That traffic is just terrible in the north bay right now. Julie as you mentioned if you need to head in that area in the north bay it is probably best to stay out of the area or find an alternative moment. Is there a place for residence to go if they could not go to that area . Can they get information on the fire . You know typically theres a number set up to call to get information at this point. But im not sure what that number is, but that we do know that people are being asked to avoid that area right now. All right, Cristina Rendon in the newsroom. Thank you. Major traffic problems will continue tonight on the Richmond San Rafael bridge. A truck fire this morning shut down all lanes of traffic heading into the east bay from marin county. Tonight after eight hours, those lanes are still shut down. Here is a look at what traffic looks like right now in the area as you can see that the richmond bridge, that there is a part of it that is purple, which means that it is closed. You can see them back thereupon with all the red in san rafael. Tom vacar is on the marin county side of the bridge near san quinton. This is always an issue because it has to do with not just the truck catching on fire. That is a pretty serious fire. But after the truck is cleared off, then what they have to do is check the structure of the bridge to see if there is damage to the concrete or the pavement as they have to relace that because a bunch of cars were teared up very quickly, creating a hazardous situation. Thats whats taking all the time as were in the clean up phase. And the estimate is anywhere from six to eight, closer to six i believe, but the estimate is anywhere from six to eight as i want to show you these. They had this task of trying to tell people that you cannot get on the freeway here. If you look over here what they are forcing them to do is that they are requiring them to make the left turn on to anderson to go right back into san rafael. Now i want to show you Something Else here. That youre going to see some cars lined up. Right behind that horse there that construction horse and that those cars have been sitting there, some of them for more than an hour waiting for the bridge to open as they could be sitting there easily for another hour. That they could be sitting there for another two to three hours in those situations. Here is this officer over here to the right who has had to do this for the 4th or 5th car to tell people that they cannot get on the bridge and that there are ways to go pack north on the 101, which has their own problems to the 37 that is jammed or go back through the city, which is always a nightmare, especially during rush hour. Thats the situation with these people coming up. Most of them off the 101, hoping to get on the bridge. Apparently that they were listening to the radio because the radio would have said that this is not a deal that you could make right now. But here they are. Now the other cars, theyre going the other way coming off the Richmond San Rafael bridge because of the westbound move that is okay. That is open and working fine. But the eastbound, the lower deck is not fine and the situation is that we have to deal with all of this traffic. Thats the situation right now as were going to move to the other location at 6 00 to show you whats going on there, but it is suffice to say a nightmare commute. All right, tom vacar, near the Richmond San Rafael bridge on the marin county side tonight where the lower deck of the Richmond San Rafael is still closed because of a fire earlier this morning. Tom, thank you. Now here is a look at traffic on the Golden Gate Bridge. This is looking north from the San Francisco side of the bridge. Traffic is is moving fine in that direction with a lot of fog out there though. The car is heading into San Francisco and there was some concern as tom was mentioning because that would be one of the alternate routes to get around. The situation there on the richmond and san rafael bridge has traffic moving pretty well there heading into the city. The bay bridge with a much clearer picture here as you can see the bay bridge toll plaza. Absolutely no problems here as people are heading into the city moving clearly through this area at the bay bridge toll plaza. All right now to developing news in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Thats where the fire is burning near loma prieta. It is an eerie view this morning where the orange flames were glowing in the dark. And that the fire started yesterday afternoon and they have now burned 1,500 acres, only 5 contained. Officials say that right now 300 homes are still threatened. As the sun came out, you can see just how close the flames were burning to some homes in the area. The giant flames surrounded one home, the firefighters are battling from the ground while planes are dropping fire retardant from overhead. Ktvu south bay reporter jesse gary is live now in the santa clara mountains with more on the front line of this fire. Jesse . Reporter julie, those ferocious flames you mentioned continue to burn down the side of the hillside here near summit road. You can see just over my shoulder the plume of smoke thats in the air just above those tree tops. This fire continues to burn and burn well. It is not good for the environment and not too good for the tv equipment as well. Some of our equipment that were used to broadcast the station up on the mountain top and that it was interfered with the damage because of the fire. So we had to move down summit road to more of a level of location to bring you the signal. Let me show you whats on my jacket these speckles of pink is all from the most recent drop of fire retardant. Lets go ahead and take a look at our video as firefighters are using aerial drops of helicopters, cut around the dirt ring of the ground area. And crews with hoses trying to halt the flames. Since the fire started yesterday afternoon, now 1,500 acres burn. One structure destroyed and another damaged. A short time ago we found friends and relatives trying to evacuate some residence who would try to wait out the flames only to surrender to the flames and a good sense. And we gave that up last night that it wasnt that far last night. And that we drove right past here last night that none of this was burned. Up along the hillside. You thought you would have time because the fire wasnt here . Yeah. You can see how far it has spread. Reporter it will continue to spread there. They are using hand tools to cut a defensive space around summit road. So similar to a firefighter telling you to keep defensible area around your house to make sure that the vegetation doesnt go up on your properties. They are cutting back the vegetation away from the roadway. Maybe two to three feet for about a quarter to half a mile on where you see those pictures taken down the road to try to provide a defensible space. And they are doing that because they want to make sure if the flames actually do come up the hillside that they will not get up the roadway and able to jump across the roadway. Well update you on those hours. Live in the Santa Cruz Mountains jesse gary ktvu fox 2 news. Thank you. As jesse showed us, weather is helping the crews a little bit there in the south bay as we also saw the picture from the Golden Gate Bridge just a moment ago. What do you think that the conditions will be like tonight and into the coming days . The trend is for cooling as that cannot hurt firefighters. The humidity is coming up, temperatures are coming down over the next few days. Very helpful. The problem with that especially the loma prieta fire we are looking at increasing the wind speeds increasing the moisture to cool the temperatures. But they also create a wind in the fire zone. Here are some pictures from today and yesterday too. These are from today. But yesterday i was watching some of the pictures come in live and today that fuel is so dry as these flames are 50 to 100 feet in the air consuming pine trees in a rapid rate. Structures are in danger. Some small communities will be staying down there on the east side of the hills, evacuated. Theyve evacuated a huge building. The fire conditions are going to get better, but the winds could pick up, which could be problems for teaches. 5 containment now, but it appears that the ridgelines are doing okay. The fire is not work its way back down to the west. But you get the idea that it is just try around here with the three days of the executive heat advisories, then boom fire. Then today boom fire. Things are going to shift now instead of three to four days of very warm and hot temperatures, were going to get into three to four days as youll see it in the fiveday forecast of much cooler day time temperatures, which will help greatly in all fires, not just this fire because we would have a number of fires burning in the state right now. Frank mentioned it, the fog is back. Things are trending the other way with a cooling trend. Ill tell you what to expect as we head into your bay area wednesday. Look for Fire Fighting and for just moving around the bay area. It is a real robbery at first and then they saw the gun. Yeah, but this was no joke. Coming up at 5 30 hear from the couple that were followed home from the grocery store. Then beaten, robbed and the woman was shot twice. And also ahead experts have had time to dikes fact check, and replay every moment from last nights president ial debate. So is there a clear winner . How the candidates spent the day after. Michael fahy was out on the street evacuating residence when that explosion happened. He was struck by falling debris. Nine other firefighters, six police officers, five other people were injured in that blast. Investigators say what is believed to be an Illegal Drug Lab was found inside that home. After their first headto head debate they are back on the campaign trail. Both saying that they won. Fox News ReporterLauren Blanchard is live with the latest on the white house. Did anybody see that debate last night . One down, two to go. Reporter the day after the debate both Hillary Clinton and donald trump claiming victory. We won almost every single poll, cbs and time magazine. Reporter the nominees knocking each others debate performance. Today in North Carolina clinton saying trump didnt show up ready. He made it very clear that he didnt prepare for that debate. You know at one point he was kind of digging me for spending time off the campaign trail for getting prepared, trying to keep track of everything that he said took a lot of time and effort. Reporter trump saying clinton didnt have a strong start. I thought she was very bad in the first half when they were asking normal questions. When they were asking unfair questions she got better. Reporter trump also complaining about his podium mic giving clinton the chance to take a shot. I had a problem with the microphone that didnt work. I dont know if you saw that in the room, but my microphone was terrible. I wonder if it was set up that way on purpose. Reporter this debate is the most watched in u. S. History with more than 80 Million People tuning in on tvs and millions more on their computers. But for context, that is still far less than the average super bowl. In washington Lauren Blanchard fox news. To learn more about this is our political analyst brian silble. It looked like Hillary Clinton had a little extra pep in her step, but with donald trump if you looked at the body language he knew he missed some opportunities and he could have done better. I think so as you accurately described it. I think that she felt very good about the debate. She knew almost instantaneously that she had done better than trump in the debate. I think that trump had to go back and rethink things. Now a lot of the polls, you know, they showed that he had done well. But you know thats when people are kind of, you know, in the middle of it. Pretty soon they start thinking about it and they say wait a minute, im balanced over the night she did very well. And how important are the first 48 hours after the debate in huge because that is when everybody is putting their spin on it and that is why they have a socalled spin room where everybody jumps in and talks to the media, they try to convince the reporters of what they didnt see. Or what they have seen. And 48 hours is important, but it recedes, it tends to recede and we have the cases where say kennedy, nixon, where it was decisive. But in later years that it hasnt been quite as decisive and that they will need to debate it for three times. You have about 80 Million People watching this and it is a huge audience for supporters for trump and their minds that probably werent changed, but you do have a group of independent voters. Do you think that last night changed any of their minds . What would happen with the independent voters is that they would still lean a certain way. And probably wherever they were leaning, you know, that this would help convince them that they are leaning in a certain direction and the right way to go. But you know for last night, now we still have some time before the time reopens and everybody will be here across the nation, we will see what happens. Where did they go from here . And what should your advisors be telling you . I think for Hillary Clinton, stay the course, continue to stay on top of the facts, that she was very good last night on the facts. I think that for donald trump and room for improvement that hell need to really get into a room and start thinking things through. But for 90 minutes, that it is a long time when they started to run out of gas and things to say that they started off very strong and then towards the end it felt like their answers were not focused, meandering all over the place and quite surprised that he didnt have a better answer for the tax issues, whether they released their tax return and for that birther issue as they needed to prepare for both of those questions and that yet his answers, that i think that most people, they would need to say that we are pretty weak. The other thing that i think that they could say, you know, for the first 30 minutes, kind of the wheel house, you know, a trade in these economic issues. But when they started moving away and when they heard them start asking that unfarce and it changed, i mean, come on. And what it was, that when they moved out of their wheel house that they didnt have the substance that they did not have the data, the preparation that was required. Now, having said that, for people that follow trump that it wasnt the end of the day. And that is who they are. But that there were opportunities like libya and benghazi and they didnt grab and go like they could have. And they would have opportunities, you know, you served it up. He didnt hit the ball. I imagine that well see a different donald trump in the second debate, also the town hall. Yes, they have to or it will be very impactful. Brian, thank you. Well see you again at 6 00. Yes. And hey we are tracking the weather out there as it is definitely a cooler day, especially in the north bay as you were noticing it the most as they were dropping down a good 5 to 8 degrees out there. You can see the smoke from this fire and that it is basically the loma prieta fire that continues to burn and aggressively burns in that traindriven fire and that they are not an issue right now, but the humidity has come up a little bit, coming down just a little bit. But as we would look at their current numbers, 97 in fairfield and livermore. And that these temperatures, they are in the lower 100s for the next couple of days with the heat advisory the last couple of days, look at how much cooler it is. Minus 11. Napa at minus 14. And with that onshore flow developing, the fog is at the coast. All you need to do is look to the west as you can see that and in the fire zone now down by loma prieta you are about 90 degrees or so with the humidity coming up to 22 and the winds are relatively light. This will change those temperatures just a little bit more tonight and that humidity will come up, but the winds will increase as we will keep you out. The good news and the bad news for the firefighters up there. Of course in petaluma, we had a fire well under control. 38 humidity, 85 degrees, not really horrible fire conditions for the firefighters here. But theres the fog forecast for tomorrow morning. It is back and that is good. The temperatures are going to start to cool off a little bit as you can see it here, all the yellows. The reds are 90. And that is moving to the east of us. Most of us tomorrow, 80s, even in the hot spots like livermore and danville 89, 90 degrees. Instead of 101, 102. So today was warm and hot and now we are getting rid of this low Pressure Center or the High Pressure low that will come in as we will peak on those temperatures basically yesterday and now we are trending back down as we head into tuesday, wednesday, thursday. And on friday, significant cool down. The forecast highs for you tomorrow reflect that cool down. 89 in brentwood and antioch. Again like we said not 102 or 101, but you know the spare the air day. Well it might be spare the air day with the air quality in the southern Santa Clara Valley because of all the smoke from the loma prieta fire. We will be tracking that for the air quality that will be moving from about san jose south into morgan hill and gilroy and salinas. Not really good because from that ground level ozone that youre breathing that in. And it is actually dropping the smoke into the kind of area due east and a little bit south. So thats out of our area, but definitely causing some issues for folks in morgan hill and gilroy. We will keep you posted. But the idea here is that the real heat is over. Weve had our bunch of days in a row and our fires. Now were going to get a chance to cool off and that it will put that lid on these fires that have been pumping out. All to catch up. Yes, it really is, just like clock work as you were saying, going along just a couple of days of the really hot weather as you would see how critical that it is. It has been my experience in 30 years. Its not a textbook, but i just know that they would get three days of heat. Yes, we do. Bill, thank you. Still to come here, kevin durant, clay thompson, draymond green, they all won gold medals together at the reno rio olympics. Together for the first time look at that kevin durant hitting the practice floor with his warriors jersey on. Up next even super stars get a little anxious on their first day. So it is so hard to believe that after their record breaking season that they could be better this year. But that is the case when you add their super star to the team. Today he took to the court for the first practice of the year. And the way they started last year that it is all about those numbers getting to the record starts and their regular season winning streak or their record i should say that i dont think that they would care about that with one goal that will take care of it now. It reminds you of the 1980 and their super bowl bust. This is the nba championship or a disappointment. Go big or go home. A big margin for error. And there is not a single aspect of the warriors that will not be under their microscope this season and their First Official practice that is no exception. The cavaliers are their nba champions. Theyve been to the last two finals. But today, they represent the three most nba players on the same warrior practice floor. Kevin durant has been to the first day of practice, nine previous years, always Something Special about the first day. And that i went through it this morning, all ready to go. Everybody thinks that they would have a chance to do something about it. And anything less than winning it all, it is a disappointment. And what about those expectations . Im afraid of them and i would rather have a lousy team. No one is expecting anything. We are kind of used to it and maybe they are higher this year. Thats the way you want it as you want to reach high, and you want to achieve Something Special. Whatever happens, happens. We are going for it. Reporter one thing that you will not hear, the shiniest new guy on the court. But you will never hear from it from them. One of the things that you will be excited about it, the different lives to get out there, the the different play calls and those people to try to execute. Really remind myself of that every day. Every day you need to learn about something. I wasnt used to that. And that it is a little bit different. But it is all the same. I learned over the past nine years, im looking forward to keep going for the 10th season. They will get started for the first preseason game this saturday in toronto. They will open their regular season game at home. It doesnt matter where you are. Thank you, joe. Sure. And on your side that they would trigger it, that it will be wise. That is clearly what they brought. One of the suspects of the double murder case would testify it all. They are lying to save their own skin. The latest drift in the murder case. Major traffic problems are finally coming to the end on the san rafael bridge. A truck fire shut down all lanes of traffic heading into the east bay for marin county. Eight hours later, those lanes on the lower deck are finally reopening. Tom vacar is on the marin county side of the bridge tonight. What a mess that it has been and finally some good news for the drivers there, tom . Yes, it was eight hours and 21 minutes that the bridge was closed. But what youre seeing is traffic entering from the san quinton entrance on tot eastbound lanes of the 580 going towards richmond and of course to the east bay. And the situation, it was unclear that they thought that this will be going to 8 00 and until recently that they were advising some people that it was the case. In many cases what happened was that we want to show you something just coming down the freeway now is the next contingency of the cars they let on, fully opening up by the chp officer and now that you really need to see the full portion of what is going on. The bridge, it is open. The repairs are done. And hopefully that we will not be seeing Something Like this for a long time. Thats the situation here, frank. Back to you. Tom, why did it take so long to reopen the bridge . Did they need to sure it to make sure it was structurally sound . Yeah a major fire. There was a lot of heat generated. What youll have to make sure are two things. Number one the structural issues that youll have to deal with. More importantly and more likely that you dont have those issues with the pavement because when they get onto the pavement it will be the enemy of the concrete and they will cause them to break up and cause it to become brittle. The last thing you want to do is get a bunch of those cars flying over the bridge. And then start carrying up the pavement. Because at some point in time that pavement will become very dangerous to have more accidents up there. So they had to do that. It took a long time to remove the truck. Of course it takes a long time to do all these inspections, although some people would argue that there needs to be a better system. Im sure that they would look at that and they felt that they did the best that they could, but we will check into it. Eight hours and 21 minutes later at least during a part of the rush, that this is over because it is the rush hour direction to save the least on the Richmond San Rafael bridge going to the east. All right tom vacar in marin county tonight near their Richmond San Rafael bridge. Thank you. An east bay couple was beaten, robbed, and shot outside their home. At first they thought it was a joke when two men, they were wearing halloweenstyle mask approached them. Ktvu Paul Chambers spoke to one of the victims joining us outside the Police Department with the very latest on the investigation. Paul . Reporter julie, police are looking for the two men they say that they beat, robbed, and shot and wounded when the school board here pistol whipped her husband. Reporter and they were so shaken, you know, nobody expressed this. Reporter the 63yearold and his wife 70yearold carol brown were outside their home. A place that should be safe when they were attacked on monday night. And i was unloading my stuff from that back of the car and carol was standing in front of that area waiting for me to come in and that this guy comes up to me. Then meanwhile this guy, he sort of jumped around on those stairs and went after carol. Reporter the men said to them to give it up, so he gave him his wallet. Despite that the suspect hit him with a gun. I told them to call the police and somewhere in there carol was getting shot that i dont remember the exact same sequence. Reporter they said that they picked them up from bart and then went to safeway before coming home. Moments later, the armed men approached them. They were wearing masks, they were shorter than me and taller than carol and that they moved like young men definitely male, not even sure of the ethnicity. My parents at first thought it was a joke like maybe me and a friend or something. They didnt really think that it was a real robbery at first. But then they had saw the guns. Reporter his wife still thought it was a joke as she fought to keep her purse. The armed suspect shot her two times, once through the pelvis and the upper arm. When Police Arrived the suspect had already run off. Police say that it is too soon to say if they were targeted or a random shooting. It doesnt happen very much here as we are still safe. But it doesnt mean that we let our guard down as we remain vigilant and we are aware of our surroundings. Reporter now police, they say that some of the items that the gunman took with them are leading them to be able to track them. They say that the wife is doing well and it will take three to six months for her to recover as she may lose some mobility in her arm, already back at work doing some things for the school board as she is also trying to walk. Julie . Do they think that she was targeted because she is on the school board . Back up from that world targeted as they are not sure if it was targeted or random, but they believe it is the possibility that they started at the safeway and bart and that they may have gone along in that sense, but as of right now we want to stay away from the word targeted, but also possible that it is raining. All right Paul Chambers in orinda tonight, thank you, paul. We all remember kate stilich who was killed on the pier. Right in front of her father. The and the gun that was use was stolen from Law Enforcement. Henry lee tells us what lawmakers are doing now to try to keep more guns from being taken from Law Enforcement. Reporter kate steinly was shot dead in San Francisco with a gun taken from a federal bureau of Land Management rangers car. Antonio ramos was shot and killed while painting an anti violence mural in oakland. That gun was stolen from an immigration and custom enforcements car. This week governor jerry brown signed a few bill that no longer Exempts Police officers from securing their weapons in a lock box or in the trunk. A violation of the law is an infraction with fines of up to 1,000. Because there is no excuse for them losing guns. Reporter jerry hill introduced the bill that goes into effect january. It pretty much now covers everyone. Citizens, private citizens are covered and now any Law Enforcement officer would be subject to the legislation. Reporter hill says that Law Enforcement should know better than to leave guns exposed. When a gun is stolen from Law Enforcement, the ending is never going to be good because they get into the black market. Gang members are using them, people are using them in the commission of crimes. Reporter people like Juan Francisco lopezsanchez who was in the country illegally when he allegedly shot and killed kate steinly on pier 14 or marquise holloway who shot and killed Antonio Ramos the muralist. Elsewhere in the bay area fbi agents have had guns stolen from cars at benicia and San Francisco. Guns have also been stolen from vehicles used by the chp, hayward police, even the Uc Berkeley Police chief. Attorney frank pietry represents the family of both kate steinly and Antonio Ramos calling stolen police guns a growing epidemic. A similar bill introduced this month by the congressman would close these loopholes in federal law. Henry lee ktvu fox 2 news. The man who threw the pie into the sacramento mayors face says he wouldnt do it again. Coming up why the mayor is also defending himself tonight. Also ahead he is now a key witness against two friends in a double murder case. Today the first time he testified against them. Man charged of assaulting the mayor with a pie in the face is back in court today. Shawn thompson is facing a simple misdemeanor. That he did not enter that plea today. He said he wanted to embarrass the mayor Kevin Johnson over their handling of the homeless in sacramento. Witnesses say that the mayor then punched thompson in the face. Thompson says that he does not intend to repeat his active protest. And what i meant is that they would not take it back, but i wouldnt go back out there to do it again now. When they come up behind you and they slug you that in my case they didnt know what it was at that time, they thought it was a punch, but you have the right to defend yourself. Reporter the attorney said that their client is still considering a civil suit against the mayor. Thompson is expected back in court on october 20. Chilling new details emerge today in the preliminary hearing against two drifters that are charged with murdering two people in San Francisco and marin county last year. That preliminary hearing is like a precursor to a trial. Ktvu rob roth was in the courtroom when a third drifter testified against his alleged accomplices. And inside marin county courthouse today, the self confessed methamphetamine dealer became emotional as he described how he and twoaccomplices shot and killed two people during a drug infused crime spree last year. Angold the key witness in the preliminary hearing for the two former friends, Lila Alligood and Morrison Lampley both charged with double murder. Angold already pleaded guilty to seconddegree murder in exchange for testifying against the other two. Outside court they said that angold was not telling the truth. And he is lying to save his skin. Reporter they testified that they first met and befriended the 23yearold canadian tourist audrey carey. But before long he and lampley hatched up a plan luring her to the park where alligood tackled carey and straddled her to the chest. Beginning crying when they encountered what happened next to carey. I heard mr. Lampley say shut up or ill kill you as she said just kill me then. Then i heard a pop. I said what the hell . He said that she is dead, dude, dont worry about it. Angold said the next day the trio needed a car to head north. They saw a middleaged man steve carter park his car and head towards a hiking area with his dog. The three drifters waited for him to return. Angold said that he heard a shot, i saw the man where he is suppose to be robbed stumble and then i saw mr. Lampley fire more rounds. Carters dog was also shot, but survived. Angold testified that he had to wash the blood off the money they stole from carters pockets. All of this business that he is talking about that you can see he has put himself in the path of the position and that it is not just the way it went down. Reporter their strategy is to make them appear to have less responsibility for the killings than an attempt to save them from firstdegree murder charges. On your side is who pulled the trigger the big lies that youre referring to . Clearly a big lie. Reporter the preliminary hearing should wrap up tomorrow and then up to the judge to decide whether that there is enough evidence against lampley and alligood.
