And unusual piano concerto by the American composer Lew Harrison at its premiere in New York on this day in 1985 the famous jazz pianist Keith Jarrett for whom it was written was the soloist. Lou Harrison's music was often marked by its a collective blending of east and west and on occasion Harrison employed non western or unusual instruments in his scores including his own homemade Japanese style constructed from old brake drums and clay flower pots but that wasn't what made his piano concerto so singular and. Harrison said I've always wanted to write a piano concerto which utilizes 2 or 3 pianos onstage each tuned differently and Keith was willing to try that but in the end I decided to use one piano in a tuning I really enjoy. In Harrison's concerto the piano is not tuned to the equal temperament system in Western music since box to the Black Keys are tuned to the men. Evil system of mathematically exact intervals of 4th and 5th while the white keys reproduce the so-called Just intonation system common in the Renaissance and Baroque. And so the familiar instrument has an unfamiliar ring but one that Keith Jarrett la at times in the piece he said full chords sound like Bell. And he made a call to composers there to utilize African-American musical traditions and folk music as the basis for a new school of composition in America one of the people who heard him either literally or symbolically was George Gershwin his opera Porgy and Bess premiered in 1935 in Boston and he says of it Gershwin that is says of his opera Porgy and Bess is a folk tale it's people naturally would sing folk music and when I began to 1st work on the music I decided against the use of original folk material because I wanted the music to be all of one piece Therefore I wrote my own spirituals and folk songs but they're still folk music and therefore Porgy and Bess becomes a folk opera while divorce shock would approve very deeply of that treatment here is a selection from Porgy and Bess There's a boat that's leavin soon for New York with the Dallas Symphony orchestra and chorus and Litton conducting an arrangement or of a suite that Lytton created Porgy and Bess on j p r. In $889.00 and to need to foreshock was at the height of fame both as a check composer a nationalist composer and as a cosmopolitan musical force to be reckoned with and that juxtaposition is something somewhat unique for his life that year his 48th year of life he was elected to the Bohemian Academy of Arts and Sciences and celebrated that honor with a fall season composing holiday completing this symphony the 8th in 2 and a half months the next year he would briefly serve as the director of the Prague conservatory and then in $892.00 he would be appointed the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America in New York where he would write his New World Symphony his most well known orchestral work his 7th Symphony the d. Minor sometimes called his German symphony as it was modeled on Brahms was a stormy one and his 9th is an epic one is 8th in contrast to both of those is rather celebrate Tory and cheerful and in that sense goes against the grain of a lot of late 19th century music it's full of Czech flavored tunes and dances and it sounds as if it were based on actual folk melodies but that illusion is one divorce shock was proud of and it was his intention not to borrow check folk music but to make it it's got a traditional 4 movement structure possibly a nod to the academy itself as it's dedicated to the academy and to the Emperor Franz Yosef here is divorce x. 8 symphony in g. From a.p.m. American Public Media this is performance today I'm Fred Child when the 25 year old Mozart arrived in his new home of Vienna he was struck by something that every fashionable home had in common he called Vienna the city of pianos a month sorry it saw that as an opportunity he could write piano pieces that he could play in concert then he could publish and sell those very same pieces for people to play at home coming up Mozart's miniature version of this piano concerto a piece that works for piano and orchestra and in this smaller version for the home music for the city of pianos on the way in concert. The St Lawrence string quartet will join that Mozart concerto coming up in a few minutes while they also love to play music by living composers This is from their recording of the string quartet number one by Christos hot c.s. .
