Here in oakland. Among the vehicles damaged were several berkeley and Oakland Police cars. It all started around 8 30 am in east oakland when police say they started receiving calls from multiple drivers saying summit had just crashed into their car. In some incidents, drivers said the man had pointed a gun at them. They pursued the driver but canceled it when it became too dangerous. The man eventually abandoned his black mitsubishi and walked here. Witnesses described the scene as he was arrested while police explain what the suspect had done. We saw this guy running out into the middle of the park over there and they were following him, trying to figure out if he had a weapon or Something Like that. They were saying raise your hand in the air but he wasnt listening to them. He just kept walking. We were concerned it would turn into a firefight so we started looking at what was going on. Eventually, they ran him down, and the captured him back multiple multiple cars being struck by the same vehicle with similar descriptions of the suspect. Right now, what we can share with you is the Oakland Police department was involved in attempting many times to stop a vehicle that was involved in many incidents where he drove his vehicle intentionally into other citizens vehicles. Reporter police are asking people to call them if they think the suspect hit their car or other property. A pregnant woman was injured who is now reportedly in stable condition. Police are searching this berkeley neighborhood for the mans gun who they say they believe he tossed along his route. They have contacted the man but wouldnt say with the contactless. Lucky more people arent injured. The chancellor of uc berkeleys wondering if cuts are coming to guilty 150 million deficit. In a letter to the campus community, the chancellor said the university faces difficult decisions to reduce the deficit by about 6 of its budget. He is looking at consolidating some departments, cutting staff, evaluating spending and other measures to begin this summer. The deficit is due to reduced state funding, pension and a tuition freeze. Each goers are being warned to use caution after a couple was swept into the ocean at pacifica. The woman was able to swim back ashore but her husband did drown. He has been identified as larry moore. There are conflicting reports about how the pair actually wound up in the water. Some witnesses say they were on the beach and were pulled into the ocean by a sneaker wave that the coast guard says the husband and wife fell off a nearby pier. This morning, organizers canceled the competition because the waves were just too small. The contest was held was last held six years ago when organizers set minimums of 20 feet, which is a face height of more than 30 feet. The competition began back in 1984 but has only been held eight times since. Meanwhile, the worlds best surfers are heading to the bay area for the mavericks surf contest on friday. Reporter its quiet here along the harbor but on friday, the focus is all going to be on pillar point, behind that ridge. Thats where we usually start seeing the monster waves when it comes time but the waves are so far out, the best way to view the competition is going to be on a screen. It will be streamed online and it all gets underway at 8 am friday. Organizers are watching the forecast and expect conditions to be smooth this friday with waves nearly 40 feet high. The contest hasnt taken place in two years because the weather has not cooperated. A lot of people are pumped that its happening. Organizers sent out invitations to 24 of the worlds test servers yesterday. We are making sure all the plans we have been working on for the last four or five months are getting put into place. The boats, the water patrol, the judges, the athletes making sure they are all going to be here setting them up so that they can stay in the hotels locally. Mavericks will give a boost to local businesses. Several hotels are sold out thursday through saturday. Thats in part due to valentines day weekend but also to the fans and surfers were coming into town. When change this year, there wont be a mavericks festival but viewing parties will be held at local restaurants and pubs around Half Moon Bay that will show the competition. Lets bring in our meteorologist monitoring the surf conditions. No surf contest today because the waves have been picking up a little bit but not the size they need for mavericks. Waves around 4 to 6 feet. In the pacific, here is the swell we are tracking. Its the yellow and orange blob approaching Northern California. You will notice it is also approaching hawaii but the angle is going to be more beneficial for us in terms of wave heights. Heres a look at current wave heights with estimates around 5 feet just offshore but youll notice those wave heights increasing up to 19 feet, up to 30 feet in the core of the season system. Hawaii isnt picking up the swell they needed. We will have and more westerly push with this activity. As a result, mavericks will definitely notice a big bump in the swell beginning tomorrow and into friday. Here is a closer look. Mavericks, pillars point, and that break is about a halfmile offshore. With a look at the forecast, they could have wave faces on the order of 2535 feet. Definitely, we are expecting a big bump in the swell with high surf advisorys in the bay area and im sure well have some very impressive wave footage coming up by friday. Thats always a gamble because you are setting up, preparing for the event. You never know until the morning that you go out there and see it. It could be completely flat or it could be these monster waves. Right now, they are banking on the swell. We saw a little of that in hawaii today. For sure.
