Well greg, i can tell you one thing. It is certainly picking up as the afternoon wears on and turns into evening here, this place is simply packed and organizers say they expect about 220,000 people to come through here over the next three days with more than 100 musical act performances. We are not allowed to show the main stage while acts are performing due to agreements with the artists, but from the crowd, its pretty easy to tell that everybody is having a good time you come all the way from seattle for outside scissor. Whos playing tonight at this stage, 8 30, organizers say thats pretty typical. They expect about half of those who attend will come from outside the bay area. While there are no official Health Requirements this year, masks are still encouraged in indoor spaces, but with covid still circulating and monkey pox now local and National Health emergency, some here say the fact that this event is nearly entirely outdoors is part of the draw. Youre here so early, and were outdoors that i mean, i probably wont say super late, but where you can stay far enough away from people im not concerned. And yeah, im not going to be touching anybody close enough to get monkey pox, but there are still some lingering concerns a little bit. Ive already had it. Ive been full of accidentally boosted. To a major animal rehabilitation underway nearly 700 sick pelicans have been admitted to rehab facilities across california since may. Jd bergeron, the ceo of International Bird rescue has been a part of that project. Hes joining us now live here on the five oclock news and jd thanks so much for taking the time here. How many pelicans is International Bird rescue taken in what part of california are they coming from . Yeah thanks for having us on we have taken in 347 birds. So about half of them that have come into care since the beginning of this, which started in about may we have a center in los angeles, which takes care of southern california, and we have a Northern California center, which had a much smaller number. So really, the majority of these birds do come from san diego upwards to central california. What is happening here . Are we rented . These birds are sick. But this is not some type of illness. What kind of condition are the birds in . And when they are being brought in unfortunately, its becoming a bit like a mystery tv show. Um, the one thing that they all have in common is symptoms of starvation, emaciation dehydration, very typical things to birds that are not eating enough. There does not seem to be any evidence of a contagion of a contaminant or any other similar thing that can cause a large scale problem like this. The real question here, though, is that the fish that they prefer to eat and the temperatures of water that those fish prefer to be in actually seemed to be normal. So it is something of a mystery, though there are a number of theories of what might be causing it. The only thing they have in common is that starvation and then a lot of them have secondary injuries that are consistent with making extra efforts to try to find food chasing fishing boats getting entangled in fishing line or even landing on highways Pacific Coast highway and getting hit by cars. We heard that first theory from the California Department of fish and wildlife, saying that the primary i guess the primary note here. The primary finding was starvation. But as you mentioned, these anchovies are pretty much in full supply. So that really kind of doesnt really make sense. But what do you think of them, also saying that strong winds in april and may may have made it difficult for them to forge. Do you think that could be a theory that could pan out . You know, its hard to say theres any reason to discount any theory until you can prove it wrong. I mean, fortunately, we were able to rule out Avian Influenza and similar contagion. Or uh um, uh , poisoning of something called domoic acid. However i dont know that personally, i find the wind theory any stronger than the others simply because pelicans have evolved over many, many, many thousands of years and have faced winds of Great Variety one. In theory i heard is perhaps there was a particularly strong population of pelicans this year, um, competing one of the things that was observed by birder. Friends of mine is that the birds as they started appearing in large numbers in central california, like monterey bay. They were seeing large numbers of them collecting on the rocks, disturbing some of the other nesting birds there, and it seems to be that once they reached the Northern California area, most of them were finding sufficient food. Its still remains kind of a mystery to be resolved. Okay lets talk about the rehabilitation process. How many have been released from your care . And where are they going . You know, the good news is pelicans do very, very well in captivity. Working in a rehab environment. We have released 210 of those birds already, um, majority of them. As i said, were coming from l a and were released in that area. Um, about 50 or so, actually, were in Northern California and have weve seen have re sightings already of a number of these birds. I think 32 re sightings, mostly in l, a county and san mateo. County at this point well , hopefully you get the answer you needed as to why this is happening, but its good to see the work youre doing to make sure these birds are rehabilitated. Jd bergeron with International Bird rescue, thanks so much for joining us this evening. In Contra Costa County officials have identified its first group of invasive mosquitoes, officials are asking people to be on the lookout for aidas agip t a day biting mosquito. I spoke to nola woods , the Public Affairs director for the county inspector controlled district about the new species and west nile concerns. No any specific concern about this specific species of mosquito and their appearance and Contra Costa County this week, the contra costa mosquito and Vector Control district discovered invasive eighties mosquitoes here in Contra Costa County. They were found in the city of martinez, south of highway four. We are currently working to reduce the risk that these mosquitoes would be spreading in Contra Costa County. No, obviously, one of the things that were always told to stop the growth of mosquitoes or the spread of mosquitoes just to clear standing water, the marsh fire that has been flooded by water and Contra Costa County. How much of a concern is that area to the work that youre doing . You are correct, greg. The most important thing we can all do to reduce the risk of mosquitoes is to dump out any standing water when you have a situation along the marsh area, for example, we saw a number of mosquitoes coming off of the marsh area due to high tides before the marsh fire and so at the situation with the marsh fire and the flooding that it took to put out that fire, we are working closely with the parties involved.
