The airstrikes follows russias announcement that the bomb that brought down the that a bomb brought down the Russian Airliner which killed all 224 people on board. Isis has lamed responsibility for that attack. With us now to talk about this more is doctor gloria duffy, former nuclear arms negotiator under president clinton and ceo of [ name indiscernible ] in San Francisco. Thank you for being with us. My pleasure. France, has declared as we have heard, has declared war on isis. In your opinion, do you believe there will be an increased pressure on president. Obama , even boots on the ground . I think there is already increased pressure and i am sure that the debate is going on in washington about whether to become more involved with russia and france in this coalition to attack isis. We are a long way from boots on the ground. The type of bombing that france and russia is doing is productive. The u. S. Is also bombing the wheel convoys bringing oil at of civil syria and iraq. That is the way that isis gets the funds to commit these terrorist attacks. We are trying to interfere in the transport of the oil that is bringing them financing. What is happening now . How does that impact our relationship with russia . Is a going to depend on how much we do against this fight against isis in this fight. I am sure we are pretty working behind the scenes with russias russia already. Theres probably intelligence information being exchanged on possible bombing targets and isis. I think we could move a lot closer to russia and collaborate with russia on this effort. That might be protective for the relation between u. S. And russia over a. I5 we have strong in common interests in stopping isis. Doctor duffy, we have this russian plane going down and the attacks in france a couple of days ago. What does this say about presentday terrorism, the enemy in 2015 . It shows that they are broad and coordinated as a terrorist threats, perhaps store with an al qaeda around the time of 9 11. We have had attacks or even threatened attacks in the u. S. , airliners, soccer stadiums, on an airliner Russian Airliner. It is a broad coordinated very dangerous terrorist threat. Just what you said, i have read something similar. Somebody that isis has surpassed al qaeda as being the most feared terrorist group in the world. What will it take, in your opinion, to defeat isis . It will take a coalition of those countries that are affected and that now includes the u. S. , russia, france and germany at least. It will take concerted military efforts. I am not willing to say that it will take boots on the ground go think about this. There is a lot that we can do, not only through bombing but through technology to interfere with isis. Isis has a great use of social media to recruit volunteers and express its position. I believe that there is a group called anonymous that has started interfering in shutting down isis site, twitter accounts and someone. There is a lot more that the u. S. And our other countries that are being affected can do with technology to help shut isis down. Boots on the ground, i dont know but there is a lot we can do. The driver is charged with two counts of child endangerment. This case it deals with allocations allegations of drunk driving. The alarm had already been sounded about the dangers setting affecting students in the marina district. We are looking at the risk in the neighborhood. With us now is the head of the Safety Program at old school ult school. Many of them walk through the busy intersections. What makes this area so dangerous . Our school is located three blocks away from that intersection and as a part of our regular normal day we are out and about, Walking Around the neighborhood. Our children cross that intersection very frequently and are in that neighborhood frequently. It is a tough intersection. There are multiple lanes of traffic coming in both directions. It is a three block area between the parks and schools that has no traffic signal whatsoever. There are several unprotected intersections across that area. In regards to this case from earlier this month, it is in the courts. We dont know whether she was legally drunk or not. She has pled not guilty. My question to you is, throw that all aside. Lets they she was not drunk. With this accident still have happened would this accident still have happened because of a roadway incident . Is a difficult intersection. We have brought up this issue to the city prior to this incident ever happening. There needs to be a signal or protected crosswalk, potentially lights lining the crosswalk to make it safer for children. If you raise a red flag, we know this intersection is unsafe, what can we do . Two boys have been hit at this intersection. Whats the next step . One of the things were trying to do is as i have mentioned, we reached out to the city. Several of our parents have done the same. The middle school was doing the same as well. Our goal is to partner with the city and as if mta sfmta and be advocates for our children in the area. We want to work with the city and make sure his crop crosswalk is affected as well as other dangerous cross works. Ive heard the plan to reduce the lanes from 4 to 2. Stop sign, does all of this matter, is there one particular fix . In this particular case i think having more than a stop sign, having an actual light that stops traffic or a light to crosswalk for children to cross would be the answer. What about the argument, lets get it right so we wont work fast right after an accident you hear that a lot from city hall in regards to the pace of these projects. I know this project has been in the queue for a while. They have a project plan in place. There are certain things that we can do in the near term. They have put in a stop sign which is fantastic. We could put in temporary speed bumps to slow traffic down or possibly even reduce the speed limit in that area. What do you tell parents out there that are wondering . They have made their voices heard. We work with our parents closely. We want to be partners. We have put together several tips for parents as well as for students across the street every day. You want to do not just planet but practice it throughout the year. Absolutely, we want parents to talk with students about how they are going to get to school and walked the route with their students and go with thing and occasionally go with them occasionally to make sure it is safe. They know the route that there children are taking. Should they call when they get to school . Some of our students are doing that. A lot of upper elementary and middle school tunes already have cell phones. Not all not all of our students do. We recommend that students check in with their parents when they get to school. We have this process in place so that students can let parents know when they are there. Not just for students, for parents as well, put down your phones, they guys contact, put down your make eye contact, put down your phone. Be aware of what is going on. I appreciate your time. Food companies are boosting the amount of money you spend on advertising for junk food such as chips and soda. That is what researchers at the red center for food policy and obesity at university of connecticut found. They looked at advertising between 2010 and 2014 and found out that not only is advertising increasing but worth it is targeting latino and black youth. The center found that marketing us next to black and latino youth increased 551 but yogurt ads dropped 93 . Black youth saw 54 more soft drink ads. We see a double dose of Food Marketing in the media and marketing messages in their communities. These are just some of the takeaways. Joining us now via skype is the author of that study, jennifer harrys from the rudd center at the university of connecticut. Manufacturers are targeting latino and black children so they can pester their parents for these projects products or are they marketing to the parents to get them to think these products are healthy . Most of the marketing that is targeted to black and latino people is marketed towards teenagers. They definitely have their own money and are buying their own snack food in school and in stores, vending machines etc. Its not marketed to parents. Were you surprised by what you found . We were surprised we werent surprised that there was a lot of unhealthy marketing targeted to black and latino youth but we were surprised that it has increased so much in the past two years. Not only the unhealthy stuff going up at the Healthy Products are advertised less. It is getting the situation is getting worse. In your research are you finding false advertising going on at all . Fruit snacks and juices, cereals, are they meeting federal standards for healthy snacks . I wouldnt call it misleading but companies have nutrition standards that they have developed. They say these are Healthy Products. Things such as fruit snacks, fruit roll ups, the Companies Say they are healthy according to their nutrition standards. But according to the Public Health community and the nutritionist that we work with, they are not healthy snacks. In your opinion, the advertising going on is not illegal. No, there is nothing illegal about it. It is just they are saying on the one hand that they are only marketing healthy choices to kids and on the other hand they are marketing products that most people dont think are healthy choices for kids. Jennifer, we reached out to some of the big boys in this business, General Mills, kelloggs and pepsi. Kelloggs got back to us just an hour ago. I will read their statements and part. The study is misleading and its characterization of ad spending in nutrition criteria comparisons. Kellogg has a long history of responsible marketing. They go on to say, we only advertise food that meets stringent nutrition criteria. Im sure you have seen similar statements. What do you think . The biggest snack foods that kelloggs markets to kids are pop tarts. Their nutrition pop tarts do not meet their nutrition standards of what should be marketed to kids part of the reason that kids are seeing these at is because they are appearing during programming that lots of kids are watching that doesnt technically meet kelloggs criteria for marketing to children. It gets technical but they are advertising on programs such as nick at night and abc family, disney movies and things like that. According to them, these are not child directed programs. Based on kelloggs response, it doesnt seem you are making friends out there with them or General Mills or pepsi. What you want to happen . The point of this research is to raise awareness of what is going on. The companies are spending a lot of money saying things like this. Kelloggs says, we market responsively to kids. We want to publish the data to show exactly what they mean by responsible marketing amount which is not very responsible, in our opinion. Jennifer harris at the rudd center at the university of connecticut. Thank you for having me. I was just talking to mark tamayo. Its so nice, a nice all day. Is perfect weather.
