Methamphetamine. 36yearold Sayyadina Thomas is sitting in jail charged with felony child abuse for allegedly forcing meth into a twoyearold boys mouth. It happened monday afternoon as a boy named griffin was with his nanny and another toddler at the play structure of peoples park in berkeley. The nanny was apparently unaware that the park is frequented by the mentally ill and drug users. Witnesses say thomas saw griffin asking if he wanted candy and then grabbed him. She grabbed the child by the back of the head and forced it into his mouth. I have a doctor of my own. I reacted and ran straight up to her. She ran straight off the boys nanny checked his mouth and found nothing. Still she called Uc Berkeley Police we are at peoples park and a report of a child having something in his mouth. She told police that thomas was a stranger to them interactions were unprovoked. Officers arrested thomas who told police she gave the bowl boy a tootsie roll. Later, she told paramedics it was actually met. Griffin was told took in two Childrens Hospital in his urine tested positive for meth it. I spoke to a friend and thomas is a mother to young twin girls. She has been going through challenges for many years now. I do not know why pick on thing i can think is it is a cry for help. The defendant has previous convictions for resisting arrest. Weve seen her walking around. She seems disconnected and to be on drugs tibet. Possibly mentally ill. This family brought their kids to the play structure i did not know, this is not where i would choose to hang out. We come through. On my own, i would not come here. Thomas is in custody in dublin. No bail is allowed because the District Attorney want to revoke her probation. Henry lee, ktvu. Henry, it seems like parents do not feel that is an appropriate place to bring children although there is a play structure. Any word from police about more enforcement in that area to monitor the activity . Yes they have stepped up patrols in the area. Peoples park is known to regulars as not safe. Pressuring him to go through with his suicide plans the prosecution claims carter did not have many friends and wanted sympathy as the grieving girlfriend. The defense denies those allegations, think carter tried to get right to seek help for months. Joining us now via skype is criminal defense attorney someone. We are hearing that massachusetts does not have a law making it a criminal act to assist or encourage suicide. What does this mean for prosecution and the defense . I think they are trying to use the angle that she neglected to seek help and pushed him over the edge to kill himself. To me, it is preposterous. I do not know how they went to trial with this. , got this far. Interesting. Carters attorney claims that roy tried to convince her to join him in a romeo and juliet out to the side she allegedly refused. That was one month before carter went through with it. Carter, encouraged him to go through with it one month later. His plan for suicide, after he panicked. Does her initial refusal help her out . I think the refusal helps her out. I think the fact that she was not there and she did not assist him. Is a tragic what happened . Absolutely. Should she have helped and encouraged him to get help . Does she need psychological help . Possibly. For them to say that she is culpable in any way in this tragic occurrence is absurd. You do not think she should be punished criminally at all . No. So we have heard testimony that he texted her the day before he took his life asking if a portable generator could kill someone. It turns out that is what he used in his death inhaling a lethal amount of carbon monoxide. It sounds like to some people, that you not only encourage them but helped them plan it out. Do you agree . I disagree with that. I do not think she helped him kill himself. I think he was turning to her and talking to her about it. From what it sounds like, there may have been a history there also the people are looking at. He may have had suicidal tendencies in the past. She may have been his source of contact at the time. She was talking him through it while it was happening. I do not think she is culpable for assisting with the suicide at least not manslaughter. That is a serious charge of giving someone who was not there. If he was talking about it for that length of time that they are alleging, who knows how often she took him seriously. If he was venting. Maybe not manslaughter. Another charge . I do not take anything. Nothing at all. If he is contemplating suicide for a period of time, and it is serious, she shouldve helped him get help. We do not know what the rest of the messages there is a chance that she may not have been taking him seriously. And may have been him venting and depressed. And her not thinking he would do it. Interesting we will have to see what happens. This is day two of the trial. There is talk about setting precedent for changes in the law. Will have to see what happens. Thank you for joining us. One of the perks of the law was that the Homeless Outreach team was not allowed to be on the trains or in the stations those are the people who are the point people to get people off of the street. That will be changed and there will even be some money contributed to get them onto the trains and interact with these people and try to get them someplace else to go. As far as the law itself, i think it is in no trouble. Bart police are 35 officers short. They have other things to do. Bevins said this is not in the top 10 things they are worried about in bart a good point. I dont know if you think it would be wise for bart to come up with another option to free up seats on the train. Congestion is an ongoing issue and bart is trying to come up with other options outside of enforcement for that are there other options . I think there are. You are right. Sayyadina thomas is sitting in jail formally charged with felony child abuse for forcing methamphetamine into a twoyear old boys mouth on monday afternoon as the boy was with his nanny and another toddler at the park. The nanny was apparently unaware that the park is frequented by the mentally ill and drug users. Witnesses said they saw her ask him if they wanted candy and grabbed him. She grabbed him by the back of the head and pushed it. I ran straight up there. She ran off. The boys nanny found nothing but she called police. A subject shoving something into the childs mouth. Her actions were unprovoked. Ulcers dish officers arrested her. She was taken to Childrens Hospital in oakland. He was tested positive and has been released.
