News. Hello this is Dan Damon with world update from the b.b.c. In London to have a look at social media the Dan Damon journalist page on Facebook at the b.b.c. Dan Damon on Twitter to contribute to the discussion that we're having this week about transport and pollution and cities we're going to talk about a bike is today they like normal cycles they have a bit of extra help there's a battery and something that gives wheel a bit of a boost some more sophisticated than that they're popular with commuters not it seems with the mayor of New York City who wants to find those who are speeding on East cycles much too heavily according to Isa close they say they're helping cut congestion and pollution Well bikes thing where you are and what's being done to change the level of pollution to improve the traffic picture of the transport picture in your town or city at the a.b.c. Then they went on Twitter or on Facebook there's a Dan De Mint journalist page all of that coming up we begin in China the lineup of China's top decision making body has changed the Standing Committee of the Politburo now looks different revealed at the ceremony at the great hall of the people the president Xi Jinping has been given a 2nd term in office Whoops that's not really news after being confirmed as the country's most powerful leader in decades premier Li Chung also retains his seat but there are 5 new members dissent not tolerated in fact severely punished and not just in the usual spheres of politics and human rights the Chinese government is sensitive on many things says Tim Frank's been finding out. You clean credits of the addicted an online drama about gay high school students it aired last year quickly gaining 10000000 viewers but before the 1st season was over it was pulled by the authorities they deemed it unfit for viewing the Chinese government decriminalized homosexuality 20 years ago a few years later they stopped classifying it as a mental illness but the China net Services Association still categorizes homosexuality as vulgar content that needs to be censored indeed in its official guidelines homosexuality sits in that regard alongside sexual violence and incest fan Pawpaw is a gay Chinese filmmaker for the state to administration of film television and radio then they are allowed any a or less being films to be released so it is literally banned by the authorities do they explain why the never is almost a mysterious for us we don't know why they're relating is like that a lot of things in China happened. For sure they'll want to do something to show all we are sort of a sort of we are working and some of the regulation could be enforced but actually some of the regulation also has been forgotten on one side there are so many bad regulations on the other side in Chinese not societies or by law we mean it's not a society ruled by law even though there are so my knee bad laws and regulations but still there are some space your home workers for example have a film festival we never got to license from the government we are always try to have it in some smaller venues. And Brasi space here's. Is the attitude getting more permissive in the sense that you can work in the gray areas on one side or I see the Authority has being more and more district is years of certain space like the Internet and activities offline there are stronger censorship but on the other side to optimistic because to me see the people in China go getting more and more open minded more people trying to help sill it's very complex feeling from me you've been speaking with pretty openly you concerned at all about what might happen if you do speak to me this week I don't know or. I think there will be the worse the result of censorship when other people censor you you start to censor yourself so I always try to be free to express myself I don't want to get stale censored that's found pop or ending a report from Tim Franks We'll hear more from Tim later on the substandard issue if you like of what does the new leadership in the Chinese Communist Party do to change things there. Let's go to Kenya the Supreme Court hit by a shortage of judges apparently so unable to hear a petition calling for the cancellation of the repeat of the election planned for Thursday tomorrow a lot of people is our Africa Security Correspondent this sounds dramatic timing. Yes indeed I'm in Kenya was looking forward to hearing what the Supreme Court would say regarding this case but now we heard that 5 judges could not make it one of them last night her vehicle driver was there was attacked and shot another one is said to be having treatment 2 can't make it we don't know exactly why another judge out of town and could not get a flight and so just the 2 women that could not constitute a quorum to hear and rule on this petition So as things stand it appears the elections will go ahead on Thursday. And easy if so short of judges is it intimidation. Well it's not exactly clear but that's what for example the opposition is suggesting there may not that one of the top lawyers of the opposition James a wrangle was speaking just after this statement from the chief justice and he said these are not ordinary circumstances that is no court incidents and it's an attempt to undermine the independent institutions of governance Ok well the election looks like it will go ahead tomorrow then but the opposition probably won't take part or all what do you expect to happen. While the opposition candidate Raila Odinga says that. He withdrew from the elections he said that there was a failure to bring about electoral reform and he doesn't trust that the electoral commission will be credible in the way it carries out the process so if the election then goes ahead obviously it would just be the main incumbent candidates who are. Going to you know that people be able to vote. But the opposition have said they will not protest we probably suspect that their supporters will still come out there and they could be clashes with the security forces this is a doom spiral and. Yes indeed I mean you know it it appears as if one complication keeps popping up after another and there have been even after the Supreme Court and knowledge be elections there were dozens of cases that went into the courts all sorts saying that this fresh elections could not go ahead or could go ahead for one reason or the other so there is the all the the constitutional and electoral law sort of confusion that's been going on there is that aspect but there's also the state of things on the ground the security aspect and whether people will be able to get on with their lives whether business will be able to continue because a lot has been held up and people are really just holed up at home and hoping for the best thanks so much to tell me the tell me about a poem or from him during transmissions today on the b.b.c. World Service about the story which is developing in some ways but actually has come to a bit of a grinding halt with the Supreme Court saying that it can't consider that petition . If you're looking for an unusual gift of someone perhaps with an added sparkle of celebrity the B.B.C.'s role turnedon in India has word of something for you. I come to a factory on the outskirts of culture in front of me some men and women are hard at work on their hand looms this looks like any textile factory that you find across Asia but here they make one of the world's most famous saris it's not worn by Bollywood actress it is all models all India's elite It was this sorry that was worn by Mother Teresa with me. As spokesperson for the Missionaries of Charity. White border and the border is 2 inches of me and then there are 2 other smaller straight about that gap of. Putting And. That's the family. Mother Teresa decided to have the saris made here because this is the letter colony it gave them word because many people in India would have nothing to do with let's go and talk to one of the workers Rani has been here for many years people tell you every minute Thank you thank you very much you are ahead of you then. I never. I mean if every. Book I know my thank you how much I mean we are all right. I've left the factory and I'm on a busy street in Kolkata but it may have died 20 years ago but she's still very much part of the fabric of this since she was made the same lots of tourists have come to Kolkata to see where she lived and work while that's good for the economy it has led to some concerns So welcome to visit you took our office advocate in IP attorneys how can I help you because at this office they're worried that some people might try and cash in on Mother Teresa's iconic symbols and so they've trademarked some of them like her sorry lawyer. Came up with the plan and the Government of India has recognised that but at another Charedi as an intellectual property for the government is Asian very important that it should be protected so that no other person is trying to take such a thing up veteran Fabio I'll give you more we'll be. Stretching all our production to the other. So there we can create a global protection. If you walk around the markets of Calcutta you don't see the fake Mother Theresa's saris for sale but what this trademark shows is that India is waking up to intellectual property at least defending its own right to send the right says expect to see Indians trademarking a lot more of their products pretty soon what has happened you know in cases like. This people have suddenly seen that what was intellectually Commons in India is trying to be made into intellectual property elsewhere in the world that somebody in the West might create a patent involving the healing properties of turmeric So I think people are walking up to the fact that your cultural heritage can easily be used up by someone else and turned into intellectual property that then you have to pay for in order to use it. Today on the streets of Calcutta people are talking about the Peyton to Mother Theresa's sorry next week it could be yoga India's message is clear Well keep your hands off our products. Tandon reporting from Karl Carter we're talking about cities like Calcutta and how they handle the transport to give us ideas from your town for example on the Dan De Mint journalist page says Orlando has the New Sun Rail one convenient stop is downtown Winter Park home of run ins college though it doesn't run on weekends but there are good rates for seniors so is there improved public transport and would you use it if you'd been so used to using the car if they gave you a transit system wouldn't be attractive. If you see them going on Twitter all the damn day when journalist page on Facebook. Coming up on our program a Republican senators used his retirement announcement to attack President Trump he says undignified behavior can be excused reckless outrageous and under 5 behavior has become excused and countenanced and telling it like it yes when it is actually just reckless outrageous and undignified for on that from Jeff Flake later and the discussion of what's happening inside the Republican Party high headlines just now the controversial rerun of the Kenyan presidential election looks likely to go ahead to has showed you all tomorrow Thursday after too few judges attended a Supreme Court hearing on whether to perspire in it supporters of the main opposition party have taken to the streets in protest and China's unveiled its new leadership team and in a break with the president there is no obvious successor to President Xi Jinping this is the b.b.c. . This is Dan De Mint in London on Thursday tomorrow a year of official mourning in Thailand will come in later in a specular cremation ceremony for the late King Bhumibol. Who died last year at the age of $88.00 he reigned for more than 70 years he persuaded over the transformation of his country from a poor rural economy to a fast growing manufacturing and tourism powerhouse cheering his long reign King Bhumibol enjoyed almost god like status because of his devotion to causes like agricultural development and the environment also though thanks to constant royalist propaganda and the restrictions imposed by the harsh Magister law he stayed in the minds of the people millions of ties feel genuine affection for the late King also mixed with fear of saying anything negative about the monarchy Our South-East Asia correspondent Jonathan Head spoke to an academic who's watched the ornate creation pavilions being built opposite her university. For the past year I've been helping out with various volunteer activities and even today I still get goose bumps you know from scene this tied up volunteer still you know coming in to be part of this you know experience even the satellite that we will never forget that everybody seems to want to share with it's time and has been quite divided in Prince Of course it is 18 months since he died this week an exhibition opens in London featuring some of his possessions including stage outfits the jeweled walking sticks with which he was often seen Michelle Hussein has been speaking to princes Nelson who's also a musician and who's in London to see the exhibition Michel which item does she think is quintessentially Prince. The shirt from the opening night at the old 2 in 2007 I think that's a unique item and then I've always loved the chain hat from my name is Prince with the chains on it when I saw that you know like I want one and then when I actually saw it and how heavy those chains were I said I don't want more and. How close were the 2 of you we were very close we were kind of inseparable from birth more my birth because I'm younger until he passed his full sister years yet about half siblings as well how much of the of the look was very much from him that he had created or did did he have people who. Fed into the image that he created he normally would tell them what he won it and then they bring it back and say Is this what you were looking for if it's not he'd go no cover this up do that put that in there so my mother was a close design missiles fact that we both design clothes obviously he went on to design clothes that people far he designs she Louise outfit and some of the band members outfits now I mean I can imagine this has been a very difficult 18 months for you and have been some significant family disagreements in that time as well will we see the release of the music that he recorded but which was not released in his lifetime Oh definitely Prince always wanted his music to be heard from around the world Him and Barry they always wanted their music out there I mean in print himself has even said you know maybe he won't release it but someone will. That's taken Nelson who is the sister of Prince and that exhibition is on London for a couple of weeks he was speaking to Michelle Hussein You're listening to weld update from the b.b.c. Coming up going to talk some more about transports about pollution he bikes not welcome in New York tomorrow it's an effort to change the transport in Lagos in Nigeria which is reputed to be one of the worst cities in the world to transport but they have lots of waterways why don't they use them that's for tomorrow. News with Debby rests lawyers for Kenya's election board say the rerun of the presidential election will go ahead and should jeweled on Thursday this is because too few judges were available for a Supreme Court hearing to consider a petition to delay the ballot one of them failed to attend after her bodyguard and her car were attacked by an armed man late on Tuesday a lawyer for the opposition said this was evidence of intimidation and crowds of opposition supporters in western Kenya who want the poll delayed have been angrily protesting in the streets. In a break with precedent China has unveiled a new leadership lineup that does not include an obvious successor to President Xi Jinping Mr she has been given 5 more years to lead the country but there's speculation he may be preparing to continue as president beyond that Turkey has put on trial 11 human rights activists it accuses of aiding terrorist groups Amnesty International whose local director is among the accused says the charges are politically motivated and Iraqi military spokesman says an army offensive in areas near Iraqi Kurdistan will continue despite an offer by the Kurdistan authorities to freeze the results of its independence referendum the Us secretary of state Rex Tillerson has said Pakistan stability and security are threatened by terror groups speaking in India he said he had conveyed the same message a day earlier when meeting Pakistan's leaders in Islamabad. News. Hello this is Dan Damon with world update from London coming up in just a while lot of there Turner who's been one of the leading voices for business over many decades is joining other business leaders saying capitalism isn't working a rising tide hasn't lifted all boats we'll hear from him and we'll talk about what to do about that a bit later here on World update 1st we go to China and then a break with President China's unveiled a new leadership lineup that does not include an obvious successor to President Xi Jinping at a ceremony in Beijing Mr Xi as expected was given 5 more years to lead China usually send him a punk. We have just held the 1st plenary session of the 19th c.p.c. Central committee and elected a new central leadership about why I was reelected as general secretary of the c.p.c. Central committee I see this is not just approval of my work but also encouragement that will spur me on. Let's talk to Tim Franks he's been in Beijing for the duration of the Congress to speak to you again we'll talk about the succession in a moment but the obvious point is if you look at these 7 men. Age from 60 to 67 and they are all men where the women. Were there are women who are members of the Chinese Communist Party delegates the more than 2000 troop into the great hall of the people for these congresses that happen every 5 years. I think it's about one in 4 delegates are women but they tend to be women who then don't make it through the rungs of progression onto the central committee and then on to the Politburo and then on to that top team that we saw unveiled today the Standing Committee of the Politburo and there just is no tradition in modern Chinese politics of women being represented and you have to say I think to generalize about a country of 1300000000 that although women have long been hailed I mean Chairman Mao referred to them as holding up half the sky Nonetheless when it comes to positions of power business and in politics they are often woefully under represented Well China's not the only place where that is the case let's talk about the age of these men the next generation isn't yet getting a look in where does the speculation come from that that means she Jinping might stay longer than 5 years well the reason for that is that had he appointed somebody in their fifty's then that person would be the obvious person to take over from him as president in 5 years time because he is only supposed to have 25 year terms under the rules that were drawn up by mounds of dong's successor done shopping but I. It's not quite as clear cut as that because even were there to be a successor brought in perhaps closer or veiled indeed in 5 years' time there is heavy speculation here that she Jim ping is not going to give up all the leavers of power that he might retain for example the position of chairman of the Chinese Communist Party and given the way in which he has welded ever closer the fate of the party and the organs of the state the government. That would still be an enormously powerful position the other thing that's happened as well without getting too arcane about it as I'm sure you reported this time yesterday is that he has now had his thoughts with a capital t. Enshrined in the Chinese constitution which puts him alongside Chairman Mao in terms of the pantheon of great Chinese communist leaders so you know this is a man who is keeping power very closely around him and what's being said there about the effect of this obvious strength actually jumping on issues like Hong Kong and its autonomy on Taiwan on the South China Sea. I think has made it very very clear that there will be no restiveness tolerated from beyond mainland China or indeed mainland China itself is a term that is rather frowned upon by the Chinese Communist Party because they rather like to see other bits of territory such as Taiwan just referred to as part of China itself so he is saying he's continuing to say One Country 2 Systems as far as Hong Kong is concerned he's not making outwardly bellicose noises about Taiwan but he is also making it very very clear that China is a strong power it's going to become a much more central power in the world it is an indispensable power and anybody who dares to challenge that will feel what it is what it means to be on the wrong side of China there is a very deep implicit threat to what he has to say. Tim thanks so much indeed that's 10 francs in Beijing more from him in the program coming later here on the b.b.c. World Service. Let's talk about another president this time in the United States Donald Trump getting quite a lot of flak from Jeff Flake a Republican senator who says he won't run for election next year because he can't be complicit with what he calls a reckless presidency Here's what he said reckless outrageous and undignified behavior has become excused and countenanced as telling it like it is when it is actually just reckless outrageous and undignified. He said he didn't enjoy criticizing the president but felt it was a matter of juicy inconscious another senator also one who standing down Bob Corker from Tennessee earlier described Donald Trump as an utterly untruthful leader these attacks from senators in his own party have highlighted the difficulties that Mr Trump faces in getting his own members in Congress to support his policy agenda one former Republican congressman in Illinois Joe Walsh says the public criticism is surprising this is certainly not normal to have 2 Republican senators last a Republican president like this but we don't live in normal political times in America right now and people who voted for Donald problem they didn't want a normal guy in the White House I don't think that or where they came from or girls recognize Sarah Huckabee Sanders says Donald Trump's folks woman she says people voted for a strong leader more popular she says with the voters than his critics Ok I think the voters of these individual senator states are speaking in pretty loud volumes I think that they are not likely to be reelected and I think that shows that the support is more behind this president than it is those 2 individuals Well we'll see how that develops will perhaps come back to that later in the week all this week we're talking about transport and pollution of us 2 1st stories about where you are Jamieson on it says Denver recently added commuter rail to the airport with additional routes still in testing and or construction and there are more comments to Courtney 8 says we're trying to make Indianapolis which is very much a cost centric city much more pedestrian and bike friendly and improving mass transit so how's that going Courtney let us know what about the evil eye we spoke about the pollution in London we spoke yesterday about Singapore's decision not to allow any. New vehicles to be registered to hang on to the transport to keep the pure there in North America a bike electrically assisted cycles are in use in New York City for example to Korea goods but the man doesn't like them he says that they are speeding I've been speaking to Morgan she is and he bikes campaign manager people for bikes they advise governments on cycling policy what does New York City have against Ebonics I asked him I think there are a lot of things that play in New York you have a number of different types of people you have people who drive their cars around town you have people who ride their existing traditional by schools around town and you have people who write electric bikes and none of those groups have the same interests and I feel like this is an issue where one interest group is clearly rising to the top and has the ear of the mayor and able to make change that way and it's a short sighted policy but he needs to listen to some of the other stakeholders that hand which is the group that most objects then to the bikes in my opinion it's people who live on the Upper West Side enough free side who have had to deal with a lot of changes in their life if you think about parking and getting around the city who don't like giving up parking lanes for bicycle lanes and don't like giving up their driving lanes for that when they see it's it's kind of an easy target to identify effects as the source of the problem actually describe any bike because they differ in different parts of the world don't they some are pretty much like normal bikes they may have a battery and a bit of assistance somewhere and a wheel others are. Like mini motorbikes Yep so Low Speed Electric Bicycle is a lot like a bike it just has a small motor and if you think about it the motor is as powerful or less powerful as a hairdryer so it's quite small and it has pedals it has all of the same equipment . That you would see on a traditional bicycle but with that really small bit of steam and if you're able to ride a pedal it's just an easy way you'll realize that it's much more like a bicycle than a motorcycle you have to be pedaling to engage the motor it's generally 2 or 3 miles an hour faster uphill flat surfaces and I've got most surfaces it's the same . Instances where the poor benighted to dozens of been done by desperate the bike riders know this is my full time job I track the news they track incident reports and there are really no shown instances of crashes or compromises in human safety and public safety because of effects so when the mayor of New York mentioned speed and safety concerns honestly those are quite I'm talented and it's unfortunate that effects are lumped in with higher speed devices and vehicles but really they're just basically us with a small motor that are able to follow the same rules and regulations as regular brakes and haven't caused any any crashes which town or city is the best for the bikes in the us. Which cities are best. I would say probably San Francisco California was the 1st state in the country to pass for aggressive Evoque law that classified close to the base as bicycles so not only is it a friendly and legislative environment the infrastructure in San Francisco's pretty incredible for it and I would say Denver is probably a close 2nd. So what are you trying to do to change to Blasio is mind. So the problem with his position is that he's lumping throttle actuated he thinks with pedal assisted effects So in other words he's lumping the bikes that you have to pedal to engage the voter with you because I have a throttle and I don't require you to pedal and there's a clear distinction in your ministry of code between those 2 plates and so what we're trying to do is raise awareness with his staff that paralyse brakes are so similar to regular. I suppose that they should not be lumped in with throttle assisted effects which technically are our motorized scooters under the city's code so what we want to do is make sure that there is a safe place for effects within the code of specially low speed effects and that he recognizes that class 12 and 3 electric bicycles in the city code instead of lumping them all as these dangerous dangerous machines who are Ebonics good for. Good for everyone I am a relatively younger person with 2 small children and I take them to daycare every single day and I ride my even take out commute to work my father is 70 years old he just bought one because because of a back issue he was no longer able to ride a regular bike you see people replacing their vehicles with the brakes and certainly not replacing plates at all so I would say anyone who wants to get it to work on their 5 to 20 mile commute outside of a car anyone who can no longer ride a bicycle because physical disability or something that just prevents them from pushing pedals in general the industry is growing 80 percent year over year the most exciting thing about them is people who write even makes a lot of them haven't ridden a bike since they got their driver's license and they just are rediscovering that their love of basic rules because of this space for what the small motor that's Morgan The Melanie bikes campaign a comment on that said at 10 pm and journalists on Facebook b.b.c. Dan Damon on Twitter. United Nations Secretary General Antonio is in the Central African Republic the rebel war started 4 years ago there are 12000 u.n. Peacekeepers there Recent reports suggest things are getting worse more than half the population now dependent on humanitarian aid I looked about Smith has been hearing from people in the capital Bangui about what they think of the UN's effort . This city feels like it's suffering from traumatic stress roadside disputes regularly escalate charitable proportions here in the p.k. 5 neighborhood rumors sparking these Ching's it's easy to find people with a message for Antonio terrorists base even if you really. Want to tell the secretary general that he must rehabilitate our own army and paramilitary so they should be given the means to defend themselves the Central African Republic deserves Central African secure themselves there are already many peacekeepers in the country yet every day the rebels are killing people they have a bill and punditry to lose really. Good I mean these guys but there must be for example if you the un is just not enough and I pray that the government the international community decide to strengthen our army and send them out on the ground we need the Central African army to support the un so that peace returns. I don't patrol with the Rwandan army walking in a single file along the boulevard in Bondi where there are a few slightly hostile comments on men in a barber shop another one buying phone credit on the other hand the woman said jumble which is hello in Swahili to the wind in peacekeepers there's ongoing criticism of ministers but in a country which is known years of conflict and which doesn't have an army of its own worthy of the name Bungie is secure and is being kept secure prime minister if you give me a double of what I have it won't bring the peace year because I cannot kill all these guys the u.n. Force commander is Senegalese left tenant general Barack. He believes the key to peace is firm in a sketch to take control of the country's gold and diamond mining areas we have to make sure that we stop the killings the un is not bringing force to solve the issue is should be a genuine in gauge one of the stakeholders all the population told police there is increasing evidence that the fighting in the Central African Republic is being directed chiefly by people who want to control its resources but they are not on the un secretary general's list of people to see in the next 3 days that's Alex to Al Smith in the Central African Republic the news from Kenya that the presidential election looks set to go ahead and show you all tomorrow there was a petition in the Supreme Court to stop it but too few judges attended the opposition party says that will not be good enough and they've taken to the streets more on that coming later here on the b.b.c. World Service. But if you've been listening to what update over the past year or so did any news source you would have come across data that shows the global economy is not working for all inequality is a problem globalization and free trade have been in the firing line with many saying the most vulnerable in society haven't felt the benefits. Turner has been speaking to the b.b.c. He was the former chairman of the Financial Services Authority in the u.k. Also represented business interests and he says capitalism has failed. Capitalism is not delivering its promise the broad promise has been that if you extend over say a 10 year period you can be pretty confident that a rising tide raises all boats and everybody feel somewhat better often and that's gone wrong a lot of their turn to get some ideas on what might be done then I spoke to Vicky Pryce chief economic advisor to the Center for Economics and Business Research Well the truth is that over a number of decades now capitalism and globalization has brought loads and loads of people out of poverty has expanded the size of middle classes in China in India and elsewhere So overall you could argue that it is a success the problem with the developed economies is that of course they were recently mature or ready and there is a limit of course to what type of growth we can have in the future what do require is clever investor strategies that think about the new technologies or in carriage is consistent best more in various areas including skills and also have the right taxes and regulations that ensure that you redistribute Let's talk about the automation and the effect of that on productivity not a dead Turner says that what's happened is a lot more automation there are still lots of people in jobs that perhaps don't need to be done let's hear what he said about that. You know areas of manufacturing much of retailing or logistics we are increasingly creating warehouses that have only robots in them are hardly any people but what is happening at the moment is that when people are then displaced by that the jobs they're moving into are low paid low productivity. What's your comment that this has been happening of course for a long period of time and people who've lost for the moment are the ones with the middle skills what we found is that the high skilled people of knowledge workers if you like them well in terms of job creation the low skilled ones as well where the problems have been has been in the middle skilled people and that's where a lot of the emphasis now needs to go in terms of hunting this kills finding new ways in which they can be productive in the economy the truth is that if you take those people out and you make them deliver cyclists then obviously that activity goes down and recession has helped the financial crisis hasn't helped obviously we recovered from it up to a point but what actually happened is are many people have now gone to do part time jobs which are of less value for likenesses of their lowest levels than they were before self-employed people have seen huge declines in the real incomes since the recession certainly in the u.k. But it's happened elsewhere too so that's the area where we need to be focusing an awful lot more isn't surprising of course that as a result of activity has suffered it's not inevitable again that it should stay where it is I think we've invested a little as a nation loads of other countries are in the same position I'm afraid this capital investment has been quite low back about isn't what it used to be before what you need is a real rethink both in terms of public and private capital formation and the 2 in fact interlinked and that's where the focus should be. You seem to be relatively optimistic that there is an awareness that these are problems and there are organizations governments trying to take care of them p. Still feel disgruntled don't they we can see that in the rise of populism in many different parts of the world that they have rejected the solutions offered by the existing elites so you're not worried by that but of course 11 worries about how one finds things to blame for domestic inadequacies if you like it is absolutely true that globalization is taking away from some jobs and the markets are not particularly efficient and that perhaps too much has gone to profits rather than being distributed to the workers those are issues that individual nations can handle the South yes there are problems of the multinational they need a bit more cooperation of course you need cooperation to in terms of the rule of law across lots of countries and that's absolutely true but it is really domestic policy is the need to address that and they haven't done so if we now move to protectionism all making firms from outside not look at the u.k. As favorably as they did before and don't invest here we probably SCIRI duction in about activity their calculations are that because of foreign direct investment activity is being pursued higher than it otherwise would be and has been very good but I certainly would have been considerably lower if we didn't have that type of investment so you can make all sorts of mistakes and what I worry about more than anything else is this creeping protectionism and nationalism which actually isn't going to solve anything it will make things worse picking a price the discussion to go on the g.d.p. Growth by the way in the u.k. Not point 4 percent in the 3rd quarter of this year better than expected but a lot less than last year let's go to the Netherlands a state of the art laboratory to help find missing people is giving new hope Here's Anna Holligan in The Hague. How can we track down the remains of loved ones lost at war or in an environmental disaster. Any ship could hold the answer. Just pull back a little. Processor we're doing Renault's isolating d.n.a. From the bone samples of the missing is wearing a face mask and gloves to avoid contaminating the d.n.a. Sample as we render down the bone powder and isolate whatever d.n.a. Is available in that sample. Insights and I ran you lab yeah I'm Dr Thomas Parsons I'm the director of science and technology at the International Commission on missing persons and much of our work takes place with regard to mass graves and crimes against humanity that type of thing where the d.n.a. Is very highly decomposed we need specialized techniques to get tiny traces of d.n.a. From that and to amplify it up so then it can be compared to relatives of the missing in order to reunite the their own missing person with their families now the technology that's been used for that is the standard for d.n.a. Fingerprinting if you will it what you would might see about on a crime show or what have you we're now introducing something called massively parallel sequencing or next generation sequencing it is able to process powers ins and actually millions of individual reactions simultaneously so the output of genetic information is much much higher so that the relatives can be more distant That's right this technique next generation sequencing is expected to result in an exponential increase in the power of d.n.a. Identification the International Commission on missing persons investigates international cases from war zones to natural disasters to more recently those lost in the migration crisis. The Mediterranean is turning into a mass grave site Italy has now retreated. Almost 8000 bodies passion is there as director with this new technology for example we would be able to assist Italy in extracting d.n.a. From mortal remains and we would be able to tell which part of the world we would need to go to to find the surviving relatives to collect genetic samples from them to make a d.n.a. Match so this really does change the world an estimated 60000 people have disappeared in Syria My name is one other person I came from story Mohammad was detained and tortured his cellmate are still missing I wasn't able to retrieve them after I was released and most reliably they have never been released does this give you more hope that they are might be found we have to hold hold it's our only it's only weapon know. What every 8.9 on the Richter scale the biggest in the world for 40 years more than a quarter of a 1000000 people were killed in the 2004 Asian tsunami waves up to 10 meters high Gulf the coasts of many countries Ingrid lost 2 of the most precious people in her life my daughter Linda and my granddaughter. Was there. What does her mother do when. Her family is disappeared on the other side of the UK If you or don't know where they are you still have the whole and the whole rolling in your head I think for ever their remains were eventually identified through d.n.a. Samples Yes in some way. I felt before that because they are no all together. And a hologram reporting and that brings us to the end of this world update please join us from Baltimore.
