The devastating mckinney fire in Northern California leaves a small town in ashes why forecasters say firefighters could be in for several difficult days on the front lines in kansas voters mark their ballots to protect abortion rights up next were talking live with the Political Science professor about the impact of this vote. And whether never another summer like day out there with some fog, coast size and hot temperatures inland and still some humid conditions. The pattern will change the by the weekend. Well have the executive to protect Abortion Access here in the us, and this comes one day after kansas voters rejected an amendment to that states constitution that would have allowed lawmakers to ban abortions. Foxes Lauren Blanchard has the details now from washington. Through an executive order. President biden wants to make it easier for women to get an abortion or other Reproductive Services if they need to cross state lines were doing everything in our power to safeguard access to healthcare, including the right to choose virtually because of his rebound case of covid, the president kicked off the first meeting of his task force on Reproductive Healthcare access. It was formed after the Supreme Court overturned roe versus wade in june. We trust the judgment. Of the women of america. To make decisions. Based on what they know is in their best interest. The meeting comes just a day after kansas voters rejected a measure to remove abortion protections from their states constitution. Will be protected in the state of kansas, idaho, the Justice Department may face an uphill legal battle over that states nearly total abortion ban is set to go into effect later this month. The is suing to protect emergency medical procedures for women, which may require an abortion. Democrats believe reproductive rights will be a major ballot issue in november. The American People are fed up with politicians trying to tell them what to do with their lives and their bodies. This week, a Small Bipartisan Group of senators introduced legislation to make the freedom of reproductive rights federal law. Some democrats dont believe it goes far enough, and its unlikely to pass in washington. Lauren blanchard, fox news all right for more on the abortion vote in kansas last night and what it might signal moving forward. We are joined now. By donna crane, political lecturer at San Jose State University and at ben low college as well. Always good to have you on, professor. We appreciate the time clearly last night, a resounding victory for abortion rights supporters in kansas red state in the middle of this country. What do you think this vote signals about . How the Supreme Court overturning roe v. Wade is likely to factor into the midterm elections all across the country. Is this a bellwether . I think it signals a couple of really important points that political strategists, especially on the republican side, should be taking a close. Look at first of all, we need to know that more people turned out to vote in kansas yesterday on the abortion referendum, then voted in both primaries for governor. What i mean by that is people actually went to the polls just voted on this question. Didnt even bother voting on anything else and then left. So this is clearly a motive. Later, far beyond any other election question that kansans faced we should also have a look at the fact that when you look at up all the votes in favor of the measure, excuse me in favor of abortion rights against the measure. Its far more than there were democrats who voted so clearly this initiative is pulling over republicans and independents and moving forward to that point. Do you think the abortion issue is one that will Transcend Party as we move toward november . I do. I dont think it will Transcend Party as much as it did last night, because when people vote for congress or governor, theyre taking a lot of other considerations into account as opposed to just yesterday when they were voting on one policy issue, but i do think it shows that this issue has a lot more potency than most people thought, and that the decision the Supreme Court made to reverse roe has the potential to have really little fire under a pro choice voters absolutely, clearly motivating a lot of voters, mainly democrats, but republic kans as well. I mean, this measure was was put on the ballot here because opponents of abortion rights figured this would be a low voter turnout election here in august, and that would be to their advantage. But obviously we saw the numbers that turned out here. How do you think the abortion issue and the overturning of roe v. Wade will motivate specifically that that Democratic Base and get them to the polls this november . I think its going to motivate the more democrats to come out to vote then normally would have. I still would like to see a little bit more data. But the early indications last night were that in the voters that registered in kansas after the Supreme Court announced its decision to reverse roe democrats had a big advantage. We also have to make one last observation here. What kansans voted on was not an abortion ban, so it wasnt even the most extreme measure that pro lifers can put forward. It was a measure that would have stripped pro choice language out of the constitution and affect sort of making it neutral and the fact that it lost 40 to 60, i think really says something powerful about what voters think about the Supreme Courts decision. You talked a moment ago about about the issues that are likely to drive voters to the polls. We obviously still have to look at the economy record high inflation as being being one of the main drivers and one of the main motivators for voters come this november, but but do you think now that the abortion rights issue is moving up the list of Priority Issues for more voters in this country . I absolutely do and how fast things change. My understanding is that covid has dropped so low that its no longer even know agreement appearing on poll results, so abortion has moved up very high economy almost always remains high. And then theres one other factor we havent mentioned in in america. Our elections are very personality driven so especially in congressional districts, people people are going to vote by party and by the person and then they consider issues but when we look at stake wide races like governor or senator. Those are always almost always much more moderate races and you cant just appeal to the fringe of your party. Especially if youre on the gop side. You gotta you gotta appeal statewide and kansas showed us last night, which position for males. Alright you know, finally here not to try to make too much of what we saw play out last night , but but is it your sense that this might signal that the red wave thats been predicted during the upcoming midterms might not be quite as massive as some of us had thought. I think its too early predict the demise of the red wave, but i do think that the waters are now shall we say more turbulent. I think that with the easing of gas prices, perhaps, and with a couple of good weeks that joe biden has had, plus this these kansas results, i think we can say that its not a slam dunk that the republicans will take both the house and the senate in november. Yeah but obviously still a long way to go until we get to those midterms. We always appreciate your time. Dana crane from san jose state and menlo college. Thanks for coming on today. Thanks for having me in georgia, any unborn child with a detectable heartbeat can now be claimed as a dependent that new guidance was released just this week by the state department of revenue , and it allows any taxpayer who can prove they had an unborn child with a detectable heartbeat. And while we wait for that report, new data shows the number of people employed and hours worked fell in the month of july. The data was released by a Company Called home base, described as a platform for managing local businesses. For more on this, were joined by home based ceo john waldman. John thanks so much for joining us this afternoon. First off just kind of give us a sample size for this data. How accurate do you think it reflects whats happening across the country . Yeah. Thank you. For having me the data is quite accurate. We serve over 100,000 businesses across the united states, including over 2000 great local businesses here in the bay area when we hear the report that people are working less in the month of july, i think how does that even happen . Inflation is so high. Its really hard to make ends meet. How is this happening . Yeah well, in addition to the data that we have, we also did a survey of over 500 local businesses and over 700 workers and not surprisingly, 80 of both businesses and workers were worried about a recession, so their fear is creeping in here now theyre responding in different ways. Both businesses and workers are actually increasing their savings. So youre seeing that from a business standpoint and from a worker standpoint. The businesses, however, have been through a really hard last couple of years with the big labor shortage, so they want to retain the team members that they have. The way that they are coming back is by reducing hours and in terms of these Rising Interest Rates we know inflation is at all time high, trying to kind of control that how do we think that its going to have an impact on the Small Businesses that are trying to stay afloat . Yeah well, it has been a couple of really hard years for Small Businesses, uh, through covid through the labor shortage and now into inflation, despite all of that, you know, one of the things thats amazing about local business is they are optimistic and they find a way and they remain optimistic today , even with inflation, you know, one of the things that we did see in our survey is that 89 of the Small Businesses were still planning on hiring. So even though they are absolutely worried about a recession, they are still thinking about how can i grow my business . How can i improve my team . How can i improve the performance of my team to my customers . Thats still very much top of mind for these businesses. I think another interesting thing that we saw come out of the data is that people have said even though they are concerned about, uh, the inflation and the possibility of a recession. And they didnt plan to change their spending habits in anyway. Why do you think that is yeah, well , i think we looked at that as a great sign for local businesses. You know, folks have been really pent up for the last couple of years and to see workers that we surveyed said that hey, i might be cutting back in other places, but i still want to go out and have go out to restaurants and travel is a great sign for local businesses and the resilience that local businesses may have through any incoming recession that may happen and in terms of layoffs, i know that thats something that a lot of businesses are grappling with right now. Especially here in the bay area. Weve seen the tech sector just have a bunch of layoffs. Do you think that we will continue to see more layoffs here in the bay area out of the recession fears . Yeah you know, he was certainly seen a lot of layoffs at large companies. I think what we are seeing in Small Companies is that they are still hiring well , they may be hiring at a reduced rate. Theyre still optimistic and want to be hiring through the remainder of 2022. And Small Businesses, as we know are great places to work. You know, the other thing that we know is despite the Great Resignation and everything that weve been talking about on the Labor Market Turnover for the last couple of years. 50 of hourly workers actually want to stay in the job that theyre at over the next 1 to 2 years. Thats actually quite high. 80 believe that their current job is a great place to work. Thats amazing. Lastly here before we let you go any advice you have for Small Business owners, or maybe just even employees. As they kind of go through this their new reality here. Yeah i think in all of this, its good to prepare, and one of the things that local businesses have been doing is adapting their businesses over the last couple of years to a new reality of labor shortages, reduced team sizes, even in a recession, those kinds of pressures probably arent going away. So it remains a great time for local businesses to be investing in technology that can help them manage the business more effectively and still attract and retain workers. In this environment. Its a great time not just to grow your team if you can do that as a business, but frankly also to go find the team members who might be great for you through this next stage of your business. John waldman, ceo of home based actually based in San Francisco, thanks so much for joining us this afternoon. Thanks for having me. Were joined now by usda Nutrition Service administrator cindy long. Cindy thank you for taking the time. We appreciate it. So you and your colleagues you stopped by one of the summer meal sites in the west Contra Costa Unified School district today. What was the goal of todays visit . Well, thanks, alex. Its a pleasure to be here. You know, the goal of todays visit was really to lift up the importance of the program you described, which is the Summer Meals Program and the wonderful wonderful people that operated to ensure that kids have meals during the summertime when school is out. Obviously the program is aimed at children and teenagers who live in low income communities here in the bay area and across the country. How how do you determine where these summer Meal Distribution sites are going to be set up . Well its largely based on data from the schools, you know the number of free and reduced price kids in the schools in that area or sometimes theres an option to use census data, but its a its a data based assessment of the need of the community. Obviously weve talked about the fact that times are tough for people here in the bay area and across the country, we have record high prices on especially on food. And so families are struggling. What . What how has that played out is that meant more kids and their families turning to these summer meal programs. Well i think youre certainly right that these these programs really are a tool for families to cope with the challenges that they may be facing. As you described, uh, you know, we were the side that we visited today served something on the order of over 250 children from the community , so its certainly serving an important need, and were just really happy that they can be there to meet that need i was going to say i mean, have have the has the program been able to keep up with the demand. Well the great thing about these programs as they are designed so that, uh, the communities have the flexibility to serve the families and the children who who show up and, uh are are in need of meals, so theyre not. Theyre not capped at certain numbers or have other limitations like that, so they can really meet the needs of the community. Do you think enough children and their families know that these summer meal programs exist . I always sort of wonder that ive seen in some of them set up in my neighborhood and that you know some of the school sites nearby, and you know, they had a lot of meals to give out and they really were trying to get the word out. And i just want to lift up the beautiful meals we saw today they have the children had a you know a burrito and rice and some slaw and a beautiful assortment of fresh fruit. They were actually having a fresh fruit tasting today and had a local farmer on site. So yeah, absolutely.
