Crest healthy, beautiful smiles for life. The American Civil Liberties union says private corporations now run 16 of state prisons. One of the Largest Companies is cca, Correction Corporation of america. It runs 4 right here in the state of california. Theres a lot of debate about the cost savings and reports of increased violence in these prisons. A reporter at mother jones decided to check it out for himself. Shane bauer spent two years in prison in iran accused of espionage. He worked at a cca facility in louisiana. Were talking with shane about what he saw firsthand inside the prison. Shane bauer liz with us right now is with us right now. Thank you for being with us. Thank you for having me. Nine dollars per hour, you moved from california all the way to louisiana for what many consider a very dangerous job. Why . Why do this . Why was it so important to you to find out what was actually happening behind those walls . I had been reporting on prisons for a few years and it was constantly i was constantly coming up against walls. It was difficult to get information. We have public assess access laws. A lot of times prison so respond to this. This is especially true with private prisons run by companies. Company records are applying the same way because they are not public institutions. Ive seen reports occasionally of riots and violence, issues with staffing and medical care. In the 30 years that these prisons have existed, we havent really seen a close up look of what life is like inside. I decided one day to put an application in and see if i could get in and i did pretty quickly. What was the q a with whoever was interviewing you . Was easy . It was easy. They didnt ask me why i wanted to work there. They didnt ask job history. They asked state or questions that you may expect from mcdonalds. If you dont get along with a coworker, how do you deal with that, those kinds of things. The only thing that had to do with prison was whats your idea of Customer Service and how does that apply to inmates. To how did you answer that. [ laughter ] i said Something Like the customer is always right at different in that situation. He didnt tell them you are a journalist. I actually filled out my application truthfully. I wrote down the foundation for National Progress which is the Parent Company of mother jones. I was never asked about any of this. You had heard the stories about riots and poor conditions. What did you actually find . I saw a prison that was the there was a lot of violence i saw a prison where there was a lot of violence. [ technical difficulties ] i met an inmate to lost his fingers to gangrene after making attempts to see a dr. Over a period of months. A lot of issues like that, i saw people put on suicide watch which is basically solitary confinement where they are kept naked and given food that was below the usda caloric requirement. I saw a man escape while i was there in the day time in the middle of the day. He climbed over the fence in view of the guard towers but there were no guards in the towers. They have cameras instead of guards. Exactly. It has been four months. Once you are out, tell us about how you left. You chronicled this. Theres a long article you wrote about this and also a video which is all part of it. Tell us when was it time to leave . I was there for 4 months. I was considering whether i should stay or go. My job was really difficult and wearing on me. The same time i had been picked for a promotion after 2 1 2 months on the job. It turned out i really didnt have to make the decision because a colleague of mine had been there to shoot video for the story and he was getting a nighttime shot of the prison and got arrested while taking photos in the prison and spent 24 hours in jail. Why did he get arrested . He was accused of trespassing. He wasnt anywhere near the prison. He was taking photos of the prison from the outside. Initially they didnt know what he was doing there. He got out on bail and we basically packed up the apartment and left. The bigger picture, i want to ask you about cca. Would you say that its in ccas interest to get lobbyist to lobby government officials, not just here in california but across the country, in order to boost the population of these private prisons. It is forprofit. I would assume that the more inmates you have in these prisons, the more money these cavities are making. Did you get any of that from within or in your investigation outside . Inside it was all about the prison. I was at the lowest level of the company in the company. I wasnt seeing the kind of corporate level stuff. I did spend another year doing for the reporting on the company and i did see that they do put a lot of money into lobbying both on the federal level and state level. One area that they are really pushing into and have been in recent years is immigrant retention. Thats where you see the growth area with companies such as cca. I dont want to just point out cca. There are other companies. Exactly. They had been lobbying against bills to make private prisons have to abide by the same Public Record laws as other prisons. Where is the money going . You are making nine dollars an hour. You can see the poor conditions in the video. Inmates arent getting enough food. Where is the money going . The ceo makes over 3 million a year. Cca brings in about 1. 9 billion a year in revenue. He makes, 19 times more than the director of the federal bureau of prisons. On the flipside, to get the other side, the advantage of private prisons from what i have read is that taxpayers are saving money. The ceo makes a lot of money but a lot of ceos make a lot of money. [ overlapping speakers ] that is the main argument. There are conflicting studies about that. There are different issues. In california, cca contracts with the state. It says cca will not take inmates that have Serious Mental Health or physical health issues. The cost of those medical expenses is going back onto the taxpayer. There are hidden costs we dont see. Taking care of an inmate like that is [ overlapping speakers ] i sent over 150 questions to cca. There was a long backand forth. They also contacted [ indiscernible ] after i left. They said his mother jones said if mother jones reported a story, there could be repercussions. To all citizens a lawmakers need to take a closer look at this before making any decisions.
