Local police are treating this ferris wheel directly behind me where the accident occurred as a crime scene until they can figure out what caused this ride to go so wrong. It wasnt what anyone wanted to see at the county fair, families were screaming for help. Ive got three kids that fell from the ferris wheel. Three kids. Reporter three children were thrown from this ferris wheel at the Greene County fair in tennessee and fell 30 to 45 feet. I felt real bad for the little kids. They screamed a little bit and hit the ground, just laying there. Reporter investigators say one of the passengers cabins with the three children rose in the sky, as it rose, it got caught against the cabin turned more than 90 degrees hanging upside down horizontally when the children spilled to the ground. I was hollering, please stop, stop, stop the machine. Seemed like it was a millennium before it stopped. Reporter it was around 6 15 p. M. Paramedics raced to the carnival and found the young victims lying on the deck. I didnt see movement. I see blood coming from their mouth. I actually thought they were dead. It was so horrific. Reporter two had to be airlifted to a nearby medical center. The third rushed in an ambulance. This is rescue command. Theres a forklift i think on the way to the scene now. Reporter rescue crews had to bring in a fire truck ladder and forklift to reach and ultimately free the rest of the riders trapped on the ride. This morning an investigation into the incident is underway. The three children are in recovery. But all carnival rides closed until further notice. Police are already on the scene this morning continuing their investigation. Releasing the names of those children. Lara. All right, steve, hope theyre okay. From that accident to the latest on the 10yearold boy killed at a kansas water park on what is known ased as the worlds tallest water slide. That slide closed as we learn new details about the tragedy and investigators try to determine what went wrong. Abcs alex perez is in kansas city with the very latest. Good morning, alex. Reporter hey, good morning, lara. Investigators have not said what they believe went wrong here. Witnesses say people were scrambling to try to help the boy but it was simply too late. This morning, new startling details on that terrifying accident that killed 10yearold caleb schwab. Police saying he died of a fatal neck injury at the end of the ride. There was a very loud, just a boom, boom. I knew immediately that somebody had fallen off the raft. Eyewitness steve casteneda said he saw schwab, the son of adult women when the boy somehow fell out. Steve, a registered nurse, raced to help and police say both got minor facial injuries. One of the guys was still screaming, and so i told him, i said theres nothing we can do. Reporter abc news was at the jawdropping ride verruckt german for insane, when it happened two years ago. You must be at least 46 to ride and two of the riders on the raft must weigh a c minimum of 400 pounds. Plummeting 17 stories in seconds sending tubers racing down it at nearly 70 miles per hour. Heres some good news, george, anybody whos been delayed three hours or more can now get a voucher from delta. A power outrage but how come theres no backup generator . Linsey davis has more. Reporter striking similarities. Both around the same age and lived in new york. Both out for a jog in broad daylight, and it appears both were sexually assaulted. Authorities are saying nothing at this point connecting the two cases but both communities are not only grieving but fearful a killer is on the loose. This morning, residents in princeton, massachusetts, are on edge as Police Search for a killer. We have a young woman who appears to be a murder victim and you cant be too careful right now. 27yearold Vanessa Marcotte went for a jog on sunday at 1 00 p. M. And never came back. Marcotte lived in new york city where she worked for google as an account manager. Her social media pages showcase her life including photos with her mother who she was visiting in massachusetts. We do not know if this was a random act. We are asking the residents of princeton and the surrounding areas to use an abundance of caution. Were asking the public to be careful and to be vigilant. If you have seen anything, or seen someone within the last 24 hours that is suspicious to you we are asking you to report it to the massachusetts state police. Reporter Police Sources tell abc news investigators are looking into signs of sexual assault. This is the second h case in less than a week involving a young woman murdered while going out for a jog in one week ago and 193 miles away last week Karina Vetranos body was found by her father in queens, new york. On monday night, the nypd held a Public Meeting in veteranos howard beach neighborhood to keep residents informed of the latest developments. So far we have collected several pieces of evidence from the crime scene that are being forensically processed as we speak. We hope to have all of the results back very soon. Reporter the working theory in the queens case is that karinas killer may have been a stranger, which is somewhat unusual. In 2014, for example, of all homicide victims only 11 were know. Both cases remain unsolved. Authorities in massachusetts are now telling people to jog in pairs. You got to be safe. Lets talk to nancy grace about this. Our friend from hln. Nancy, police say theres nothing to suggest the cases are linked at all but it is a striking coincidence. Well, i would not go that far just yet until we get a dna confirmation of that. That theyre saying that is the geographical distance between the two. Youve got about a threehour drive between them, but look at the similarities as you have pointed out. Both women avid runners visiting their parents on a local jogging path. Already into their jog. I believe that the second victim was sexually assaulted because she was found unclothed. Just like karina vetra, of them, i believe, were dragged. The second victim was found deep into the woods while Karina Vetrano had grass in her hands. Im wondering right now where is the iphone . Where is the cell phone belonging to Vanessa Marcotte . Because if they have that, that would give them so much evidence. If they dont have it, that would suggest to me that the killer has retained it. Another issue is theyre saying she was killed by a random killer. Killer take the time in broad daylight this is sunday at 1 00 in the afternoon to burn the fingertips, the feet and facial features of the victim . All the identifying characteristics. Why . If you kill somebody you want to leave the scene immediately. Why stick around to do that and take the time to drag the body into the woods . Think about it. I am thinking about it and im listening to you and sounds like if you were an investigator your working theory would be these are tied together until its disproved . Well, again, the threehour distance is a problem because in the first one Karina Vetrano, it suggests that it is random. At first we thought the killer had taken souvenirs or mementos. Thats very common especially amongst serial killers but those headphones and left shoe were found ten feet away. In this case police are not releasing that evidence. Second one not being random. Ill tell you why. Both of them were on secluded jogging paths known mostly to locals. But this second one, thats out basically in a very, very rural area. There were no vague rants. There were no transients. There were no people out on the beach having a bonfire. This is a half a mile in a very rural area. I wouldnt even call it a subdivision. Who would be there . Who would know about that jogging route . Just a half a mile from her moms home. Its got to be a local. You say thats quite different from queens where there had been that area had been known to be a place where varants and others congregated . Yeah, and you know what, in fact, i can emphasize that in another way. Police have gone to another measure. Its a little unusual in Karina Vetranos case, they have actually pulled up all the summons from the last six months transients, people out there smoking pot, littering, whatever they can find. That was done in the son of sam case. He was caught because he got a ticket by a fire hydrant and they are pulling up everybody they know in the vetrano area that had been out there loitering, so to speak, not so in this case out of boston in princeton. Its so rural, it points to a local. Thats why i think they may not be connected. Dr. Richard besser is here now and theres a brandnew study that says, rich, that people under 39 years old might not need to be screened for high dont get a blood test youre not getting good care. The committee that makes recommendations wanted to see whats the evidence that testing people under 39 for high cholesterol makes a difference . What they found there have been no studies to look at that. You want everybody to eat right, to exercise, maintain a good weight. And its not clear you want to start younger people on statins so what theyre saying is there really isnt good evidence to test healthy young adults for cholesterol. So, rich, if youre 39 or younger, you go to a doctor for your physical, they suggest it, should you say no . I wouldnt say no. But id say why . And there are some reasons, theres certain medical conditions that can run in families that do make it worthwhile, but it shouldnt be one of these routine tests that you get your checkup and talk to your doctor and boom, they check your cholesterol. Wait a second. Its not like a mammogram. I would sort of say why not. Why not get your blood checked . Your cholesterol to see if you have a family condition, but then after that the recommendation are that you dont start men until age 35, women until age 45 then only if they have high risk of letter disease. You end up risking labeling people. Ive seen kids labeled with, oh, they have high cholesterol when you want everybody to be doing the same thing and only do it at a point where youll decide this is when you would start a staten and do something very different. Poor ralphie was so frustrated what we want to do is give our kids the tools to express themselves and regulate their emotion. Swearing has really aggressive undertones and what we want to do is to help our children be assertive. To express themselves in a respectful way. How about find a word that means what theyre trying to say. Slips like you say. Theyre doing it more for effect and almost start laughing the minute they use the word. Yeah, yeah, and so what we want to do is a, you know, what are some effective ways. If your child does verbally transgress, you know, what are you going to do about it . They actually yell at me and its gotten to the point where we do the dollar jar. We do the dollar jar but i dont hear it from them which im glad and i dont want to hear them say it. You definitely do not want to go with the wash their mouth out with soap approach. My wife slips a lot more than our kids slip and we dont make a big deal dr. B. We were playing miniature golf on saturday night down at the shore and she slipped a lot and it was our son who called her out and said, hey, mom, there are kids around so, you know, you set the standard and everyone calls each other out when rich, if i threw my wife under the bus like that, id get in so much trouble. How do you prevent the situation from happening and then if you cant prevent it how do you physically defend yourself. When you looking at the prevention side, you can do some preliminary work like really pick a safe route. Dont pick something thats remote. Pick something that you can actually go to a safe location if you are caught off guard and then also buddy up. Be with someone. Dont go alone. Go with someone yo dog and also dont do the same thing every day. Right . Yeah, best routine is no routine when it comes to your personal security. I thought that was a great line. Definitely because you dont want to be predictable and dont want a potential stalker to be able to catch you off guard. All these tips are so important. And also, if you dont feel like the path is safe, dont go. Listen to that intuition inside. Either get to a treadmill, get to your gym and still get your workout in. Also when youre running, you want to be aware of your surroundings. Its called situational more aware of your surroundings. It can save your life. Great example with running, cut the distractions out. Dont be listening to your ear phones. Everyone loves listening to your favorite track list but i challenge you to go out and have a new mindful experience and experience nature and just be aware. Really good advice and also just the fact youve got to do it with somebody, i mean, in light jogging alone. If for some reason you come across a problem, do you have some simple moves that we could learn from you right now . I have a lot. Im going to highlight sought combatives for you. Its some basic upper and lower body moves. Im going to invite my attacker. Dont worry, im not going to hurt him. The first just to let you know combatives, form your body into a weapon. If you look at the attacker, the primary target is the face and shorter its going to be hard to necessarily get to access someones face so the first thing i want to show you is a lower body combative. Its a defensive push kick, and im taking the ball of my foot into the groin of the attacker. And im using my hip as a power force to gather as much power and strength i can. Its just an example. When i do that do that defensive body kick, the body came down and now i can use upper body combatives like a palm strike which is better for women. The heel of your less fragile than the fist, for example, the knuckles. A palm strike obviously not to his face but to the pad im driving through. You would want us to do that to the face. Exactly. Onetwo punch, the lower and then rate to the face. Its a great way just to highlight strategy. How do i actually use these combatives to work so im going for the lower body and going for the face with my palm strike and also another example is a hammer fist, its similar to banging on a door. For the side of your fist to target the back of someones head. For example, if i had him down here and i had access to the back of the head, i could use it and then escape to a safe location. All wowing the crowd sunday night in qualifying rounds. We caught up with their moms between the action at the p g family home in rio before they headed into tonights youve been here before. Yeah. Youve been through all the excitement and nerves. How is rio been for you, natalie . I think its different because gabrielle is four years older and to see the way shes handling everything now. More settled. Move grounded. For nelly biles, her daughter simone stepping into the olympic spotlight for the first time. The pressure on simone, does she feel it and all the commentators are saying shes going to win five gold medals. Thats pressure. I think simone tries real hard not to Pay Attention to what the expectation is of others. I believe theres more pressure on me than on simone because i am so nervous. I mean, i am just a wreck. I want to know what it was like when you were with your daughters and saw their commercials run for the first time. The first time i saw simones commercial it really brought tears to my eyes. Oh, yeah, i can go bigger. I said she really has moves like no other. And as their daughters prepare to compete tonight the moms are taking it all in, laurie, the first u. S. Hispanic born gymnast to make the olympic team in 30 years. Talk about being a proud mom. [ speaking a Foreign Language ] proud, very proud of laurie and grateful for the moment. There were days i would get discouraged and shed be like, lets do this, mom with a big smile. U. S. Womens Gymnastics Team. Are they going to take home the gold . For sure. Were contemplating it. No doubt . No doubt. No doubt. The one thing this team still need, guys, is a nickname. The 1996 Gold Medal Team was known as the magnificent seven and you may remember the 2012 crew was called the fierce five so what happens on that floor tonight could shape what we call the ladies of 2016. Ill start with you, dominique. Youve been there and know exactly what these girls are feeling right now. How do you think that theyre handling the pressure . Whats it like for them as they approach this massive competition today . I would say the night before last night they did not get a very good sound sleep. I remember being extremely nervous before the 96 olympic games. However, throughout the day, theyre really going to do their normal routine. Theyre have their normal training, eat what they normally eat and dom back and theyll focus on certain affirmations to make sure they have the right mindset but i guarantee those moms did not have a great night of sleep either. What was it like for your mom . Do you remember . I can only imagine. I cant watch my daughter play tennis. And its not the olympics. Im a mother of two girls and two and a half years and 11monthold many times. I cant speak for my mothers perspective but my coach was nervous. She was a huge support system to me as well. They spend more time with their coaches than their mothers. Mckayla, i want to ask. You had that game face. We love having you with us. You were a member of the 2012 team that won gold. I know injuries derailed you from being at this olympics. You know these girls personally. How would you say that these girls, the glam squad i love that name. What you know about them. Theyre doing amazing. I talked to aly today. Its their normal. Its their everyday routine and theyll go out and do their thing. Theyll have fun and enjoy it and hope flooe at the end of the day come home with a gold medal. What do you think they do in the moments before . I was a competitive diver. How do you control your breathing when youre walking out there and have to look totally composed and we talked how do they do it today . For myself i always relied on my faith. I always had a prayer in my head, i can do all things through christ who strengthens me. Many of those girls may have the same and affirmations and prelims they were ten point as head of the nearest competition so they dont have pressure. Theres no competitors out there that are close to them. Their biggest competition is between themselves. Yeah. You guys will be watching, i know. Definitely. So excited. So excited.
