Reporter doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers gathered outside San Francisco general hospital, charging the psychiatric unit is in a state of emergency. That means that people that are having mental crises, like suicidal ideations, theyre hallucinating or hearing voices and theyre schists 0 phrenic, having severe depression, they need to be sent to another hospital. Reporter Jeanette Conley says the unit frequently diverts because of staffing shortages. She says often emergency patients cant get admitted to the hospital because there is no room, leading to patients going undertreated or not treated at all. These patients a lot of times come from the tent cities, from different areas in the city. Reporter the rally was organized by the union 1021 which is negotiating a new contract. The union says this past january the psychiatric unit was diverting patients to other hospitals 34 of the time, double what it was the previous year. The patients that are stuck in the psych emergency room cant move up to the psych floors because the floors are full, and the floors cant discharge the patients to proper placement due to the lack of beds. Nurses say there are also shortages in the emergency room. They say they fear when this new er opens next month they will be forced to treat more patients but with the same amount of staff. Were Holding Patients in the Emergency Department longer than we need to be holding them in the Emergency Department when they should be going upstairs into the hospital but we dont have the staff to admit those patients. Reporter the San FranciscoPublic Health department issued a statement disputing the Psychiatric Care is in a state of emergency. Today the menlo park fair district finally dedicated a new state of the art fire station. Station number 2 now open for business on University Avenue in east palo alto. Its a 12,000squarefoot station thats almost three times the size of the station it replaces. It includes a number of upgrades including individual sleeping quarters, a huge kitchen, solar panels, a shake alert for earthquakes, and many more features to help firefighters do their job. The chief says the project began before the recession but due to a lack of funding construction had to be done in phases. We didnt get stimulus funds which we would have like to have had. We asked for 5 million. The reality is we took a different tactic which was to do it incrementally. It tack us longer but theres no debt for the station. The station completely paid off. The project included the purchase of two properties next to the former fire station. The total cost was about 12 million. Members of the public can check it out during an open house this saturday from 11 00 to 2 00 p. M. The state of california wants pg e to pay 90 million to cal fire to compensate for pg es role in that devastating butte fire last fall. Ktvus tom vacar tells us why the state feels it is entitled to so much money. Reporter on the afternoon of last september 9th what would be called the butte fire exploded in Amador County just east of the gold rush town of jackson. The fire raged for three weeks in amador in calaveras county, incinerating nearly 900 structures including 500 homes. It killed two people. In all, the butte fire destroyed 450 million in property. Whether its a utility, a private business, or a residence, if you are negligently found to have started a fire, you are responsible for paying back the general fund and the taxpayers for that fire. So well be working now with pg and e to recover those costs. Reporter three days after the fire started pg e announced that it believed a pine tree slouched into one of its power lines touching off the fire in steerntion rugged, and bonedry territory. Today cal fire said it would seek 90 million for its costs in fighting the fire, the largest recovery cal fire has ever sought. The state says it was pg es legal responsibility to abate that potential hazard. In this case we do believe there was negligence so we will be seeking reimbursement and to recover the cost of taxpayer dollars for well over 90 million to put out this very large and very destructive fire. Pg e issued a written statement saying we cooperated fully with cal fair in its investigation on the source of the ignition for the butte fire. A california judge has thrown out a lawsuit that sought to drain a reservoir. A judge sided with officials who strongly objected to draining the reservoir in yosemite.
