We expect officers to remain here into the evening as they document what happened here at the ups facility where a ups worker is said to have shot and killed three workers, injured two others before fatally turning the gun on himself. Reporter we had a lot of ups workers we saw streaming into the area and eventually streaming back into the area after they had been frisked by police as a precaution. At that time of the morning, police were not sure whether there was another threat whether there was another gunman, but soon within a few hours they confirmed that the suspect allegedly jimmy lam acted alone. There was no further threat to the public, the ups workers or the public in general. Thank you. Now to rob roth. Rob, you spoke to ups employees who survived that shooting and re united with relatives. Reporter thats right. Many ups workers were able to meet with their relatives at a Meeting Place arraigned by the red cross. They wanted to speak and dis straut from whats been a traumatic date. Ups workers were shocked and grief stricken and left wondering how something so awful could happen. One ups driver said he had parked in the driveway and was about to go inside when he heard the sound of gun fire. 6 to 7 shots, like bam, bam, bam, bam. Reporter did you hear anybody say anything. No. I was just starting screaming get out. Gunshots, go, go, go. And everybody started running. Reporter he said he didnt know the gunman but one of the victims was a friend. Shocking. Your life goes through so quick in front of you thinking about your kids and coworkers. Reporter police gathered outside coworkers gathered outside the police perimeter. For a time she didnt know whether her 21yearold son had been hurt or worse. But later she learned he was okay and she was both thankful abd and upset. Another mother also waited to see her daughter. I feel for the parents and the family sh the loved ones of the people that is in there that are not okay. But i know that my daughter is okay right now. Ktvu has learned the identity of the gunman as weve been telling you. Sources told us he was 38yearold jimmy lam of San Francisco. In the meantime we are learning about one of the victims who was killed in todays shooting. Tara has more on that. Tara. Reporter mike lafidi was one of those ups workers gunned down today. We understand he had suffered a previous injury and had a cast on so that made it very difficult for him to run away from the shooter ment friends and family were here at San Francisco General Hospital pretty much all day long. They only left an hour or so ago grieving obviously a lot of hugs and tears. Just simply in shock. We want o show you a photo of him. We understand he was in his mid 40s and he will be greatly missed by his coworkers, friends, and family. People who knew him describe him as somebody who not only touched family and friends but also his customers with his infectious smile. I spoke to one of his coworkers by phone. Sonny was not present during the shoot. He is actually out of town right now but he shared his thoughts about lafichl di. He was a very love bl guy. Very a bright smile. Every time you see him, you want to smile. Just a loud guy that, you know, everyone just lod. Even his customers loved him. He was like a big teddy bear. Everyone knew him on his route. If you would have met him, you would have loved him. Reporter he was shot three times. Were told once in the neck. He died here at the hospital. He leaves behind his wife danielle and six children. Friends say that he was a big 49ers fan and a giants fan. Unfortunately his family is no stranger to brief. His two brothers both died over the past 12 years or so. So, this is a fm lee that really has had to struggle with loss. I also asked son ee about jimmy lam. He said he was a man who was quiet and kept to himself. Obviously well be learning more about lam in the days to come. I know this just happened just a few hours ago, its still very frech. Im just wondering if the families, the victims, the employees at ups have been talking, anything about some kind of a vigil or something to kind of it seems like they are a work family. They are all very tightly connected in that regard. Are they doing anything together, any plans for that, or is it just too early i think its just too early right now. They are a very large family, very tight knit. As i mentioned theyve gone through their share of tragedy. I was able to speak to his niece here today. She had tears in her eyes. She said, you know, i just dont really feel like talking right now. You know, weve been we have been keeping our distance from all of the family members because this is such a difficult time. And sometimes people want to talk, they find that very therapeutic and to let people know who lafidi was. But others its just too much too soon. We will obviously be staying on top of this and we will let you know if we hear anything about a vigil. And also the two other people who died in this draj tee. Tragedy. We do have their names but we havent leasing them at this time because their families havent been officially notified. I know the investigation is still ongoing, but what can you tell us about those that are injured and the extent of their injuries. Reporter we do know that there were two people who were shot, and i am told that one of them was shot in the arm, one of them was shot in the leg. One of those people actually walked to the hospital. You know, were very close to where the shooting happened. So, at the beginning, there was a lot of confusion. People didnt know how many victims there were. And i think there was a big delay and why police werent saying much to us for twoandahalf hours after the thoot shooting, because they simply didnt have a number. They didnt know if perhaps more people had walked into the hospital. I am told that one of those people did leave the hospital earlier today. The other one, im not sure if they are still here or not. Violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society and i condemn in action in the strongest possible terms. The Student Newspaper captured photos of the damage. The school has only one supply clerk and a substitute custodian who would be left to clean it up. The principal took action. While the under class men waited outside the seniors were called to the gym and told them they all needed to step up and clean up. Ultimately all 450 of them did. We have pride in this group of teenagers who stepped up without complaints and cleaned up their campus. Reporter they cleaned up trash scrubbed paint off the walls and ground. They knew that even though it wasnt their fault it was their responsibility to clean up the community because it does leave an image on our graduating senior class. Reporter there were 40 or 50 students responsible for the damage and since they havent been able to pinpoint who did what all will receive the same punishment. They wont get to take home their de diploma as after fridays graduation. They will walk across the stage but they will come back to the school on monday and tuesday and perform Community Service for the school. Reporter some teachers who asked to be identified didnt think the punishment was harsh enough. Still many of the students say they already learned their lesson. Ive seen officers Walking Around the perimeter taking notes. We have been out here from a little bit after the scene happened. At the top of the scene is what weve seen earlier, the 17th and bruno much thats where the two bodies were found. Investigators will construct the scene to figure out exactly the details of the shooting. This all started just before nine this morning. Were told the ups drivers were inside a meeting when shots were fired this morning. Six people were shot. Four of them including the dead, who killed himself when he was encountered by police. Sources cell ktvu the gunmans name is jimmy lam. He is a San Francisco resident. Again, two people were shot outside. They were on 17th street near san bruno. The victims and the shooter rm transported to the hospital where they were pronounced dead. They will conduct hundreds of interviews including people that were victims and their families. We are going to have to reconstruct that entire scene. Thats why crime scene investigators are on scene right now. Thats why its crucial to get the statements so we can reconstruct what happened moment by hoement. Reporter i meant to say victims, families and sources will be talked to. Officers secured the building allowing workers to go back inside to get their personal items. We also learned that five other people were injured. Once again back out here live, we know that investigators will be working throughout the night and probably the next few days trying to figure out exactly what caused lam to cause this shooting spree. Police will talk to hundreds of witnesses including witnesses that were inn n the scene and also the victims family. A lot of work ahead for police. Reporter we can tell you we are in the Inner Richmond here in front of a home thats listed for a jimmy lam. There was heavy Police Presence here on the 300block of 4th avenue. It was around 3 30 this afternoon that we saw police leaving this home with bags of evidence. They were carrying a computer tower as well as filings of boxes that they believed to come from the home possibly owned by lam. The evidence put in the back of trunks and then the cars drove off. Neighbors told us that lam was a very quiet person, a low key guy and are really shocked by whats happened today. Its really creepy that people next door have the ability to have guns and shoot people that they work with. I dont feel safe. Very safe for the people who got killed but its very shock to see something that you never expect. Reporter sources tell us that lam worked at ups since 1999. The 38yearold was also described by coworkers as a quiet man. Although police are not con pirming that he was the shooter, we did hear his name on Police Dispatch audio logs as this unfolded earlier today. Take a listen. All staff please respond to the ups building. The suspect is an employee, jimmy lam. All staff respond to ups building. Reporter you can just imagine how scary it was for all of those workers inside the ups building. We fond out that a group of ups employees ran outside and jumped on the bus urging the driver to take off so they could escape that area. We know that that bus driver took employees a couple of blocks away before she alerted authorities much the big question is what is the motive behind this shooting. That is something thats still unanswered at this hour. We understand that lam was upset with his coworkers at the time he opened fire. We dont know that hes a disgruntled employee, if there are some issues that he had. We are going to continue to look into lams background and bring you an update. There was a massive response by police and other First Responders as that active shooter situation unfolded in the city. Reporter the first to respond were Tactical Unit Police Officers whose facility is just a few blocks away from the ups building. Within two minutes of the first reports of shot fired, the Police Dispatchers were already signaling that the shooter already had topped according to the rp, the reporting fires. Several have been shot. This is in the ups building. There are several people that were shotting. The shooter is goa. Reporter nobody was willing to risk further lives just in case the shooter had partners. They should all shelter in place, a ferm tif. Its been contained but thats not a bad idea. Reporter just last week, the sfpd, the sf fire department, paramedics and a host of other First Responders went through an active Shooter Training drill to make sure they could coordinate efforts when the real thing happens. Training for situations like this which occurred today and it proved that the training was successful. They put that training to use today. They went in and they rescued victims. Reporter the fact is though the mayor and the Police Officers union are off n at odds over many things, especially staffing equipment and non lethal suspect suppression methods, everyone seems to agree that all of the First Responders in a coordinated way did their jobs way.
