You can see on the outside of this house where the car crashed but not before hitting a man who was walking on the sidewalk. It happened at 2 20 on the corner of 46th and fulton across the street from golden gate park. Witnesses say an elderly man was driving about 55 Miles Per Hour when he slammed into the me des streep. The victims headphones were knocked off. Inside, the woman says she got the shock of her life when the car came within inches of her sixmonthold daughter. She was shocked, i was shocked, and i grabbed her and ran. And i just fell so lucky that she is okay. I mean, i feel bad for the pedestrian. I think he is going to be okay. But i thank may lucky stars, to be honest. Reporter driver told police that his brakes were not working. Obviously the crash is under investigation. Mean while the victim whose shoes were tossed several yards away, sitting right here in a neat pile, were actually tossed quite a distance. They are here on the sidewalk. That man suffered a broken femur but he is expected to survive. That is all we know. The accident obviously under investigation, and a very relieved mother at this hour. Back to you. Tara moriarty live at the scene. Police say they believe the torso of a woman found in the bay belongs to a missing brisbane resident. Her husband reported her missing on february 15th. This last sunday fishermen found the dismembered torso near the dorks mbart bridge. Police say they have also found other body parts in that area but have not identified the remains. It showed a possible link. It showed a strong possibility that it could be her. We would never go out with a formal press release or anything else without feeling fairly confident that were headed in that right direction. Fremont police notified Brisbane Police about a possible link to the case of the missing 57yearold woman two days ago. Later that day police say her husband committed suicide by jumping off the bay bridge. Police say they will try to confirm the identity of the repains by comparing her dna to that of her adult son. That could take a couple more wakes. Police are looking for a carful of male suspects after someone in that van shot and injured a taken age boy. Some 500 students marched through San FranciscoState University campus today. They are protesting budget cuts that could gut the college of ethnic studies. News about to dwindling funds came out this month after Department Chairs began informing people that the college could be forced back. The college was created in 1969 in response to student demands. It remains only such college of its kind in the nation. Today on the campaign trail Hillary Clinton is crisscrossing the state of South Carolina looking for a decisive victory ahead of the democratic primary. On saturday she held a town hall meeting telling supporters she is proud that president obama plans to move forward with a Supreme Court nomination in the wake of justice antonin scalias death. I sure hope the president chooses a true progressive what will stand up for the values and the interests of the people of this country who understand that you need to protect the right to vote of a person, not right of a corporation to bay an election, who will understand that we still need the Voting Rights act to be enforced because too many people are being deprived of their right to vote in this country. Madeline al bright met with volunteers in texas. Vermont senator Bernie Sanders is courting voters in iowa or ohio, i should say. It appears hes focusing on super tuesday and beyond. All of the political geniuses out there are figuring out this thing. How it could be . How can you actually run a Wing Campaign with an average contribution of 27 . But i think would people are saying is not only are they supportive of what were fighting for but theyre saying Something Else. Theyre saying were going to do everything that we can to make sure that billionaires do not buy elections. The latest Quinnipiac University poll shows clinton leading sanders with 55 of democrats saying they will vote for her compared with 40 for sanders. Ohio holds its primary on march 15th. March 1st is super tuesday. 12 states and American Samoa will hold primaries and caucuses on tuesday. The republican candidates for texas are in texas for their final debate before super tuesday. Donald trump will be front and center with senators marco rubio and ted cruz on each side of him, then you have ben carson and john kasich. We are joined by our political consultant randy with what we can expect. Welcome. Thanks for having me. Lets start with the debate. Do you expect donald trump to throw the knockout punch, or is it cruz and rubio who is going to throw the punch and send them back to new york . Certainly the temptation for marco rubio and ted cruz is going to be to gang up on donald trump and try to attack. They have to. Well, hes leading the polls. Hes leading the delegate count, and the Republican Party establishment desperately want for donald trump not to be the nominee. But its more complicated than that. Because for cruz to have any chance of defeating trump, he pretty much has to knock out rubio first. And for rubio to have any chance against trump, he has to income out trump first. Seems like they just cant quit. Republican Party Leaders are privately behind the scenes reportedly making calls to the likes of john kasich and ben carson saying get out now before its too late. Its all like a complicated crazy game of survivor. Do you gang up and attack the guy who is leading . Or do you attack someone else that could be the lone survivor there . Its hard in a brief debate. Randy, you brought up delegates. Gop establishment is reportedly worried now about trump. But lets talk numbers. Super tuesday, 11 states, 595 delegates at play. Donald trump is leading now but it could be a game changer if Something Else picks up, if cruz, rubio pick up some big numbers . First of all the polls for super tuesday show that donald trump is leading in most every state except texas. And thats ted cruzs home state. What about florida. Florida is march 15th. Down the line two, weeks later. Hes leading in florida, too. But heres where rubio and cruz at least have a little shred of hope that rate now most of the states are awarded proportionately. Its not winner take all. Down the road, more of the states are winner take all. Some of the bigger states. Not california. It used to be in california but not any longer. So theyre hopeful even though theyre losing now if they win a few later they could catch up. But time is running out. Does tonight matter . Are people still listening to what theyre saying, or have most people made up their minds . I would imagine most people who are following closely have probably made up their mind, but in the super tuesday states i imagine theyre more closely focused than they had been. Yes it does matter, because again i cant emphasize strongly enough the state of panic, at least the state of panic that i hear Republican Party leaders are in over the possibility of donald trump becoming their nominee. They dont want donald trump to be the party logo. So there are calls for kasich and carson to drop out and support rubio. There are calls from conservative columnists urging republican billionaires who have so far reportedly been sitting this out to donate and pool their money to blitzkrieg the airways with attack adds on donald trump. But every time he gets hit, he just carries the momentum. Hes never lost the momentum really. And theres another problem. The other problem is right now all tess establishment Republican Party officials are rushing in to support rubio hoping to buck up his candidacy becks their preferred alternate of the ones left. But the problem is trump is doing so well becks antiestablishment. So what does an establishment endorsement mean . Heres something to keep in mind that i think is really important. For all the fretting by the Republican Party officials in some ways they really only have themselves to blame. For years now Congressional Republicans have been making promises to their con stitt you quints that they couldnt possibly keep that they would shrink the size of government that they would reverse the rules on abortion that they would get rid of obamacare, they would lower taxes. And now its coming back to bite them. Time and time again they have disappointed their own con stitt you quints. So its not surprising that their own con stitt wents have tuned them out. If someone you love keeps making you a promise and breaking the promise, you may start looking elsewhere. Some say donald trump is making crazy promises, building a wall and making them pay for it. Were out of time. We could talk to you for the whole show. We forgot clinton. Would you say South Carolina, clinton is going to take that. Thats what the polls suggest. Up next on the four on, two Golden State Warriors star steph curry set to visit a school to encourage students to drink water, but it is who is behind that message that has some people questioning the visit. We have been warming up all week, but friday could be different out there. Coming up ill break down shower chances over the next few days. And right now on our facebook page, people are calling her mustache kitten because her coloring makes her look like shes got a mustache. Her story is catching on and shedding light on pet abandonment. You can find that story on our facebook page. A quick check outside. 880 by the coliseum not bad at all. The four on 2 will be right back. The red carpet is being rolled out in los angeles. The 88th annual Academy Awards are set for this sunday. Millions will watch the best take home an oscar for their achievements. Common sense media is here to talk about how to discuss the red carpet with your children. Caroline, thanks for coming here today. So oscars. Big deal. Like the super bell for actors, right . So youre saying that all of the glitz and glamour, this is the perfect time to talk to our children about what was at these events . Exactly. Its not like you need to be like the debbie downer, this is not good for kids. Watch it and enjoy it if you like the red carpet. But you know what, you can also teach your kids a little bit of media criticism as youre watching. So you have some talking points for us. Lets start with entertainment in marketing value when it comes to turn it op. Its an hours long event. What about to entertainment in marketing value . This is a different type of show than kids watch, than any other show that kids watch. Its really about promotion and publicity. You can teach your kids that. You can say, what is the show about . What impressions do you have after watching the show . You can ask those questions to dig a little deeper about the purpose. You can say, who benefits from appearing on this . What about when theyre wearing a certain dress . This is made by soandso. Exactly. Theres no other shows the kids watch like that. Diamonds are beautiful, butt kind of celebrates superficial values. And thats what we want to help our kids realize theyre watching. What about the focus of the appearance, especially when it comes to the ladies, either criticism or rave reviews when it comes to how they look head to toe . Exactly right. Kids really do absorb these messages. They cant absorb the message that appearance is all that matters. But you as a parent with want to say, its not all that matters. What do you admire . Ask your kids what do you admire about people . You can say who is missing from the red carpet . Theres a huge controversy about who was nominated. You can see where are the africanamericans . Where are the people what have a larger body type . Those types of questions are whats going to get your kids to realize what theyre watching and have a little bit more of a critical view. It sounds like you can make it more lake a Family Experience watching it as opposed to just saying, look at that dress. You can make at more well rounded and talk about, caroline what is the ceremony about. Whats the point of it . Its about art and achievement. These are hollywood values, the red carpet. So we want to sort of interpret that for our kids and say this is really about art and achievement. A lot of kids have the achievement experience of having been in a play. You can say, when have you worked hard for something . How were you recognized . Who would you name in a speech . At the end of the day we want our kids to realize that its effort and achievement that really matters, not your appearance. And tolls realize they dont roll out of bed looking like. That i covered an oscars about three years ago, caroline. I was in that dress from noon to midnight, the longest day. Best experience, but it takes they have groups of people around one lady doing hair, makeup, touching them, make are sure, right . Exactly. We want our kids to realize its work to get to look that way. People dont get out of bed like that, and thats not the expectation that we have for you, for your kid. Its whats inside that really matters. Good advice, caroline. Thank you. Mike, mark, over to you guys. Ladies, talk about red carpet weather. Did it reach 70 degrees . Mark will have the answer. It certainly felt like it. I was in San Francisco working on a story, and i could just walk around enjoying the story. Shorts and flip flops. Looking outside here, you can see looking out towards the oakland estuary a bit of haze. San jose in the 70s for today. Everybody cooling off in your friday forecast. Possibly a few showers as well. Heres the latest on live storm tracker. You can see the clear skies over a good portion of california except we have some high clouds approaching cape mendocino. Theres a weak front out there. Definitely clouds and cooler temperatures for your friday forecast. Possibly well be tracking a few rain showers especially in the northern portions of the state that could be clipping marts of the bay area. Look at that san jose number. 76 degrees. Livermore 70, novato 7 2, and santa rosa checking in 72 degrees as well. Of course its been a very unimpressive month in terms of rainfall. In fact, these are all the rainy days so far for friday. Theres the chance of a shower. San francisco picking up under an inch of rain. February nearly 4. 5 inches of rain. This month has been atypical. Were expecting a lot more. Overnight lows, first thing tomorrow morning in the 40s to around 50. Santa rosa 42. San jose 47. Livermore in the mid40s. Heres the plan tomorrow in San Francisco. 7 00 a. M. , partly cloudy, 54. Well take this into the afternoon hours. More clouds, increasing throughout the day. 64 degrees by lunchtime. A slight chance of a shower, probably in the form of a few sprinkles by tomorrow evening between about 6 00 and 7 00. So High Pressure has really been in charge of our weather over the past few days. Tomorrow it is going to move out to the east as we showed that you front to approach our coastline. With that were going definitely cool off the temperatures. Numbers coming down a good five to ten degrees. Primary rainfall to the north of the bay area. Heres our futurecast model taking us into your friday. Definitely some clouds bi12 00 friday. Not too much in the south bay. More clouds up in the north bay. And then you can see throughout the evening hours of friday that system falls apart. So theres going to be clouds and maybe a few light showers. Saturday morning starting off with clouds. Skies becoming partly cloudy, then the slight chance of a shower into sunday. So these are all not much of a factor to change plans, but a little bit of a clang the weather pattern. The significant rainfall we need not showing up yet. San jose 68, san mateo 65, hassle mon bay 62 Half Moon Bay 62 degrees. Partly sunny saturday. Slight chance sunday. Cant put too many rain clouds in the five day. Partly sunny skies for monday and tuesday. Eventually were going get some rainfall. Coming up well talk about the pattern change that could be happening beyond the fiveday. Month of march. It seems like tomorrow is better than first thought. We beefed up the cloud cover a little bit. Maybe instead of four drops well do nine drops. Mark, thanks. Steph curry says water is his drink, and hes set to talk to an Oakland School about choosing water over sugary drinks. But the controversy that currys visit is sparking when the four on 2 returns. Now with a classleading 107 miles on a charge, the nissan leaf is the best selling electric car in america. Nfl. Com is reporting Colin Kaepernicks agents have requested permission to seek a trade. The report comes just one day after niners gm said he absolutely expected the quarterback to remain a 49er. The niners benched kaepernick in week nine. A visit from steph curry would certainly cause a lot of excitement but one in particular is also stirring up controversy. The Golden State Warrior will be at Martin Luther king jr. Element tree school on march 8th to encourage students to drink more water instead of sugary drinks. Its part of his endorsement deal with the Water Filtration company brita which is promoting the assembly. Some people say his appearance raises questions about advertising and taking that inside schools. Opponents told the chronicle while the event is about Drinking Water which is healthy it opens the door to other companies trying to get p to talk to our children. That could influence the children and pressure parents into using certain products. Oakland Unified School District officials tell the chronicle that his appearance does not violate district policy. In this case it might be different because it is water as opposed to some cool new sneaker. Senates just water. But i understand the concern because theres a name attached to the. It lasted just four days but the people power revolution in the philippines in the mid 80s reshaped the nation and brought about the end of the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos. Ken comanich was photojournalist at the time and won a Pulitzer Prize. He is with us now where the photos are on display. Thanks for being with us. Thanks for having me. Im honored to be here on the day when Ferdinand Marcos fled the philippines. Ken, i had a chance to look through some of the photos in your book. They are striking. They tell the story of pain, but yet percent variance and strength. Can you take us back to what it was like for you when you were there capturing these images . Wow, lets see. I started traveling in 1984. I traveled with phil bronstein, what went on to be ted tore of the examiner. We were doing stories across the philippines in 84 and 85 about the deteriorating social conditions. In late 85 marcos called a snap election, and the pictures on the wall are from all of that. The campaign, the election, the revolution as well as the early days. Its a real david and goliath story. When youre sitting there taking the pictures you really know what youre getting, or due not really realize it until a few hours or a few days or even years later when you look back and you look at the photographs you took . Well, its a different of course, when youre i was in the News Business like you, and you are, and i know for a fact that you dont quite know what you have until you come back and you look at the film, or in this case, digital days, you look at your files. Theres always a surprise there. Theres always a little nugget, a little sin a little synchrocity. You went back seven times and tracked down some of those you took pictures of 30 years ago. How was that journey going back . Thats something we dont get to do any more in the newspaper business. A lot of papers are closing the bureaus. Its very dangerous to travel overseas these days with the beheadings and everything going on and some of the more radicalized parts of the world. This was just a gift. It was great to go back and first of all make sure i got the story right, and then second of all to make sure that i was able to add to what i knew about the people in the pictures by asking their opinion about what they were doing before the revolution, what they were doing when i took their picture, and how their life is today. So we were able to get all that into the tail end of the book here which is this book here. Speaking of that back all the wonderful photos which one is your favorite . Do you have a favorite out of all of them . I was talking with one of the producers earlier. 30 years ago today it was the inauguration of corazon aquino. Its pretty much a press culture picture, but her hand is still in the air and the people are already clapping. So i can say pretty with authority, i think that this was the exact moment she became the Vice President the philippines. Moments like that keep me happy. You should be happy. A fantastic collection. I think that particular photograph has captured so many different emotions there, as did all of them in the back. A lot of powerful images. We appreciate your time. Have a fantastic exhibit. Thank you. There are thousands of supplements out there. Some for general health, others for things like weight loss and decreasing anxiety, but these pills are not approved by the fda. What you need to know before you buy your next bolts of supplements. Another day of full sunshine. 70s across parts of the bay area. Coming up the changes your friday forecast, and i will let you know if we have any real rain to talk about on the long range weather maps. Lets take a look at another bridge, the san mateo bridge, 92 both directions. Not bad at all. The fur on two will be right back. A powerful storm slammed the east coast today. The National Weather service is reporting at least 16 tornadoes. People in virginia say a tornado hit without much warning. Three people were killed. A laundromat was among the structures destroyed. One man says the twister lifted his car off the ground. The governor has already toured the area and declared a state of emergency. Flying in on the helicopter you can see for miles and miles entire trees snapped over like match sticks. Then you come into the Population Centers and debris and the trees and debris just strewn everywhere. A basement partially collapsed in maryland and trapped a man there trying to check his sump pump. The weather caused thousands of Flight Cancellations in those particular areas. Gophers of several other states have also declared states of emergency including florida, louisiana, also north carolina. ,herbal supplements are a 15 billion business. In 2012 there were 55,000 different supplement products out there on the market. While the federal government he all of waits prescription drugs and medications, supplements are kind of in a league of their own. They dont require fda approval as long as they market the product without making any claims it can treat or cure a medical condition. And that has sparked calls for reform from some lawmakers and medical experts. For example, last february the new York State Attorney general ordered retailers like wal mart, target, and walgreens to stop selling herbal supplements until they could clarify the ingredients. In november the Justice Department announced more than 100 criminal and civil cases against the marketers of supplements that contain ingredients that were not listed or made unsupported claims about product. Whether it be for general wellness, immune tee boost, weight loss, what do you need to know before you buy a supplement . Right now im joined by a pharmacist, awe thorks and consultant. He is here on behalf of the convention which is a nonprofit that sets standards for medicines as well as Food Ingredients in dietary supplements. The first question, whats the danger for you . What is your First Priority . The First Priority is to make sure that whatever is on the label is actually in the bolts. Not just the ingredients but the dose. Im looking right there and it says in big letters iron. Thats kind of where i would stop, but i should not stop there. You should look at the des as well. 65 milligrams. But the problem is we eased some supplements on the market where it might say iron, 65 milligrams, not this particular one, and thats not whats in the bolts. Thats what the problem has been. This is particular true if youve got something thats promising weight loss, muscle gain, increased la bye dough. As a consumer libido. Some of these things have been found to contain things that were not listed on the ingredient. This has a mark called the usp mark. This is a program they started to verify supplements and vitamins. Basically what theyre trying to do is set standards for the supplement and multivitamin industry. As they do with prescription drugs. If you want to bring a prescription or nonprescription drug on the market, it has to meet the standards set biusp. So this is voluntary. So you talk about congress. I looked up that 1994, the Dietary Supplement Health and education act of 1994 which exempts drugs from regulation if they are called supplements. In the end do you think its up to lawmakers to change that law . Well, we started down the slippery slope in 1994 when they decided to basically take the fda out of the equation when it came to vitamins and supplements. By taking the fda out they categorized these as foods. They are regulated as foods until something happens. If something happens, the fda can step in wean forcement action. There are many calls now for there to be stricter regulations, even from the supplement industry itself. Jim, i saw this in 1994. In 1994 there were 4,000 product out there that considered themselves to be supplements. In 20 12, this is according to a fshes article i was reading today, 55,000. Astoppedding. So people are making money off of what sometimes we dont know what it is. Exactly. That is a big problem. You want to make sure you have quality, purity, poo tennessee. You want to make sure there are not contaminants. One way to do that look for u s p verified. These are not the only ones, by the way. Just a representation. But there are lots out there that dont have that and dont follow certain standards. Thats where you can get into trouble. Read the labels, look for the usp. Talk with your doctor and pharmacist about whether you need the supplement, because sometimes you dont. Sometimes may friends tell me i do, or my wife, take a supplement, or the internet. Dr. Google. Jim, thanks for taking the time. My pleasure. In the Weather Center now talking about changes on the way. We love to say that. Changes are on the way. But sort of changes . Were going cool down to the 60s for tomorrow. Winter. Today though 76 degrees in san jose. We have but in the clear all weak long. Monday, tuesday, wednesday, and today locked in this dry weather pattern and this warm weather pattern as well but that will be changing a little bit as you can see our live camera looking out towards the oakland estuary. You can see some people in the water. A little bit of a breeze trying to develop. More of an on shore breeze. You heard about the big system, the storm system around the eastern seaboard. There you can see it kick out towards boston. They have the active weather. We just have the quiet weather pattern in place. We have 8 2aeu7 San Francisco, 83 in phoenix, warmer temperatures, but right now it is 33 degrees in chicago minneapolis checking in 30, degrees. Thats where the cold air is focused. Out toward the west we have the warm air. On the satellite a few high clouds approaching the northwest tip. A closer look at bay Area Temperatures still showing the 70s for san jose, 76 degrees, livermore 70s, concord 73 degrees. Typically this time of year were talking rain and very low snow levels here in the bay area. That is not the case but we still have quite a bit swrirpt. As far as santa rosa mostly cloudy skies for tomorrow with thickening clouds and temperatures mainly in the 60s for afternoon highs. Low to mid60s. We are tracking a weather system offshore. So friday morning, 9 00, sunny skies in the south bay, but then more clouds approaching the north bay. You will see more clouds focused in the north bay. Not too much green showing in the bay area. This system fizzled out. But theres still some clouds. By friday night that will be the best chance of picking up a few light showers. Best chance in the north bay even at midnight we could have some spotty drizzle out there. Thats about it. High pressure has been in charge of our weather all week long producing the warmer temperatures, aboveaverage temperatures. It scoots out to the east for us tomorrow as this system approaches our coast lane. Definitely cooler temperatures coming down five to ten degrees. The primary focus for the rain will be to the north of the bay area. Were looking long term for some rainfall. It looks like sunday just a few extra clouds. Rain focused to our north. Slight chance of a spring cal here in the bay area but its almost like we have this deflect tore shield keeping the storms out in the pacific. With that that dry weather pattern remains in place. But by march as we head into march, maybe a weekend, talking about a pattern change. Its still too early to go into too much detail. Forecast highs, lots of 60. Instead of the 70s were going to trim back a few degrees. Gilroy 70s, Half Moon Bay 62. Here is a look ahead. Your fiveday forecast. No major storm to talk about. Just the opposite. Maybe a chance of a sprinkle friday evening. A slight chance sunday. Monday and tuesday partly sunny skies. Mike and keba, sometime between march 5th and march 10th we will see if this happens, we could have a significant pattern change for the bay area. Maybe more significant rainfall. I will look like a genius if that happens. You are a general i couldnt say. Appreciate that. Lets check in now with julie with a look at stories for ktvu fox 2 news at 5 00. Quite the scary scene in the city. More on what led to that frightening accident. It hear from the mother after she and her baby were almost hit when an outofcontrol driver came crashing through a building. Major water issues at one school. This comes as the fbi director told congress that he doesnt believe the fbi claims that it could impact all apple customers. The code that the judge has directed apple to write works only on this one phone and so the idea of it getting out and working on my phone or your phone, at least the experts tell me, is not a real thing. James comey says this case will not set any legal precedent because it will affect only one phone but apples ceo tim cook says if you create the software it could be used on any iphone. What is at stake here is can the government tell apple to write software that we believe would make hundreds of millions of customers vulnerable around the world including the u. S. Tim cook told abc that he will fight the court order all the way to the Supreme Court if need be. The fbi says questions about Law Enforcement acts to encrypted data should be decided by congress to avoid disputes like this in the future. Thats all for us on the four.
