Well, the past few years ive been getting requests from other writers who said, we would love to write about your show and can we interview you and talk about it. It is not one of the dirt, although there is a fun story about the time you had to fire harvey korman. What happened . Well, he was harvey was wonderful. There was no question about it. But sometimes hed be in a mood. But we could always kid him out of it. There would be no problem. He could change on a dime, like that. But then this one day we were rehearsing and he was not a happy camper and he was a little thought you can get that way with me because i know you and it is okay, but not with the guests. So that night after the show, i went in to his dressing room. I said why were you doing he said, well, im just not happy here. I said, okay, dont come back. Boom he said what . I said, well, if youre unhappy but you cant talk to our guests that way and you cant bring your unhappiness to work. Finally, he backtracked and he he said yes. I said, okay. This was friday. I said monday when we start next week though, when i see you monday morning, i want you to whistle and skip down the hallway at cbs. And so that monday, im walking towards the elevator by ow our rehearsal hall. It opened. Harvey came out, we kind of skipping down the hall. I howled. Did your idea about him change at all as you went through the process and learned more around got to know him a little bit . Is. Yeah. It is funny, you google him and you get all these contrary opinions. A lot of them are really simple. Simple story. Theres obviously he did break the law and he admits that he broke the law. But then theres examples of people who break the law who arent necessarily doing the wrong thing like one example i thought of is, rosa parks. You know . Back in her day, it was illegal where she lived for a black person to sit on the front of the bus and she was told to go sit on the back of the but and she refused. At that time that was breaking the law and half the country but we look back and now were grateful that she broke that law. Lets talk about your preparation. Because one of the things i really noticed is, even in that clip, your voice. Yeah. You really nailed the voice. He has kind of a distinctive deep voice. But it is not one that everyone knows. So as an actor to make that choice, thats a lot to take on. Im going to do this movie in a voice that is not familiar to me. Why did you want to do it, and was that an intimidating thing to take on . I favorite actors are the ones who kind of disappear in to their character. You dont see the actor on the screen. You see the character that theyre playing. The character that i was playing was this guy. Youre right, not everyone has seen his interviews or the documentaries about him. Were you listening to them nonstop . I put them in my earphones on repeat. I slept with them. I just listened and listened. Hes got asylum in russia. He had it extended a kunl of years ago. Hed like to come home. Chance . You know, i dont know. But the little bit that ive gotten to know him, i think what he cares about more than his own personal life i mean thats clear, he risked his life to do what he did is just the fact that were having this conversation right now about government accountability, about mass surveillance.
