Things werent going their way. Now, the judge actually read the verdict this morning. Raymond shrimp boy chow found guilty on all 162 counts including the murder of chinatown businessman alan leung, and money laundering. We are outraged, and we are disturbed that in the United States of america, five cooperating witnesses, informants of the lowest possible moral caliber combined in an effort to free themselves and convicted, from our perspective, an innocent person. Reporter the defense also had some pretty harsh words for the judge. They accused him of being unfair, cutting funding to the defense. They said that he is, in essence what prevent their client from having a fair trial. They showed pictures of these victims with bullet holes in their face, blood roping down their face. They admitted in closing argument, theyre not saying hes connected to that killing at all. Reporter chows sentencing is set for march 23rd. He said to his attorney after the verdict was read, dont worry, we will prevail in the second round. So, of course, we will be here. Beg in the courtroom and seeing chows expression, it was pretty expressionless. He was very stoic. Definitely hard to get a read on him but his attorneys say he handled this very gracefully. I heard the defense attorney blaming the jurors for basically believing those so called snitches in this case. Im curious, did any of the jurors come forward and talk about the case . Reporter no, they didnt. They would not talk to us. We also tried to get an interview with the leung family, and they would not speak with us. The prosecution has not released a statement. They say its a little tricky in commenting on the case because this is actually connected to a bunch of other cases, seeing as how there were 26 other defendants. And so there is pending litigation, which makes them unable to say much. Tara, you mentioned the leung family. So they were there in court. Any reaction . Did they say anything, at least as the verdict was being read or any emotion on their faces . Reporter well, obviously you would imagine that they had quite some relief, but i think everybodys eyes were sort of glued to the defendant at that time. We wanted to see exactly what was going through his mind. He was very charismatic on the stand. The cameras were not allowed in the courtroom but from being there he was very smiley, tried to engage the jurors, and i guess that charm simply didnt pay off. Well wait for the sentence. Tara moriarty live in San Francisco. In other news, the Sacramento Man arrested yesterday on terrorism charges was in court today. The 23yearold is charged with making a false statement involving international terrorism. A new report released by the Santa Clara CountySheriffs Office sheds light into how many jail employees have been disciplined for misconduct in recent years. Of all the investigations from the past six years, 22 deputies were fired for wrong doing and 27 were suspended. The complaints ranged from off Duty Officers driving turned influence, to use of force, and some deputies who were accused of having inappropriate relationships with inmates. In many cases we will see a gross misconduct, and their background is totally clear, their poly graph is. So im not sure anyone in Law Enforcement really has the answer about why. But its something that we continue to evaluate. All the information gathered in the report will be handed over to the blue ribbon commission. It is an Oversight Committee that was started late last year. It was formed to study and recommend changes to custody operations after three deputies were arrested for the beating death vin mate michael tyreee. San Francisco Mayor ed lee was sworn in for his second terms today but the ceremony was interrupted by protesters chanting. That was during the inauguration. It continued, despite the loud chants to fire the mayor. When i see an epidemic of Police Violence that is spreading to my own town, its adding insult to injury. I wont stop until we build better trust between Law Enforcement and the communities theyre sworn to protect, especially young people of color. Mayor lee also says in his second term he will focus on affordable housing, homelessness, transportation and the citys Public Safety network. Leigh was initially appointed mayor in 2011 after mayor gavin newsom resigned to take office as lieutenant governor. He pledged not to run in that election but after others encouraged and campaigned for him, he broke that promise and eventually ran and won the title of mayor. Once diagnosed it can actually kill you within weeks, as it did to my own father back in 1979. Joining us right now sem ma harper, a volunteer and chair of the San Francisco branch of the pancreatic cancer action network. Talking about my dad, that was 37 years ago. That still ticks me off to this day, because i felt like i never got to know him. Twhreas story between yourself and your dad . My dad and best friend was diagnosed 11 months ago with a pancreatic tumor. Its a large unresectable tumor which means inoperable. His situation is a little bit different in that with neuro endocrine tumors they are rare, and chemotherapy is not an option association,s treated via hormone injection. You were here on the west coast, and hes not here. Right, he was back in chicago. So i was back in chicago pretty quickly, and it was a sharp hemoglobin drop that was causing him to bleed out. Theres a picture. That a recent picture . That was in october. Your wedding . At my wedding. Congratulations, by the way. Thank you. Good news in regards to this and some bad news. So the American Cancer Society published their cancer statistics, 2016 report. Major takeaway from this is that pancreatic cancer deaths, and you know this, emma, because you told us about itl surpass Breast Cancer this year. It will now be third, Breast Cancer beg fourth. Whats your reaction to this report . So i actually see it in a more hopeful way, because there were Great Strides made with Breast Cancer. There was really a lot of awareness, a lot of support and a lot of funding going to that cause, and i think it showed real results. So i think if we can rally those same forces to fight against pancreatic cancer i think we can see something similar. Isnt it kind of a wakeup call or slap in the face to researchers, that maybe you need to start doing more . Not that they havent been doing enough. And im in the an expert in it, but, hey, lets dive into this a little deeper. Absolutely. And i think more Clinical Trials and definitely more Intense Research needs to be done. I told you during the commercial break, and im sharing it with the view, but last month i had an mri based on my symptoms, and may dads experience with pancreatic cancer, and i think we have a full screen of symptoms that show up, and i know theres lower back pain, the skin tone, weight loss, depression, everything came back fine for me, but is it important, you think to get tested early . Definitely. Early detection is sort of the key to solving this eventually, i think. Because some people may look at that list and go, well, maybe i just have a stomachache. Could be a lot of things. In june, weve got a big 5k. Talk about it. So we have the purple stride 5k on june 11th of this year where everyone will gather together to show their support and to raise awareness and raise funding for pancreatic cancer. Justin herman plaza right near the embarcadero. And it ends at chrissy field if. Did it last year. Were going to be moving it to a more central location. More funding, more research, get the cure. Yes. Emma harper, thank you for coming in. Thank you for having me. Over to keba and mark. All right, mike, thank you. We are in the Weather Center now. I know we need the rain but its been a nice break to dry out. These breaks are so important, keba. But another round is coming. Theres more rain on the way, and that in fact is the forecast. We look at the radar, but i also look at the live camera as well because thats the real thing. Were looking outside and the roads. Theres clouds. But still dry. I seated moving in with the green. Its been a very productive week here not only for the north but also the south and our entire state. A lot of this green not reaching the ground just yet. This represents rainfall about 20,000 feet up above our heads right now. But things will continue to moisten up. As a result, we will be tracking scattered rain showers. Even if youre covered now with green, possibly a few sprinkles under the green area, a few light showers paying us a visit. We are showing 50s out near oakland, fairfield 49 degrees. Since october 1st, santa rosa has picked up around 13 inches of rain. Thats 82 of average. San francisco over 9 inches. Thats 94 of average. San jose 6. 33 inches. Thats above average. 115 . Were going to add to the rain buckets as we head into the weekend and into next week as well. Overnight lows, first thing saturday morning, already saturday, talking 40s. San francisco 49, and we will have some rain showers to start out your day on saturday. So lots of clouds. Hear we are 7 00 a. M. , 49 degrees. Were going to hold on to that chance. Here we are 12 00, 56, and by 6 00, mostly cloudy skies, 50 degrees for tomorrow night. This has been the story all week long. A very active storm pattern out here in the pacific. Weve been tracking multiple systems. The next one moves in tonight. Another one could youing up for monday another one cueing up for monday. Rainfall will be developing tonight, and then some scattered showers first thing saturday morning, and that chance will linger into the afternoon hours, but the bulk of the activity tomorrow should be for the Morning Hours on saturday. Here we are this evening, some clouds, some rain showers developing, or at least some sprinkles out there, then the main action moves in overnight, 1 00 a. M. 6 00 a. M. This might wake you up first thing tomorrow morning. Then for saturday afternoon, mostly cloudy skies, still the chance of a showers, and then into sunday this is sunday, 4 00 p. M. , a slight chance of a few sprinkles, a few light showers later in the day bey mid to late afternoon, and bey the evening hours as well. Thats moisture in advance of another storm developing offshore. Temperatures for tomorrow, lots of 50s out there for afternoon highs, santa rosa 51, san jose 56, Half Moon Bay 54 degrees. Your fiveday forecast, there you can pick out some showers into saturday, increasing clouds on sunday. Theres a slight chance of a shower on sunday, then on monday when we start the new work week we dont want to think about that just yet, mike and keba, but we want to get you set up. Morning rain, then possibly another system for wednesday. If you are heading to lake tahoe we will have an update on the mountains because they have a Winter Weather advisory. More snow with this system for tonight. Smiles all around. Give yourself some extra time if youre going up the hill. It was an unexpected sight as bill cosby arrived at the courthouse to be arraigned. Today in the verdict we are talking about the criminal case against the comedian and asking why did prosecutors in pennsylvania file charges and los angeles did not. The four on 2 will be right back. Oakland and San FranciscoPolice Worked together to arrest a man wanted for a shooting in downtown oakland tuesday morning. Police say Surveillance Video shows the man in an argument with someone on broadway and 13th street. You see it there. That was him in the brown jacket, white pants. Eventually he pulls out a gun, fires several shots, then runs o. He missed the person he was arguing with but hit an innocent woman who was pushing a stroller at the time. She is expected to be okay. Police arrested him last night. In this weeks the verdict we talk about a real life case. But first, bill cosby. Prosecutors decided not to file charges in two separate cases, one of them because it exceeded the statute of limitations. I asked our legal analyst how big a celebrity trial it would be if it goes that far. Oh, beyond huge. As you said, heres dad, heres the dad of the country, the great guy, the great comedian. Who would have ever thought he would be accused of Something Like this and using quaaludes to drug women . Its shocking. Remember, there are an awful lot of other women that are making the same type of allegations. And thats what cosby has to worry about. Why are you waiting so long to file . Its a different prosecutor. They didnt go through with it, but now all of a sudden this prosecutor is like, well, we might as well roll the dice. Or does he really after case . This case happened in 2004. That woman shows up in pennsylvania, goes to the prosecutor and said, look, heres what happened to me. That prosecutor im sure looked at all the other women that are making this same allegation, and thats what cosby has to look toward. If youre defending bill cosby, do you want this to go to trial . You know, its going to be interesting, because it depends on what the judge lets into the trial. If he just lets in this accuser, all right, he just lets in this accuse tore say, look, i was with cosby, he gave me quaaludes, and by the way, at a civil deposition, in his civil case, he admitted, under oath, at a depo, like i say, yeah, i used quaaludes. I used to give them out to people. But you cant use that in a criminal case. Why not . Thats my question. Why not . Now, what the prosecutor will want to do, he will say, jung, weve got 30 other women staying same thing. We would like to bring them in as prior similars, not this woman in isolation. This woman in isolation with a jury, assuming the jury doesnt know about the others, and good luck on finding a jury that hasnt heard, but assuming that, the jury is going to have an awful hard time making a decision on that womans word alone. What do you think, guilty or not guilty, bill cosby . Ive got to tell you, im a defense attorney, but now ill step back. How many women are saying the same thing, coming up with the same story . They got him. They got him. Pre limb set for january 14th. More courtroom drama. Lets move on to making a murderer, the 10part netflix series, the talk of the nation. Steve avery is a wisconsin man who is exonerated after spending 18 years in prison for a crime did he not commit only to be arrested and ultimately convicted for a murder for which he also maintains his innocence. You think this is gripping. Oh, i will tell you, ive done this criminal law as a prosecutor, and as a defense attorney, for over 35 years. I tell you what, when my wife and i sat down to watch this, we started saturday night at 7 00. You didnt stop. I stopped because i fell dead asleep at 3 00 in the morning. Its that gripping. Its a great story. It gives an in sight into a lot of what goes on in the criminal justice system. Is it good to get the American Public involved in cases like this . Yeah, it is. Due like the way its being presented . Yeah, bick sat there, and my wife at times would really react to this, very emotionally. I cant believe it, i cant believe what the judge did i said, babe, that happens to us all the time. Im telling you, theres a whole different treatment that people get in certain areas versus other areas. So this brings people to take a hard look at both the courts and the criminal justice system, the police, and the two defense attorneys. I just loved them. Making a murderer, you got me hook. Thats michael cardoza, and thats this edition of the verdict. Hillary clinton in the bay area meeting with voters, raising money for her campaign. Coming up, were examining the role california plays in politics, especially when it comes to fundraising. A war of words between north korea and south korea as both turn up their speakers and blast propaganda across the border. Why this is a concern for world leaders. Bernie sappedders supporters disrupt an overflowing rally for donald trump in vermont, sappedders home state. Thousands waited in line last night in the freezing cold for hours to get into the event there in burlington. Now, protesters also lined up on the streets outside the Trump Campaign which offered tickets to 20,000 people but the venue only seats 1400. Bernie sanders is in iowa ahead of next months caucuses. The latest poll from the Des Moines Register and bloomberg shows that Hillary Clinton ladies in that state bey 10 percentage points. Sanders campaign has launched an extensive Ground Campaign there in iowa. When i began this campaign, we had zero money. We had no political organization, and maybe most significantly, we had very little name recognition. I think its probably fair to say that eight and a half months ago, maybe 75, 80 of the people in iowa didnt even know who i was, let alone what i stood for. We have come a long way in eight and a half months. Well, on monday sanders will share the stage with clinton for the iowa brown and black president ial forum. Democratic front runner Hillary Clinton is here in the bay area attending the family new years celebration at the palace of feign arts. Tonight she wraps up the day at the home of greg sands. We are talking about the campaign trail and joined by political analyst brian. The event today, 2700 per person. Why here in california, and what can afford this . Well, california has all kinds of money that during a Political Year is collected by candidates who come into california, even though california is a decided state. Its going to go to the democrats, and it is going to go to Hillary Clinton. But theres a lot of money here, and theres people who want to meet these various candidates, but in a state where the race is already decided, one wonders whether its a little cynical. Do you think we should be allowed into these highpriced events . The candidates are running for the oval office. My feeling is the media ought to have access at some point to these events. Being inside somebodys home, thats questionable, but what happens is the media gets to see somebody driving by in a limo, waving out the window. In a state like california, such a delegate rich state, i dont think its right that people should just come in, take the money and run. Brian this is nothing new. If you go back to the 2012 campaign, california was apparently, according to the l. A. Times, a top source of campaign money. You had then president obama, 62. 3 million, mitt romney, 41. 3 million, others raising all sorts of millions. When does california say, no more, were not going to be the bank, or will this continue on . It will continue on. California residents of means, like in Silicon Valley and other places, have no problem writing these huge checks. And they will continue to do so. Some of these receptions, by the way, are fairly small, but theyre big ticket items. And so the people who are putting the money up get fairly extraordinary access to these candidates. Hey, brian, Bernie Sanders, hes like 11, 12 points back. Hear in the state of california, if he doesnt win the caucuses, if he doesnt win New Hampshire does he quit . Im not sure, mike, because he is if it were a larger field, i would say yes, probably. But he has a roll in this campaign, and the role for Bernie Sanders is to continue pushing Hillary Clinton more to the progressive issues, more to the left, off the center and to the left. And to the extent that he can do that, hes accomplished his mission, but he will not be on the ticket and hes not going to win the nomination. Well, brian, lets talk about the republicans. What is going on with this Donald Trumpted Cruz controversy, donald trump trying to say, im not the one bringing up questioning whether ted cruz could actually be president. Its sort of more of the same. Its a food fight half the time on the republican side of the aisle for this particular office. You have way too many people still in the game, and they have to knock each other down. Obviously trump is going after cruz because cruz is doing very well at the moment in iowa and New Hampshire. So hes got to drag cruz down, and his tendency, naturally, to go pretty hard at somebody. But the law isnt behind him here, right . No, no. I mean, youre the person saying ted cruz can become president if elected. This is the kind of thing that trump does to soil things. If he can get people thinking twice about something, hes accomplished his goal. And as you know, the one thing he is, is a master of getting Media Coverage for what hes thinking about or saying. And you cant take that away from him. The issue is that ted cruz was born in canda. Were going to let you go, but ted cruz is on that 28 county bus tour. He ripped donald trump today for it not having grass roots campaign. He said ill never have my name on a plane, like donald trump. Im on a bus, im going county to county. County to county, person to person. Exactly. Brian, thanks for joining us. Have a great weekend. Take care. Were going to switch gears now. Were following breaking news. Bart police say possible kidnapping is happening in downtown San Francisco. Thats what theyre reporting. Thats what they are investigating. It was reportedly at the montgomery street station in the past halfhour so this is very recent. You are looking at video from skyfox. We are told what happened, a mother was on the platform, screaming that her baby was missing. A man jumped onto another train with the baby. Police believe this man is the babys father. At this point they are working to get to the man and find the baby. There are delays in that area. Again, we are still following this. As soon as we get you any more information we will bring it to you. Tensions are escalating between north and south korea after the reported testing of the Hydrogen Bomb inside north korea this week. South korea is fighting back with crossborder broadcasts of antinorth propaganda. They are also blairing pop music across the border, which is banned in north korea. Its a bit of a sake logical warfare. You will recall north korea started their own crossborder broadcasts the day after it had announced it successfully tested a Hydrogen Bomb. Our military is now closely watching north koreas movement. If north korea commits any additional provocation our military will strongly deal with it and harshly punish it. So wednesdays nuclear test is the fourth for north korea but the first time they have claimed to have used a Hydrogen Bomb. Now, the last time south korea blasted broadcasts across the border, the two nations exchanged artillery fire. In weather we have been watching the clouds move back into the picture and also some rain showers approaching as well. Coming up, the timing of the heaviest downpours, the impact on your weekend coming up, and also more rain chances lining up for next week. One last look outside. 680 choppy in the northbound direction. The four on two will be right back. Target is one of the nations largest retailers. Its been trying to rebound since that massive data breach that compromised 40 million account of its customers. Target took a hit after that but it is now in the midst of a turnaround. With us now, consumer psychologist kip yaro to explain how they did it. Kip, thanks for being with us. My pleasure. So target has now had five consecutive quarters of these increases, at least in certain key sales. If we could talk about these key sales and what its actually telling the target executives. Right, exactly. You know, their new ceo, Brian Cornell, his philosophy, lets not do the wrong things better, lets do better things. And that has genuinely resonated with a new consumer mind. So todays consumers really have different motivations and needs. The ceos that you are trying to do it the old way but do it a little better are missing the mark. So what Brian Cornell did was say, listen, we need more excitement about shopping. Its not about groceries. Groceries are a convenience. But what draws people to target and what makes that preaferred provider for them is their tie ins with kind of cool brands, like theyre going to be tying in with soul cycle Just Announced today. Their previous tieins with brands, these have been exciting to consumers. Theyre also putting more of an emphasis on the plussize shopper, babies, home decor, things that are more exciting to shop for than groceries. So when you go inside target, they have to kind of make themselves look different from a walmart or another big option that you might have when it comes to those large retailers. What are the customers actually seeing inside target . Theyve also revamped the stores. If you go into a lot of department stores, they just feel depressing compared to shopping online, which is really exciting. So for example, they put in new mannequins. It sounds like a small thing but it increased sales by 30 right away. Merchandise that was displayed over the holidays on their new home decor displays sold three to four times more than previously undisplayed merchandise. So obviously the look and feel of target is really improved, and thats one of the things that Consumers Want when they go shopping. Well, kit, what can other large retailers learn from target . My goodness, you take a hit, your customers information is compromised, and here you are back in it again. So are other National Retailers taking a look to say, hmm, how can we have as much success . I think they are. Its hardest for the largest stores. You see stores, some of our biggest retailers are struggling the most because they again are having so much trouble breaking away from, well, lets do these things weve always done, but lets do them a lot better, to, lets do really different things, because frankly, theres a very different consumer mentality out there. Online shopping has changed us so much as consumers, and we really want a very, very different shopping experience. And kit, im sorry, let me jump in, in the end dont we win, too, the as the consumers . Oh, totally. Consumers are completely winning right now. They get bargains thrown at them, they get much more merchandise turnover. It used to be the retailers really ruled the game. They said, weve got four selling seasons. Right this saul youre going to get. Exactly. And now really consumers kind of dictate what they want, and retailers rush to satisfy that. Okay, that is what we want. We want to win. Consumer psychologist kit yaro, thanks for talking with us. It was such a pleasure, thanks. Mike and mark, over to you. Thank you keba. Always good to stretch the legs and walk the 20 feet across the studio and hang out with mark. In the Weather Center, right. I think when you get the paper tomorrow morning it might be wet out there. Its been a very busy week. Were tracking multiple systems in the pacific. Some stronger than others. The one moving in tonight not the strongest one, but still will be light to moderate in terms of rainfall. You will see some green here, not all this reaching the ground just yet, mainly 20,000 feet above our heads, but we still have things beginning to moisten up in the atmosphere, and cart you may encounter a few light showers, but the rainfall rates will increase later on tonight and into tomorrow morning. As far as current numbers out there, santa rosa 51 degrees, lots of 50s for san jose and livermore, walnut creek, 51, fairfield chening in at 49 degrees. First thing tomorrow morning starting out your saturday, saturday morning, mostly cloudy skies, some showers out there, temperatures will be in the you 40s and the 50s. I think the most organized rainfall is probably going to be early tomorrow morning. It might wake you up, first thing saturday. The next five days, not talking major rainfall totals, but still some rainfall focused up to our north, up towards eureka. San Francisco May pick up an inch of rain. This has been the weather story all week long. This active weather pattern. Another one setting up for monday. Heres whats happening in the short term. We had this front approaching, the rainfall developing offshore. Scattered showers tonight. Saturday, the Morning Hours, but we cannot rule tout chance for the afternoon. Tonight the rain showers developing across the bay area. Keep the umbrella handy if you are going to be out tonight. Overnight here we go with that rain spreading to the south. 7 00 a. M. Tomorrow morning, some rain showers out there. Still a chance for the afternoon but that will be somewhat of a break. Bey sunday afternoon theres a chance we could have a few sprinkles develop but thats only a slight chance. Lake tahoe today, this was the scene. Beautiful out there. Lots of sunshine. That will be changing with arrest Winter Weather advisory. They could pick up snowfall on the order of four to eight inches. Bring the chains. You might need them if you are headed to the mountains tomorrow. Tomorrow lots of 50s. No big changes in the temperature department. Heres a look ahead. Your fiveday forecast, showers into saturday, mostly for the Morning Hours. Increasing clouds on sunday with a slight chance of a sprinkle. Mike and keba, another system for mop day into possibly tuesday and then into wednesday of next week. The january we have been waiting for, so far its been quite impressive, and it will continue. We need it. Looks good, mark. Frank somerville live in the newsroom with a look at some of the stories we are working on for 5 00 and 6 00. A big day in federal court. Sure was. Raymond chow guilty on all 162 counts. It is now looking like hes going to spend the rest of his life behind bars. Didnt take the jury long to convict him. Afterwards, chows attorney had some strong words. Why he said he was outraged and disturbed by what happened during the trial. And frank, the chow case not the only court case were following today. Yeah, today the two people accused in the horrible deaths of two kids were in court. And during their hearing, something unusual happened. Well explain why the judge asked all of the reporters in the courtroom, every one of them to stand up and answer the same question. Very interesting. Well see you in just a bit. Coming up after this break, the giants had a a new name to the team roster. Now the question is which position will he play. The four on 2 will be right back. Demonstrators, and closeout inventory the year end Clearance Sale is on now at sleep train your ticket to a better nights sleep life. You never really know whats coming. Life just. Happens. Just when you think you know where its going sfx ambulance sirens it takes you someplace else. And thats why covered california is here. To help californians who need Health Insurance get it. So youll be ready next time life happens. Because its more than just health care. Its life care. We have an update on that breaking news we were telling you about, about the possible kidnapping on bart. We are told now this was a domestic dispute, not a kidnapping. It prompted the Police Activity and the stopping of trains there, at least at the montgomery street station. At this point the child is safe, the child is accounted for, and all trains are back up and running. Police are still trying to sort this all out, but again, no kidnapping, but instead it was a domestic dispute. That child is safe and sound. Time to get out the old bats and your mitts. Spring training right around the corner. I love it. Pitchers and catchers actually report in a little bit more than a month.
