Crews continue making headway against the massive valley fire. Over the past week, the fire has burned nearly 74,000 acres. Good news tonight, it is 40 contained. 585 structures have already been lost, and 7000 homes remain threatened. A calfire spokesman told ktvu a short time ago while containment is increasing, there is concern that the fire could flare again as temperatures in that area increase. We want to check in now with meteorologist mark tamayo filling in tonight for bill. What does it look like in the fire zone as far as temperatures . We started to warm up today and looks like that trend will continue into the weekend. Unfortunately, before the fire started we had a string of triple digits and the fire started. Thankfully, weve had cooler temperatures over the past few days and also the rainfall. Now were heading into a bit of a warming trend. Yesterday, we had readings of 70s. Today, approaching the 80s. Tomorrow, the warmest locations around the fire zone, at least around the 90degree mark. A few spots could be in the mid 90s and that warmup will continue into sunday as well. Once again, things dry up rapidly around the valley fire zone. Heres a look at the forecast model for saturday. You can see at 7 00, lots of 60s out there. A bit of a breeze, variable wind around the fire, around 11 to 13 miles an hour. Then into the afternoon hours, these are sensors surrounding the fire area, at least in the upper 80s to around 90 degrees. I think a few spots within the fire zone could be approaching the lower 90s. Unfortunately, that warmup, that heatup will continue heading into the weekend for sunday as well, so the fire danger will be going up across the entire bay area as we have those warm offshore winds kicking up across the entire region. Well talk more about the major warmup. Well have a few triple digits to talk about as well. Well have that coming up in a few minutes. There are still thousands of evacuees from the valley fire waiting to be allowed to return to their homes. Ktvus tom vacar is in middletown tonight. Tom, there was a news briefing today. What happened there . Reporter well, theres a lot of Information Available and this information really was very important, except painfully short for those folks, those important folks desperate to get back in their properties. Even though the fire is now 40 contained, with hot weather and low humidity back, the army of fire firefighters has grown once again. There are nearly 4100 firefighters now on scene working to contain this fire. They are from across california and now from across the western united states. Reporter when Police Caught one individual with a car stolen inside the fire area and tried to make it look like a police vehicle, the Sheriffs Office decided to suspend escorting homeowners into the area for now. Were focusing all of our efforts, Law Enforcement efforts on getting officers out into the evacuation area and actively patrolling for anyone who is looting or should not be there. Were arresting folks out there that are attempting to break into homes and that in fact have broken into homes. Reporter folks will be allowedded to return, but only when their neighborhood is safe. Repopulation efforts are beginning and it will be a painful process. It will take time, but im here today to let you know that we are on it. Reporter thats because firefighters must inspect and assess each and every property in the fire zone before occupants will be readmitted. And one of those who lost their homes . We are currently assessing ongoing and longterm Housing Needs for those affected. Were going to be working with local realtors to secure rental housing for all the rental stock in the community, working with local banks for foreclosed homes, with hope of having the banks become landlords and most certainly looking into options for trailering on properties while folks are rebuilding on site. Reporter even then, people must exercise extreme caution. For structures burned, the ash can contain Hazardous Materials such as asbestos and heavy metals. Disturbing ash through sifting or digging can cause particles to become airborne and breathed into the lungs. Reporter now, many folks are going to be in a situation where they are coming back tomorrow and over the weekend. You can bet well be there to see that. Also, fire officials tell me they expect to report a much larger containment area tomorrow, now that they have a better idea since the rains have ended. Tom vacar, ktvu fox 2news. When you look at the picture behind you, you tom, it looks like a normal downtown. You would never know there had been a fire in the area. What is it like there in the downtown . Reporter well, the downtown is coming back to life. There were only minor damages honestly in the downtown area. I think the floral shop had its front credenza burned off. Other than that, it was pretty much back in business, to the extent there are people here to run those businesses. The electricity seems to have been restored, although there are hundreds of pg e trucks still out there fixing all kinds of poles and things like that. As people come back in, the businesses are starting to open. The cafe across the street from the store, well talk about at 5 30, back open. This place is slowly, but surely coming back to life. When those thousands of people come over the hill and from other parts of the lake, this town will be back in business, but it will be the business of restoration. Yeah, there is a long road ahead. Tom vacar in middletown tonight, thank you. Just days after a video of a brawl at levis stadium went viral, Santa Clara Police made four arrests. Authorities say felix ch. The man accused of kidnapping a woman from vallejo and holding her for ransom fainted in court today. Matthew muller was in court in hayward on a separate case. He was pleading no contest to a Home Invasion in dublin, when he became faint and medics were called in to help. He was able to proceed with the hearing and was not taken to the hospital. Mullers defense Attorney Says his client is under a lot of stress. Court is stressful. It just is. Its stressful for everybody, for the judge, the litigants, the parties, and so he became faint. But he recovered quickly and was doing well. Joining us now, ktvu Crime Reporter henry lee. You were in court today. Describe what happened. Well, according to the judge, he could see the defendant swaying, kind of moving back and forth and then a few minutes later, he just collapsed. We could hear his chains hitting the ground. The sheriffs deputies called for medics and the medics, you could hear them taking his blood pressure, making sure he was okay. He went right up and entered no contest pleas to the dublin Home Invasion. Then what happens after this plea . He will be sentenced in the state case in november. On monday, he will go to federal court in sacramento for the first time to answer charges in the vallejo kidnapping. And what do you expect to happen on monday . Well, his attorney has told me that if he enters a plea, it will be a plea of not guilty and then they will start preparing their defense for the vallejo kidnapping. This is the case everyone is looking at, the Denise Huskins case. They have taken care of the state case. Now they will move to the federal arena. Its such a strange case, the vallejo case where at first police were saying it was a hoax, now he is arrested. This guy is a harvardeducated attorney. What is he like in court . He is very softspoken, frank. You could not even imagine that this guy is the mastermind behind a very intricate, bizarre kidnapping plot. He was answering questions, yes your honor, as if he is the attorney that he will no longer be in the future. This is really surreal and sad to see this person who is educated at harvard is accused of major crimes. Hes no longer going to work as an attorney ever again. And obviously this development with fainting in court today. Thats right, very surprising. Who was in court . Is any of his family in court with him . Were the people from dublin, Denise Huskins and her boyfriend in court today . I did not see any of them. It was the judge, attorneys, myself and reporters. Just his attorney went to his side to see if he was okay. And this picks up again on monday. Absolutely. Thank you. A suspect is on the run tonight after escaping police in oakland. Get ready for a big warmup this weekend. Well be talking tripledigit heat. Back now to our coverage of the valley fire in lake county. Calfire now says containment is at 40 , up from 35 yesterday. The problem is temperatures are really heating up again. They certainly are. We have now on the phone with us calfire spokesman daniel burlant. How will this shift the strategy on the front lines . While weve really enjoyed the last couple of days with the cooler temperatures, even a little rainfall, today were starting to see temperatures go up. That means the possibility of seeing some flareups, even more hot spots goes up. Well have crews on the fire, jumping on hot spots as quickly as possible. It only takes one ember to jump the line and the fire could take off, especially with the winds being somewhat breezy here today. Daniel, more than 7000 homes are still threatened and 150 or so commercial buildings. Are any of those structures in eminent danger, or are they just threatened . Right now, were not seeing the same fire activity level we saw over the weekend. The immediate threat is not there. Its more the concern of the flareups, the hot spots that exist. Theres also a lot of infrastructure thats down, power lines, power poles, trees in the roadway, all of that being worked out right now. Were working very hard to try to get residents back into their homes as quickly as possible. Weve got to make sure its safe before we do that. Speaking of those evacuees, do you have any idea when more are going to be allowed back into their neighborhoods . Is there sort of a zone in which youre working to let more people into that particular area. Evaluating different areas neighborhood by neighborhood, what areas progress is being made in, which areas the cleanup work has occurred that we can get residents back in. We are hoping to have additional areas, evacuations lifted for some others possibly as early as later this evening. Other areas, the next couple of days. You wont see one large evacuation order. Its going to be broken up by neighborhoods, broken up by communities. We are working hard to get those residents back in. Weve got to make sure the danger is taken care of. Weve got to make sure the infrastructure that poses a hazard is is also removed before we do that. Daniel, earlier this week, we showed the shed where its believed this fire started. It was interesting that part of the shed wasnt even burned. Do you still think the fire started there and do you have any idea how . We continue to focus our investigation in the cobb region where this fire was reported, high valley and bottle rock road, that general area. Weve been investigating and talking to a number of residents, a number of witnesses throughout the area. We have not yet narrowed down exactly where and how this fire started. Our investigators, though, are working diligently to try to determine that. At this point, the fire remains under investigation. When frank asked earlier about the number of structures in eminent danger, do you, looking at how this fire is moving, do you see more damage of more homes being lost in this fire . At this point, with the decrease in fire activity, i dont expect to see more homes destroyed by fire activity increasing. Now, we could see flareups. We still have that possibility of certain areas, hot spots picking up. Right now, its going to be the majority of us continuing our damage assessment, figuring out exactly what was destroyed. The majority of the fire growth really occurred on saturday night and into sunday morning. Since then, weve had Little Pockets here and there where fire has increased, but the last couple of days, were just not seeing that growth in the fire. In fact, the fires remained the same acres for the last couple of days. We cant become complacent. Weve got to get the hot spots so we dont have the potential for homes to become immediately threatened. Daniel, at one point, several people were still unaccounted for. So far, three people we know have been killed by this fire. Have those other people been accounted for, or do you see at some point when you go through some of this rubble that we may find more bodies . Well, i can tell you the Sheriffs Department all day long here in middletown where im at has been going through house by house, with cadaver dogs, looking for any remnants of anybody who may have not been able to get out of their home in time. At this point, there are still just three confirmed fatalities, but knowing how fast the fire moved, knowing how destructive this fire was, it will be a miracle if there are not more individuals found, bodies found in this fire. We are hoping that it stays at three, but thats just too early at this point to tell. Again, the Sheriffs Department, local Police Departments all assisting in those efforts to determine if there are any more bodies that may not have been able to evacuate safely. Thats something were all hoping for that does not happen. Daniel, thanks once again for spending time with us today. Moving on here, its not going to be easy for three correctional deputies from Santa Clara County to make bail. All of them are charged with beating an inmate to death. Today, a judge set their bail at 1. 5 million each. Ktvus as mut smith was in the courtroom where emotions ran very high. Reporter raphael rodriguez, matthew ferris, jerry luben entered a packed santa clara courtroom filled with family and friends. One woman couldnt hide her tears. All rise. Reporter their attorneys pleaded to the judge for reasonable bail. The three correctional deputies are awaiting trial for murder in the beating death of jail inmate michael tyree. Their lawyers all said the deputies are south bay natives, family men with deep ties to the community. They provided the judge letters of support. At one point, at the request of rodriguezs lawyers, more than a dozen supporters stood up for the jail guard. Deputy District Attorney matthew brakier argued otherwise. These are serial attackers who tormented people in the jail, culminating with the beating death of mr. Tyree. Reporter among that evidence, Text Messages where the Prosecutor Says rodriguez bragged about slapping inmates. Their attorneys today shot down those claims. Those are the jail setting and the emergency medical setting, people say a lot of things. Its called gallos humor. You cant take it out of context. Reporter the judge set bail at 1. 5 million each, saying there wasnt enough evidence to prove they would harm the community. Will they be able to get out of custody . We hope so. The judge set a high bail, but at least with respect to deputy rodriguez, we have some property we think well be able to post. Reporter ktvu caught up with the woman who identified herself as jerry lubens mother. How is he doing . I didnt talk to him. Are you okay . Oh, yeah, im okay. Reporter she said she didnt know if her son would be able to post bail. All three deputies are due back in court on october 13. Later this month, a judge could determine if equity from a home could be used to post bail. Ktvu fox 2news.
