by side here on this street. The flames actually threatened to spread to a third home but crews were able to contain them. Got news is everyone made is out safely here after this fire erupted around 3 30 this morning. These homes are on 24th street just off market. The fire started in the back of a blue twostory home and then jumped over to the place right next door. Because these are older victorian homes, firefighters say the flames spread quickly from the ground floor up to the second floor and into the attic. A total of 12 people were inside those two homes sleeping at the time. One neighbor describes some tense moments as he tried to help everyone escape. He even knocked down a door to get to a woman inside. As soon as we got the door open, she started screaming and running down the stairs. I ran in my house. I got two glasses of water. I brought it to my friends who live right there and to her. She thanked me. She said you need to get some oxygen and ive just been standing here to get oxygen because i breathed in those fumes. Reporter inside the home firefighters did find three rifles. Those weapons were turned over to police who were out here on scene and obviously police will be checking to see if those weapons are properly registered. No firefighters were injured this morning and neither were any of the people who live inside those two homes. All of them are being helped out this morning by the red cross. And as we came back out here live, you can see most of the oakland fire crews have cleared out of the scene here. They were here for the last couple of hours trying to knock down any hot spots to make sure this fire was all the way out. A registered sex offender arrested in Mountain View is also a suspect in an attack against a 10yearold girl in san mateo. This is video from San Mateo Police of a suspect in a barnes and noble store. He lured the girl to annual isolated area to an isolated area of the store and attacked it. The description matches that of 70yearold Christopher Miller who was arrested ten days ago in Mountain View. Police say there he was arrested after touching himself in front of a woman and two young children. Hes also the suspect in a relate related incident . New york city. The washington, d. C. The suspect crashed right here. We just learned that items stolen from other cars nearby were found here at the crash scene. Now, police say the number of victims in this case is growing. Police found the chevy suburban already crashed in the eastbound lanes of coleman at 4 00 this morning. It matched the description of a vehicle that a car burglar was driving. Police believe the man inside who was taken away to the hospital is the suspect. They received 911 calls from several residents in a neighborhood close by that there were two suspicious vehicles and a suspect there trying to break into cars. Officers received a call of a possible vehicle burglary and a description of the suspects was put out. And as officers responded, they spotted would was possibly a related vehicle. And in trying to maneuver their vehicles to get behind him, the vehicles fled at a high rate of speed. Reporter police say because theyve been able to determine that the chevy suburban that crashed is stolen, they will address the driver who they say is in his 20s. We know hes been airlifted to sanford hospital and he is in serious condition. Officers are out in the neighborhood trying to determine if there are even more victims. So far theyve been able to tell us there are at least four victims. As i mentioned, some of the stolen items were found here. Another assault involving a gun was reported the same night and one Fraternity Member has a broken jaw after being attacked on friday.
