Oaklands mayor is pushing to add more Police Officers to the street in the wake of violent may day protests. Tara moriarty is joining us live from auto row where there is thousands of dollars in damage. Were at the hyundai dealership. All of these windshields have be smashed in. And this car was set on fire. We know that the owner says 70 80 cars were targeted at store front windows. Eric rut says he put his own sign saying opd you failed us again. This is a sentiment echoed by many businesses. The city would not tolerate violence but that night groups from the demonstrators against Police Brutality caused the worst destruction. You go up and down and you see that much damage. If it doesnt get better, many will come through. Mayor schaaf admitted that while police protected lives, the strategy for handling protestors was ineffective. We did not do a good enough job of protecting property. And understandably Business Owners are tired. So tonight schaaf will go before the council and ask for 40 more officers. That would bring the total number of offices to 762 over the next two years. People in east Contra Costa County are learning the reality on how they will be effected by budget cuts to their Fire District after failing to pass a parcel tax to pay for fire services. Over fill crowd of a few hundred people packed a meeting last night. The east contra costa Fire District laid out its plans. They will soon only have three. The Fire District voted to close the downtown brentwood and fire houses effective monday. The president of the Firefighters Union says Service Calls that do not require lights and sirens will also likely be cut. The biggest fear people will die. Somebody will have an emergency and there will be nobody to help them. And im just talking about every day emergencies. Stations in oakley, brentwood, and Discovery Bay will be staffed with three firefighters each. The president of the Firefighters Union says that leaves nine firefighters serving an area that covers 100,000 people every day. Although east contra costa Property Owners have avoided paying the parcel tax, we are learning they could be hit with increased Fire Insurance rates. It could be to the point where we the company itself cant insure you and it has to go to a fair plan. A company that tells insurers how to rate risk has told the east contra costa Fire District that homes will be rerated and charged for the greater risk. Properties on Bethel Island are likely to be hardest hit because they are the furthest from an open fire house. Contra costa is investigating the cause of a grass fire. That started just after 7 30 last night. The fire burned about two acres of grass and brush. Firefighters were able to keep it frommen spreading to nearby homes and no one was hurt. Today in sacramento the state Water Resources control board will consider a proposal to require 25 cut in water use in the citys statewide. Today the highway california Highway Patrol will hold a memorial in sacramento to hop nor its officers killed in the line of duty. This year they will pay special tribute to officers Juan Gonzalez and brian law they died in a crash while responding to a traffic collision on highway 99 in Fresno County last year. The ceremony will also include a 21 gun salute and the reading of the names of all of the 225 chp officers that lost their lives in the departments 86 year history. A solemn remembrance was held in sacramento to remember all officers that died in the line of duty last year. One of those honored was a bart Police Officer killed while conducting a search at a dublin apartment last year. Detective Sergeant Thomas a. Junior. January 21st 2014. This group here for these few hours embodies the very best of california. Solidarity, camaraderie, memory, and dedication. 17 other offices were also honored. The two ceremonies come just before the start of National Police week on monday. A chp Helicopter Team rescued a woman that is stranded on the rocks on the marin county coast. The chopper lowered a rescuer to the woman at Tennessee Cove and brought her on board yesterday afternoon. This is video here. She had been swept out to sea by large waves but was able to get back on to a cliff. The woman was tired and cold but otherwise uninjured. Investigators in philadelphia, pennsylvania are trying to figure out how a toddler ended up on the roof of a three story house. The neighbor jacob durant spotted the twoyearold and called police. He begged the little boy to stay still. Police and firefighters quickly arrived to the scene a short time later. Firefighters put up a ladder. Police officer ran inside. Durant continued to talk to the toddler. I was just hoping for his safety. Baby reached out for the ladder. Once again yelling dont move. Stay right there. Sol policemen pulled him out. Two women were taken from the scene in handcuffs. A coalition of Health Groups have filed initiatives to ask voters to raise californias tobacco tax. The California State Assembly approved a new law that would bar Public Schools from using the word redskins for sports teams and mascots.
