They say fiscal attacks against staff are continuous. A couple of employees had ro tay tor cuff shoulders. We have an employee who had a total knee replacement. I had been kicked, punched. I had urine thrown on me. It was a very vicious attack. Blood everywhere, this patient that was attacked had to be sent out to get medical treatment for his wounds. Reporter in 2003 did a doctor was killed after being strangled by a patient. They dont know how to problem solve or work things out. They only know how to become aggressive and attack one another. Reporter despite repeated complaints, the overcrowding continues. Mentally unstable patients confined to a small space creating a ticking bomb. Theyre agitated, angry and you put them all in a little room thats locked. Reporter Staff Members tell ktvu that almost 1,000 patients went to them in 2008, this year it stored to 16 thousand. ,000. Last december, the Health System that overseeing john george issued an internal audit report and found inconsistencies with so aftering ratios. Some instances the ratio was met, other times it was under or after the staff to patient ratios. If in reality, theres often 20 punishments to one nurse and up to 70 to one doctor. After a patient hanged northwest 2005, the grand jury investigated john george and found a failure to hire enough nurses to provide up to date care at the facility and its not in full compliance with the state laws. Theyre seeing a revolving door of patients. Theyre coming back again and again because we dont have the time or facilities to give them the care they need. Reporter dr. Joel walker is the medical director. He admits the facility can be overcrowded but when that happens, extra Staff Members are called in. Although they may not show up far few hours. Do i understand how difficult it is for a patient and Family Member to endure those periods . I do. And we take it as our highest priority to make it as brief as possible. Reporter Health Officials say theyre working to reduce the overcrowding but it wont happen overnight. Is it going to happen tomorrow . No. Its going to be an ongoing process and im confident were taking steps necessary to address it. Reporter theyre working to divert patients from john george to other facilities and trying to get Mental Health evaluations to keep some patients from going there. In the meantime, conditions remain unchanged. These are vulnerable people, who are indigent, homeless and cant advocate for themselves. Reporter people who may be near the bottom of society, yet Staff Members say deserve better. Its somebodys loved one, were fighting for them. Since the story aired last night, we had three former patients contact us to say the conditions are just as bad as described. One woman said it was more crowded than we saw in that video and well hear from here at 5 00. That video is eye opening. My question is i mean, he says we understand theres a problem, but he didnt offer any sort of solution. No specifics and thats the complaint by Staff Members. They say theyve been hearing this for years. The Administration Says were working on it and going to come up with a solution, and nothings changed. Fort mcmurray is in alberta is under evacuation orders. Many escaping just before the fire trapped them in their homes.
