Reporter frank, it was pretty much backed up for over a mile and a half. People basically just had to kind of slow down and kind of get off at the nearest exit and make their way, if they wanted to, using a side road to get back southbound along the 101. So there was no real alternative for drivers. If you were driving in the northbound lane, you were fine. But heading southbound, you were really out of luck. Rob, thank you. New information about a string of east bay car fires. Fire officials in Contra Costa County told us those car fires started happening before this week and they believe they are connected. Ktvus alyana gomez joins us live from Pleasant Hill where fire investigators just wrapped up an update. Reporter in the last 15, 20 minutes a fire marshal revealed that all fire of the vehicle fires discovered this week throughout Contra Costa County are related. Not only that but he also says that whoever is responsible for setting these fires may have also set other fires that have happened in the past, and theyre looking into that. The fires that were talking about include the one that happened in martinez monday, two on wednesday in walnut creek and lafayette, and two vehicle fires in brentwood this morning. All five vehicles were parked in a driveway and set on fire overnight when the owners were sleeping. As i mentioned the fire marshal says its not just the five fires from this week but they believe whoever is responsible may have set previous fires in other years. We do have more fires. We believe there are a number of fires that are related because of certain characteristics of those fires. Im not going to disclose the exact number of fires, but it is a much larger number than what you guys are reporting currently. Moving on to another story there was another car fire in the east bay, this time in orinda. Sky fox was over the scene. Right now authorities tell us this fire was likely accidental and not connected to those other car fires that alyana was updating us on as we have been reporting. An investigation is underway into a deadly shooting on Treasure Island. San Francisco Police say it happened about 5 30 last night on avenue b near 12th street. They consider this to be a homicide. They are not releasing any information on the victim except to say he was a man in his 30s. So far no avers been report. San Francisco Police announced the arrest of a ucsf psychiatrist and his roommate on child pornography charges. Police say the two were arrested at their home on buena Vista Terrace as part of the internet crimes against children unit. Investigators say lockhart was using his wifi network to upload child porn. Investigators say they discovered hundreds of videos and images containing child pornography. Ucsf released a statement on the arrest. School officials con 23eur78 those arrests and said they take the allegations seriously. They said, quote, ucsf has placed dr. Lockhart on leave from the department of psychiatrys Residency Training program, suspending all clinical activity and access to all ucsf information systems. A building at the university of San Francisco is no longer named after a former mayor would many considered to be racist. Theres been mounting criticism from and now the name will be changed. In 2015 the new Orleans City Council voted to take down the statues of the confederate leaders saying they were symbols of slavery and segregation. There are reports that the two leaders could meet face to face a early as july. Governor jerry brown released his 124 billion state budget launching a month of negotiations. The revision calls for a 1. 5 billion increase in spending. Most of that will go to k12 education. The governor also says he is withholding 50 million from the university of californias budget. That, he says, to hold their feet to the fire over an audit that found the system hid tens of millions of dollars in reserve accounts. But he declined to uc president janet napolitano. Mark, is it unusual to see big whales like that in the bay . We were covering this last year. I think last year there were actually more sightings. I think theyre just looking for food. That would startle the heck out of me if im on a bay cruise and a whale popped up. I remember last year i was doing a live report and i thought, maybe we would be lucky if we saw one. We saw about five or six within an hour. So this is just the time theyre migrating . Exactly. Probably for the next few weeks. And they go into the bay a little bit, after swim. It is chilly. So at this stage, its kind of most likely ended his career but thats not going to end what he goes on to do as a human being, as a man. The San FranciscoUnified School District has been picking up much of the tab for programs like this thanks in part to a 3. 3 million federal grant. But the grant is rung out and not being renewed this year. We knew that it was possible that a year would come when we werent awarded the grant because it is competitive across the nation. So we are losing this money. Reporter losing it beginning in the fall. Thats when parents will have to pay anywhere from 50 to 500 to enroll in afterSchool Programs depending on income levels. Parents say its already enough of a financial struck ghoul to live in San Francisco. Its a little discon sergt what thats going to mean to us and other families that are trying to make it. Reporter students at the lowest economic levels will not have to pay. Everyone else will. The School District hopes it wont mean parents pull their kids out. They included a dance formation in the shape of a swastika and nazi salutes in the hallway. Some students also say theyve been shoved and pushed. On monday School Officials held an assembly, and police say theyre conducting a full investigation with the help of the piedmont district. Were in the process of reaching out and interviewing students. Weve also been briefed on the interviews that the School District has conducted and been made privy to the content of those interviews, and well be using those as a basis to move forward with our own investigation. Theres no word on how Many High School students in piedmont were suspended. As repairs to the oroville dam continue officials are questioning the structures safety. Discussions took flies today. Assembly member James Gallagher says while the dwr reacted well to the crisis, hes Still Critical of the repairs. On the site once outcome paid by sin bads restaurant officials broke ground for two more great big ferry docks that began operation in 2019. Except for golden gate ferries most are operated by the water emergency transportation authority. Established nine years ago to provide Passenger Service and if necessary emergency transportation in the event of natural disaster, even bart strikes. This is another huge step in something very big and badly needed. Wavy Strategic Plan that would basically triple the amount of Ferry Service that we operate today and help to relieve that congestion on the bridges and in downtown San Francisco. Reporter even for those who never ever ride a ferry, theres something in it for them. We have already doubled the size of the system to 2. 5 million passengers for year. If we could double it again we could relieve about a lane and a half of congestion on the bay bridge during the peak hours. Reporter its a chance to have whats called the columbus day freewayesque every day. Not everybody has columbus day off as a holiday but enough people have columbus day off that you see a noticeable decline in congestion. And just reducing the demand on the roadway by 5 , say, can yield a 40 or even 50 decline in congestion. Reporter by 203544 water emergency ferries will serve 16 terminals spread from Silicon Valley to the straits, instead of six. Routes will triple to 12 including routes other than to the terminal. Daily raiders will increase five fold to 38,000. In fact, the cost of implementing an expanded ferry system is consider anably less. Reporter more ferries, the less chance of an incident on another Transportation System, say a car crash on a bridge, a bart. Each system can back up the other to the greatest degree possible. Reporter now at the peak of the bay area Ferry Service that was before the bridges were built, 55 Million People used the San Francisco bays ferry system every year. Officials say at least 15 juvenile great whites were spotted in the water there Capistrano Beach to san onofre beach. I wouldnt invade their territory because i dont want to be their food. The Long Beach Fire Department earlier this week lifted an advisory put in place over the weekend, but after more than a dozen juveniles were spotted, those signs went right back up. If you see a sign like that would you go in the water . No, i wouldnt go in the water. It says enter at your own risk, you know. So i say, nope, i wont go in the water. Reporter the chopper spotted several near Capistrano Beach yesterday. We count at least seven shots in this seven sharks in this shot alone. Lots of shark sightings but at the end of the day they are native to the region. Despite the sightings the beaches will stay open. Thats right, they do live in the water. Theyre there. It happens all the time. But when you see it, its just a little dont go in the water. Mark, youre a big surfer. Whats the closest youve been . I dont think ive been close to one. You havent seen one . Bill, i think has. Sometimes you hear about a shark sighting out there, and its always you get that numbing feeling almost when youre in the ocean and youre hearing about it, so you just paddle in, but the time goes by so slow. I can imagine. A few years ago there was a professional surfing contest, guys from all over the world. There was a dolphin sighting out there, but the serve thought it was a shark. Stop in middle of the contest he paddled in because he was so just thought, forget the heat. Err on the side of caution. Those are actually juvenile sharks, too. They are, really . Yes, the Contra Costa County fire marshal has revealed that all five vehicle fires that happened and were discovered this week throughout Contra Costa County are all related. Not only that but theyre also saying that they believe whoever is responsible for the fires has also set other fires in the past. We want to recap the five vehicle fires that have happened. One of them happened monday in martinez. Two others were wednesday, one in walnut creek, the other in lafayette. The two vehicle fires that were discovered inbrentwood this morning. All five of those were parked in a driveway and set on fire overnight when the owners were sleeping. As i mentioned the fire marshal alluded to the fact that its not just five fires. They believe whoever is responsible has set other fires, maybe date aing back to 201. We do believe there are a number of fires that are all related because of certain characteristics of those fires. I am not going to disclose the exact number of fires but it is a much larger number than what you guys are reporting currently. Reporter now, most people may think that these are just car fires, but these can actually be very dangerous if not caught soon enough. In fact, in one of the fires that happened in brentwood the car that was engulfed in flames was parked in a driveway right below the bedroom of two children where they were sleeping, and that car, when it caught fire, it spread to the garage, and it was caught, thankfully, just in time before it spread to their bedroom.
