The fires have caused tens and millions of dollars in unfinished apartment complexes. Early this week, oakland mayor met with developers about security and expediting expediting permits. She spoke with us about the fires and the possibility that they could be the work of an arsonist. Who is upset about the new ways. The way to address the escalating rents is to build more. That is to build more for every income level. I always say that i am not going to be like donald trump. I will not vilify outsiders or newcomers. I would not build a wall around oakland. Suffers as though city leaders increasing efforts to clean one of the dirtiest stations of bart. The civic station. The Health Department issuing a notice declaring the areas near that station a Public Health nuisance. Giving Homeless People 72 hours to leave. The move comes just one day after bart board of directors was in the city for a meeting at the powell street station. It was a chance for the directors to see the issues facing the system and writers firsthand. Joining me now is bart bevan, board director. What did you think yesterday of the conditions when you toured the powell street station . They are very much what i expected. This is a station that is used by thousands of people that are working in the area. People working in tourism and convention and hotel industry. We are remodeling the station. We are planning to have a bathroom. We will have more accessible space, making it more attractive. May also have some real problems. When the city passedavoters passed sit and lie in 2010, it was determined that sit and lie did not apply belowground in the station. Many people moved into those areas. And have stayed. Bart , in partnership with the city is taking a number of steps to try to help people. And also make the situation much better for writers. Bevan, can you talk about those steps . We have never had the seven cisco Homeless Outreach team in our station. There used to be rules in the former department, that they could not go to the train level. This is something very important to me. Bart and muni have combined to put up 250,000. Will have a dedicated twoperson Homeless Outreach team. Going, whether it is 3 am and station agents are having difficulty climbing over people, to open stations in time for the 4 am boarding. As well as people there during the daytime. I am very excited. Starting in september, we will have a twoperson team at the downtown station. The other thing is that we recently received a grant. Bart works with the city and county of San Francisco for something called blade sf. A program started in seattle many cities are bracing at as best practice. It is a diversion program. Focusing in on people who are part of the drug trade. People addicted to drugs, low level drug dealers etc. Also homeless and those with mental illness. Lead sf focusing on Center Center and that station. To divert people into Substance Abuse treatment and housing. It is another big step. Civic center is an unacceptable situation. The escalators by the burger king have so many syringes thrown into them, that it will take two years to fix them. It is boarded up. It is very much unacceptable. Yesterdays meeting brought it home to our directors and executive staff, what the challenges are. As i understand it, you have quite a bit of video that you will share with people, showing what is happening in terms of drug abuse. The Health Departmentadid in fact point two an increase in drug use you mentioned the escalator at the civic center station. Bevan, i live in the city and use both stations. If they areathey are filthy. You talked about potential solutions. My question and what writers at home want to know, is getting people to move on. In the short term. It is something doable. What about long term . Long term, we have to reinvest in the station. You will seearight now, you will see there are deterrent gates at some of the entrances. Both around powell and civic center. We are installing in the next year and a halfawe are installing station covers. That you see at 19th street and oakland. So people are not coming into the entrance areas at night. So it is safer. We have already seen with the gates installed around powell station, a dramatic reduction in the number of people who are coming into the station areas and gates to sleep. In addition, i was ableain this difficult bart budget year, to get for additional station cleaners , that will be between embarcadero and civic center station. The most important thing heather is bart is a transportation agency. A lot of what is happening is beyond the realm of what we do. We need to cooperate and need the involvement of the city. That is why i ran for the bart barred. I worked in City Government for 25 years. I know the Police Officers and the Homeless Outreach people. My commitment is for it to start to see some change. To be stations that are safe, clean and welcoming transit ways. And not the places that are unsafe and unwelcoming. Places i would not want to bring my child. Evan, i think that is a vision by all bart writers. Thanks for talking to us. Thank you. Scary moments for a sulfate mother driving with her children. The loud noise she heard and what she found in her daughters head that led to an investigation. And notable heat up for the bay area weekend. I will look at temperatures inspected for your area and how long the trend is expected to last. The search is on for person firing pellet guns at cars in unincorporated morgan hill. Yesterday a woman said she was driving with her daughter and son in the backseat and they thought they heard an explosion. The younger was injured. We have the very latest on that investigation. Reporter grace has the story to tell it is not the story you want to hear coming from a sevenyear old or any child. The soontobe thirdgrader was heading to grandmas house to go swimming. When an unexpected thing happened. We were sleeping in the car. Then we heard a big pop. And i moved my hand and there was blood. Reporter at 9 30 am, graces mother was driving north bound in morgan hill. Half a mile past fitzgerald street she heard what she thought may have been a rock hitting her car. I thought what was that . I looked back in my Rearview Mirror and my whole back windshield was shattered. Reporter a truck driver pulled up and the vehicle had been hit. Authorities found a mark on the backseat and they realized it was a pellet from a pellet gun. That was when i thought you have to be kidding me. I never thought about that. Took the project out grazed graces ear. The authority looked and found it stuck in her hair. I did not know what happened. I was going to go swim and they shot me. Reporter deputies spoke to property owners. It cost a few hundred dollars in damage. Nothing compared to what could have happened. I am so grateful to god that she is okay. It could have been a different story. One inch over. Reporter as for grace, she is grateful. I am happy i am okay. It was close to my head. Reporter thankful her four yearold brother sitting beside her did not get hurt. It is not something you think of. Of all the things we are told to be worried about as a mom, this is not on my radar.
