Reporter within the hour, a mile away in the upper diamond, two masked men with guns walked into the open door of a home on harding way. On the glenview neighborhood facebook page, the victim wrote, they told me to get down on the floor and zip tied my hands behind my back. Private security was on duty, but the patrolman was on another street. I think if they were doing their job, you cant be everywhere at every moment. Reporter tracy mckendall helped organize private security in the neighborhood. Homeowners each pay 400 to 500 a year for the services of Security Code 3, a guard with the same company shot a burglar in the leg in the same neighborhood in february. Many neighbors here say crime is down. The biggest goal for private security is as a deterrent. And the more publicity we get for it, obviously hopefully the more of a deterrent it is. I think eyes and ears out front makes you a better neighbor and keeps down crime. Reporter for now, Dan Leibovitz is not buying into private patrols. He says his own presence on his street offers the same deterrent to criminals looking for an easy target. Nobody would a pick axe. Nobody with a pick axe, no. I fix them with this. Reporter despite these recent crimes, at least one neighbor who has declined to pay for private patrols in her neighborhood in the past today told me she is now ready to sign on. It happened just after 9 00 this morning on mission and 15th streets. Officers arrived to find a man suffering from several gunshot wounds. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. So far, the name of the victim has not been released. No arrests have been made. A new grand jury indictment has now been filed against the San Francisco man accused of having explosives in his apartment. The indictment includes felony charges that Ryan Chamberlain possessed an unregistered weapon, as well as another destructive device. Chamberlains defense attorney has said chamberlain Needs Mental Health treatment. He is set to be back in court on monday. Former bart Police Officer mehserle cried on the witness stand today, as he testified in a wrongful death lawsuit over the shooting death of oscar grant. These are sketches from his testimony earlier this week. Today, mehserle testified, as he did at his own trial, that he meant to use his taser, not his gun on new years day 2009. He broke down, as he described realizing he had shot grant. Oscar grants father is seeking unspecified damages in his lawsuit against mehserle and bart. Four years ago, a jury convicted mehserle of involuntary manslaughter. Mehserle has served one year in prison. Mountain view police say a multiagency bust turned up cash, guns, and a massive illegal marijuana growing operation. And they are crediting an anonymous tip with helping bring it all down. It came in as an anonymous tip to Mountain View police. This building, which seemed to house an arcade repair shop, was hiding Something Else entirely. We smelled it, but we werent sure. But then when they started pulling plants out, that was pretty crazy. Reporter officers broke down the doors here thursday afternoon, uncovering what they describe as a sophisticated illegal growing marijuana grow operation. They seized more than 800 plants. The estimated street value of just the pot plants that were here in Mountain View was over half a million dollars. Reporter but that wasnt all. Two additional raids in san jose netted illegal guns, 10,000 in cash, and more drugs. There was also narcotics, methamphetamine and other drugs, as well as thc, or honey lab in another one, which is very dangerous. Reporter 33yearold samir med vehicle, hernandez, and abbey rose were all taken into custody. Those that work next to the Mountain View warehouse watched as the raid went down. Knocked on our door and everything around here, they wouldnt let nobody come in or out. Definitely surprising because this is all high tech, pretty nice area. Two sisters in San Francisco are accused of forcing seven young women into prostitution in the citys richmond district. 37yearold chow hay, also known as judy, and her 36year old sister, gay ningo, were arrested after a multimonth investigation. Authorities dont know how the young women ended up at the brothels or where they are now. The sisters are each charged with pimping and pandering. San francisco District AttorneyGeorge Gascon joined the Council General of brazil today, in signing a memo of understanding, aimed at ensuring the safety of Domestic Violence victims and survivors of human trafficking. Gascon said San Francisco is a cosmopolitan city and having close ties between Law Enforcement and foreign governments is important. We provide ontheground training to staff, how to recognize potential victims of trafficking, human smuggling, what are the signs of Domestic Violence. Gascon also said its important to have staff trained because often foreign nationals approach their consulates with problems rather than police. A man who thought he was going to meet a woman he had met online ended up getting punched and robbed instead. He says he was blindsided by a punch and then the men took his wallet and cell phone and ran away. A fire burned dangerously close to homes in the north bay today. Crews in marin county scrambled to put it out before it damaged any homes. Ktvus Christina Rendon joins us live from san rafael, where two neighborhoods were evacuated. Reporter well, there are about 100 homes from those two neighborhoods that were evacuated. People have since returned home. You can see behind me, crews from calfire are packing up to go home, too. But at one point, this fire was very intense. Fastmoving flames fueled by dry grass, burned on a hillside in san rafael. Were coming, were coming reporter its a sight dozens of evacuees living atop the hill fear. There is a lot of dry grass, so were always thinking about that. Then i came running down here and you could see the fire was only about a hundred yards away. Reporter but flames were dangerously closer to those at the bottom of the hill in the con temp poe marin neighborhood, where tracy newman lives. Been here over a decade. Ive never been so scared in my life. Reporter she says flames burned to the back of her mobile home and a few of her neighbors lost decks in the backyard. San rafael fire chief Christopher Gray says the 12 acre fire could have been catastrophic, but thankfully crews were helped by homeowners that had cut the grass down. Were asking that people work with us and help protect their homes and their neighbors homes by cutting back that brush, because the fire will come. Reporter one man was arrested for throwing an object at a firefighter, because police say he was upset with their response time. But newman says these firefighters are heroes for saving their homes. They saved a lot of our houses. Im really happy. Were really proud of them. Reporter police say that man was cited for assaulting a firefighter. First responders reacted to a mock emergency today on the San Francisco bay in which a plane bound for the Oakland Airport went down in the water. Operation splashdown was done to help prepare crews in the event of the real thing. From news chopper 2, you could see the First Responders training just off the san leandro marina. More than 100 people from 25 different agencies, including the coastguard and the Alameda CountyFire Department took part in todays drill. We know that incidents like this can happen and it really tests this sort of a response to this kind of incident, but it represents any large scale event that would happen in the bay area. The results of todays exercise will be evaluated and crews will get another chance to practice at a full simulation drill in september. A group working to raise the minimum wage in oakland took its campaign to city hall today. The lift up Oakland Coalition presented new research by uc berkeley. The Research Shows if oaklands minimum wage was raised from 8 an hour to 12. 25 an hour, more than a quarter of oaklands workers would receive a pay raise. Researchers say that would improve the Overall Health and happiness of those workers. Working fulltime, you should not have to be on public assistance making impossible choices between food, rent, gas, electricity. The best medicine for this problem is tackling the underlying root cause, which is income. The Research Goes on to note that a minimum wage increase would not negatively impact employment or the economy. The issue is expected to appear on the november ballot. A backtoschool program that helps kids in need has an urgent need of its own. The family giving tree has been getting kids ready to go back to school since 1996. The Program Makes sure children from low income families start the school year off right, with a new backpack and all the supplies they need to have a successful year. But now the program is in urgent need of a warehouse. We have to borrow on new building every year. Normally they are sold or being rented to somebody else.
