A Ground Breaking medical procedure is giving an oregon teenager a Second Chance at life. 13yearold jimenez was suffering from lifethreatening heart and respiratory problems last christmas. A heart and Lung Transplant seemed to be his only open for surviving, but time was running out. Doctors were forced to use a device called a shunt which establishes a lung outside of the body. It kept the boy alive until a new heart and lung could be found. Dont lose hope. Theres always a chance. Theres always a chance. The young boy was suffering from pull monetary hypertension. He is doing well with his new heart and lung. This is the first time a shunt was used on a child on the west coast. Doctors say the life saving procedure has only been performed an a dozen patients nationwide. New at 5 00, Berkeley High school devoted the entire day today to discussions about racism. And this day was chosen for a specific reason. Their lots of strong feelings about this one. This is such a big threat and i totally understand how people feel scared. People make racial comments about trying to be racist. Reporter such discussions played out in every classroom in what students called Berkeley High take back the day. Classes focused on racism affects the community in ways it can be overcome. I see a lot of students of different races being sort of invested in this sort of program. I really appreciate that as an africanamerican student. Reporter the reason why this day was chosen for this program is significant. A racist threat discovered on a computer in the School Library last month said there would be a kkk forever public lynching on december 9th, today. I was flustered and i was upset. I was upset because, well, i knew the administration possibly wouldnt do anything about t but they proofed me wrong. Reporter they wouldnt say if the student responsible has been ex pulled but expelled but did say he no longer attends school in berkeley. They asked it be devoted to healing and held an assembly while the classroom was devoted to discussion. I hope this is a moment this moment human eyeses the culture. Reporter it was instructive. We had an opportunity to talk about it in an academic way and through the perspectives of science and english and history, which i think is really interesting. Reporter there have been other racist incidents and much of the school is divided socially along racial lines. Socially, there is self segregation, like, for example, over there at the scene i dont remember steps, only white seniors hang there. Over there at the pe steps, only black students hang there. Things like that. Its not really socially integrated. Reporter just about everyone here agrees that racial divides cant be bringed overnight, but the school says it the look it is looking to see what changes it can make and hopes to have more programs like this one today.
