The spillway we open this morning to make room for water flowing into the lake. Heres the story. All eyes were on the orval main spillway friday morning. This was the moment of truth. Water gushing out of the gates for the First Time Since march 27. Since the emergency in february the California Department of Water Resources and their partners have worked in 24 hour shifts clearing up more than 1. 6 million cubic yards of debris and patching up the spillway foundation and reinforcing rebar. The hope is that all of that work will help water be released from the reservoir. The department of Water Resources says the main spillway will be looking like this for the next 10 to 14 days. The goal is to reduce the water level in the dam significantly. Lake orvilles water level was at 865 feet. By the end of this round they hope to get it to a comfortable 800 to 35 of the maximum 901 feet. Thats what it was in february when they were forced to open up the emergency spillway while water pours out of the main spillway the next few days the high power plant gets arrest. Staff will perform maintenance on it so that by summer it can work overtime. By then they hope the main spillway wont just get a repair but be well on its way to a full replacement.
