grind mark you could say. in the path of the semi. >> reporter: the semi couldn't stop on time. two passengers died on impact. the driver of the semi wasn't injured and helped paramedics pull the injured teens from the wreckage. >> he stepped in to help out, how could you not. really a very devastating situation to be in in the first place. >> reporter: the accident happened around noon during the school's lunch hour. nevado's high school principal says students are allowed to leave campus for lunch. now investigators found several open beer cans inside the smashed bmw. once again the 17-year-old driver of that bmw has been arrested for dui. he's also been cited for driving without a license. the driver had an alcohol level of 3.8. i also spoke off camera with nevado's principal, they will not be giving any statements today, but on monday they plan to be talking more about this accident. reporting live from nevado, allie rasmus. we have a developing story where a airplane made an emergency landing. news opper 2 was on the scene when the plane touched down. officials at sfo say no one was injured and that the plane was able to taxi safely to the terminal. we'll have more on this story coming up on the 10:00 news. more than a thousand mourners filled st. cecilia catholic church today to say goodbye to two victims of the san bruno explosion. they honored the lives of jaquelyn gray and janessa. those who knew her say her live was defined by her family. >> she was a wonderful mom. >> reporter: the family was in their san bruno home just a few thousand yards away from the explosion. st.cecilia church played a central role in both of their lives. janessa was a student there and student body class president. >> she was super nice. she never had a bad thing to say about anyone. >> a memorial fund has been set up for the family at the bank of the west in san francisco. pg & e has a list of its top 100 riskiest pipelines but the company is refusing to disclose the locations of those pipes. but ktvu news has found one of those high risk pipelines and what you're about to see could anger you. consumer editor tom vacar joins us now. he's in san bruno with the details, tom. >> reporter: we see the latest right here right now. the 30-inch pipeline wrecked havoc here. but in fact, this same pipeline runs for many many miles and under many many other unsuspecting people including some in a very high risk area near by. just north of where the pipeline exploded, another section of the very same pipeline has been identified by pg & e's own documents as having a risk of failure that is unacceptably high. it runs right through heavily populated south san francisco. negal, city manager says pg & e has provided him with next to no information. >> they do not want to disclose where these pipes are, what the condition they are necessarily. so it's been very limiting to say the least. >> reporter: what if there's a leak or explosion along this unacceptably risky south san francisco pipeline. >> the decision makers within the city and emergency services folks should certainly know where these pipes are and what their condition is. >> reporter: or even if the pipeline is works. >> i can assume it's still pressurize to this point. i don't believe they've turned it off. >> reporter: all negal can use is a map from the mapping service. the map says the pipeline runs up enupericero for 1.2 miles. and pg & e's own paper work says that the radius would be 114 feet. so we wondered what's around 114 feet, better yet, let's look in 40. neighborhoods, lots and lots of neighborhoods, running all the way into san francisco. >> it could happen seems to me any where any time, that's the concern i have right now. >> especially in high risk areas. >> exactly. >> reporter: so what's pg & e's response to the city and the pipeline? well they can't talk about it, they say for reasons of national security and the ongoing ntsb investigation. reporting live, consumer editor tom vacar, ktvu channel 2 news in for for the second time in two days a school was evacuated. officials say two teachers reported smelling gas in their classrooms, they say the smell was likely caused when a heater was turned on this morning. classes at crest more were cancelled for the rest of the day. be sure to stay with ktvu for continuing coverage and the latest developments on that fire and explosion in san bruno. you can also get information any time by going to our website ktvu.com. contra costa authorities are getting a report of a third sexual assault. a woman was attacked last night in the regency apartments in unincorporated walnut creek. the complex was the sight of three assaults earlier this summer. andre mutal was arrested and charged with those assaults and remains in jail. the suspect in last night's attack is described as a white man in between 20 and 30 years old, about 6 feet tall with a full beard. >> he was going back to her apartment as she opened the door, someone came in right behind her and forced his way in. the suspect was last seen wearing jeans, a short sleeve shirt and a hoodie. sarah shourd's family remains hopeful tonight that she will soon return to the u.s. after the iranian government allowed the american hiker to travel to iman earlier today. shourd's fiance and friend remain in an iranian prison. they've been held there since july of 2009 for allegedly crossing the iranian boarder. meanwhile, shourd's aunt says she's been making a bridal veil for her niece. >> it helps me to look at it and continue this joyous feeling and know that she and shane are going to be getting married. >> bouer and pattel's family are hopeful that the iranian president will bring the two men with him when he attends a meeting next week. at 79 days and counting, lawmakers are not any where close to reaching a deal. democrats want to limit cuts, republicans don't want to raise taxes. >> we're working hard. >> off camera the state senate president's office told us there was no progress of note today. there will be no new talks over the weekend but talks will resume on monday. brown's campaign announced today he'll be getting some help from a high level democrat which whom he's not always had the best relationship. former president bill clinton plans to campaign here next month. it is regarded as one of the most popular tourists destinations in the bay area having the allure to attract people from around the world. tonight a new report indicates workers there are being treated poorly. john sasaki is in san francisco with this story, john. >> reporter: china town is one of the crowned jewels of san francisco but today a new report shows a dark cloud hanging over this part of the city. >> with its legendary culture and regime. >> these numbers are criminal. >> reporter: the uc berkeley ucsf and san francisco survey found that most people don't make minimum wage. 76% are not paid overtime. and 64% received no on the job training leading to more injuries. >> she did not get minimum wage, there are no health benefits, no life insurance at all, she worked long days with no breaks. >> they are not getting minimum wage if their hips are being ripped off, they are at risk. >> reporter: and this is what poverty looks like. a tiny apartment where a restaurant worker lives with his wife and two children. >> this is just how we live, of course this is how we survive. >> reporter: the chinese progressive association which has spear headed the effort says many of the restaurants mistreat their workers. workers say their business are not guilty. >> do they make the minimum wage here in san francisco? it's not just because he grew up here, they have another very good reason. bay area volunteers tonight are helping a young veteran who was injured in afghanistan. it is a model program who gives back to those who sacrifice for their country. ktvu's health and science editor john fowler joins us now in san ramon with the story. >> reporter: i want you to look at this. >> he gets out, i want you to get the wheelchair. >> reporter: volunteers showed up for ryan sykes. the north californian native won the bronze star for an event he still can't discuss. >> my whole goal is to walk again. >> reporter: today a steadying hand from the sentinels of healing foundation. >> what i learned is to look at the potential not the injury. >> reporter: cocklin organized volunteers. shapell holmes is donating a year of rent. >> we're all sponsoring ryan. >> you may think, this is tough. but you've done tough things in your life and i've gotten through it. >> i know that a brain injury takes a lot of hard work but it can be overcome. >> reporter: sykes says while relearning to walk, he plans to go to college. reporting live in san ramon, health and science editor john fowler. and we have more now on that developing situation at san francisco airport involving a us air jet that had to make an emergency landing just a short time ago. the plane was in route from phoenix to hawaii with 175 passengers on board and six crew members. we are told that an emergency developed about a thousand miles offshore when smoke filled the cockpit, forcing the pilots of that plane to make an emergency landing at sfo. the plane did land safely and we are now being told that airport officials are arranging for another aircraft to take the passengers to hawaii. a palo alto family says they have an idea of what might have sparked a two alarm fire that seriously damaged their home. john beamer says he woke up this morning to heat and smoke in the room. he didn't call for help right away though because he thought he could put out the flames by himself. he also evacuated his mother, father and 90-year-old grandmother. firefighters arrived but had to pull back from the bedroom when near by power lines started arching. it took two hours to put out the fire. no other homes ended up being damaged. beamer's mother says he often lights candles in his room and might have forgotten to put one of them out. some of oakland's finest were honored today for their hard work protecting the city. the awards and recognitions ceremony was held this morning in the oakland city council chambers. command staff handed out awards. chief bats spoke out on the work of the officers. calling them guardians. 17 officers were honored. among the awards presented today include the medal of valor, the medal of merit and the chief certificate of comendation. jason kidd returned to his stomping grounds to speak to kids. kids say the school does not receive funding from the state and relies on donations. >> the jason kidd foundation has partnered up not just the school but a group of kids to give them the opportunity to give them the tools to be successful as they grow up. >> reporter: kidd says his -- his foundation will receive $100 for every assist he receives with the mavericks? >> i try to accommodate to each player. i try to get into what makes them better and work on that. >> prior to the game i asked you about your offense, who's the game breaker, who's the player we can look forward to. and you said hey can i talk about my defense. sounds like you're pretty pumped up about that. >> we've implemented a new scheme, the kids have just picked it up. they are aggressive, they are attacking. it's fun to watch. >> you had a low scoring game last week, a tie. are you expecting a little more more input today?
