This is All Things Considered I'm also Chang And I'm Audie Cornish We begin with a surprising admission from the White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney gave a press conference today in which he confirmed a key fact at the heart of the impeachment inquiry into President Trump Mulvaney admitted that the administration withheld aid to Ukraine until the country agreed to launch specific corruption investigations we're joined now by White House reporter there Asia Hello help us understand what movie confirmed today so one of the key things he confirmed was that he was part a part of this decision making process to hold up military aid to Ukraine and he talked about the reasons for that he said it was in order to force Ukraine to address corruption and also he talked about having them address this conspiracy theory that has been floating around from President Trump and others without evidence that the d.n.c. Server involving the d.n.c. Server and basically saying that Russia somehow was not involved in meddling in the 26 team election this isn't backed up by any us intelligence agencies but most of Amy said that this was something that he wanted Ukraine to look into and he did say that this wasn't focusing on political opponents like Biden's And that aid wasn't held up all over that here's some more of what he had to say I was involved with the the process by which the money was held up temporarily Ok 3 issues for that the corruption of the country whether or not other countries were participating in support of Ukraine and whether or not they were a cooperating in an ongoing investigation with our Department of Justice that's completely legitimate and when he talked about that ongoing investigation this was the thing involving the d.n.c. Server but now me is kind of walking that back he's saying that this money was not held up for anything related to that investigation about the server in Ukraine he's now. Saying that wasn't the case obviously his words were different during the press conference and he didn't make that very clear during the press conference another point of focus has been Rudy Giuliani the president's personal lawyer and the work to Leon he had been doing in Ukraine many of the officials who've testified have talked about the concerns that they had about his role what did moving he have to say about that he said this is the president's decision is it doesn't matter whether officials like it or not the president can delegate to who he wants as long as he follows the law even criticize some of the career officials who had been testifying before the House impeachment inquiry he's saying that they're motivated by policy differences and that whether the president's behavior was appropriate Here's some more on that and I have news for everybody get over it there's going to be political influence in foreign policy performative I'm talking Mr Carro that is going to happen elections have consequences and foreign policy is going to change from the Obama administration to the trumpet ministration Now what movie any is saying would seem to go directly against the White House's argument that this whole impeachment inquiry is baseless Why do you think Khomeini would then stand in front of this group of reporters and say what he did it's hard to say but the administration knew that he was going to get these questions and this is been a week when current and former officials were painting this picture of how the president and his aides basically acted to advance Trump's political goals and this seemed to be their effort to argue that what they did was standard and to tried to make this seem like this was just the way things are in the White House is standard operating procedure but but there seem to be some issues and that's why he's coming back and trying to clarify exactly what he meant but trying really likes to see his staff defending him in front of the press and so that might have been part of the reason why he was out there. Understand that movie didn't just make news about Ukraine there was also news about the next g. 7 summit was still to be held at the golf course at President Trump's a resort near Miami what's going on there is the move Amy says that won't profit from this and that they're doing it at a cost he said that this was Trump's idea and that he acknowledged that people are concerned about this but he said the president wanted to go ahead with this anyway because they felt like it was the Black best place to hold it that's n.p.r. White House reporter i.e. Sure Roscoe thank you thank you we're now going to turn to a congressman who's had a front row seat to the House impeachment inquiry Representative Scott Perry is a Republican from Pennsylvania he sits on the House Foreign Affairs Committee he's heard from many of the witnesses in the inquiry including Gordon Solomon that's the u.s. Ambassador to the European Union he testified today Congressman Perry Welcome to the program Ok thank you very much before we get into the testimony I want to start with those comments from White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney telling reporters that the hold up in military aid to Ukraine was tied to that country opening an investigation into the 2016 election and specifically whether or not they were cooperating with an ongoing investigation with the Department of Justice now n.p.r. Reporting from the d.o.j. Says that they were not aware of any in this investigation tied to military aid so did the chief of staff just publicly confirm the case Democrats have been making for weeks that this was a political decision yet I'm not sure he did that I unfortunately have been I did hear portions of the of what he said just on the air with you here today but I've been in the skiff all day and so I don't want to characterize his statements without hearing the whole thing but it's my understanding that he was switching subjects at the same time the 2 things have been conflated there one another for all tone right at the top of the program you may have heard him say I have news for everybody get over it there's going to a little influence in foreign policy is that why we should be looking at foreign policy. Well you got to understand as well that the American taxpayers work hard for their money and if we're going to spend that money on foreign aid and assistance whether it's Ukraine or Syria or anywhere they can people want to make sure that that America's interests are being furthered and so are America's interests the president's interests when it comes to the elections Well again he's looking at it investigations if I can characterize what I heard he's looking at talking about investigations that were ongoing regarding 2016 so those are those are things that happened in the past where I think that not only the president but the American people would like to know what is the final conclusion whatever happened with all this stuff where did it where did it come from where did it start and the Intelligence Committee assessments on that that it was Russia or not enough you believe well I think there are still lingering questions about the genesis of the steel dossier and its whatever component parts originated in in Ukraine and that's not that's not members of Congress saying that that's been widely widely reported and so again I think a lot of people want to know you know what the final answer there is and because we never did get a final resolution on that although I just want to make clear again the intelligence community has pointed to Russia on this and not Ukraine I want to move on to Ambassador Solomon's testimony because in his opening statement he wrote that President Trump directed someone and others to work with those personal attorney Rudy Giuliani on Ukraine and someone said he didn't want that that he would not have recommended that Giuliani or any private citizen be involved in these foreign policy matters as a House Foreign Affairs Committee Member How do you read that well 1st of all I got to be careful because I'm not allowed to characterize any of the testimony whether it was released or not from these depositions but that having been said having been said I think that any of the career career State Department bureaucracy informants . Services don't like it at all when somebody outside of of the administration so to speak is operating in that space and I jump in here Saleh is a businessman hotelier from the Pacific Northwest who donated a 1000000 dollars to Trump's inauguration and he's not a career bureaucrat and here he is saying that this should not have happened right but he's saying that because they want to work within the strict guidelines of the process within the agency that they were involved with and then he didn't see anything or I don't understand what you mean by that strict guidelines well that that you only deal with people that are that are agents of the government so to speak that they are on the diplomats and Ambassador diplomats and cetera and none of them seem to like it when there's any interference in that whatsoever whether they think it's furthering the United States the interest of the United States or not they seem to again I'm just going to characterize and paraphrase and this is just my perception from what I've heard overall generally is that they feel like they are the ones that are in control of the of the conversation regarding foreign service and diplomacy and don't like it when anybody outside of there it's only that Giuliani should have been involved this was not a mistake to you Well I didn't say that I you know I did say that at all but I do think it did it clouds it clouds of the water it does make things more complicated to say the least but whether it's better or not that remains to be seen do you agree with Mr Solomon again and others have said this that inviting a foreign government to undertake investigations for the purpose of influencing an upcoming u.s. Election would be wrong at something he said specifically yes to influence an upcoming election but I got to stress to you that the conversations that we've been dealing with that I'm familiar with all deal with the 2016 election and so you don't see the connection to Hunter Biden and son of a vice president who would be a future rival to be a problem well it certainly could be a problem but again if you're if you're investigating things that happened. In the past and they and they point to things that are currently existing Do you just with then quit the investigation I mean rooting out corruption which is a core function and I just I want to make sure I understand which investigation because we have the d.o.j. Saying look this isn't something we were investigating at the time yet that they did not want aid to Ukraine held up well the d.o.j. Doesn't decide on anything regarding aid to Ukraine in this regard that's the purview of the administration the State Department I'm sorry the Pentagon that they did not want to aid held up and the days that they weren't doing investigations all of that is emanating from the White House Giuliani and is it all well there to a future rival again I got to be careful what I can characterize from the hearings and what I can't but it's my understanding that there had been ongoing investigations in Ukraine regarding 2016 that were either ended abruptly or were were really had reoccurred prior to these all these conversations. Congressman I believe we're going to have to leave it there that's Congressman Scott Perry Republican from Pennsylvania also sits on the House Foreign Affairs Committee thank you for your time thank you. News I'm also Chang And I'm Audie Cornish Representative Elijah Cummings died early this morning at the age of 68 the Democratic congressman had multiple health challenges in recent years Cummings was sworn into Congress more than 20 years ago representing Baltimore the city where he was born and raised he was a fierce champion for civil rights even from a young age at 11 He desegregated a Baltimore City pool with a group of friends an angry mob threw bottles and stones at them and that mob violence scarred Cummings face but it didn't stop him Larry Gibson met Cummings when he was just 17 the Baltimore attorney says the 2 men were friends for the rest of Cummings life I was looking. Out last communication the last e-mail exchange was up to the 29th and it's sort of funny this e-mail is alive there is a multiple lives you Cummings or you have one Fantastics that I have never seen someone who is supposedly under the weather chick so much but I hope you are following your doctor's orders I will be in Alabama for a week beginning Tuesday don't impeach truck before I get back your brother Larry Gibson remembers their 1st meeting about 50 years ago I was a young lawyer he was in high school and the high school as the Hall of Fame but I'd never been an African-American he said it was time to do so well it normally the people it made it into the Hall of Fame were people in the sixty's in the sixty's lives as we can't wait that. School it only been desegregated since Brown versus Board of occasion he pressed and was in 1969 the 1st black admitted Baltimore City College the same with a high school hall of fame and that's when I met a larger at the school on the day of the ceremony so it's 17 he was already politically active it was already political activity was the class president and this was not you know blacks. So a minority in that school I have attended Howard University he graduated and then he went to how it University and then he was elected to precisely the same position which I dealt with as a student council president now why do you think that is what is it about his personality that struck you as a young man about it funny as a charm What do you think it was I had been try and stick you know all morning trying to put my senior lawyer in that he had a con of charisma that that gave people confidence that this man was for real that he was a leader and it was not. About him having met him as such a young man can you talk a little bit about his background because I'm reading here that he's one of 7 children of sharecroppers who came a century up from South Carolina during the Great Migration but his parents had been sharecroppers that come to Baltimore they were both up Pentecostal ministers and so in lodges mother and my mother were were friends they were church buddies so completely independent of of any contact between us this explains the oratory I think his best around. The absolutely. He told me that as a child his father would take he and his brother out to the airport was called tranship airport then and they were going anywhere but to sit up in the observation area and watch the planes take off and land that was this group as his father wanted him to sense that there are other parts of the world to not know when you're going to get there but it's not all here ball of war and he then came and testified as a congressman he comes that he came down to the Pearl legislature and testified before renaming the airport for Thurgood Marshall I remember is testable he says I've asked you he says no I am big. To rename this airport what they're going to Marshall can you give us also a sense of his connection to Baltimore and to the city obviously he represented the community but he seemed to really relish his roots there he rose to his roots day he was very much a part of the community and his Baltimore you loved him as a friend and as a neighbor and there was simply no sense of any distance and he was a large Ryall called Congressman Cummings but everybody well it is a lot what was it like to see him sworn in as the congressman from Baltimore and especially having met him as a kid. He was so proud of that for his parents it was like he was doing something for them that they could see that that was that was the big deal as I remember that that was the big deal to him Well Larry Gibson thank you so much for speaking about your friend with such joy and energy and our condolences all right Ok Thank you Larry Gibson is an attorney in Baltimore and professor at the University of Maryland School of Law We'll have more on a ledge a Cummings career in the u.s. House of Representatives but for now we'll end on this from his 1st speech on the House floor in 1996 and there's a point that Paren Mitchell said many many years ago that I say sometimes 20 times a day and it's a very simple point but it's one that I live by says I have a minute. 60 seconds in and forced upon me I did not choose it but I know that I must use it give account if I abuse it something if I lose it's only a tiny little minute but eternity is an end. A rescue appears to have taken place on the surface of Mars NASA engineers announced today that they have salvaged for now a key part of one of their probes N.P.R.'s Joe Palca has more Nasa's probe called Inside is supposed to study the interior of Mars One key instrument is called the mole it's a kind of thermometer that was supposed to pound itself into the ground 16 feet deep enough to measure the heat flow coming from the interior of the planet in February though after digging just 14 inches it stopped since then engineers on earth have been trying to come up with a strategy to get it moving again for the 1st time in 8 months we have definitive forward progress Troy Hudson is the instrument system engineer for the insight mission the mole has moved forward about 2 centimeters which to me definitively says there was not a rock in front of them all that had always been a possibility and now I think that possibility has been eliminated if it had been Iraq that would have been bad bad news we could encounter another rock later on but what stopped us from digging 8 months ago was not Iraq so if it wasn't Iraq what did stop the mole from moving well Hudson says it was the nature of the Martian soil to move forward there's a weight on a spring inside the mole that acts as a kind of pile driver thumping on the mole to drive it downward but the mole needs just a tiny bit of friction to allow it to move apparently the Martian soil wasn't providing any and all that pounding was completely useless Luckily the insight lander has a robotic arm so we brought the robotic arm in and used the scoop on the end of it to push sideways against the mole this drives it into the soil and increases the amount of friction resistance experiences that apparently did the trick now the mole is moving again but more slowly than engineers had expected but they think they know why all that in a. Affectional pounding only served to compact the soil beneath the mole Hudson says once they get through that compact patch things should pick up at least that's the hope Joe Palca n.p.r. News. News this is All Things Considered I'm also Chang And I'm Audie Cornish President Trump confirmed today that energy secretary Rick Perry plans to leave his post soon and Trump says he already has a replacement in mind the president says he'll announce that name at a rally tonight in Texas Perry has emerged as a central figure in the impeachment inquiry of Trump N.P.R.'s Jeff Brady joins us now and Jeff remind us what that role is in this impeachment investigation Well energy secretary Rick Perry was part of what's been dubbed the 3 amigos which also included Gordon Sandland ambassador to the European Union and Kurt Volker former envoy to Ukraine the 3 were charged with managing the u.s. Ukraine relationship and earlier this month President Trump said talking about that July 25th phone call he said he didn't want to make that phone call to Ukraine president. Linsky and he said that Perry pressed him to make that phone call and that's the one where Trump also pressed Zelinsky to investigate the president's political rival Joe Biden Perry later said that he did urge Trump influence Gaeta talk but that he wanted them to talk about strengthening energy ties in that he never mentioned Biden and now of course Democrats have issued a subpoena to Perry they want documents and communications related to a series of events related to the inquiry and Perry was given until tomorrow to comply with that so to be clear Perry is not accused of wrongdoing that's exactly right most of the people I talk with say Perry's focus in Ukraine was on energy especially the natural gas business and that's very important because Ukraine you know it's had trouble coming out from under Russia's shadow since the Soviet Union collapse in 1901 Russia tends to use its big gas supplies to achieve political objectives in Europe and the pipeline for that gas runs through Ukraine there's a lot of money and corruption in the gas business in Ukraine and most people I talk with say Perry was a force for trying to Westernize the gap. Business there to open the markets and get rid of the corruption now we do have some people including European Union ambassador Gordon Sandlin today he said that President Trump told Perry to consult with Rudy Giuliani about some of his work in Ukraine and that's raised some questions and Democrats in Congress are going to want to know more about the interactions between Giuliani and Perry as the impeachment inquiry continues before I let you go can we talk about his tenure at energy you was one of the president's original cabinet members he was and he's been criticized mostly by environmental groups for trying to help the struggling coal industry he met with coal executive Bob Murray in 2017 and there are photos that the of the 2 men hugging Perry also has been a booster for nuclear energy especially with young people he said he wants to make nuclear cool again but overall he really hasn't had a very controversial legacy at the agency. That's N.P.R.'s Jeff Brady thank you thank you vice president Mike Pence announced today after hours of talks with Turkey's president that the u.s. And Turkey have reached a deal to suspend the fighting in northern Syria it will be a pause in military operations for 120 hours while the United States facilitates the withdrawal of y p g from the affected areas in the safe zone the y p g r The Kurdish fighters that Turkey has been attacking just to remind everyone about this fast moving story the hostilities began after President Trump ordered on October 6th the withdrawal of u.s. Forces from northern Syria abandoning u.s. Kurdish allies there for details on today's agreement we're joined now by N.P.R.'s Peter Kenyon he's in Turkey's capital Ankara Peter hello So tell us more about what the u.s. And Turkey have agreed to at this point well as described by Vice President Mike Pence Turkey agrees to pause its military operation as we heard for 120 hours so roughly 5 days and over that time the white b.g. Kurdish fighters Turkey has been attacking they will withdraw from the border areas and Turkey wants to turn that area into what it calls a safe zone so if that withdraw all of the Kurdish fighters is completed within the 5 days and by the way a Pence's it's already begun then the pause in the Turkish military operation becomes a permanent cease fire Ok but before today's meeting Erica one was pretty clear about his position he said that he would never agree to a cease fire in northern Syria so what has changed since yesterday well the one big thing that changed is if this plays out as pens outlined these Kurdish fighters are going to move away from the border area that Turkey wants for its safe zone that has been Turkey's goal all along everyone refused to cease fire if the white b.g. Was still there on the border but he's also said if they leave their. Really no need for a military operation now if you turn that around and look at what's in this agreement for the Kurdish fighters it's a very different question and it looks like all they're getting is a halt to the Turkish operation which is certainly important especially for civilians but it gives the Kurdish fighters nothing politically makes no nod toward their aspirations for more autonomy so Kurdish acceptance of this over time will have to be something to watch Bens was at pains to say this agreement includes protecting religious and ethnic minorities so we'll have to see how that plays out as well while after this deal was announced in Fort Worth Texas President Trump suggested that you know everything that has happened this month was all part of some unconventional approach toward stability in the region Here's a bit of what he said this was something that they've been trying to get for 10 years it would last millions and millions of lives they couldn't get it without a little rough love as I call that I just put out they did a little bit of that at the beginning and then everybody said wow this is tougher than we thought when those guns start shooting they tend to do things so the question remains will this deal actually work on the ground this move to withdraw the Kurdish forces and that that will lead to peace in the region that's where the big questions come in I mean moving the white b.g. Kurds out of the safe zone area is a win for Turkey but how will Turkey hold that territory how many soldiers is a planning to commit 20 miles deep safe zone at one point it said it should be 300 miles wide it's a situation that would be much easier if the cease fire holds so that of course becomes the ultimate question. Another question comes to mind vice president Pence also said that u.s. Forces would reengage with Kurds in aiding this withdrawal of Kurdish fighters but given that Kurds are not allied with Syria how does that work well something the military is wanting to know as well the immediate comments of been well we're not really sure how this is going to work they're packing up they're leaving now do they stop that and facilitate this relocation and you know how will that facilitation be received by the y.p. Ji vice president didn't says the u.s. Has been in touch with the Kurds he says they are willing to move in that is what we will be watching to see in fact he says they welcome the cease fire and how are the Kurdish forces and people living in the region reacting to all of this well so far we're seeing reports of celebre Torrie gunfire in some Kurdish areas now it remains to be seen if that will hold true once the full parameters of this deal become more clear it's possible that the phrase cease fire is overwhelming everything else in the very early going of this agreement as far as the Kurdish population is concerned which is very understandable but the question of course is will that reaction last That's N.P.R.'s Peter Kenyon in on caret Turkey thanks very much Peter thanks also. You're listening to All Things Considered from n.p.r. News. The new animated children's movie abominable seems innocent enough the Chinese girl finds a Yeti a mythical creature also known as the Abominable Snowman she's not dangerous. Look at him either yet she and her friends set out on a grand adventure to return the Yeti to its home but in Vietnam the Philippines and Malaysia the abomination in the movie is not the Yeti but an image of a map of the South China Sea N.P.R.'s Elizabeth Blair explains abominable is a co-production between the American studio Dream Works and the Chinese company Pearl studio in a promotional interview Pearl studio producer Pailin Chalo says since the movie is largely set in China it was a great advantage to have Chinese artists working on it they were kind of our gut check and authenticity check all throughout the film everything from the look of the characters and the look of the landscapes to the personalities in one scene the main character looks at a map of China and the surrounding countries dad always wanted me to travel the world someday and on that map there's a you shaped dotted line that encompasses almost the entire South China Sea It's known as the 9 dash line it's a big kind of land grab or sea grab Jeffrey Wasserstrom is the author of China in the 21st century what everyone needs to know he says under international agreements China does not have exclusive rights to the entire South China Sea an area rich in resources and use for trade but Beijing has to simply ignore that and call that an illegitimate ruling that is not Ok with other much smaller countries in the region the image of the map caused Vietnam to remove the movie from theaters according to a Vietnamese official on Twitter the Philippines foreign secretary called for a boycott of Dream Works but Jeffrey Wasserstrom says the 9 dash line is a calm. An image in China it's in textbooks and classroom maps he says it helps China's communist government tell a story about its power to its own people the Chinese Communist Party is asserting that every time that there is a reference to visual or spoken their view of the size of the China that they claim to legitimately rule has to be as big as possible there's a certain irony to the protests of the movie by small countries like Vietnam says Wall Street Journal reporter Eric Schwartz all he's writing a book about China and Hollywood it's often China that is punishing studios by rejecting a film or not showing a film and denying that market access it's less common for a country like Vietnam or some of the other Southeast Asian countries that are responding to abominable to counter China's portrayal Schwartzel ads even though abominable was designed to appeal to Chinese audiences is not doing very well at the box office there Elizabeth Blair n.p.r. Jefferson Public Radio from southern Oregon University. N.p.r. News this is All Things Considered I'm Audie Cornish and I'm the Chuang the European Union and the United Kingdom have agreed to a brags it withdrawal agreement the agreement paves the way for the u.k. To leave at the end of this month British Prime Minister Boris Johnson expressed optimism at an e.u. Meeting in Brussels now is the moment for us to get BRICs dumb and then together to work on building a future partnership which I think can be incredibly positive both for the u.k. And for the e.u. Well Boris Johnson has a nother hurdle ahead of the deal faces fierce opposition in the British parliament and for more on that we turn now to N.P.R.'s Frank Langfitt in London Hey Frank All right so 1st of all what is in this deal Well I think the most important thing about this deal frankly Elsa is it avoids customs post on the island of Ireland which I got to be honest I think would have been disastrous not only would have slowed trade it could have sparked violence but it does this by creating this requirement that Northern Ireland which of course is a part of the United Kingdom would actually do customs checks on some goods coming from the rest of the u.k. Across the Irish Sea Now Boris Johnson he more or less promised politicians Northern Ireland he would not do this but he clearly saw that this was the only way he could get the e.u. To consent I say Ok So would you say that the e.u. Fared pretty well in both current deal they are this is a very good deal for them I think they were very enthusiastic about I think they're proud that they got this done it's been I can't even keep track. It's feels like more than 2 years of negotiations they're avoiding a hard border they're curtailing smuggling through cost these customs checks that I mentioned Northern Ireland is going to remain aligned with a limited set of each rules as to pertain to some goods that'll reduce the risk of unsafe products slipping into the e.u. From Northern Ireland minutes explicit expected to be ratified by the European parliament I got to say though today amid all the celebration it was a bit of melancholy Donald Tusk is the president of the European Council and this is how he put it from a lot what I feel today is frankly speaking less because in my heart I will always be remain well they have that so it's a strength. Side story forward though. So there he is sounding as if there's some inevitability here but this still has to get through the British parliament so so who are Johnson's toughest opponents in the parliament right now where his biggest problem l.c. Is he's his Conservative Party doesn't have a majority and he relies on the Democratic Unionist Party which happens to be very inconveniently from Northern Ireland they have 10 votes and he's just an alienated them by agreeing to what is effectively a customs border in the middle of the Irish Sea which he pretty much promised not to do so the democratic union say they're going to vote against this they will bring could bring some other Conservative Party lawmakers with them the vote is going to be on Saturday it's going to be a big showdown it is possible that the prime minister could lose this well what happens if Parliament rejects this what will happen is he is now required by law actually to ask for an extension from Brussels one assumes that yes yes there be the 3rd if I can keep track of all of this but also I think more importantly could open the door for many opposition party lawmakers in Parliament to push to take this all back to a 2nd referendum to the people so after more than 3 years of your exit what they're saying they want is to give a final say to the people you know King That's N.P.R.'s Frank Langfitt in London thanks Frank happy to do it also. The company called we work is in trouble yes it raised more than $10000000000.00 over the past 2 years but now the workspace sharing company is reportedly just months away from running out of money now most of their funds came from a single venture capital fund called the vision fund Jacob Goldstein from our Planet Money podcast has this look at the vision funds impact not just on we work but on many of the 1000000000 dollar startups that have transformed Silicon Valley a big venture capital fund used to. Be a few $1000000000.00 then the vision fund launched in 2017 with $100000000000.00 It was so much bigger than traditional funds that it wasn't just different in degree it was different in kind patrician Akash works at Trinity ventures a venture capital firm in Silicon Valley She told me a story about the vision fund and a company called Wag it's an on demand dog walking ever for dog walkers in 2017 a cuss considered investing $10000000.00 in whack she studied the business and she found it was growing but it wasn't clear that it was going to work long term for a large number of people it just seemed too early to invest $10000000.00 So the cost passed. And then a few months later the vision fund invested in Wag they didn't invest $10000000.00 or $20000000.00 How much did they invest $300000000.00 the vision fund is run by the c.e.o. Of Softbank a Japanese telecom firm and the fund raise a lot of money from Saudi Arabia the funding climbed our request for an interview but patrician a conscious says there was a logic behind the funds massive investments in companies like wag and we work in the notion what we're going to give the companies we invest in an unfair advantage because you can hire more engineers you can sell your product cheaper at a bigger loss you can use the money just to smoke your competitors right leave them in the dust soon other investors started to follow the vision fund a few months after wag got 300000000 another dog walking service raised 155000000 from another fund and the arms race was on companies started competing to raise massive amounts of money by telling the most audacious story about how big they could get and how fast and no one was better at telling this story than Adam Newman the founder of we work how many cities are you in 75 cities 25 countries 45 different languages 250000 members and counting we work declined our interview request this is Adam Newman speaking at a mayor's conference last year he's pitching we work as something much more than just an office rental company we want to bring your jobs will bring a place to live will bring education and this is important will bring corporate America in less than 2 years the vision fund and Softbank put more than $10000000000.00 into we were in the bigger we were got the more money at last and then early this year the vision fund stopped pouring more money into we work we were trying to go public but investors weren't interested now the company is laying off workers and looking for new sources of cash the vision fund is likely to lose money on its investment and we work it's not clear how the fund will do overall but the people behind the fund are waiting to find out they were. To raise money to launch a new fund that will be even bigger than the vision from Jacob Goldstein n.p.r. News. You're listening to an encore edition of The World Cafe I'm Calais of let's check in on the ever evolving world of contemporary country music to ask the question who's Orville pack. That seems to be a big question for people is like where I come from and if my past there's a reason people are curious what to look like a bandit always wearing his cowboy hat and Lone Ranger mask his face obscured by fringe but more importantly the music he makes is intriguing and like his outfit it's a pastiche of influences people respond to his costume his music and the forthright way he sings about sexuality I really just genuinely set out to make a country record as a fan of country music you know and. I sing about men the same way that may be you know Johnny Cash sings about when it saddle up cowboys and cowgirls it's Orville Pac he performs live and we chat on World Cafe. It was such a pleasure to talk to or I think you're really going to like meeting him also got music this hour from material and Prince and new stuff from the National that we did started with Ani Di Franco and back back back it's not a homerun call it's a song it's on World Cafe.
