In support of the government. Flames tore through a Cambodian Buddhist temple this morning. Reporter as part of a celebration that happens every year, there were as many as a thousand candles left lit inside this temple. You can see some over here near the statue. Those unattended candles in all likelihood sparked this Early Morning fire. The oakland Cambodian Buddhist temple was destroyed by this fire but thankfully, everybody who was staying here last night made it out safely, although three people were treated for minor injuries, including smoke inhalation. This was the scene around 2 30 a. M. , huge flames burning through the temple on east 10th street and 52nd avenue. Those flames quickly spread to an unoccupied house on the backside of the property and then to the house next door to the temple. A total of 18 people were forced out by the flames including several monks who live here at the temple. We spoke with one after he returned from the hospital this morning. I feel this is why i come and see the back door. I knew i could call the monk, come on out. With any incendiary advice, we dont feel you should leave anything, candles, a fireplace unattended and burning, especially if you plan ongoing to sleep. Reporter the Fire Department says the temple had working smoke detectors and in all likelihood thats why everybody made it out of the fire alive. In the end, three homes were destroyed by the fire including the home that houses this temple and the monk we spoke with this morning says they do plan to rebuild this temple. I asked if he was upset as he returned this morning to see the damage that was done here and he said with a smile on his face, this is how life is. Alex savage, ktvu news. Fremont firefighters at a fire about 6 00 a. M. At a house on hughes place. Six firefighters had to carry a man weighing about 600 pounds from the home. That man was unable to walk and reportedly had not left the home in years. The cause of the fire is under investigation. We are following reports a man was hit by a train at 2nd and gilman in berkeley. Officials responded to that accident about 9 30 a. M. A witness says the man was pinned under the train and was unconscious when he was transported to the hospital. Sources say the victim was visually impaired. Fallout from a report examining the deaths of inmates in the Alameda County jail system. The family of Mario Martinez announced they are filing a federal lawsuit against the county, the sheriff and the jails health care provider. 25yearold martinez died last july at the jail from respiratory problems after he didnt receive a recommended nasal treatment despite two court orders. The lawsuit cites Jail Health Care provider horizon failed to implement generally accepted lawful policies at the jail and delivered indifference to the serious medical needs of patients. Everyone just failed him. And he suffered and died an ugly death, and that probably is the worst part for me. The Sheriffs Office is responsible because they didnt provide the proper care and of course horizon is responsible because they had a duty to provide the medical care and they didnt do it. Last year horizon said martinez received medically appropriate and necessary care prior to his death. The company settled lawsuits worth tens of millions of dollars across the country. A person of interest is in custody in connection with a murder over the weekend. 22yearold Stacy Aguilar was last seen leaving a party with her boyfriend february 13th. Her body was found saturday in a rural area of fremont. Police wont say whether the person of interest is her boyfriend but they do confirm that her boyfriend is in custody on a Domestic Violence charge related to aguilar. Police say they will release the persons identity once prosecutors file charges. The people in this community can sleep at night, not being worried that theres a murderer out on the loose. We are very confident moving forward that this person of interest is the right person. Police say one reason they are not releasing much information is because they are trying to figure out if the person acted alone or if others were involved. Danville police are investigating what they believe to be a murdersuicide. A neighbor called last night to report fumes coming from a closed garage door of a home on cross bridge place. Officers say they arrived to find a 55yearold woman dead inside the home from a gunshot wounds and a 63yearold man unconscious in the garage. He was pronounced dead later at the hospital. Police now have two juveniles in custody in connection with two robberies outside stoneridge mall. They were captured by police in oakland. Reporter the lieutenant here says it came down to good Video Evidence and what he called good Old Fashioned police work, cooperating with other agencies. Police have two 17yearold males in custody for the two robberies that happened in the stoneridge mall parking lot over the weekend. A third suspect is still outstanding although police say that man is under 18. Oakland Police Stopped the two for driving a stolen vehicle and took them into custody. This started saturday evening at the stoneridge mall parking lot around 8 00 p. M. A 17yearold girl was punched and her purse was stolen, then one of three robbers who attacked her flashed a gun or rifle. They used a honda pilot to get away. Cameras captured video of the pilot, and that vehicle was later used in a carjacking at the san leandro bart station. Stolen there, a mercedes suv, which was used in in the second robbery sunday afternoon. In that robbery, a 63yearold woman was attacked and kicked while she was on the ground, and had her purse stolen. Police are working together to figure out what other robberies the young men may be connected to. We believe they were committing robberies throughout the area. We know of three for sure, our two and the carjacking in san leandro. That part of the investigation is ongoing. After the second robbery sunday afternoon, Police Believe the young men continued to drive around the stolen mercedes suv, which is how police found them. Berkeley police are investigating a reported Sexual Assault at a fraternity last friday. Police wont say which one but say the assault took place inside a bedroom during a party. So far no arrests have been made but police say the latest assault comes about a week after three other reported Sexual Assaults occurred not far from campus. Police released Surveillance Video of a possible suspect in those crimes, described as a black or east indian man in his early 20s about 59 to 6 feet tall. One comedian is taking to twitter talking about how he was forced to remove his turban at sfo. He says he received extra screening on his way out of town, and tweeted that he asked for a mirror so he could retie his turban. Three White College students have been found guilt of battery against their former roommate, who was african american. All three were found guilty of battery but the jury dead locked on hate crime charges. The three were accused of repeatedly bullying their africanamerican roommate in 2013, including allegations of putting a bike lock around his neck, locking him in a bathroom and closet, and calling him derogatory names. While todays decision was partially disappointing, it was not despiritting. Our resolve remains unwaiverring. We are disappointed, i thought there was a reasonable doubt. Im not surprised that the jury didnt reach a verdict on the hate crime. The defendants claim the incidents were just pranks. Sentencing is next month and they could each get six months in jail. The president of the university sent a letter to students after that conviction the black Student Union at Lowell High School walked out today to voice concerns. They say there have been several racially charged incidents at the school, one of them involving the defacing of black History Month posters on campus there a couple weeks ago. Tonight the students will speak before the school board. Tonight San Francisco unified is set to vote on whether or not to provide condoms to middle school students. The vote was delayed earlier this month because of chinese new years celebrations. Students would have to meet with a social worker or school nurse before receiving condoms. A new bill aims to set a limit on how much alcohol people can drink in a bar. Its called the responsible intervention for beverage servers training act. If approved, it would require anyone serving alcohol to take a course to identify those who may be drinking too much and intervene, cutting customers off. Already 18 states have laws requiring servers to complete alcohol training courses. Dogs will no longer be allowed to run free in some areas. New rules would only allow dogs off leash in five areas o. Golden Gate National Recreational Area. It would also reduce the amount of space in those areas where dogs could actually go off leash. The park service wants to balance the growing use of the parks with pet owners. Not Everyone Wants to have encounters with dogs.
