Amber lee, ktvu fox 2news. Back now to our coverage of the ghost ship fire. Speaking now is max briggs the attorney for max harris, speaking on behalf of max harris who is charged with next in connection. They kicked in his door and treated him like a criminal. They dragged him to jail. He is currently in jail. He has lost all of his freedom. He is not a criminal. He was a community of artists who were trying to build something beautiful who fell victim to a slumlord owner of that property and he acknowledge that he is the fortunate one. He was able to survive. Its important that people understand max harris never ran. Max harris tried to save lives that night. Max harris was present when the fire broke out. He was the first to try to put it out. He guided people out of that building, out of that death trap, putting his own life at risk. When he could no longer stand it he went to the side of the building. He broke a fence with his bare hands so that firefighters and rescue people could get in there to try to save lives. He was as surprised as any person that was there that night of what happened. Anything different, anything less than that, that is told to you by the das office is an attempt to give a free pass to a multimillionaire foreign landlord and an attempt to prosecute wrongfully a fine member of oaklands artistic community. Today we are here to show the public that Community Members stand behind max harris. People that know him, not just people that read headlines but people that know him, support him. People that know him love him. People that know him believe in him. They are here to stand by him in this fight. I will introduce tyler smith who is going to read a written statement prepared by mr. Harris himself. Then after that we will go to mr. Geller and i will answer questions at the end. We will proceed through mr. Smith and then mr. Geller and then friends and family and then i will take questions from everybody. Thank you. Thank you for being here today. Before i read maxs statement i want to see you a couple of words. I want to address some of the things that i have seen online. People that dont know max, people demonizing him. People saying he is a bad person. Anyone that says that obviously does not know who max harris is. I have had the pleasure of getting to know him a little bit recently and i was blown away by what a warm, spiritual gentle soul that he is. With that said i will just read his statement. I would like to start with a moment of silence for those who perished and were impacted by this tragedy. Oakland i come to you i came to you a weary traveler struggling as an artist, poor in resources but abu nda nt in the spirit of love and longing for community. I came to visit and i nearly left. For nearly fiveyears the Community Spirit and shared struggle attached to my heart strings. Truly we are a people of brotherly love and free spirit. Especially in the face of economic imbalance, andive difference from the offices that do not all return the togetherness and Community Spirit of the people they are meant to serve. We are a people of struggle and triumph. I experienced hardships likely familiar to many here. The rising cost of rent, landlords a plague of bed bugs and displacement. It was these circumstances that led me to the arts and music collective know known as ghost ship where i came to live and grow. It was a blessing. Nowhere had i previously known a more Diverse Group of creative, beautiful souls. Over the nearly two years i spent in this place i had the pleasure of coming to know hundreds of different members of oaklands community. From the elders of lake merits drum circle, often displaced by complaints of the residential newcomers to members of the Lgbtq Community seeking places to gather free from violence and judgement to members of the still intact fruitvale community neighborhood. A place where i and many others felt hope for the preservation of the Community Spirit and the quality of life more than bearable. A place of fertility and growth that has not betrayed its roots. I tried to crawl out of the depths of sadness that drowned my heart. I had tried in what i believed to be a rabid rebuilding of the shattered pieces of my life, healing and embarking on a creative path of honoring the shared purpose of my brothers and sisters lost. The spirit of true music is immutable and i tried to honor each life lost. How unexpectedly the great mystery moves the hearts of man. Its now facing these charges that i am heartbroken to be both someone who witnessed the horrible events and who lost loved ones but who now is on trial for something that i never would have imagined possible. I have always been a man of faith through reward or tribulation but it is now in these all trying circumstances that i believe i have come to know the endless well spring of love from the community. It is said there is no burden placed upon a soul heavier than can be borne. I do know that mine is full of love and hope for myself and for this world. I only pray nah im allowed to serve my strengthened inspired purpose and walk again under open skies knowing the full bounty and grace be stowed upon us here. Thank you, max harris. This is my colleague sam geller. Hi. You are listening to tyler smith. Attorney for max harris who is charged in the deadly ghost ship fire. Up next the surprising effect sciencists say the huge snow pack in the sierra has on the earths crust. And the weather outside looking great right now. Coming up rosemary has a look at our weekend forecast and the heat wave headed our way. A new study shows the california weather could impact the earths crust and researchers at berkeley say that the weight of the winter snow pack or lack may have a connection to earthquakes. Janet explains. Reporter Christopher Johnson is on a mission. This black line is showing the fault as it moves north throughout the place boundary. Reporter and a search started with a simple question, could california earthquakes be triggered by the changing amounts of water and snow across the seasons. The study by johnsons team in ohio appeared in Science Magazine thursday and breaks new ground. We find during the winter that the weight of the snow builds up in the mountain many its pushing the mountains down about a fraction of an inch. Reporter johnson and the Research Team looked at nearly 700gps sensors throughout california that record the rising and settling of the earths crust. The weight of the snow and water throughout the winter months is actually pushing the crust down and its flexing the crust. Reporter when heavy winter snow packs in the sierra and topped up reservoirs start to run off in the spring it unloads that weight on the crust. And clamps the faults together and then in the spring and summer as the snow melts and some of that runs off through rainer, some of that goes in the to ground and be get the loss of water and with that rebounding we get this kind of unclamping effect. Reporter the data came from 2006 to 2014 through wet years and doubt and found that the number of earthquakes, 2. 0 and higher slightly increased during the dryer summer and fall months. We see about a 10 change throughout the year. Reporter johnson said the study doesnt have enough datey to link the results to big earthquakes in the past. Scientists still cant predict when the next big one may hit. Johnson said that learning about the small ones help get a better picture of each fault and now his sights set on someplace with a greater water load. A place with plenty of earthquakes, rain, snow and glaciers. The next step forward is to start looking atlas lass and see if we can further these types of studies.
