New at 6 30, Union Pacific Railroad Police and Law Enforcement teamed up to talk about rail safety and public awareness. It follows accidents like this one earlier this month in richmond. Officers righting inside a train studied how people behaved at railroad crossings. They discussed the dangers of crossing on rail and transit tracks as well as what happens when people violate rail crossing laws. We have to make sure theyre crossing at the designated places and theyre not down the tracks also and trying to cut midtrack out of the area. Freight trains traveling 55 miles an hour can take up more than a mile to stop. Todays event was part of Union Pacifics crossing accident reduction education and safety program. Police in moragga would like to place security cameras in places to help solve crimes. The city claims it cant afford the cameras. In what may be a first, residents are trying to help police by coming up with the money themselves. Rob roth has this report. Reporter you might think a town as affluent as moraga could afford more than this one surveillance camera. But earn thats not the case. The city does not have the money to spend on this project. Reporter so some residents have launched a fundraising campaign. Theyve raised 9,000 so far. I think its says the people love the town and they want to preserve its character and feel. And this campaign is considered to be something that will benefit the town as a whole. I think i was one of the first contributors to the fund personally. Absolutely. I through in 100. Reporter the 5 additional cameras would be installed at the access routes in and out of town. It would also fund computer equipment for Police Investigations and license plate readers. Residents say they dont mind chipping in even though other communities have paid for their cameras through regular Police Budgets or grants. We just had another fundraiser for a play yard for kids with special needs. I think it raised a quarter of a Million Dollars through donation. Reporter overall, crime was down last year, but there are exceptions. Earlier this year, an elderly couple was armed at gun point outside their home and the husband thrown to the ground. The case is still under investigation, but the police chief says crime surveillance cameras could have helped. We do have crimes that occur here. A San Francisco city supervisor wants to charge a fee to Ride Sharing Companies to help ease Traffic Congestion. James kim is proposing a 20 centperride fee. There is growing concern about the effect uber and lyft drivers are having on Traffic Congestion in the city. Looking at the average of the number of rides they give, this revenue at just a mere 20 cents per ride could bring San Francisco about 27 million. The money would help Fund Public Transit and bike lanes and would help pay for studies on improving Traffic Congestion. Coming up, a second death here in the bay area from what doctors are calling a rare case of botulism. Plus what were learning about a teenager hospitalized by the disease. For the second day in a row, the Stanislaus County Sheriffs Department has laid to rest a fallen officer. Today it was Community Service officer roshell johnson. The two were killed in a car accident earlier this month on duty. Deputies all came to the service to pay their respects to the fallen officers and also to show support for the stanislaus Sheriffs Department. There are reports tonight of another deadly case of botulism in the bay area. This is unrelated to the nacho cheese sold at a gas station near sacramento. The second death happened within the last month. And stemmed from tainted canned food. Authorities would not provide any more details on the person who died. State records show only 2 reefs botulism deaths linked to food going back to 2001. A 16 year old boy who got sick from botulism from that gas station in walnut grove near sacramento is recovering at the Childrens Hospital in oakland. Johna villasenor is a sophomore. The School Principal says he is making progress. She says he was taken off a ventilator and moved from intensive care to another room. We have an important recall for parents to know about. Some 25,000graco car seats are being recalled. The Company Issued the recall today for its my ride 65 convertible seats. The seats were made in july of 2014. A San Francisco park with one of the citys most iconic views became open to the public again today. Alamo square park was closed more than a year as it went under a face lift. It is a popular spot for tourists. As part of the renovation project, the parks irrigation system was replaced which city Officials Say will save 2 and a half million gallons of water for a year. Even though the park was closed for a year, the community kept on working and this is the result. We have a Beautiful Day to celebrate. A new rain garden was also added. The renovations were paid for by park bonds approved by voters in 2008 and 2012. Another Early Morning fire in the east bay shedding light on a growing problem. The fires are making it even more so. Flames light up the predawn landscape in oakland destroying tents and personal property at a homeless encampment on the side of the freeway. The high cost of living has led to a spike in the number of people lives on the streets in oakland. Henry lee tells us its the latest in a series of fires that are raising a lot of concern. Reporter its happened again, another fire at a homeless encampment in oakland. This one broke out about 4 20 wednesday morning near downtown. Flames burned dangerously close near b. A. R. T. Tracks. The fire destroyed several tents. I smelled the fire and thats what made me start waking up. Reporter people who live in the encampment tell us a homeless resident started the fire during a dispute over a cell phone. On monday, this fire broke out near 5th and embarcadero burning again right near 880 during the morning commute. This have been other similar fires in the past couple of months. Many of the fires have been accidental. Anything from someone was cooking and their tent caught on fire to someone fell asleep and they were using a candle. But i think the fuel lode at some of the encampment ands fact that its so quick to ignite is of real concern to us. Reporter city public works crews hauled away the debris and garbage from the latest fire. This resident said everything is gone. Others came to hang out in the charred ruins. We saw this man rolling his own cigarette. Just around the corner, we caught up with [ indiscernible ] she showed us her camp stove. Its always a risk out here, but the fires are making it even more so. Maybe more so. Fire is scary. Fire takes a second and, you know hike i said, that over there last night went real fast. Reporter city leaders hope to open a new safe haven site where people could pitch tents and have access to toilets and garbage pick ups. Thats why its so important that we designate properties where we can provide people a better option. So take a look at this video here. This is a drone flying above monterey bay. Captured a rare sight of nature in action. You can see a blue whale and then a pod of orcas suddenly appear. Then the water gets turbulent as the whales are facing off. Its kind of difficult to make out, but we are told that the blue whale was able to escape that pod of orcas, incredibly, but swims at full speed on the other side of that boat. The orcas are big, but that gray whale, theyre so huge. Bill, does that usually happen . They do. And they usually dont miss. I would have thought they would come up and start bite it. They herd them. Its hard to say whats happening here. The blues can dive pretty deep, but theyre not going to outswim an orca. I thought it was a gray whale. Blue whale . Blues are the biggest. You just dont see Something Like that. We have the marine sanctuary out there. We have such beautiful look at them all just lined up. Theyre just waiting. There was a time we didnt see orcas out here throughout the 80s or 70s or 90s even. Its great to see them in captivity. Seeing blue whales up here and hump back whales, were lucky that the ecosystem is robust enough that its recovering from years and years of abuse. Start walnut grove the first settlers here, sealing and whaling, what have you. Its cooler out there. Much cooler. Temperatures dropped off way way a lot. They dropped off a lot. 75 in fairfield today. Theyre down. They were in the 90s today. Theres a low Pressure Center up north. Thats creating an environment thats going to keep us on the cool side right through the bay area weekend. Were just splitting hairs here. Were not deal walnut grove Severe Weather like they near the Central Plains and in the southeast. We just have the subtle variations that are quite pleasant, if you will. Thats why its such an expensive endeavor to live out here. You can fish year round, golf year round, almost ski year round this year. Theres the fog and the low clouds tomorrow morning. Thats why its going to be cool again tomorrow. Burns back and then you get 70s are yellows. Greens are 60s. Thats your temperature footprint for tomorrow. Right along the coast, you dont see much sun. Youre in the 50s. 59 degrees, Something Like that. The cool pattern continues as long as that low stays there and it stay there is thursday and friday. Do they just go in and attack . Thats why they got the name killer whales. We used to kayak around them. They dont mess with humans and theyre gentle and sweet, at least to humans. But when they hunt see a blue whale, there they go. Ive seen video of them theyll herd seals up on to the beach and then theyll come out of the water on the beech, halfway out and grab the seals.
