That money could be generated by selling off most of the hospitals off campus real estate. They are hopeing to raise 1. 7 million. Allowing it to make payroll for a few more weeks and hopefully, buy enough time for a possible last minute rescue. It is an unusual crime for one bay area city. Police in albany are investigate ago death of a woman in her apartment as a homicide. It is the first killing in albany in more than ten years, allie rasmus has more on what she has learned on the victim and the investigation. Reporter well, the victim was a 37yearold woman who lived in this Apartment Building in albany near san pablo. I had a chance to speak with sop of her friends and relatives this afternoon. They didnt want to talk on camera but they told me a little more about her. Her family told me 37yearold randere paul was almost done with finishing with school at sfcf. A Family Member found her in her apartment shot. Paramedics pronounced her deceased. Pauls relatives are stunned and devastated by the loss. They say paul was born in india where her parents still lived. She was a practicing dentist here. She moved to be bay area in 2001 and started to get her dental degree in the u. S. The family didnt want to do anything to jeopardize the investigation. Albany police are not saying much about this. Only that they are investigating this as a homicide. Oakland police say finding the person who killed a mother as she tried to protect her children is one of their top priorities. She was 30yearold camille pierce. Just before 5 00 yesterday evening, a fight broke out among a group of women. Shots were fired and a stray bullet shot and killed camille pierce down the street. She was not involved in the fight. She was just trying to get two of her children out of the line of fire. Children immediately started running. She was running with them. Unfortunately, due to the senseless violence that was taking place up the street, she was fatally struck just feet from her front door. Two unidentified teens were also heard and taken to high land hospital. They are expected to survive. A 20,000 reward is offered in the killing of camille pierce. Some San Francisco supervisors are trying a new tactic to get people to cut down on how much soda they drink. Three supervisors introduced legislation to add warning labels on advertisements for soda that are just about everywhere. This comes after voters rejected a tax on sodas and sugary drinks last november. Scott wiener says it is a matter of health. I think this Campaign Goes deeper to demonize for the sake of ultimately collecting tax. A second measure would ban all sugary drink ads on public property and bar the city on spending tax dollars on sugary drinks. These measures are up for the voters not the supervisors to decide. Two nonprofit gay and lesbian groups have filed a Class Action Lawsuit against the Social Security administration for alleged bias against same sex married couples. Benefits for unmarried individuals are higher than for married individuals. The Social Security administration continued to issue benefit to certain individuals in same sex marriages as if they were single which resulted in overpayments. The suit was filed on behalf of two same sex couples who were told to reimburse the agency for overpayments. The plaintiffs argue the couples should not have to pay for the Social Securitys clerical errors. Two call earthquakes rattled the bay area this morning. The first happened just after 9 30. East bay muds reservoirs are only 55 of capacity. The watershed has an average of one foot of snow on the ground compared to the usual six feet. Today, statewide snow pack which was 33 of normal this time last year is now just 19 . Just 1 higher than the 1991 modern low of 18 . We would need another 11 inches of rain just to get halfway between the driest and wettest years and the next two weeks are forecast as dry. It could be among one of our worst years. The High Speed Rail Authority says the long term goal is to have no vehicle crossings where the bullet train runs. A Program Manager discussed eliminating the potential safety threat at todays board meeting. He says the short term plan calls for moving about a dozen of 44 crossings on the peninsula. 55 crossings in the central sal valley will also be eliminated. Other crossings will be phased out over time. There will be no crossings, zero. That is our long term goal. But we are building this project in stages. The authority says it will take step to address safety at crossings where it shares tracks in the early stages of the project. But at the costco in danville, there is an employee who makes everyone there feel important. And ktvu fox 2 news john sasaki tells us that employee is facing some serious challenges. All of which prompted some of his customers to give him a big surprise. Reporter as shoppers ebb and flow at the danville costco, one of the first and last people they say is 45year old arlie smith. He is always at the door, always giving receipts, and smiling and happy. Reporter he has worked at the store 21 years, but not without challenges. He was diagnosed with primary progressive ms. Reporter multiple sclerosis. Then last september, his body threw him a bigger curve ball. He has terminal bone cancer. Now with maybe two years to live. Since the time he was told that, he has been enthusiastic and happy. And im not kidding. Reporter he is such a beloved figure some customers heard about the cancer and decided to do something nice for him. What are we doing . Reporter at 1 00 p. M. , they invaded the store. We are all here today because we love you so much. Reporter they raised about 2,500 to send arli and his wife on a vacation. We all banded together and got people donating 10, 20. Up to 500 for you and sherry to go and have a fun time at your favorite place in laguna beach. Reporter he was overwhelmed. They are priceless. They are irreplaceable. Reporter and his humility is obvious. The love that is shown to me everyday is astounding. People dont have this great of a life, really. Reporter despite living with multiple sclerosis and term mall cancer, arli couldnt be more positive about life. It is in your face all the time. How could you possibly be ungrateful in my situation . I dont think i ever saw him grapple with the why me. I think he went immediately to, you know, finding a bigger purpose for what he can do. Reporter his purpose, now, is to raise as much money as possible during a store wide fundraiser in may for childrens hospital. A fundraiser in which he is previously finished in the top ten in north america. A greek philosopher once said it is not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters. The darkening clouds. Maybe a little bit of virga, the rain that falls and evaporates before it hits the ground. Clearing in the later afternoon we are talking mid 60s in downtown San Francisco. If we get a tenth of an inch of rain, we will be doing good. It doesnt appear that many of us will see that much. Most of us see fivehundredths or less. Doesnt move the needle in terms of drought.
