I wouldnt want to be in a security situation in that station because theres nobody there and nobodys going to help you. Generally speaking, bart is safe. Reporter the police chief says the agent was on duty somewhere in the station. He says that transit officers are responsible for two to three stations. There is a we way we can guarantee a Police Officer. As for the bart workers sitting in the truck, they were maintenance workers. They have no Law Enforcement training. We would ask them to be a good witness. Reporter many say the bart needs to be more proactive. Police need to be in the station for the issues. They need to be trained. For the number of cars and people that travel through a station, it is tough to be on the trains and the platforms and in the station and the parking lots. Reporter currently there are 185 sworn officers and they are trying to hire 40 more. Bart 47 stations are sprawled out over 112 miles of track. And currently has 669 cars to make up its trains. It has 50,000 spaces in its many parking lots. By definition, that means the bar Police Officer police force is spread thin covering multiple stations per shift whether or not the trains are operating. We are responsible 24 7 for the bart district. We have vehicles left overnight and we have people that come onto the property to commit crimes.
