Seven degrees warmer in fairfield, so we did warm up today. And tomorrow will be very similar to what we had today. The fog is offshore at the coast, and that is keeping things kind of nice really around the bay, anyway, because we are getting some sea breeze, a temperature gradient thats blowing the cool, moist air into the bay area proper, and that is keeping things bearable. You dont need air conditioning out in richmond. We have had some thunderstorms around bear valley and mammoth and that home. Incline village, north star, they are getting popped right now just outside of truckee. So these are current. A surge of monsoonal moisture has brought thunderstorms and lightning across l. A. And ventura county. The threat of thunderstorms extends across the coastal waters through thursday. To help beat the heat in the south bay the city of san jose has five cooling centers with ex steaded hours today. The centers are locate at Community Centers around the city. They opened at 8 00 this morning and close at 9 00 tonight. Lets bring in our chief meteorologist bill martin. What do you think of the thunderstorms down there in l. A. . Are they that bad . They could get a flash flood out of it if you get right under one. Like in the mountains today we have some strong thunderstorms up around truckee, up around mammoth. Its not a long endurance event. Its more just heavy rain for 15 minutes, but you drop a quarter of an inch of rain in 15 minutes and it really creates problems. Shouldnt be anything too severe, but if you are flying that way you might see some flight delays this afternoon. These are the temperatures from today. It is hot but not as hot as in redding. Its 115 way up here in the northern valley. It gets a lot of heat up in that area. But for us weve been mostly like santa rosa today was just 95 a. 101 in concord. Everybody else, were sort of stuck between the fog and the big heat. There is a heat advisory for the Higher Elevations of the bay area. Here are the current temperatures. The purples are out there. Those are the 100s. I mean, it has been hot. It has been plus 90 degrees every day in sacramento for the month of july. Never happened since we have been recording. And you had 12 of the 100 degree days. Just an indication of how hot it is in the valley. It stays hot. It is going to be that way for awhile. There are the thunderstorms. They are dying out. Theres still some thunderstorms over incline village, over by al pain. This stuff looks like it is dying down. When we visited last it was a much more robust system. Then the fog out there, you see is it pinched down. You look at the bridge off in the distance there and you can see the fog just pushing through there big time. That fog is going to be around and keep things bearable at the coast and in the city for the next couple of days which is fortunate for us. Tomorrow afternoon, 67 in San Francisco. Oakland will be in the upper 70s, maybe low 80s. San francisco will make it to 75. The forecast, there is the fog trying to do some good but not much. Temperatures come in as hot. That is your tomorrows forecast. 100 in vacaville. 100 in fairfield. I grew up in that area, and i remember chico and those areas would get up to 111, 114. But when i saw 115 up in redding today, a halfhour ago, that is just damaging heat. Like palm springs heat. Right, yeah, it is, even more so. And on top of that down on the concrete, imagine the concrete is going to be 150 degrees. Is it a little easier, though, when it is not humid . A lot easier. But its still painful. Still hot. Thank you, bill. Trying to make one of the most dangerous intersections in San Francisco safer. It slows you down so you definitely need more time to get across. Senior citizens say crossing an a intersection in one San Francisco neighborhood is particularly scary. Ktvus rob roth was there today when they showed city leaders firsthand what they have to go through just to get across the street. Reporter for brian, crossing bayshore boulevard here can be a scary journey especially when having to use a walker. It slows you down, so you definitely need more time to get across. Reporter he was one of two dozen citizens who watched this intersection with officials to show firsthand what it is like to navigate this on foot. Its too dangerous. Reporter many of the seniors here dont speak english and have problems with the traffic signal button. They dont read english, and it is not in chinese. So they sit here and wait for the light to go walk. Reporter with all the cars, buses, and trains here, the city has labeled this one of the most dangerous intersections in the country. We invited staff here to get feedback so that when they redesign this intersection they can take into account what the seniors need to safely get across the street. Reporter San Francisco has adopted vision zero, a plan to eliminate all traffic deaths by 2024. Last year 16 pedestrians were killed in this city. 14 of them seniors. The biggest complaint here is that there is not enough time to cross the street. It sounds like an easy fix but the San Francisco mta says it isnt. It is possible. Its a very complicated intersection. Reporter there are no assurances that even after this field trip those who walk here will see longer cross times anytime soon. Theres always reasons why the cycle is this length. If they could just add three, five seconds, that would be great.
