We know intuitively that words are power words are magic words are healing. People always tell me that you know in the tents in the tragically in battle situations that they don't know which words to say. I've never had that problem I always know exactly what to say. About 30 seconds after I've already said The stupid thing that actually can kind of my mouth if one can. Like a reverse superpower. Plan and I can practice but somehow someway. I'm still going to say something wrong. The problem was it. Made people who don't know what to say. The Washington please understand I didn't mean. A minute. Because you're listening to. It with one man. And his quest to keep a loved one close to his heart forever. Anyway I get on the sage and the life is. Full of the never so surprise I don't deal with a lot of my parents. My dad was a talker and that was maybe the best thing you could do with him is hang out and chat words just always came very easily to him and he didn't you need to stop and think so much he would just lay it out and my dad had this sort of funny vocabulary you know he might insult somebody by calling them a poltroon you know if the weather was warm he'd say it's hotter than a $4.00 fart of course you think yourself what you support part but some context it worked like a lot of guys James grew to love his dad's ridiculous jokes but in April 2016 his cheesy one liners suddenly meant more because that's when he got the diagnosis stage 4 lung cancer and I remember having the feeling of he's dying it's going to happen in a matter of months rather than in a matter of years and we wanted to know his story want to remember it so now is the time we're going to record it we're going to get as much detail as we can because this is the window it's closing. We had a range the 1st session to be in the bedroom of my parents' house he sat in sort of the comfy armchair I sat in a wooden desk chair and I've got my digital recorder I've got a pad and my job was really just to sit and listen no I enjoyed high school. The senior year. Of the cattiness. For cannibal cannibal just. 53 fourths of the rah rah rah drivel. That's you question because. When I took all those recordings I sent them out to be professionally transcribed I was somewhat shocked to see that they came to a total of nearly $90000.00 words. That's around $300.00 or $400.00 pages about as many words as To Kill a Mockingbird. I printed out the transcription and put them in a binder we got that and then I put it on a shelf and there it stayed collecting dust on the shelf day after day in full view one day he was working on an article about hello Barbie doll that could talk it was supposed to be the next big thing in interactive talking computers. And so I shadowed their engineers for several months so I had this whole experience of seeing how you make a talking that was going to be this little brain her Barbie So anyway that was all kind of in the back of my mind why couldn't I make a dad bought. Something that would tell his life story in an interactive conversational way. Rather than just being hundreds of pages in a binder. To have him not be interactive seemed weird like it could have a lot of his jokes it could have him singing songs he seems suited to that James wanted to make a dad bought a sort of chat bot app of his dad dad but wouldn't speak the same way talking Barbie did but you could write to it like he wouldn't Facebook Messenger and I would write back in his dad's own words with his style and phrasing just like his dad would the 1st thing the dad bought says or one of the 1st things he can say to you when you fire him up he says to the beloved a noble father and that was a signature saying of my dad he would even call him selfe b.n.f. For short for beloved a noble father. I would have the binder with all my dad's words and I'm just looking through there and pulling out sentences and phrases and building conversations out of them. Getting dad bought to say catchphrases one thing but dad but had to be conversational I'm not going to have him deliver monologues in this chat but it's got to be some back and forth through the air you do it's. Not there for. Crap. It was fun it was it was fun to dig my teeth into his humor in particular with all of his it's funny sayings and I do this right it's going to sound like him. I spent a couple months on the 1st draft that Dad bought I tested it on myself in the morning and then that afternoon was so excited that I had somebody else test it a computer science expert student at Cal Berkeley outside a coffee shop on Shattuck Avenue in downtown Berkeley we were sitting outside at a little round table and we've been talking all about this quest to teach computers to talk when I sort of like hell as it happens I've been working on a little conversational Ai myself and I pulled out my phone would you would you like to try this. And I handed it to him the dad but you know did when that is standard opening lines he said to load his eye the beloved and noble father and the student logically said Hello father. And then the response that the dad bought gave was John and the student like you kind of did that face where you pull your chin back and you make a weird half smile. And it absolutely fell on its face like just just from jump it was much less ready than I thought it was going to be. I was have this weird mix of pride and protectiveness that the body had already started to become. A someone to me which is a little strange immediately after I was driving home I felt this feeling before and it was a Parenthood feeling. You know wanting my child to do well and feeling sort of. Both a little embarrassed for him that he didn't do well and also mad at the world for not being. More gentle with my precious child. It was just complicated my actual dad was dying and I could tell I was just rabbit holing on this project that it just wasn't clear that it was going to work it wasn't clear that anybody wanted it it certainly had no like broader commercial application the world didn't want it so when it was day after day working on it yeah they big question of why I started ringing in my head quite a bit my wife had raised a lot of good. Questions it's kind of weird isn't it like you're creating this sort of fake digital version of your dad and what's that going to be like for you what's that going to be like for the family you're already dealing with the fact that your dad who lives 5 minutes away from you is dying of cancer so it might be nice when you're not dealing with that situation to escape now there's no emotional escape for you I went through a long period where I was trying to decide whether I should even do that Dad bought at all I had some reservations is it going to be creepy will it work. James lock himself away in his office for 8 hours a day coding and recoating around Thanksgiving after months of programming I went up to their house got things set up with so I had the laptop computer set up at the dining room table this was going to be the 1st time that my mom and dad saw it. James opened on Facebook Messenger and then he went to the living room to get his dad he pushed his wheelchair into the dining room and then I stood him up in the chair next to his mom and there was so much going on with his health and everything that it felt also hard he wasn't so concerned with Dad bites technical performance he was worried about his parents emotional reactions I was hoping I think even more than whether like failed or not or had dead ends or bugs or anything and you know the moment where they would either like it in some way or maybe say whoa creepy like what is this you know you chat with that dad bought on Facebook messengers who are sending text messages back and forth but he has audio clips that play as well and I remember my mom 1st turned to me and she said I can say anything she turned and she typed this is Martha your dear wife. And the dad bought responded My darling wife. And she choked up immediately when the bot said that to her. His mom was completely absorbed with Dad 'd but out of the corner of his eye he could see his dad was confused who is saying what who is dad and whose dad died he got upset. He had a little bit of like an identity disturbance he's had some loss of function and. Some like remain telling him like having this version of him saying his words and he's having a hard time keeping track of who he is. That was unsettling for me it didn't make me worry a little bit. But really a lot of it was uplifting they both said amazing they're like Oh Ok we like it that passed that test at least I mean that was one of the 1st times that I start to feel a little more secure in like. Ok I think I think this is a good thing that that I've done 2 months later they called in hospice I went and sat by my dad's bedside and it was is very hard I mean he he was such a verbal person but he he really had just about entirely lost the ability to speak so that was crushing because that was always so much part of him it was so devastating to not hear him talk at the very end of his life and you know I sad I held his hand and I stroked his shoulder and I just kind of blabbed a bit because I felt like somebody should be talking and. You know it's just exhausted it's really exhausted. I went upstairs went into my sister's old bedroom which was the bedroom directly about the room where my dad was myself ready for bed took the phone out of my jeans and put it on the carpet beside the bed and I'm not normally I'd take the phone to bed sort of person but it was it was there. And I picked it up I decided to chat with the dad bought. A file comes up and it's one of the times when I could hear his actual voice and he sang the ad. When I climbed the steps. And I made the hair stand up on the back of my neck because it was one of those moments where I think I kind of cracked a smile and started crying at the same time. And then I went to bed that night and that's 6 in the morning and I just heard kind of a steady rap rap rap on the door got a bad opened the door and the nurse was there and he said You must come your father has just passed so went down the stairs went into the room I was all alone you know he was just lying there I touched him right away and he was he was quite warm and I remember wanting to. Keep touching him but he was so still Yeah so I sat there with him. Hello are you there. Hello John James Esquire here what's your name this is your son. I thought I smelled something funny well how the hell are you people have asked and with this dad bought are you just prolonging the grieving process and you're not going to accept your father's death and decide that's a problematic question for me like. If if if if the big reading a sort of like Don't think about your dad so much and don't have all these details of his life in your mind why would I want to do that. I am feeling stressed out today. I hope that whatever is worrying you will resolve itself soon shall we begin I'm going to keep making the dad bought better and better just so wonderful to hear my dad's voice to hear him saying to hear him talk let's do this. How did you meet Mom question mark. Sure 'd. If you have. The. Day. Welcome back to snap judgment the tongue tied episode now when Greg Stone was younger he was always a good boyfriend or at least he tried to be now please be advised the names in this story have been changed for reasons that will soon become apparent. So I just started dating Wendy and she was super cool we met on a bus tour a class trip and this girl walks on she had like a punk rock t. Shirt on she sat down and really just are smiling we clicked like insanely quick. Yeah I mean we had this amazing relationship and you know at 1st it was great like we you know we had this. Little 1st was a little issue about religion she was born again Christian and I was exhausted and I don't have any issues with religion. But her friends for some reason her friends hated me for it and then 11 happened and it was a rough day because where I'm from a New Jersey was just 20 minutes outside of the city we all had friends or family the reader there or related to someone directly there. And I knew her dad worked in the World Trade Center so a member just calling her and. Her dad was all right because he didn't go in that day. So later that night I went to my girlfriend's house for dinner and you know it was pretty intense I mean we were all pretty raw. You know everyone's solemn but also I you know we were happy that her dad wasn't there. I just remember her dad standing at the table and I was sitting there and him looking at our own I'm just going let's hold hands and thank Jesus. And her father says I was supposed to be there Jesus kept me out of the building and everyone was happy to be like oh yeah he did and I I went why would Jesus keep you out of the building why I just you and then he said well because we're good Christians good Christians and he got us out there good questions. And I was like so you don't think anybody else in there was either a good Christian or deserved being saved that he just let all these other people die but because you prayed a bunch of times he saved you. All my questions all the pain everything from that day all just starts firing at this poor guy. I wasn't trying to yell at him but I literally because he's making 911 about him. And I'm pretty much yelling at him I mean no one is blinking their mouths are open this is the boyfriend who's been in the stream Lee shy and courteous and sweet to them and never said a word like I was the quiet sweet guy was a Colobus there how are you oh I love you has a room doing a lot of really a very sweet wanted to impress make everyone like me and then we had this moment now I'm screaming into fairly. And I'm like oh my god what did I she runs away and I followed after her. And she was laying face down into a pillow just devastated and she would get your head up from the pillow and you know her makeup is running in sheer faces red. She looked at me and she just said All my friends told me that the devil was going to test me. Now you're making me question this this is the test they've been telling me about and I was like What are you saying I'm the devil and she was like not the devil. You're a test for the devil. And she just shut down she shut down in her just going. You know you got to go you got to go home. And then that was it it was over. The break up for me was it was rough and then I start to look at myself like Am I the devil I might be the Devil How do I know I'm not the devil I mean with the devil no he's the devil. I start to have a really bad taste my mouth for religion so I just threw it all away I went from make Gnostic to atheist to be about a year to really kind of get myself together. I'm just starting to really kind of date and I met a girl in class and we were going to go hang out we get into my car and we just start making out. And. I just got to stop her in the middle thinking this is like a fun like a fun joke. And. I go yeah you're not like Born Again Christian are you and she stops. Just tears come into her eyes and she goes oh my god it's always an issue. Like no no you know if it's not an issue I have no problem clearly it's not I mean clearly I have a thing for born again Christians it's really it's not you're beautiful you're great I've never met any other born again Christians in my life I don't think I would meet I want to get if you wasn't morning person you were going to of course I'm not I'm a good guy why you think I'm the devil and we would all laughed so a couple months later I mean Laura at a bar we were at a Houlihan's in New Jersey she worked at the hula hands and I worked at t.g.i. Friday's which was across the street. She was a really attractive way out of my league but for some reason she was like I made her laugh just to make your laugh and you know I just I was on point and this girl will make it out in the foyer of the my hands it's for fun and now we make back to my car never make out my car and she's like hot and heavy and she stops me get out she looks and she goes this is put it all out there what makes you crazy what is let's get into know it now so we just accept it and I was like Yeah well sometimes say dumb things and I regret them immediately and she was like yeah but like come on. And I go get what about you man you seem perfect What about you what's your craziness you know in my head I'm just going to not say born again Christian to not say born again Christian so I just grabbed anything and I went oh no you're not like anything are you she stops she pauses she looks at me and she goes only my grandmother knows. And she and she starts crying and I go oh my god not again. And I just I'm like Hey listen I didn't mean it like there's nothing I literally just said anything. And she was like Please don't tell anybody. Ever called me again. So about a year later I'm dating this other girl we did I really haven't you know had a good time and laugh and I'm telling my exes you know we're having a conversation in a bar and I'm just telling her this story this is a great story it's a great story about how I consciously put my foot in my mouth and I'm with my foot in my mouth and I called some girl Christian and she was and she hated it they had that girl she was bullying make and she was like wait what and I was like get this girl from who hands you know. And she was like wait. I know Laura. And I was like what and she was like oh my God I kind of thought that but and as she's literally saying I kind of thought that but the door opens Laura walks into the bar. I haven't seen her in a year and she looked me right in the eyes sees Sara sees us our faces our ghost white makes of beeline right for us. I just go Harry. And she goes You didn't tell her did you and I was like why and make the girl was dating was like I don't know it's Ok we're cool. Like she just put her finger to my facial like your. I told you that in confidence. And then she just stormed off. It was too perfect it was like it being an atheist I'm just saying to myself Man if anything is going to make me believe in God This is it. Ok so a few years back I booked a series regular on his t.v. Show it was called click and it was my 1st t.v. Credit ever. Be let me ask you something we you and that meter maid are making love I. Which one of you does that drive it and which one you does the part. I was like This Is It is my big break I'm going to be the next Kerry Washington I was bawling and so once the show wrapped up I booked a fancy vacation to get away from it you know get away from the band's side no. I did not have anything right before the vacation I dislocated my knee it's no big field happens all the time but I ended up on crutches. So I go on this vacation I just want to maintain a low profile at the time and it was really great and I was on my way back. So I get on the plane 2 rows of seats and then one aisle and nobody looks happy everybody looks like a grumpy version of Michael Fassbender and as soon as but hits that seat I know I gotta go to the bathroom when those people the small bladder just. I'm sitting there and waiting for us to get to cruising altitude so that the pilot turns off the seat belts on. 20 mins came. And then 25 minutes and it's just not happening we're just circling in the cloud layer was circling and then finally finally. I. Do and I say Ok this is my moment and I go and I am buckle my seat belt but by the time I finally managed to fumble it open somebody's head in me and I stood up and the flight attendant is like Ma'am you know I have to stand up ma'am you have to sit down and wait. I'm not I'm not trying to cause any trouble today so I sat down . Because of this knee injury I just kept getting to the bathroom I mean I would be on the edge of my seat just waiting for that door to crack open and as I saw a life in the bathroom I'd be you know from let me try to get my crutches and by the time I mashed that bam somebody else would be in the bathroom and I just kept getting beat just over and over again stand up unbuckled driver crashes got stand up on buckle grab a crutches got. Finally finally I looked around I realized the bathroom was clear. Grabbed my crutches and I started making my way down the aisle so I can get a little bit of relief and as soon as I'm halfway to my destination of the bathroom . Ladies and gentlemen we started out so go ahead and put your feet and your drink it will them. To go to the bathroom I'm not going to make it. And this time she would have to tell me to sit down she just gave me that look that you got to get in trouble and so I asked them about right back down that seat and I said hey listen I just got to go to the back real quick can you let me go off and try to go off light and I. Kind of like took my crutches and I kind of you know kind of. She was like No I was so stunned and I said you know what it only takes 20 minutes to decide and you can make it. So we start descending and once again bridge is not descending it's you know 15 minutes go pass 20 minutes go past I mean I have been holding it for a long time so I just said I'm going to have to go to the bathroom so I stood up and the flight attendant said Ma'am I told you once you have to sit down. This flight attendant just looked like she was just mean mugging me from the jump you know so I sat down and I still one more time and I said I'm sorry I really have to go and that's when people kind of started to notice that I wasn't paying attention to what she said. I could see somebody like pull out their phone records me. I could not have this I could not get in trouble right now so all these people. I am a series regular on the 3rd highest rated show on t.v. As you know and I think from yesterday Well I'm actually a nice person. Do you agree with me or disagree and. This is right at the top of my career I was just about to break it big and become a household name I really could not have afford to have my face splashed all over the front page a World Star Hip Hop. Songs in there and I'm like about to explode and I was just like Ok just run yourself through the worst case scenario Ok. Stand up with a lady says I take this question a smack upside the head so that I get to the bathroom but probably before I make it that far air marshal tackled and have me on the ground had both money. Ok how about this what if I stand up and I just stand in the middle of the aisle and I say like this is for free. And I pee right then and there you know stick to the man . But. Then I thought about there was one more option which is I have had to pee in small places before my dad used to take me fishing all the time and I would pee in the back of the van in an old up cap and I was thinking to myself. Deanna there is one of 2 ways you can pee because you gonna pee you can either be standing up while an air marshal handcuffs you or you can pull out your contigo travel mug and you can pee directly into that cup with as much dignity as peeing in public will allow you . So I said to my girlfriend I said and he hit me my travel mug and she did and she started to ask me a question she started to say what's cool and I just shook my head and I put my one finger to my lips and. I took my sweater and I slipped over my lap and I was wearing like kind of baggy like. Pants and I stuck the cab this far close to my by I really want to pull down my pants but I was like Ok somebody got noticed. And I. Could So as much of it as possible went to the cup. It felt so good I felt like I had just said 15 pounds. And as soon as I was done peeing and I felt that burning shame but also that sweet release I took the sweater and I lifted my butt up and I shoved the sweater underneath me and I screw the top on the travel much hung my head in shame. I was in row like 12 or something and I turned and waved back right back and rolled 13 see there was this old lady like tight tight curls on her head was giving me. Like she was looking. At a fish. I did you know use the Squire to protect the sea and I use a hand sanitizer because it was a legacy as a next to clean up before I left the plane. So once we. Plane I was really embarrassed I was just trying to be discreet I don't want anybody to notice me bands were still wet because I didn't have any spare pants on my carry to bring spare pants on their carry on so I took my sweater tied around my waist. I was sure that I smelled like pee I in fact I was absolutely positive that I was going to slip. In front of everybody. And as I am going airport I was on one of those. All of it happened. Turns around. And he says. Thank you Charmaine. She's on t.v. Omfg. No one had ever read me before and. The crowds parted like what you hear about in movies everybody. Took a selfie of me as he was walking alongside as. I was just being paraded through this line of people started snapping pictures I was so shocked I almost forgot about like half a 2nd. Story with. Well. Anything yet because Sean Flannery he needed a job and he decided to get one. Means. Stepped up. So I was interviewing it especially the electronic repair store in Akron Ohio it was called the battery and they had a whole Leary's logo it was a humanoid battery and it was like this and seen battery they made most their money in custom batteries and I knew the assistant manager and she recommended me so the job's kind of bad. I knew nothing about batteries and just line trouble job interview him because the job so much in the bag and he seems to be impressed with me he says show me the inventory at one point he pulls out this drawer of Oxy on Mark batteries and they all look like 9 told me and my brothers when we were growing up we would always live 9 volt batteries and it just feels like little droplets of rain are sort of dancing on your time. And asked me like how would you describe your level battery knowledge and I go ask her for a buck and then I pick one up and I ask him Have you ever done this and I just lick it. Turns out each and every one of these is like a 20 fold or higher garage door opener custom battery and it shocks me. I'm classful on it was sort of like at full speed you walk into a low ceiling and you're half in pain but also just half so confused by why you're on the ground all the sudden the store was in a mall kiosk. There was a customer wait out his watch battery who just ran away when I lived it is spelled out to figure out now he's imagined that he ran off just thinking he saw me die. From a distance it almost looked like I just he's in the world's hottest place of pizza with my tongue sticking out and I'm fanning air on to it it felt like almost a wasp speaking directly in the middle of my tongue and I finally sort of regained my composure and we locked eyes and that's when we both realized that I had been completely lying about all my battery knowledge. I got a call from the friend who recommended me the next day she was livid she said I told him you were the smartest person I know I looked like I know that moron. I've learned whenever something doesn't look mass produced that is normally mass produced Don't just stick it in your mouth you know but I think the most amazing thing about it is I got the job what if Yeah I got the job. Is he just paid he wasn't the owner manager you just were there and he just hated his job so much and everyone he was interviewing was incompetent so he figured he may kill himself here but it will at least be interesting. Towards the world. More about Shawn at the world's dumbest man dot com. Judgment. Produced by none other than Stephanie. There are 2 types of people. Should I say. People who are wrong. Don't get. Angry cat cars and. A glass. She has yet another story to prove the worth of man's best friend. So couple of months ago I found myself deep in the buy you of Louisiana where the house is on stilts and the gas stations have these big signs advertising fresh shrimp and I was there. I met Kirby for a K.-Mart name is Kirby of are out I met Kirby in his church because he's a Methodist preacher he's also a home a Indian and he comes from legit by you stuck people like his Grampa. Grandfather Mathilde Vera and he was very much of a hunted in the sense you couldn't get this cam back or you had to come there Bob there's a little bit cap I mean it might have been 10 feet by 12 feet you're known for living by himself or his $17.00 There were a lot of Yeah he loved dogs each of those dogs had a purpose in hot yet spotters retrievers living that far on the bio material wasn't going to the Piggly Wiggly to get eggs uses one of those men that love living off the land in the water and providing for themself and but don't fortunately the game warden always thought my deal was poaching deer. And technically material was doing that. But I don't know why you call it poaching if you're killing it for food but still it was considered illegal and so does game warden had made up his mind that he was on a cash might deal with it dear. Fortunately I had a secret weapon a dog named brown brown black and white Holland Browns main job was to listen for the game Morton and he had a skills of hearing when the game warden would launch his boat about a half mile down the Intracoastal the moment it would hit the water and the more it was started motor Brown would give a little a warning. To let him know that companies coming and so Grandpa would start heating up the water put on some coffee I had any pellets he might have let casual and by the time the game warden would pull up to my grandfather's dock Hall he was just in the and so the game warden would I'm a tail suspiciously but he wouldn't ever find any deer all things to brown the dog Brown became my grandfather's favorite companion my grandfather would go so for us as to even have a special pair of sunglasses he had for state trooper glasses big aviator glasses he had a white shirt he had on it a front 4 and put on him with a tie he even folded a brown paper bag and made a round hat for Brown. Grandfather material and dress an awful lot like Brown himself and he put on a hat just like the dog war but he didn't have 2 person glasses. So they couldn't dress alike you might say. So mention this big dog fully dressed in hat glasses certain time I sitting at the kitchen table for meals he would actually climb on a chair and yet a little white cup with a green ring around it and he knew a scud It was unbelievable to see how the dog would sit in it share I mean he was so honored I mean he just sat there so respectful. He had that posture that just make you feel like it is dog really he may not be a human being with Boy you sure are pretty close to. So one day Brown barks a warning. And sure enough the game warden floats up on his back but this time he decides hey I'm actually going to come in and have some of that coffee look around so he steps out of his bow and all of dogs are scatter except for Brown Brown will stand there like the guard walk with him all the other camp the game wardens say what's wrong with brown so don't worry about Brown he just has to weigh is. The game warden took a seat at the tiny kitchen table and looked on easily at Brown whose tie and paper bag hat were disconcerting to say the least. Right next to him staring them right in the face you know not taking his eye off the game or just kind of you know it makes you feel uncomfortable when a big dog like that is just staring at you and giving you want to. Rouse. Got all the coffee ready cause of cup in front of the game warden puts a cup in front of him so he reaches over and pours the coffee in the cup and bought a game or I'm sitting there just washing that dog when he morn pixel that cup the dog goes haywire. Mean the dog jumps up and start barking praising John Madden you know with our own voice game or just he's corner around had the warden pinned against the wall his teeth bared all from neck or in the warden screams in that deal might get what's wrong with Brown. And material says Oh is that you sitting in his chair drinking out of his cup grandpa material had given the warden Brown's cup and Brown didn't appreciate it game warden didn't know that the dog of coffee the dog knew his coffee and he knew a Scot and his game warden drinking out of it I mean it just got him very upset Well legend has it. The game warden didn't come back after that he didn't really know what all was happening out there with that but. He didn't care to find out. The true story. Really really Stephanie. Please no.
