Now to the weather and there has been a bit of a cooldown but inland temperatures are only seeing a few degrees of relief and it is not going to last long. Lets go to mary for the latest on the hot weather. Temperatures are going to turn around and head on back upwards. Lets take a look at your numbers. We have 61 degrees at Half Moon Bay. 64 at San Francisco. Inside the bay, 76. 76 in hayward and 94 degrees this afternoon and 99 in concord. Some of the hotter spots, to the north bay, 93 degrees. San francisco, a cool 64. We will go to the east bay where some of the hotter numbers are. 92 for pittsburgh. 91 in danville and 97. Heres a look at our temperature changes. We dropped off yesterday and did some more today. 10 degrees cooler than we were at this time yesterday by 5 degrees and warmer over santa rosa and inland, livermore down by 6 degrees but it is all relative because we are still well into the 90s and with that, the heat advisory will continue for a couple of more days all the way through thursday evening because as i mentioned, temperatures are going back up. We will have a look at what we can expect for wednesday, thursday and your extended forecast. The bay area weekend, finally a big cooldown. The polls have just closed in roswell for the special election in the sixth congressional district. Democrat, jon ossoff facing karen handel for that seat. The two are battling for this event was [by the secretary of health and human services, tom price. Both candidates are in a neck to neck battle while the democrats have not had a representative since 1979, the race is expected to go down to the wire. Most say the outcome of this election could shape the 2018 midterm elections. Joining me now to talk about it is doctor keeley mcbride. Why is there so much attention on the most expensive race in American History for congress . Yes, for the house, absolutely. I think this is the first referendum on the truck presidency and both parties are putting all of their resources into this particular race. And both parties are trying to figure out what this means, how they should run with the truck presidency in the future. How has the name, trump, been injected into this campaign . Because from what i have been hearing, karen handel has not wanted to mention trump very much. The democrat candidate has not particularly wanted to run against trump either. He just wants to appear in the face of rationality and reason and assume that one of the interesting things about that district is a very highly educated district and those are the voters that donald trump struggled with during the general election so the real question is, will those voters continue to vote republican or are they going to move towards democrats. Expect even if the democrats dont win this race, the fact that it is so close has been a republican territory for so long. Almost 50 years. That is remarkable. Too close to call. We are looking at other races around the country where the contest would be much tighter because there is a lot of kind of tossup areas, purple parts of the country where you would not expect i guess what im getting at is that this is a deep red district and a purple red district, you would expect if this goes blue that the purple places will go blue, as well. How many districts are applicable and also, the republicans in Congress Really want rain what is their strategy in terms of running with trump or against trump . Should they distanced themselves . So they are trying to figure out how trump is playing with their boulders. We are going to have a formal republican chairman here on the show a little bit later on and i will predict that he is going to say, this is not that important for republicans if the republicans lose this race, it is not a big deal. It is also important for democrats because right now, the democrats are having internal struggles within themselves about if they need to be running more left or central. Depending on the outcome of this election, either the central will sase . We have the right strategy and if loses, the left side of the party is going to say, see . We need to run more populous candidates. In california, darrel issa in San Diego County just barely squeaked by with the wind this time around. The next midterm election, do you think he is going to have [ indiscernible ] . The democrats have identified lots of districts that they are planning on trying to flip so if i were a republican congressman in california, i would be very nervous. And we still dont know what is going to happen with the Russian Investigation and a lot more could come out that could possibly a sack does affect the 2018 midterms . absolutely. Heather . Our coverage on this special election continues. Coming up at 4 30, a California Republican will be joining us like to talk about the significance of this race and why he believes the outcome means nothing. San Francisco Pride week is officially underway kicking off last week with the flag raising at city hall. The mayor joined by others including pride celebration organizers and u. S. House democratic leader, nancy pelosi, made a rainbow flag at city hall. This year, organizers say it takes on a tone of resistance much as started 47 years ago, a protest. This is different in that the community is experiencing some possible attacks on the equal rights. Expect the power of the protest element in this years parade is perhaps best demonstrated by the robust sales of rainbow items. A fixture in the castro. The plans, we have not been able to keep in stock. We have had to reorder all of the clothing pieces. The owner describes the sale of pride items as phenomenal as President Trump took office. Even more than they expected to extract much more on that special election being held today including people who dont even live in georgia so invested in the race. Hot temperatures are now impacting flies. Flights. Why several dozen planes were grounded. Youre watching the four on the 2. Back to our coverage of todays special election where democrats are hoping to deal President Trump a real setback. Joining me now is a former leader of the republican party. Thank you for being here. Lets say thomas off went. What type of impact lets say tom wins. Whoever wins is going to exaggerate and be wrong. Remember, there is a race in South Carolina today. That means the republicans have 13 and then we have georgia. You cant say there is very bad referendum. They poured 98 of the money for this guy has come from out of state so i dont know who is going to win and i am sure there are going to be fights over it but what matters is six months from now and really what matters is 18 months from now and this led and this race will be long forgotten. You say it is meaningless but this has historically gone republican and if it does go democrat, that does in fact mean something. No, because 18 months from now or two years after that. Remember also that georgia in 2014 spent 100 million in the senate race and that democrats still lost. In general elections, they wont be able to hold onto the seat and remember, special elections are different. The democrats had a 20 registration but it was a very unique race. Republicans in the state won a special election along the coast. So they tend to be very particular races to the area. Now, there is a slight risk to the democrats. If they lose this after pouring in all of that money, that will hurt them psychologically but at the end of the day what matters is whether the republicans do healthcare and it works a little bit and they do taxes, that is their ticket. If they fail on both of those, then, they are going to have a hard time next year. Lets talk about something that you mentioned which is the amount of money being spent and a lot of it is coming from california and the bay area. Why this particular race, do you think . It has been ramping up. Money in government. Money in elections rises with money in government. George bush ended up spending 300 million. On three on three u. S. Senate seats. Every race, lets just concentrate on one race and run up the numbers. Why is this happening . It is simple. Because there is more at stake. A 6 trillion government and the money is going to keep rising. Lets talk about agenda and it appears as though the republican agenda is installed and there is quite a bit of talk about democrats being to blame for that but lets talk about what happened during the Obama Administration and when the roles were reversed and the republicans basically see said we are not going to put anything in front of obama. How do you get past that . Today . Republicans actually pass the tax bill. How to get past as government grows, the states are larger because more people are getting money from government. 6 trillion. So when you do an omnibus bill, there are all of these people interested and that freezes it and nothing really happens. The republicans want to be successful, do you know what they should do . Fix a small series of bills and chip away at problems. If they do that, they can improve things that they need a tax bill. If they dont put a tax bill, next year is in jeopardy. We will have to wait and see if they in fact do that. Also, they are in georgia from that special election poll closing around 4 00 today. The oakland as with a potential stadium location has been narrowed to three. The current coliseum location, the Howard Terminal site or a 13 acre site near laney college. Today on the nine, the Bay Area Council released its initial findings on the economic effect of building a new as stadium. The results found that a new stadium could pump 3 billion into oaklands economy in the first 10 years. Christina rained down is live in the newsroom. Christina is live in the newsroom. That they are not saying which one is a front runner but regardless, we do know that a new stadium will have a big Economic Impact. The as have called Oakland CollegeOakland Coliseum home but the as want to bring a vibrant village to life around it. I think we want our stadium to be a little different. Unique in its own way. The as president of the Bay Area Council of economic infrastructure revealed that a new stadium is estimated to generate 3. 05 billion for oakland in the next 10 years of the ballparks operation. The Economic Institute released a study showing that figure comes from construction spending, gaming spending and ballpark operations. Is great for the city. Even if you are not a fan, it will be a great Economic Impact and catalyst for a lot of positive things in the city and since we have been here for 49 years, that is a great way to give back. Roughly 2000 construction jobs could be created over a period of time that it takes to build the ballpark. The new stadium is expected to have a more intimate feel and depending on the locations, it could spur housing and commercial development. I think a lot of things they are looking to develop is, how do you get people to the neighborhood and it is a magnet for these two coming from oakland. Three possible locations, the coliseum site, a proposed waterfront location or lake merritt, neck and neck wherever they choose to build, it will be a game changer. For the new ballpark, keep our players and actually compete for championships. They will commission a second study once they find the final location and will have more specific data on the impact of that fight and the announcement is expected by the end of the year. To read the upper report in its entirety, go to our website. In just a few hours, Berkeley City Council is set to vote on whether or not the citys participation in a Law Enforcement program called urban shield. The National Weather service participating anticipating an excessive heat warning. The only area not going to happen at visor he on thursday is going to be the coast. The coast is socked in by a little bit of fog already this afternoon and it will continue to move through the bay as we move into the evening hours. I tomorrow morning, we will have some just inside the bay picking up on a little bit of blue indicating possible patchy drizzle tomorrow morning. And 76 expected in santa cruz. Tomorrow is not even the warmest day. Thursday is expected to be the hottest day with temperatures getting two 106. Upper 80s to 90 degrees around the bay and low 70s expected at the coast. We expect to see temperatures drop off on friday and still quite toasty but not as bad and as we get into the weekend, low 60s at the coast and 70s around the bay and low 90s inland. We just have to get past the next couple of days. While it is a few degrees cooler in parts of the bay area, the heat wave continues. It is so hot that American Airlines has canceled dozens of flights at Sky Harbor Airport in phoenix and that is were temperatures reached 120 today. American Airlines Says smaller just cannot take off properly in this weather. It is just too hot and the air is less thans and some places, you need to much runway to get off the ground. Tom haynes, an aircraft owner and pilots association. Tom, take you for joining us and explain how heat up at aircraft performance. Guys, a jet engine is based on a heat pump so as a result, it eats a lot of air and when the air is dense on days like today and it is so hot out there, there are fewer air molecules in the air molecules are all spread out and the engine cannot take in enough air to generate the same amount of thrust. The same thing with the wings, the wings require air molecules flowing over that when to generate lift and on days like today, the air is dense and the airplane simply cannot generate the same amount of lift that he can on a cooler day so those things combined me that the airplane takes longer to take off and does not climb as well. It lands and lands at a higher speed and needs more runway. All those things combined to really impact aviation. This is a big deal in phoenix because that is a big hug for American Airlines. Are there other airports across the country affected by the heat like this . Albuquerque . Dallas . Denver . Absolutely. Particularly the higher altitude ones. Even denver on a day that it is not nearly as hot as what you are experiencing in phoenix can have an issue like this because they are at 5000 feet elevation and the air is more dense on any given day than it is in phoenix. Only about 1100 feet above sea level here. So that becomes a critical factor in cities like that and think about the activity of that airport, alone. The heat, does that affect turbulence . Because it seems when you are flying into las vegas or denver in the summer, it is a rougher ride. What happens is that you have the sun beating down on the ground causing thermals and pockets of air to rise up and rise more quickly than it will on a cool day. Particularly, on a cool overcast day. You wont get much of that at all but on a hot and sunny day, you will get a lot of turbulence off the ground and that leads to a bumpy ride. One tip for travelers would be to try to catch the Early Morning flight when it is cooler. And the plane will get off the ground. Tom haynes from alpa. From fredericksburg maryland.
