Action by a comfortable majority with all but a handful of seats now declared Barra's Johnson's party is heading for a parliamentary majority of more than 70 the Prime Minister Barak Johnson said he had won a powerful new mandate to get a break sit down I want to thank the people of this country for turning out to vote in a December election that we didn't want to call it which I think has turned out to be a story election. Gives us know in this new government a chance to respect the democratic will of the British people to change this country for the better and to unleash the potential of the entire people of this country Mr Johnson's projected majority gives him margin to take Britain out of the European Union next month the opposition Labor Party has lost sways of its to dish a new heartland and it's suffered its worst performance since before the 2nd World War but the party leader Jeremy Corbyn is made it clear he's not standing down straight away although he said he would not to lead Labor into a future general election he breaks it for his party's poor showing Bracks it has so polarized and divided divide in this country it is overridden so much of a normal political debate and I recognise that has contributed to the results that the Labor Party has received this evening all across this country with a vast majority of the results now in our political correspondent the B.B.C.'s Rob Watson has this assessment on course for an historic victory Boris Johnson has already repeated his main campaign promise to leave the e.u. Before the end of January although his likely large majority makes that a near certainty what comes next negotiating the U.K.'s future relationship with Brussels and all by the end of 2020 won't be so easy he will also have to deal with challenges such as the potential demand for another referendum in Scotland and while Mr Johnson is undoubtedly the comfortable winner of this election he remains a profoundly divisive and polarizing figure Robertson reporting Meanwhile in Scotland the pro independent Scottish National Party has made significant gains and is on course to win at least 50 of the country's $59.00 seats in the Westminster Parliament. The party's leader Nicolas Sturgeon said the vote represented a renewed mandate for another independence referendum in a surprise result the leader of Britain's 4th biggest party Jo Swinson of the Liberal Democrats narry lost her own Scottish seat the Liberal Democrat stood on a platform or revoking breaks it which appears to have backfired world needs from the b.b.c. . Free to make the European Union carbon neutral by 2050 but not all countries have signed up Poland which is heavily reliant on coal remains opposed and has been exempted for the moment the new European Council president Sharma shell admitted that it was more difficult for some countries and regions to adapt from London that's the latest b.b.c. Nice. This is London at 6 o'clock this is news day and my goodness we got a story for you the message was get breaks it done and it looks like the British people liked that message Boris Johnson and his Conservative Party have won a big majority of his decision to hold a snap general election in the u.k. In the winter in the snow the rain in the cold paid off the conservatives of one seat after seat in the past few hours particularly in the heartland of the opposition Labor Party after the prime minister's Brix its slogan hit home with people who had voted to leave the e.u. Now the 1st sign of the scale of the victory came when the Conservatives took Bly Valley in the north east of England from labor which had held that seat since 1950 and levy the concept of party candidate 17. Was speaking after winning his seat the prime minister Paris Johnson said the public had sent his government a clear message I want to thank the people of this country for turning out to vote in a December election that we didn't want to call it which I think has turned out to be story election gives us now in this new government the chance to respect the democratic will of the British people to change this country for the better and to unleash the potential of the entire people of this country well the leader of the opposition Labor Party Jeremy called in admitted that the result wasn't good and said that he won't be fighting the next general election this is obviously a very disappointing night for the Labor Party with the result that we've got but I want to say this in the election campaign. We put forward. A manifesto of hope a manifesto of unity and a manifesto. That would help to right the wrongs and the injustices and inequalities that exist in this country. Well in a surprise raid on the leader of Britain's 4th biggest party Jones Swinson of the Liberal Democrats narrowly lost her own seat voters in Scotland have given a boost to the Scottish National Party which campaigned for a 2nd independence referendum the s.n.p. Have come close to sweeping the board gaining seats from all of their rivals Let's take a step back for a 2nd exhale and talk to b.b.c. World Service u.k. Political correspondent Robert Watson. Surprise surprise results I think many are saying this morning Rob the size of the conservative victory in the usual Labor heartlands it is surprising yes but I think it was within the margin of error so a couple of things to say I mean I think the 1st thing is to set the scene that after I think what was an utterly underwhelming campaign largely on of and fall indeed sort of Farley T.D.'s having been billed as one of the most important election since 1945 you do you get this astonishing result of historic result no doubt about it which is remaking the political map of Britain before it gets that why did it happen very briefly I think it's because of Bracks at the leave votes was more united behind the Conservative Party the remain where it was was more divided and because of the push factor of Jeremy Corbin for both remain as leaders alike they just do not like Jeremy Korb and why do I say it so why it's so important why is it historic number one because it means Britain is definitely going to leave the e.u. At the end of January as Mr Johnson promised now that he has a majority I think 2nd it's an election that has left the opposition party as the main opposition party is in disarray and effectively leaderless and I think there's this challenge of the u.k. Potentially breaking up because you've seen the Scottish National Party doing very well so to some. It all up I mean obviously Mr Johnson is the out right when are but it's not plain sailing I mean blacks have as an enormous challenge here still are a profoundly polarizing and divisive figure and you know there's the issue of Scotland Let's talk about the issue of Scotland and here from the leader of the Scottish National Party he said the results may give the British government the mandate to leave if the European Union but it also gives her party this is Nicholas surgeon a mandate to vote on leaving the union that independence referendum that was very much at the heart of the same case campaign that is renewed recession strengthened Monday for that and just as I reluctantly accept because it's a direction I did great Johnson has a mandate no to take the view that he must accept that I have a mandate to offer Scotland the choice of an alternative future so as you say she has a mandate but she still needs to ask permission of Westminster of a lot you know the government operating out of London to have another set have another referendum and they still have to say yes yes and she would still need to win the argument with the Scottish people but that works both ways I mean it's all very well for the Conservative Party to say look we're not going to have a referendum people don't want to that's ridiculous Scotland voted I mean clearly it's going to have to be one of Mr Johnson's job on those in the Conservative Party to persuade Scottish people to that will be in their interest to stay in the union so it's look it's going to be undoubtedly a challenge post for Mr sturgeon to try and get a referendum and to win it and of course for that Mr Johnston the conservatives to persuade them actually you don't really want a referendum and it would be rubbish even if you had want to be independent Rob is going to be saying with throughout the program if an hour of what's a political u.k. Political correspondent thank you 12 minutes past the hour hello we're going to be hearing in the next few hours from all sides of the debate here in the u.k. And the e.u. And America as well talking about trade but why don't we begin with a big. Nigel Evans conservative m.p. Longtime critic of the European Union supported BRICs it in the 2016 e.u. Referendum I suppose you're a True Believer Nigel is not the best way to describe you so what do you feel this morning. I'm elated and I am reassured that the British people given the opportunity in a general election decided to vote for a party that said that they would get Bragg's it done and your political correspondent is absolutely right we shouldn't really miss the focus on this we will be leaving the European Union next month right we just heard Nicholas saying Boris Johnson has a mandate to take England out of the e.u. Very carefully chosen words because she thinks your party has no mandate to take Scotland out of the e.u. . As a unionist Well yes I am worried because Nicholas sturgeon must remember she had her own referendum in 2014 and the people of Scotland decided they wish to remain members of the United Kingdom and this was the United Kingdom general election and Boris Johnson is just one we've got currently a majority of $66.00 and suspect that will go up because there's still a few more results to come in and I was listening very carefully throughout the day to Jim Murphy the former leader of the party in Scotland he said because I haven't campaigned in Scotland during this election but he said that he knew that the Scottish National Party were campaigning very hard on stopping brag sets and it was only once the election the polls close to 10 o'clock that they switched back to say this now gives us the opportunity to have an indoor spent of our position on independence really doesn't and that's not what they fought on it was to stop. As robots and how are no doubt see I learn your last minister in the next 10 or next couple of days what he does I just want to I just want to ask you what you consider to be the biggest challenge now. However the negotiation that lies ahead with the European Union or or persuading Scotland not to leave the United Kingdom. Well I think that we've got to do both and I think the important thing for Boris Johnson is getting this huge majority that he's got tonight and of course it's a bit bigger than just the 66 robbers you know because there were a number of candidates who were standing as independents David cork Dominic Grieve and others and a super few did not win their seats and of course they were an absolute thorn in the side of forest Johnson for the last 2 years since the last general election so this majority is actually absolutely clear and I believe that it gives him great strength and leverage as he has the negotiations post the 31st of January in order to have the trade deal with the European Union and of course a number of other countries so I think that. Brussels were able to capitalize on the fact that there was so much indecision so much paralysis within parliament we had members of the Conservative Party actually going over to Brussels talking to me shelled Barney and giving them ammunition against their own prime minister which of course was quite ridiculous all of that will now stop there's only one person who now speaks for the British government and British parliament and that's Boris Johnson and no matter how strong his position lots of people who know much more about this than I do don't think he can do a trade deal in 11 months you sure that he can yes I am and they said that he couldn't reopen the. Negotiations with the European Union and get rid of the backstop he did all of that so we got to withdraw agreement as he said I've been ready ready to pop it not exactly a triumph though was initially it causes many problems as as as it's resolved no I know the fact is that the campaign message was let's get Bragg's it. And we now will be able to get breaks it done by the end but that's exactly why I'm asking largely because it's a slogan it was great it worked at selling soap powder but it's not 11 months of negotiation you have to you have to say that that is a lot more complicated than another 3 words leave a slogan No no no we we've got the withdrawal agreement so we leave at the end of January that's up and then the trading end and then there are a growing that's right then Rob we go into the trade deal with the European Union and we are currently aligned as Boris Johnson has said time and time again during that general election so it's not as if we're starting like Canada from a very completely different position and it takes years to do that so the negotiation if there is political will within the European Union and there certainly will be within the United Kingdom that is no reason at all why we should be able to get that trade deal done by the end of next year Ok Many many thanks indeed for joining us congratulations once again newly elected really reelected I should say conservative m.p. For the Ribble Valley in the north of England that was Nigel Evans a conservative true believer I think it's fair to say voted breaks it in 26 e.u. Referendum quite delighted this morning the latest He said news day from the b.b.c. World Service coming to you live from London today it's known as Pollard and climate Donald bringing you all their reaction in the results coming in from the u.k. Election the Conservative Party have won a comfortable majority I'm reading a headline of my screen now it says the pound sause as Tories win majority in an election that's close to the British Chambers of Commerce and business correspondent with us around the program souping Chan morning he sees it seems more near their markets are happy with this result. Very happy as you mentioned the pound has soared is up almost 18 month high against the dollar and a 3 and a half year high against Syria so a lot of people waking up this morning police thinking about their holiday money plans but let's talk about business and what business wants I'm here with 6 She's executive director at the British Chambers of Commerce Boris Johnson clearly he's got a clear mandate to govern how does this government signal that Britain is open for business when Boris Johnson became prime minister back in the summer he promised business an economic package that would help to base business confidence and get the economy back on track the manifest was quite light on details of how that's going to be achieved so now he needs to get down to business and provide some detail around what this government is going to do around investment in infrastructure getting our school system back on track making sure we have the right people to ensure our businesses grow and of course the back situation people is obvious obviously a big issue in the Conservative government has promised to control immigration going forward that's a good idea when we know that businesses up and down the country in United Kingdom are struggling to fill vacancies some taking you know many businesses taking months to find the right people that they need to grow and develop their business so we need an immigration system that really works for businesses throughout the United Kingdom where we can access skills at all levels so it's really important but we also need to invite people from around the world to come help us to develop and grow our businesses and we can't get away from the b word brags that we heard Nigel Evans there saying that there is you know it will be possible to do a trade deal within 11 months if the government wants an extension they need to do so this summer do you think the government should do that. I think it's highly ambitious to think that we can have a comprehensive trade agreement with our nearest biggest trading partner in such a short period of time particularly when you factor in the ratification process that would take to get to that point so we might see ourselves. Can you quite say that that price if you can take a long time they should be open to the fact that my need to be extended period had an ethics executive director at the b.c.c. Thank you very much I'll give bring you more from the city later on this big bang thank you for the update a crucial part of the story let's just take a breath we have reminded you of the remarkable story let's remind you some sports headlines as well Matthew Kenyon winners and losers in the football is morning let's hear Ambrosio munching Tabak the highest profile teams to drop out of the Europa League after the final round of group games last night club who are the punters legally does in Germany of course conceded the crucial goal to lose to want to Istanbul. In the 91st minute of their game and last year 3rd in Syria lost to nil to ren and are also out satisfy night though for Manchester United boss Oleg on a social as his young side sealed top spot in their pool for goals in 11 minutes as they be had out Mark 3rd win in a row for United now as well astral showed a bit of fight coming back from to no down against standard to me I used to leaven it they top their pool as well all the English teams and all the Spanish teams make it into Monday's draw and it's deadline day for bids to be submitted to Fifa to host the Women's World Cup in 2023 Australia New Zealand have launched a joint bid which they say is the 1st cross Confederation bid for a global football tournament of any kind to many thanks indeed Matthew Kenyon delighted you here in the studio if you want to hear more from Matthew and yes less election as more from him in 20 minutes. Well astounded that you do you only once a hail mary see of it let's elect Welcome back Professor nice to see you as Professor John Curtis professor of politics this truckload University Hello welcome you've been up all night we have a very Clarion say that did anybody see this coming the size of this majority for the Conservative Party Oh sure I mean the opinion polls frankly throughout the campaign were typically showing double digit leads for the Conservatives a couple of the polls the did the lead in the final polls that the concerns were. 12 points had to cover most of the going to be 11 points ahead and in the event the conservatives other conservatives are 12 points ahead what is true is almost inevitably be did spend a great deal of time saying well the conserve is all at that point but of course if their labor just a step a bit then maybe they won't get the reverend majority but the truth is the polls always consistently It was suggesting that Boris Johnson was going to get probably a quite come from majority and that's exactly what he's monies to achieve there really should be a great deal of surprise this morning that indeed the Prime Minister's got the majority of us thinking in calling the selection I want to be read into the fact that Labor seats in the north of England traditionally held full decades you have going to have it to the Confederates while this is part of a process that was already in evidence in the previous election in 2017 in some cases going back further than that but in the 20 some of the places the last They've never previously lost before places like Washington in Cumbria with a bishop or Clint and Wrexham in the north of Wales these are all places that voted heavily for leave in the e.u. Referendum and the success of the conservative party in this election was founded on continuing further over what had happened in 20 something which is to get the Levite behind the conservative party and give you a striking contrast buck in 2015 the election that David Cameron won only 45 percent of those people who went on to vote leave the following You have a Viking for a conservative the but behind Mr Johnson's success this time around was 70 percent of leave voters voting for the Conservatives and this that is just reflected in the electorate Joe graphy So places that voted heavily to leave Seoul the night before more heavily than in those that invited 4 remain and indeed those places that voted really quite clearly for remaining 2016 actually the Tories fell this time. Whereas the party made most progress in the most part so this this is the way in which bricks it has shaped and reshaped the count to have support for our 2 largest parties changing their actual geography in such a way that the conservatives were the ones of us who have played the new post bricks it gave it up to politics more effectively than live with the Labor Party just not listening and this kind of this triangulation that happened quite late in the campaign by which I mean they said well vote for us and we will not only go back to Europe we'll get you another deal and then you can I'm told that oh you can vote to stay but I people just had enough of it Labor's essential problem is that it's triangulation was designed to keep our history made and leave voters together it didn't enable it to keep to keep its leverage is to gather its vote was you know and the end was well down on what it was amongst leverages in 2070 but at the same time it wasn't sufficient to a trot remain voters and although there were Democrats in the end from that by what by their expectations did disappointingly badly with only 12 percent of the vote nearly all the thought 12 percent of the vote is remain votes says and at the end of the day that helped to ensure that the remained vote was split between them and the Labor Party whereas the Levite was much more concentrated so they had labor weren't able to repass sufficiently the domination of their Would across we're doing to them on the remains side under the same time that triangulation was insufficient to persuade leave voters to stick with them as opposed to move towards the conservatives the message being the next time get off the fence yes indeed the truth that the dump its threat was not only a it is such a divisive issue that frankly the fence was the wrong place to be for any of the political problems I'm super curious John. Whether a Soyuz rebels or the other side I'm See I'm super curious whether whether I mean nothing as of a permanence in politics but the sort of realignment that's where you know what's happened so the labor vote people who. You know people in constituency as well for decades they voted Labor is it I mean this are some minutes to it you think well this is being one of the 6 of 1000 dollars questions about the implications of Brecht's it as to whether or not this is reshaping it permanently or was tell me I think the answer to that is almost going to depend Well it would depend on the future of Brett said I mean you know if the prime minister is right by this time next year it's all going to be eventually done and dusted and we're going to move on. But if one takes a different view which is that actually even if he succeeds in that objective we're still going to be arguing about whether he should be in Iraq today because bear in mind actually slightly more people in this election voted for parties that are in favor of holding another referendum than actually voted for the concerns the brokenhearted we'll get no obvious that this debate is going to be going to have to leave the press that John Curtis was struck by the University thank you many thanks indeed with some stats giving you why this is such a remarkable story here in Britain what about Europe invested in this business in a rather different way but invested bricks it has been a headache a car crash an embarrassment What's the reaction around Europe let's speak to done to who is a Polish member of the European Parliament a former e.u. Commissioner would suggest that maybe relief that there is a clear answer but can you sum up how you feel in response to this result when I think we made it now we have it clear from that from the site that depletes have to take it that they don't want to be a member of this clap that sees benefits in chasing the together so we take it we don't get it as they have been saying that's interesting this sounds like you regard it it sounds like you regard it as the end of the process this was the 2nd referendum not a name obviously but you know you now regard it as done yes we see it does that even though we still see the possibility of having get crushed. Depending where there are we would need the extension technicalities for that it should or not and then another crash out if we don't manage to do it during the transition we have $200.00 times from the posts on some of your prime minister that there be no extension so there is. There's this is the risk in 11 months that a lot of people here in the studio have been talking about in the past few hours do you share those concerns do you trust or do you trust Mr Johnson when he says it can be done in 11 months No I it's not 11 months 1st of all it's interesting they took those sites and start negotiations I think it's 10 months or every 6 which. It's not only and she to so that's even less true but it is by summer Joan decision must be made whether we go for extension. And not wait was this decision that's just a matter of a few months ahead was a big decision to make by summer we would have to know whether there's a new doc extension and whether there is a nest to ask right and do you trust Mr Johnson. Well it's just not my problem it's just for citizens to trust a minister or not. We will do our best to help as much as you can but we are I am very critical about. Relationships look at you it is it is much more complicated than that with an e.u. View many thanks indeed for speaking to Newsday this is the b.b.c. The leader of the Liberal Democrats has lost her seat overwhelming triumph for the Scottish nationalists north of the border. B.b.c. News with Gareth Barlow the governing conservatives in Britain have been confirmed as the winners of the general election by a comfortable majority the opposition Labor Party has lost sways of its to dish no heartland and has suffered its worst performance since before the 2nd World War The prime minister Boris Johnson said he had won a powerful new mandate to get bricks it done and unite the country the conservative m.p. And former prime minister to resign May said many voters did not trust Labor to deliver breaks it people were things with a very clear choice about whether or not they wanted to ensure the Bracks it was delivered and they me is that if the conservative majority government got in we would deliver Grex it that was a very clear choice for a lot of people this election was about ensuring that we could get over this deadlock in Parliament and could actually get Breck's it done and move on the Us President Donald Trump has tweeted he congratulated Boris Johnson on his victory he said Britain and the United States would now be free to strike what he called a massive new trade deal after breaks it in other world news the New Zealand military have airlifted 6 bodies from White Island after Monday's volcanic eruption there the police commissioner Mike Bush said the operation went to plan but it's not over yet to dive teams will be deployed on Saturday to search for a body believed to be in the waters off the volcanic island stock markets around lead on reports that President Trump has approved a trade deal in principle with China Wall Street saw to a record high and Asian markets are followed but there's been no official statement from Washington or Beijing the Chilean government has said it would be practically impossible for anyone to have survived a military plane crash off Antarctica on Monday 38 people were on board the Hercules cargo plane which was on route to a base in Antarctica the wreckage was located by search plane some 500 kilometers from the Chilean coast b.b.c. Nice. And many thanks indeed for the news hope this is news day with Lawrence and Clare and Rob Watson who always joins us in the studio at moments of national emergency this morning we're talking about an historic u.k. General election that's been happening in the past few hours just to recap quickly before we talk to one of the protagonists the Conservative Party and the prime minister Boris Johnson have won an overall majority which was confirmed about an hour and a half ago and they've taken a string of stronghold seats from the opposition Labor Party their leader has described it as a disappointing night said he won't lead Labor into the next election nor will Joe Swinson the leader of the Liberal Democrats because she actually lost her seat labor of lost seats across the north the Midlands in Wales basically as we were hearing from John Curtis political scientist just before the news maps on this quite largely is where the vote was leave all remain in the referendum one important thing that we're going to be talking about as well is a situation north of the border where Nicholas Sturgeon's Scottish Nationalist Party have done extremely well back to Boris Johnson he says the result is a powerful mandate to get done well let's get reaction now from Labor Party chairman Ian Lavery his narrow kept his parliamentary seat in one's back in the north east of England welcome to fill a very good morning. How do you read it then what went wrong well I think what's went wrong is quite obvious when you look at the results and where we've failed bodily there's in the believe seats in it stems quite simply from the the bricks at issue and we found that on the doorstep we phoned people are really not happy with the the perception that the Labor Party is to remain party we've. Many discussion on many DAWs right across from the East Midlands to the West Midlands to the Yorkshire normal the north west to the north east and people simply believe that because the euro. Arindam took clears in 2016 because it was something in point 4000000 people supported leave in the e.u. When it's no story and a half years live that we should have left I'm not blaming the conservatives for the lack of skills in terms of negotiating something and over that period the simply sin that as liberal voters the believed and trusted to live a party when the a c. In the 2017 manifest or not we would recognize the result of the referee and you say you'd say it's all down to that and nothing whatsoever to do with your party's leader Jeremy Coleman because Yvette Cooper a leading voice in the Labor Party has said you know out on the doorsteps see retained her seat in West Yorkshire where the reduced at majority he says it's a grim result Brix it was a key issue but perceptions of the leadership say this is what people were telling her on the doorstep and the fact that Jeremy Colbert is not going to lead your party into another election which would point to that one test Well again I'll tell you if I'm you know not only door was right across the region is just mentioned of doing you know in excess of 50 called state issues in the last 5 weeks fund like any election and I'll be an election and you know electioneering of being come paean and not be all for the party since I was a little boy for generations now. There's always an issue with who the leader might be who the leader should be and this is it hasn't been any different this time that the the result of the. We've seen tonight if you have a look at what the Labor Party had to walk for in 2017 we Jeremy Corbin is the leader we had a radical manifesto that was widely embraced but we see it we would support the result of the referendum what's different in 2019 we've got generally called in as a leader we've got a radical manifesto but we've skid minute. Ourselves to a 2nd referendum people say I was to say that well completely deluded to say it's all down to our stance on brac set and not down to the far left sift and his perception among slave about his Jeremy Colvin people within your own party are angry and also angry I wonder you just let me let me say this that you know in his speech in his acceptance speech he wasn't apologizing sit to other Labor Members of Parliament who have lost their seats he didn't extend really any kind of apology to you I really got it wrong honestly you really want Jeremy Corbin to appear on really your shows like this and to just constantly see you apologize for everything every every will in the womb Yeah you know what I said that maybe maybe I'll go you really are you know you don't really I didn't did you really need to get to about the reality is with Jeremy Corbin is sought him on who was being elected by more than a quarter of a 1000000 people out of the 500000 members we've got twice no is the leader of the Labor Party and Jeremy call been put forward a radical manifesto which is probably the best document the Labor Party's of a pool has the right leadership Hollandse but not for the country and doesn't that you know how can you look at that result and say to talk to the leader wrong do you think everybody should select the leader of the live a party or do you think it should be the members who select the Labor Party you're talking about Howard's and she thought no you want to get into power that's the who'll object if you have to do that with the right person for the electorate here and the right person clearly we have the result Well again I disagree with what we've what we've got is we've got a fantastic manifesto we have and radical manifesto in 2017 we just missed we did get beat of course we did General me was leader then we had this radical manifesto and this well yes that is it is with Jeremy Corbyn as leader of the or only difference was. 2017 we see it we would respect the result of the referendum this type of see it we would have a 2nd referendum and people distrust the fucked not to believe the that the Labor Party is busy being to remain part of the believe that the Liberal Party over the past year assume perhaps too we as have because it lean not back the the yes you would in the Commons It's a bold trust and I think a lot of people going forward because this now many people will say this kind of man states that Mr Johnson has now fabrics it means that he can do exactly what he promised he would do in the election he can gets breaks it done so the issue now for that for the Labor Party so any is he needs if this version of the Labor Party isn't working for the electorate at large solely a need to change things I think it's not this is a unique election this is a breakfast at election this is a real rule of 2016 and that's what this is and on the doorstep listen to people right across the. Political spectrum people in different communities really liked the manifesto pledges that we had the policies which we've been known as The really like them I mean 70 percent of the population believe that the nationalized issue no real mail and water was was absolutely phenomenal and a lot of the policies such as a real live in weird searches Building Council houses was widely received fantastically will received within the communities right across the political spectrum so we've got the manifesto of Planter's I'm telling the in my view we assemble people if you have a verdict and it was 78400000 people voted in 2016 on this referendum the really are angry the fact that we're not out of the you know and then lot of the movement of goods to the Tories because. Ridge junction it's nearly means to leave but I do tell you that transport Boris Johnson isn't very high either well that's another story and we'll see how the next few years pan out in every we thank you for your time the Labor Party chairman in Lavery let's reflect on some of that with Rob Watson who is here our political correspondent interesting phrase from Lavery there they have lent their votes to the Tories that's something that John Curtis was talking about as well are political scientist is this a permanent change or is just a bricks a change of voting now I think the answer is we don't know whether versus a major realignment I mean it's perfectly possible that in a way this might be one of the most temporary coalitions of votes as anyone has ever got from Mr Johnson In other words those people who voted for him because they want to leave the e.u. Perhaps when Britain's left the European Union next January well they'll go back to voting the way they normally did and perhaps people who voted for Mr Johnson because they don't like Mr Corben Well maybe when the Labor Party gets another little return and in other words you know up until very recently politics in this country is works largely along sort of class and wealth lies you know I mean the the more posh You are the more money you have evo conservative the last you know the more you're at the other end of the spectrum you vote Labor but of course this whole issue about Bracks that's very much to do with cultural identity and that's really scrambled things let's talk about cultural identity cannot talk about Dennis Skinner an extraordinary figure worth describing for our listeners who might not know him a sort of ironical sarcastic far left Labor m.p. Class war a class war explosively absolutely ex minor represents a mining constituency a mining constituency that voted leave he is euro skeptic a conservative has defeated him he's been there since 1970 bearing in mind and Lavery was saying what a bit more socialism and they'll come around to our way of thinking not him but also over Gnome and that as an example of what you would call this I guess it is more the politics of cultural identity people who are broadly unhappy with the way in which they see the country changed all around them that it's not as white as. It was not hers it was just not the way it was when when when they were younger economy and have jobs in the same way that kind of thing here you know whether but but whether that is a permanent realignment whether we're moving permanently to a sort of politics where it's all done on on your values how you see the world how comfortable you are with globalization with membership of multilateral multinational organizations like the I mean I simply don't know I don't think anybody does but also it's a big problem for Boris Johnson big problem nice problem to have he would say he's now got a Tory m.p. Representing what is basically a Labor seat what we've mentally always thought of as a Labor seat does that mean that he has to do read the Tory policies or can he be a free market saturation type I think it means he's got some really difficult choices and he's going to come some real pressures because you know there will be some people some of his labor leave voters working class voters who are kind of what you might be called culturally leave but they quite like the idea of an activist more socialist states and there are other people who've been voting conservative who actually don't want the date to spend lots of money and are very comfortable with things like immigration what you've just described is a coalition that didn't work for labor a coalition that has worked for the Tories and now they have to well see if it unravels I mean I think the big thing now of course look Mr Johnson is the winner of the nights but he's not been is not going to have things easy I mean the Bracks as a monthly difficult and as Ian Lavery was saying this has been a bit of an ugly baby consequence to me Johnson on the conservatives you know why or not because everybody is in love with them but because they kind of dislike them they were somewhat less unpopular than the people who lost have never been to an ugly baby contest in America as a man that now no I know what one looks like thank you very not an ugly baby thank you Rob Watson Blimey this is news day we need to get that trend I love how my mom onto you may. Take out the baby contest it could be a social trend let's talk about social trends and social media now with the World Service is digital as a noble you've been here all night how is this election go. Going down out that in the wide world well it's been a strange night seeing things trend worldwide which you would not normally see so small parts of the northeast of England towns and areas like Blythe Valley were number 3 in world trends at one point we had breaks it trending pretty much all night game a Games award came along and saved Twitter from from politics at about 4 am so it's been a strange one and in terms of now international coverage digitally coming through on the the newspaper sites on face but we're beginning to see some takes from from say Germany and sites online is probably lost in translation a touch but let's quite quite a funny sentences so just so pop up on Facebook Boris Johnson has won finally the drag around Breck's it has ended interesting little take there another topic that trying to briefly but I'm afraid has swum away from us is the thought of Ruth Davidson plunging into lock loam and skinny dipping she promised to do that if the s.n.p. Got to 50 seats they have nots so she'll be breathing a sigh of relief now that she doesn't have to do that babies ugly ones and pretty ones featured really Stella Creasy is baby born so the labor m.p. For Walthamstow in London a baby born just 2 weeks ago appeared on stage at that counts not also got lots of traction overnight she just she brought the baby on on stage in the in a sling so yeah dogs at polling stations is always massive in the u.k. Maybe you could explain this one priority to national audience dogs at polling stations is a real tradition now I think we've had so many elections back to back we've taken to it so it's basically the only thing you can talk about other than the weather and the turnout is is people tying their dogs up outside polling stations we actually had horses and I think a ferret this year to add to the pack but yeah they come thick and fast and Boris Johnson of course has his little is a terrier a little terrier called Dillon. Right who came along so that count so yeah it's been it's been an animal filled in. I and we've got now of course the tweeter in chief. Trump again for the 2nd time was congratulated Boris Johnson and said the u.s. And Britain will now be free to strike a massive new trade deal after Bret's it lots of capital letters and exclamation marks only when it's the Donald thank you for joining us and double our World Service digital editor 13 minutes to the hour this is new state Lawrence unclear and Rob Watson looking and sort of chewing over the top story Boris Johnson's Conservative Party has won a resoundingly victory in Britain's general election dealing a severe blow to the Labor Opposition Matthew Kenyon has some sport matters. While I can't believe the Bersih mentioned trending overnight because they are the 2 highest profile teams to fail to make it through to the knockout stages of the Europa League after last night's final group games but if Germany and Italy fail to get all their teams through all of those from Spain and England did make it a morale boosting win for Manchester United for nail against our side and a morale boosting comeback for Arsenal drawing to all that standard after playing to nail down to the delight of their stand in Boss Freddie Ljungberg really proud of them that's why I set off to do a game like. Top. Down like he said tremendous fans in my opinion. Show that belief in how they can play football and quality and that shows good for us in the future and of course they need experiences and need to play. Fight and belief amazing to see from the side and maybe I should mention that in the energy as well they do it with they go and they go and they don't stop all the details of all the Europa League action on the b.b.c. Sport website we told you yesterday that South Africa would not be bidding to host the Women's World Cup in 2023 while today is the day for those left in the race to make their detailed submissions to free fair and australia and new seal. And are putting in a joint bid to host the global games women's showpiece and that is a 1st according to the acting head of Australia's Football Federation Mark Falvey this is the 1st joints for a women's World Cup and the 1st Confederation beat of any current game and I think that along with the fact that a stranger in New Zealand can be trusted to deliver a women's World Cup There is not just the. Huge celebration of football because we certainly know how to sew and to enjoy our major events. But we think that we would be able to leverage this event to achieve a more substantial beings in the development of women's game a new dance man of women in society more generally a couple of other lines for you marijuana is to be taken off Major League Baseball's banned substances list. Players found to have taken marijuana will be treated in the same way as those suffering alcohol related issues and it won't surprise you that the surfing competition at the Paris Olympics in 2024 is going to be some way from the French capital Paris is after all quite a long way from the city but they're not going to Brittany or be a rich instead organizers are hoping to take a little bit of the games all the way to attack in French Polynesia in the Pacific Ocean the move still does have to be approved by the i.o.c. Sport today is at 1930 g.m.t. Here on the b.b.c. . That you can use Thank you. It's nice over the b.b.c. World Service it's Lawrence Pollard and Clare McDonnell with you thank you feel company we're a flexing on the general election here in the u.k. That the Conservative Party the ruling Conservative Party have won with a big majority you know the headline being that they have swept aside labor the opposition Labor Party in the Labor Party is traditional heartlands in the north of England just a handful of seats left as a player at the b.b.c. Forecasts the Tory majority of $78.00 seats Why is this import. And well it's important for many reasons not least of all for exit because the u.k. Has been a well you could say a state of stasis really since the elect the referendum in 2016 and now Boris Johnson says the leader of the conservative party we can get Brecht's it done we can move on with taking the u.k. Out of the you and to trade deals across the world before we came on air I got the reaction of former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis a man of the left of course who took on the e.u. In Basin to go she ations over what looked like it might be Greg since they were calling it back then so what does he make of the devastating setback of the Labor Party it is not the labor or even young. German call being that I listened. Where critical of the Labor Party many know I believe the left wing governments or Germany cauldron played against a believable part it was only because we've seen the Labor Party let's remember the extreme center the extreme center seems to me to be happier with. The National Journal recording the walking truth and I'm excited that lets Mr Coleman off the hook entirely and when you look across the board even at this stage the Labor vote is down in both believe and remain constituencies to have a situation where you know the main opposition is getting fewer than 200 seats can only be seen as a categorical rejection of their policies I disagree with you I do believe that we should all be self-critical and if you want to. Be national I believe we should just project. Hope for the next decade. And I believe that since creation had a lot to do with the outcome in the 1st past the post system when Mr Bruce Johnson your success really unites leave votes whereas the name vote is so pretty right I do criticize. I mean he failed to take sensible nuanced moderate positions and invest wish vision of hope and you think he didn't do that because essentially he's a year a skeptic and always has been was that the problem at the heart of this all along that he isn't convinced by the European project that any end of the day the electorate smelt a rat No I don't believe so because I complained against Rick's which I mean with John McDonald in 2016 show and remember the question generalists are put to us back then how interesting Assoc are you for Europe remember Jeremy saying. He says I'm like 6 I would have said to August at last me as a pickle and it looks it is I mean how enthusiastic am I about it it's state I would say to you 2 out of time that doesn't mean I want to get out to Greece or it's all that you're excited we should invest our criticism of the European Union while being on the the main site because we have a European Union with an inspiration. On what Europe should be like independently of the states in the Customs Union come some like Norway or stays with and a lot of people are saying in the u.k. That this should be the end of core business and it's a version of socialism a version of left leaning politics that the u.k. Has roundly rejected he's already said he's not going to lead the party into another election what should the Labor Party to now there's no doubt the extreme center looks upon directory reports Johnson as a major success for them because Corbin has always been in their targets the Liberal Party's policy the personalised is exceptionally sound and sensible in the green Eugene we need to worry balance labor and capital crush and wages we need to reduce think corporatism financed the exceptional power of the city of London and its capacity to operate like a black hole in the British economy people are people so a message with out why are they voting. For it they have categorically rejected it because they didn't vote for the. Clarity they got. Less. When they were you know as well as 30 Mainers managed to multiply their positions and that's why Johnson is in and I mean straight forward Greek finance minister Younis a very focused saying his opinion that was a vote for the 2nd time about Brecht said nothing to do with the Labor Party huge conservative majority that's our story bad news for many only labor but also conservatives who campaigned against conservative breaks it policy Gina Miller was one of those independent she paid for legal action and was part of a campaign to try to prevent the government policy as it was then a short while ago I asked her reaction to the vote it's a very surprising result because we've got parts of the country where for 50 years or more they've been mining cities or towns the heartland of the Labor Party has disappeared and it now throws open the question of Where does the Labor Party represent where does it represent who does it represent because it's been completely hollowed out and one of the things they have to start thinking about is leadership because what we've I think partly we've come to where we are because there has been a lack of leadership in the Labor Party and you don't have a functioning democracy if you don't have a functioning opposition I think Boris Johnson Most people will agree has won because there was a very simple message it was a message that was based on bricks it get bricks it done and if you want to breaks it down you voted for him the problem for the opposition was that there was no such alliance was there so there was tactical voting on one side and not on the other it's an absolute tragedy that the Lib Dems and Labor party didn't work together because they're quite a few seats in which they split the vote and neither one won and they let the conservative candidate through the middle if you like there were a number of seats 18. 6 to 25 seats where I think that has happened it's not accounting for the huge swing to conservatives from Labor but it has split the vote in areas where there is a high remain populous but they haven't got an m.p. Return to represent does not mean that you wouldn't accept that this is in effect a 2nd referendum that this is Britain once again voting to leave saying please listen to us and please do it this time I think there's 2 things One is the simplicity of the message and the referendum has been repeated again so take back control this time it's get backs it done another 3 another a very active again they've been very effective you know I had my background in marketing they've been marketed to get brakes it done and now Boris Johnson has a really serious problem facing him I think because not only does he have to represent the north and the south of England the labor heartlands as well as the conservative south more traditional conservative south young and old but also leaving remains and he's going to have to find a back seat that actually delivers those 3 words one thing we're talking about the simplicity and what punches through your campaign which was doggedly fought is it over now from a legal point of view the bill I believe will go through before Christmas so the brakes it Bill will be done it will then be the future relationship and I can't see that many legal loopholes but I can seeing from the campaigning side is pushing for a softer type of Brecht's it to say something that's more aligned to Single Market customs union and so that's a battleground now I think. One of the campaigners against breaks it sorely disappointed this morning this is news to Lawrence and Claire Robertson is still here if we look at the numbers and we count them up just give us an idea of vote share spoke about we spoke about seats but we have this funny system in the u.k. Don't we 1st past the post we see this is what counts but the vote is interesting because it kind of gives you a sense where the country is the conservatives like I mean 45 percent of the vote was. If you add up all the others so labor Scottish National Party liberal Democrats Greens who are all that they got more that's more interest so if we were to treat it as a 2nd referendum it actually breaks it didn't win it and that's why the point is an interesting one I mean historians will wonder why didn't the parties that were actually all come together. Because it was about other stuff as we heard earlier in the program from the chair of the Labor Party Rob Watson Many thanks indeed this is News Day Stay with us lots more momentous news. News of the region the nation and the world 2 2. Welcome in its news day live from London on the b.b.c. World Service thank you for joining us Clement Onil and Lawrence Paula. The people I've spoken and they want breaks it and Boris Johnson the Conservative Party has scored a major victory in the u.k. General election the 1st sign of the scale of victory came when they started taking seats in the north of England from labor and letting the concept of party candidate 17 carries. It has been a disastrous night for the leader of the label opposition Jeremy Colvin and he will be standing down this is obviously a very disappointing night for the Labor Party I want to also make it clear that I will not lead the party in any future general election campaign. In Scotland it's another fascinating different story the Scottish National Party the ones independents pretty much swept the board and they calling calling for another referendum. B.b.c. News Hello I'm Gareth the governing conservatives in Britain have been confirmed as the winners of the general election by a comfortable majority with all but a handful of seats now declared Boris Johnson's party is heading for a parliamentary majority of more than 70 the opposition Labor Party has lost sways of its to dish no heartland and has suffered its worst performance since before the 2nd World War Norman Smith reports the scale of Boris Johnson's triumph is far greater than almost anyone had expected senior tourist say he will now press ahead at speed with his Bracks it deal with a key Commons vote expected to before Christmas this was the reaction of the prime minister story election gives us no the chance to respect the democratic will of the British people to change this country for the better and to unleash the potential of the entire people of this country for labor the result is a catastrophe many defeated Labor M.P.'s have blamed it on Jeremy Corbyn and the fact that he wasn't regarded as a potential prime minister the opposition leader himself has made it clear he's not standing down straightaway to spite what he called a very disappointing night I will not lead the party in any future general election campaign I will discuss with our party. To ensure there is a process now of reflection on this result and on the policies that the party will take going forward and I will lead the party during that period to ensure that discussion takes place and we move on into the future. President Trump has tweeted his congratulations to Boris Johnson on his victory he said Britain and the United States would now be free to strike what he called a message from.
