In the north bay you can see toward santa rose sarks that vat dough rosa, novato. San francisco covered with the clouds toward san mateo, hayward and san jose and Mountain View at last check. Current temperatures are ranging from the upper 50s. Half moon bay 57 degrees. Lots of 60s for San Francisco, Oakland San Jose currently checking in 65 degrees. Forecast for this morning, you guessed it. Were talking about some low clouds and then by 9 00, the clouds still over the bay and right near the immediate coastline. Clouds pull back near the shoreline into the afternoon hours. The forecast for the beaches for today, this afternoon areas of fog and drizzle. Still some leftover patches this afternoon. By 3 00 63 to 68 degrees. Right around the bay, basically the same deal for this morning. Then we gradually strip away the clouds for this afternoon. Mid70s to the lower 80s. Inland neighborhoods, the key difference this morning compared to yesterday morning, patchy fog returns. At least it will be part of our forecast for this morning. But then lots of sunshine and a nice recovery with temperatures this afternoon for temperatures this afternoon. Late other today these numbers not a big change from yesterdays readings. People are taking alternate routes, mark. You will see the san mateo bridge now has a crash at the toll plaza westbound 92. Doesnt sound like its too serious. There is complaint of pain for one of the people involved in the crash and theyre trying to get it out of there as soon as they can but traffic is going to be busy as you drive through. As you drive on the bay area if youre driving on the Richmond Bridge heading down to the Golden Gate Bridge, that traffic is not as bad this morning getting into San Francisco. Lets take a look at pardon me some live pictures now. I want to show you the san mateo bridge, right where geneva is standing. Just about to talk to her in a moment. Were doing kind of like Team Coverage on the san mateo bridge and the traffic is looking busy. One more thing. This is northbound 280 getting up to highway 17. The traffic is moving along pretty well. So the south bay hasnt been affected. Irp right at the bridge. All of a sudden there are a lot fewer cars coming your way. This could be because of a crash on the other side. You see how the volume has gone down the last few minutes. Reporter yeah, i would say about 15 minutes ago it was a lot heavier traffic here. We saw cars coming in the southbound direction. We were curious why we were seeing less. Its most likely because of the accident. Were on the foster city side. We were seeing a lot more brake lights as people headed there to connect to 101 north. I dont know if its less cars coming off the bridge because ever the accident. Lets go to a live picture of the toll plaza right now. Traffic is slowing flowing smoothly right now but again that accident, you cant see it but it hatched eastbound but it happened eastbound at the toll plaza involving three cars, a cab, a dump truck and a nissan. No injuries we heard. But the toll plaza there, if youre not used to paying, its going to cost you about 5. Expected to be a more popular route than the richmond, san rafael and Golden Gate Bridge because thats going to cost you about 11 to get into the city. I want to show you again another live look at what the traffic looks like. Again a lot more cars heading westbound compared to the eastbound direction. Theyre dooming by on the eastbound zooming by in the eastbound direction. Give yourself extra time this morning as well as making sure your car has a full tank of gas just to prepare for you do get tied up in traffic. Heres a live look at the toll plaza with some of the work thats going on right now. Caltrans shut down the old 77 yearold eastern span right on schedule at 8 00 last night. The closure clears the way for crews to put the finishing touches on its new 6. 4 billion the goal is to have the new eastern span ready in time for the early Tuesday Morning commute. This morning crews are now involved in the first phase of the massive project. They are starting the grinding process. And to connect the bridge at the eastern end into the toll plaz disarks we need to bind plaza, we need to grind up all the pavement from pretty much the macarthur maze on to the new bridge. The fiveday closure is expected to end by 5 00 Tuesday Morning. However, it is possible that the new bridge could open late monday after the official opening ceremony. However, project managers say they face a huge job in the days ahead and an early opening is not guaranteed. Its the end of an ear a. This is the of an era. There is an automobile there. Theyre the last to cross the toll plaza at 8 00 last night. Some drivers told us it was a bit nostalgic about their last trip [ inaudible ] and then there were people who didnt know or forgot. Caltrans shut down the bridge right on schedule. 8 00 last night. As you can see, some people hoped to cross the bridge but did not get the message or was hoping it was going to be late. There was some chaos and confusion on both sides of the bay. Time 6 07. A lot of people will be taking bart while the bay bridge is closed. Bart is expanding service for the next five days. Ktvus christian captain just rode a bart train to San Francisco. You took us along with you live. Youre at the embarcadaro station. How was that commute, christian . Reporter were here at the embarcadaro station. Take a look around. There are passengers here right now. There are plenty of folks already at the bart station. This is nothing exairld to what the trains are like. Compared to what the trains are like. We caught the train in walnut creek at about 5 20 this morning and we arrived here at the embarcadaro station at 5 55. So the train was just about on schedule. It worked perfectly. The big difference between a regular morning commute on bart and this mornings commute was the amount of passengers on there. You can see just how many passengers were on there. It was standing room only by the time the obtain train reached walnut creek. We saw a lot of passengers headed to the airport with their luggage and a lot of occasional riders, regular riders tell us it was much, much busier than usual and theyre expecting very full trains this evening when they head home. Im going to be standing. Its going to be squeezed in here because its packed in here when i go home at 3 00. Its standing room only at that time. Reporter you can see another train pulling in here, this one heading out to dublin pleasanton. Not very full heading out of san fran. You can expect those trains will be very full this evening trying to get out of San Francisco. Bart will be running trains 24 hours a day through monday. Then on monday theyll be back on a saturday schedule. On tuesday there will be no bart service between 1 00 and 4 00 a. M. Again the big notice, get there to your bart stations early if you want to try to get a parking space. Parking is going to be at a premium. If you arrive at your bart station a little later this morning, there may very well be not any parking. On what our plan is going to be this morning. Once we are done here now, were going to head back to walnut creek and take that commute in one more time between 7 00 and 9 00 to get a sense of what that commute is like at the height of the commute. Additional runs are being offered. The larkspur ferry is adding a late night round trip on friday along with added trips over the weekend. But i can tell you the larkspur ferry parking lot fills up earlile. The sausalito ferry will have added service on saturday, sunday and monday. When you combine the bay bridge closure and the rim fire burning in yosemite, Labor Day Holiday travel will be anything but normal. Many travelers are canceling plans of vacation in lake tahoe and the sierras because of all the smoke and the fire from the rim fire and because of traffic. Still aaa says many californians will hit the road for labor day. An estimated 3. 9 Million People in california will travel 50 miles or more this weekend, and thats up 6 over last year. Community meeting set for today about how the city of fairfield responded to that big fire, the one that burned five homes and damaged ten others. Some homeowners say the stir is partly to blame the city is partly to blame for not maintaining all the dry vegetation along interstate 80 that fueled tuesday nights fire. Homeowners say the grass had not been cut since last year and it was chest high. Ive heard that and were investigating that. Whose responsibility is that grassy strip if. Thats what were looking into. We dont have an answer right now. The city of fairfield says the Disaster Recovery team is being formed to help the home owns are there rebuild. Investigators are also adding up all the destructive damage if the fire, including damage to an at t storage area. Believe it or not it was eight years ago today that Hurricane Katrina devastated new orleans and the gulf coast. 1800 people were killed in that storm. More than a hundred billion dollars in damage was caused. The ninth ward of new orleans was hit the hardest. One in union city. The other in freemont. In both cases police say the woman knocked on peoples doors with a phony story about dangerous snakes being in the area. The ugly check in on the commute without the bay bridge. Thats right. The alternate routes are filling up, pam, and david. And we did have a crash approaching the san mateo bridge. That crash cleared. They got it out of the way. However, the traffic on the san mateo bridge approach is a little busier now but all the lanes are open and people are getting on the bridge. You can see right now traffic is getting through so theres a minor delay, kind of a minor delay getting through but now everyone is on the way over to the other side of the bridge. Lets go right here. You can see traffic and our crew there is probably going to start noticing more and more traffic showing up here on westbound 92. There was kind of a momentary lapse in the traffic as they got that crash out of the way. So far it looks good heading over to 10192. But you can see that traffic is getting busier. Hopefully were not hoping for the worst but prepared for it in case it happens. Lets take a look at other alternate route. That would be a look at the way up through richmond and getting across the richmondsan rafael bridge. Thats also getting a little bit slow. And coming down to marin county from lets say the mill valley to the toll plaza of the Golden Gate Bridge, thats just moderate in case you want to do that. Weve also been checking on barpt and bart is doing pretty bart and bart is doing pretty well this morning. 101 is looking good all the way up into san bruno and beyond. Here is our roof camera. You can see here looking out toward basically oakland here. Looks like the coliseum. Lots of overcast and the cloud cover has been increasing over the past three to six hours. So while you were sleeping, that cloud deck expanding in size. Right now basically covering a good portion of the bay area. Even out toward livermore reporting mostly cloudy skies. In the north bay santa rosa mostly cloudy. Napa some overcast. San francisco some dense fog showing up right near the Golden Gate Bridge. We have some dense fog that could impact your visibility this morning for the morning commute. Still some more cloud cover out toward san jose and the free month area. As far as freemont area. As far as wind speeds, 21 miles an hour. Santa rosa reporting a calm wind at last check. Current temperatures are in the upper 50s, lots of 60s around the bay. So were off to a mild start. Here is your forecast for today. Well break it down beginning at 7 00 this morning. Areas of fog and possibly some drizzle out there. Then by 12 00 partly sunny skies. Patchy fog. You get the idea. We strip away the clouds into the afternoon hours and a big temperature range all the way from the low 60s to the 70s, 80s. Warmest locations could be right around 90 degrees. This area of low pressure is camped up here to our north and to our west. High pressure is trying to build back in. Thats why temperatures have been warming up a bit over the past few days. No big changes for today with the drizzle a factor coastside for the morning hours. Were thinking 8 as around the bay, 70s and drizzle around the bay tsz too. The coast main bay itself too. The coast mainly in the 60s. The high will build back in and tomorrow will be the warmest day of the week. Lake tahoe dealing with some smoke and right into the weekend all the factor on the behavior of the rim fire. Temperatures this weekend basically in the upper 70s to near 80 degrees. At least one of them i think. Lets take a look at the commute now, mark, on the closure. People using the Richmond Bridge. It is a little bit busy but i would say the other alternate would be the san mateo. More people are using that. There are just more people who live in the center part of the bay. By the way, its a little cheaper to use the san mateo bridge but it is very heavy after the earlier crash and also just because of the traffic patterns. Its slow in hayward on 8830 and also 92 880 and also 92 getting across over to the other side. Whats improved is the commute on the foster city side. I want to show a live picture to you here. I think we have were looking at 880 first. It slows in hey water as you drive to 92. Now we can show you that hayward as you drive to 92. Now we can show you that picture coming off the san mateo bridge. Earlier there was a little bit of a glitch. When the traffic happened it was lighter and now its getting busier and its going to happen where traffic is now beginning to slow down here or get busy heading over to the super busy 10192 interchange. At 6 32 i want to mention that Tara Moriarty has some new information, just got the latest on the caltrans construction. Reporter we spoke to chp and they say everything is going according to panel. Right to plan. Here at construction headquarters, its been pretty bustling. The flow of trucks and sound of jack hammers pretty consistent. Were on a side road near the bay bridge toll plaza and crews will be working around the clock on this transition project. At peak times there will be as many as 400 workers on site. Theyre in the process now of churning up the roadway. Caltrans shut down the old bray bridge at 8 00 last night to begin the new phase. Traffic wise the chp said last night and this morning it went off without a hitch. So far so good. Our closures are in effect. We had no issues, no incidents overnight. Nobody tried to get through. People are respecting the closures and the highway patrolman on scene. Reporter next crews will demolish about a thousand feet of the old bridge to make room for a temporary bike approach. Theyll have new barriers, paving and striping. Theyll also be inspecting the western span. Then theyll dismantle the rest of the old bridge piece by piece. It will largely be gone in nine months. Some of the old pieces will be saved for historic purposes but much of the steel will be recycled or sold possibly to china. Im Tara Moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. A lot of commuters are getting up early this morning to beat the traffic because the bay bridge is closed down. Ktvus jeanine de la vega watching one of the popular detours. What is it like at the san mateo bridge . Reporter were here at the bottom of the bridge. If you take a look at this westbound traffic, you can see that its definitely starting to get heavier here. Cars are slowing down as they get off the bridge and come into the peninsula and head into san fran. Again the traffic is a lot busier. Cars on the eastbound side are zooming by. You can bet a lot of these people woke up early because they didnt want to get into bigger backup. Thats most likely to happen later on in the morning. This bridge is expected to be one of the more popular routes, a detour since the bay bridge is closed. I want to go to the live camera at the toll plaza just to show you what it looks like there. Its busier than normal. Its not stop and go traffic. I would call it slow and go traffic. There was an earlier minor accident but now all the lanes are clear. That was eastbound to the toll plaza. It did cause a little bit of a glitch but its all cleared up now. Just remember if you are paying cash, stay to the right hand side because the back take users are going track users are going to be on the left hand side. Lets go to a live picture. This is what it looks like, the westbound lanes of 92 just coming off the bridge. I dont see any brake lights just yet. Traffic is still slowing but again were going to be monitoring all this as the morning goes on and intromornings on 2 to and into mornings on 2 to let you know if it gets into a tremendous backup. But so far not yet. Traffic still slowing. A lot of people will be taking bart while the bay bridge is closed. Bart is expanding service for the next five days. Christian captain is actually on a bart train right now. Chris yang, youre there. I know youre christian, youre there. I know youre heading towards were headed towards walnut creek. Lets give you a live look around so you can see what the car looks like. It is not that full at this point heading toward the eastern direction but you can expect things to change this evening. Earlier we rode into San Francisco from walnut creek and we can tell you we saw packed trains at that time. It was standing room only by the time the train reached walnut creek. Regulars say it was much more crowded than usual. We spoke with some riders who are occasional bart riders. A lot of people heading toward San Francisco international airport. They said that they would ordinarily have taken the bridge in if theyre going to go to the airport but they said with the bridge closed, bart seemed like their best option. We would have driven ordinarily. Because of the bridge we decided to take the bart in [ inaudible ] a little surprising to see this many people in the morning but, you know, when you really think about it, its about right right. Reporter back to our live shot. You can see passengers again still heading towards eastbound here on [ inaudible ] bart Service Running 24 hours through monday. Monday bart will be on a saturday service. There will be no bart service on tuesday from 1 00 a. M. Till 4 00 a. M. Parking of course the big issue. Lots of people are going to be riding bart so you ask expect those parking lots may already be full. Well be checking on that in walnut creek once we arrive there. Then later on well be heading again back from walnut creek back into San Francisco at the height of the commute to give you a sense of how much additional traffic and how many additional passengers bart is carrying. Again, we are live right now on the bart train headed somewhere between arun today and lafayette on our way to walnut creek. You ferry riders, get ready for lots of company on the morning commute. Coming up at 6 45, where expert runs are being added on the ferry and how tough it could be to get a seat. Time is now 6 38. Happening today, some bay area fast food workers are planning to walk off the job. At least three protests are planned this morning in oakland. Its part of a nationwide strike to form a union for fast food workers and also to raise the minute maam salary to 15 bucks an hour. The bureau of labor and statistics saysed average fast food worker makes about says the average fast food worker makes about 8. 68 an hour and most of them work part time. I cant live on that i have to debate if im going to buy food that night or take the bus the next morning. The fast Food Industry says if they raised the minimum wage, that would force them to raise prices which could drive away customers and could lead to layoffs. Today the Bay Area Bike Share Program officially launches. 700 bikes will be available in San Francisco, redwood city, palo alto, Mountain View and san jose. Most racks are near Public Transit stations along caltrans routes. Other cities have their own bike share programs and offer more bikes but this is the first one in the country to involve several cities in one region. Very interesting. Time is 6 40. A lot of people are turning to the ferries to get to work. Brian is at the alameda fire to show us what its like. How is it going . There are was a long line a few moments ago but most of the people are on the ferry this morning. Expected to leave probably a couple minutes from now. There were long lines earlier. So far the bay ferry is running smoothly this morning. I just got off the phone with ernest sanchez, a spokesperson with the bay ferries. Again things are running smoothly but its a very long morning to say the least so there may be some delays later. San Francisco Bay ferries say they will be running 11 boats this morning taking commuters into San Francisco and vice versa. On a normal service, theres typically eight ferries that run. San Francisco Bay ferries say they are expecting a 15 increase during the closure. Not a big increase as we saw during the bart strike but an increase nonetheless. Some riders we spoke with this morning say theyre actually surprised there isnt a longer line this morning like there was during the bart strike. I actually missed the strike because i was on vacation. Talking to my other regular riders who i ride with every day, they say it was three, four times normal the amount of people. It would be smart to get here a little earlier than normal. Reporter larkspur ferries also adding more ferry boats. Not today, though or tomorrow but over the weekend. Salsilito ferry will have added service on saturday, sunday and monday as well. As we take you back out here live, theres going to be lots of traffic on the water as well. You see a big large boat coming into the bay as well to kind of manage the traffic here in the bay. But not as big as a line we saw during the bart strike. The Biggest Issue right now is finding pashing. When you get to the Ferry Terminals, the lines arent so bad but finding parking may be a problem. If you still can, get here early. Brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. We have continue willing coverage of the rim fire. It has burned more than 192,000 acres in and around Yosemite National park. That fire is now 30 contained but full containment is now expected for another three weeks. Parks Officials Say yosemite is still open for Labor Day Weekend. Just 5 of the parks 761,000 acres have burned. Tioga road is closed along with the entrance at highway 120. Other entrances at tioga pass, highway 140 and highway 41 are open. Traffic is also slow as you drive on 8830 and you drive through 880 and you drive through. Public transportation looking good. Bart, cal train, muni, not reporting any delays. Then theyre going to come in and repave and a nice new path to the new bridge which will open on tuesday. It may open sooner than that but theyre doing a lot of work at the toll plaza. Police acruise dylan griner of secretly taking inappropriate photos of young girls at the sea horse swim school. The school uses the pool at santa cruz high and he was a volunteer. So far investigators have identified more than a dozen alleged victims in this case. Prosecutors in marin county say theyve linked another murder to convicted serial killer joseph naso. He was found guilty last week of killing four women in the 1970s and the 90s. Court records show investigators have now connected him to the murder of a 56yearold woman whose body was stuffed in garbage bags in tiburon in 1981.
