Todays sentencing in the Boston Marathon bombing case comes as tens of thousands of runners are preparing for the bay to breakers race here in San Francisco. Police and Race Organizers say they remain especially mindful of race security two years after the Boston Marathon bombing. Its a race that draws serious runners from around the world, along with a lot of whacky costumes. Its the best race in the world. Its so fun. Such a fun day. The 12k foot race stretches from the citys financial district near the San Francisco bay out to ocean beach. 50,000 registered runners are expected this year, ranging from pros to amateurs. One year there was a group that was all the characters of alice and wonderland. They looked really professional. Thats where a grass fire has moved dangerously close to the home. It started shortly before 4 00 this afternoon on valley road, just across the street from hercules high school. Now to a frightening situation on a vta bus today in the south bay. A passenger tried to attack the driver. I heard some yelling. I looked over and i see this guy with a pen trying to stab the bus driver. Reporter art and two of his employees at the nearby restaurant stepped in. I started yelling at him, get off the bus get off the bus leave the guy alone reporter the man you see with one leg, swinging his crutch at the mentally ill man. He grabbed like a squeegee, trying to hit me with it. I said i grabbed it and whacked him with it. Reporter his worker got on the bus and pushed the man off. Those are the heroes. Im glad they were there. Reporter the man identified as 34yearold daniel pacheko of gilroy, ran away before being arrested. Because of what he was saying about people killing him, about his actions ahead of time, waving things in midair, we believe that he was going through some type of Mental Health episode. Reporter no one was hurt. Not only did this veteran driver return to work the next day, he continued with his route immediately after this incident happened. Its over with. A young vallejo man has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of a Vallejo High School student. 19yearold Zachary Crowell is in the Solano County jail tonight. He was arrested early this morning, after 17yearold max rusk was shot and killed yesterday on a path near Jesse Bethel High School in vallejo. Outside the school, a memorial for rusk continues to grow. Today, his mother told us she tried several times to take her son out of the school because he didnt feel safe there. And i just wanted my son to get out of that school and i wanted home schooling for him and they wouldnt do it. I know life goes on. He doesnt want me to cry, but its kind of hard when you miss Something Like that. Its such a privilege to be his father. The superintendent declined to speak about the comments made by rusks mother, but did say nine security guards work on campus to help keep students safe. The Oakland PoliceDepartment Just wrapped up its Fourth Annual open house. Community members were invited to meet with officers in front of Police Headquarters in downtown oakland, kind of like a block party with food and festivities. The chief says events like these help bridge the gap and achieve the goal of community policing. We have our top jobs, working on the relationship with the community, bonding with the community, having a good relationship. So this is a great opportunity to do that. The chief also says that events like this help with the departments goal of local recruiting. Bay area transit officials are considering an unusual approach to try to ease the gridlock in San Francisco during the morning commute. They may allow buses to travel the wrong way on the bay bridge. The idea is to turn the far left eastbound lane heading toward oakland into a buses only westbound lane that would head into San Francisco. The plan would require a movable barrier to prevent head on collisions and a special off ramp leading to the transbay terminal. The total cost could top 170 million.
