Im happy to tell you about last night, leading up to the performance of the National Anthem, at several schools here in oakland, students are very much aware of what is happening in the news and the stance of Colin Kaepernick. They are aware of priest Police Brutality against black lives and they started discussing what the anthem means in our classrooms. Some students really wanted to take a knee, they discuss that they wanted to do this and for us it was really important to not impose our values on them. We were able to collaborate as a music staff and talk about how to talk her students around this so that everyone would feel comfortable and students that felt like they understood the issue and wanted to take a knee could do so and if student still had a really strong feelings about this but did not want to take a me a knee would feel comfortable as well because we are very inclusive. When you are having this conversation with the students, what are they hoping to achieve through their action last night . What were the students hoping to achieve through their actions . Visibility and definitely a chance to express their own opinions. As educators that is the best thing to give our students, a chance to express free speech. I understand that the flag represents a lot of Different Things to a lot of different people, for veterans and active duty it represents a commitment to the comp country and it represents the Public Schools and underfunded Public Schools and what we stand for. I believe what the students really wanted to do was to something that says they are paying attention and they have really strong opinions. Obviously i was not there and you cannot see in this particular clip but what was the crowd reaction . The crowd responded positively afterwards, they were thrilled to see the students take a stand by taking a knee. We also let students know as did the director of pr afterwards, he said a nice thing and had a good conversation to say that there could be ramifications for doing this. Right now, this is live and we are really in the middle of an interesting teachable moment and i believe there are people in the community that feel very proud and there are some people around pretty much are not within the community that are pretty upset. For those people, we want you to understand there is no disrespect to this country at all, we want to affect change, positive change, especially for our students, many of whom live in poverty and feel strongly about this and this was a moment where they could very peacefully and quietly express themselves. You mentioned a bit of the backlash, what are you hearing from people that are unhappy with what the students did . Some did choose not to take any. The backlash that we are seeing is there certainly angry responses to what our students stood for. I believe a lot of it is a concern for the country and what does patriotism mean . It is a great question and it is a great way to discuss if we can sing the National Anthem but still be critical of what the country doesnt help policies are affecting the people in our world. I see many of those students behind you, is this something that they plan to continue to do . Have you had a conversation with them about their future plans . The future plans of our students i think it is certainly after the fact, we talked today about how the community is responding to their activism and i think activism doesnt happen just once, it happens over time and we are certainly seeing the same type of social justice thats been going on my whole life, my parents before me, i think that the kids know that it is a long battle ahead of us. To think some of them will take any other performances . I think the students will take on ideas of social change in many ways, whether its other performances were using artistic and creative and Academic Skills for saying what is important to them. Para 2, one is proposition 55 which is basically an extension of a proposition passed in to the 12, it is a tax on the wealthiest earners in california, the top 1. 5 , all of the funding goes to funding schools, k12 and community college. Obviously that is a yes check in your estimation. That is, and if we do not pass that we will go off the cliff. This could tangibly mean laying off teachers, reducing our in music and increasing class sizes, that has a big impact. And prop 56, the tobacco tax increase that would basically require a two dollar increase in tax per cigarette box. That money would go to education for healthcare. There is a relation between increase in price of cigarettes and a decrease in young people smoking. It will dissuade young people from smoking and we know that 17,000 kids start smoking every year in california and tragically a third of those people lose their life later on in life to tobacco issues. What about the legalization of marijuana . We are neutral, abstinence opponents and supporters weigh in differently. But you are not about tobacco, what is the difference . The tobacco taxes there is a much easier correlation and if further regulates the sensation devices of the east cigarettes, they have these been dazzled and the jeweled ecigarette succumb with candy flavored nicotine products, those are very clearly and on ground and onramp for smoking for kids.
