In that case the man was stabbed 50 times as he slept in this doorway. His friends and family are still trying to make sense of his killing. He grown up with me. He is very nice guy. Reporter Santa Rosa Police say they are concerned about two random stabbings within a matter of days and they are working now to figure out if the man they have in custody is responsible for both crimes. Investigators have not yet identified the young man who was stabbed without warning as he watched a movie here at this theater yesterday. At last check he remained hospitalized with critical injuries while the man suspected of attacking him was booked into jail on a charge of attempted murder. In santa rosa, alex savidge, ktvu fox 2 news. As we have been reporting, there has been a lot of scrutiny over the judge in the brock turner rape case. So ktvu is now taking a closer look at his cases. The judge was set to approve a plea agreement today that would send man to prison for three years for the Sexual Assault of his roommate. Critics argue its a harsher penalty than brock turner received. Persky sentenced turner to six months in jail. Several recent Stanford Law School graduates have said that the two cases are not similar and recalling the judge taints the judicial process. We believe this campaign to recall judge persky is righteous and wrong because the evidence shows us that when we subject judges to elections, it leads to unfair sentences for people involved in the criminal justice system. A stanford law professor is spearheading the effort to have the judge recalled. Raul ramirez was a noshow this morning. We have more information about a man who was arrested last week in San Francisco on suspicion of trying to have sex with an underage girl he met online. 45yearold emmanuel ellisoon worked as a teacher and librarian in several east bay school districts, including oakland and alameda. One of his former colleagues said she reported him to her bosses two years ago after ellisoon told her he was a sex addict. Fire crews have been able to increase the containment of the trailhead fire burning in placer and el dorado counties. Now crews estimate they will have the fire fully contained by july 4th. Reporter we are at the georgetown airport. This is a good geographic point to point out where the fire is. Its on the far side of this airport down the canyon away from georgetown where this fire is burning right now. Yesterday we did see some aggressive fire in those canyons. However, the growth was not explosive. In fact, the latest numbers are just under 1,300 acres have burned. About 12 containment. So the good news here is not a whole lot of explosive growth, but there is some concern. Daniel, we understand the fire is burning away from both forrest hill and georgetown right now. What are you seeing fire behaviorwise as far as the season so far . Extremely dry conditions despite the rainfall we saw in the winter and spring. In this elevation we have pockets of dead trees. A large wildfire near san diego has quilled two people. Their bodies were located yesterday afternoon in a rural area burned by the fire. The woman is suffering from burns. This is exactly what police and firefighters are trying to prevent. They are actually going to be targeting neighborhoods where there has been problems before. This happened on tuesday night. The woman was walking home from the park with her young son and his on remington way near quinby when a loud explosion went off. Witnesses say someone inside a passing car lit what was believed to be an m80 firework and threw it at the family. The car sped away. Paramedics rushed to the scene. I feel like fourth of july is not gonna be fun because i dont know if they are doing this on purpose. We developed teams out of the Patrol Division that are specifically targeting fireworks violation. They are going out into the community. Any time a call comes out regarding any type of fireworks violation, they are the ones that are deployed and making contact with the citizens. Reporter starting on friday, police will step up patrols, especially in parks, schools, and neighborhoods where people like to put on illegal fireworks shows. This year the fines have increased to 500 all the way up to 1,000. More city officials such as code endorsement officers and park rangers are able to cite violators as well. They are going to be overwhelmed with calls, but they hope by getting the word out it will help deter people from using them. Now to oakland where investigators are looking for a fourdoor sedan involved in an Early Morning police chase that ended with a chp cruiser slamming into three parked cars. The passenger in the suspect vehicle began spraying what was believed to be a fire extinguisher at them. Possibly a distraction. Meanwhile, chp officers are trying to determine what caused this fiery crash near petaluma yesterday that killed a big rig driver. The driver was heading south when he veered off lakeville highway. There were reports of a possible real life active shooter situation at the malcolm medical grove facility. All personnel were told to shelter in place. One base employee says he was flooded with texts, messages from coworkers warning him of the possible active shooter investigation. Some type of communication mishap led to her being euthanized. Contra costa Animal Service officials have launched an official investigation. Some animal activists including no kill contra costa are expressing concern. They advocate for a no kill policy for the contra costa Animal Services shelter. Shelter Officials Say close to 80 of animals brought to the county shelter made it out alive. Thats up from 45 back in 2011. Now, contra costa Animal Services say they should have the investigators completed by the end. Week. Once they do, those findings will be made public. In campbell, a pet owner is searching for answers after her dog died while being groomed at a petsmart store. She dropped off her chihuahua tuesday afternoon for a nail grooming appointment. Reporter Richmond Police say around 1 45 monday morning a man broke into her apartment through a sliding glass door before make higgs way into her room where she was asleep. Something woke me. I looked over and he was standing there. Reporter she grabbed her cell phone, but the suspect took it from her. The two struggled and he dragged her from her bed through the hall bay. I was terrified. Nothing i could think of was to scream and scream and scream. Reporter she managed to get away, locking herself in the bathroom for the next 45 minutes while the suspect took her items. But soskin wasnt giving up. She prepared to defend herself with an iron. I plugged it in and set it to the hottest. I figured if he came in i was gonna brand him and that that would mark him for the police. Reporter the suspect got away with an ipad, laptop and cell phone. He also took commemorative coins, including this one given to her by president obama for being the Oldest Park Ranger in the u. S. He had the coin, president ial coin, in his palm and he transferred it to mine and it was done secretly, which made it even more important. Reporter she says most of the items she can live without, but the coin she received from the president in december is dear to her. If i got that coin back, i think i could forgive anything. Reporter she says she is not a victim because ultimately she took care of herself. She says she is not going anywhere. This is my space and it was invaded and i need to reclaim it. So i am going to stay here. Reporter the suspect is a white male in his early to mid 20s, 58, and he has a slim build. Hopefully, it will include an arrest as well. Fremont police are searching for a hitandrun driver who killed a 65yearold woman. It happened near the fremont bart station on walnut avenue at 9 30 tuesday night. The woman was transported to a hospital but later died. Now investigators are looking for a silver or gray suv or van with front end and passenger side damage. Anyone who may have information about this case is asked to call police. Hundreds of people in one san jose apartment complex are told they have to find a new place to live. The reserve apartments are set to be demolished next year and replaced with a new development. There are 200 units at that complex. This eviction could be one of the largest ever in Silicon Valley. We have been reporting on the state of homelessness around the bay area. As part of a coordinated effort with 70 other media organizations, todays story focuses on a recent survey that found that homelessness is the number one concern among San Francisco residents. But as ktvus Monte Francis reports, one of the Biggest Challenges is how to help mentally ill People Living on the streets. Reporter michael has lived with Mental Illness all his life diagnosed with anxiety. He spent two years homeless on the streets of San Francisco. I was suicidal and that actually really kind of scared me because for the first time in my life it wasnt just a thought. It was more like i am going to do this. Reporter he checked in a psychiatric hospital. After five days doctors released him. He knew he would be back on the streets. The medication i was on made me sleepy. I said i am not going to take it. I am going to be in the same position all over again. Reporter for many who are both homeless and mentally ill, its a revolving door. The citys Homeless Survey estimates that more than one third of the citys 6700 Homeless People suffer from psychiatric conditions. Many of those patients visit the clinic in the citys tenderloin district. Mental illness is different from any other kind of illness. Its the illness itself that prevents people or can prevent people from knowing that they have something that could benefit from help and treatment and then doing something about it. Reporter she says many times the most she can do is make a connection with a mentally ill patient hoping they decide on their own to receive treatment. People dont want to take medication. Then its a matter of time and working with someone trying to convince them that its really worth a try. Reporter ann fisher says a sea change happened in california in the late 1960s when the state closed more than half of its psychiatric hospitals and governor Ronald Reagan signed a law preventing the mentally ill from being forced into treatment except in the most extreme circumstances. [ technical difficulty ] long term care, maybe a hospital bed. Those beds were no longer available. Reporter there are some new attempts to get people with the most severe cases of Mental Illness into treatment. Last late year lauras law went into effect in San Francisco named for laura wilcox. A 19yearold from novato county killed by a mentally ill man. What it does is allows family members, loved ones, people in the community so that they know someone with a Mental Illness to petition the court to bring that person in front of a judge to compel treatment. Reporter but even with lauras law, ultimately a patient can refuse treatment. Thats part of the problem. The standard now is they must either be a danger to themselves or a danger to other people. Otherwise, you cant do anything about it. We need to change that law and make it more appropriate for the circumstances of individuals who will thank you for having been of assistance. Reporter michael says his break through came when he realized he needed help and a case manager helped him get into a program. Pain, misery, loneliness, not having anything. Thats what broke through, is my mind opened up. Reporter once off the streets and into treatment and back on medication, his life changed dramatically. Today i dont live in an institution. I have an apartment in millbrae with my fiancee. Reporter he now mentors psychiatric patients at San Francisco general hospital. We feel like we are being judged left and right, and there is so much stigma around Mental Illness, right . So, you know, when we feel when we can open a space for someone and there is no judgment there, its something that i thought i wish i had because, you know, i didnt have that.
